For decades, viewers have been split on writer/director Meir Zarchi’s 1978 film I Spit on Your Grave (watch it Here). Some write it off as reprehensible trash. Some – including legendary drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs – think it’s a worthwhile revenge thriller. The film has developed a cult following, and now the folks at Printed in Blood, a publisher of art books, have announced that they’ll be celebrating the 45th anniversary of I Spit on Your Grave by releasing a collector’s edition I Spit on Your Grave Scriptbook!
Also known as Day of the Woman, I Spit on Your Grave stars Camille Keaton as a young woman who is brutally attacked and left for dead by a group of men. She then sets out to exact revenge on her attackers. Zarchi has said he was inspired to make the movie after helping a woman who had...

For the first official week of horror and sci-fi home media releases in the month of April, we don’t have a ton of titles coming out, but the ones that are being released on April 5th are a pretty damn good bunch of movies all the same. Probably the biggest movie arriving on multiple formats this Tuesday is Scream (2022) from the Radio Silence crew, so if you missed it in theaters, now is the perfect opportunity to be able to catch up with everything that happened in Woodsboro.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for April 5th include a 4K edition of I Spit on Your Grave (1978), The Long Night, Vicious Fun, The Ice Demon, a 2-Movie Scream collection, and 60 Seconds to Live!

Here is a film that’s charged by contemporary sentiments yet borrows heavily from the past, riffing on titles such as I Spit on Your Grave, Ms. 45 and Hard Candy. Like those films, Promising Young Woman is a rape revenge drama that’s far too improbable and genre-inflected to be taken seriously. This is more of a problem for director Emerald Fennell than it was for Meir Zarchi (I Spit), Abel Ferrara (Ms. 45) and David Slade (Hard Candy), because Fennell’s film has the greatest pretense of being an ‘issue’ drama.
Carey Mulligan stars as Cassie, an angsty barista who dropped out of medical school following the rape of her friend Nina, whose case was dismissed by the dean and the legal system. Stewing in her parents’ home at the age of 30, Cassie spends her evenings feigning drunkenness at local clubs, luring men to private places and excoriating them when...

I Spit On Your Grave, one of the most notorious films of the '70s exploitation boom, has just been re-released in a deluxe Box Set from indie distributor, RoninFlix, and it's a thing of shocking beauty. Initially released in 1978 to scathing reviews, I Spit On Your Grave is the brainchild of writer/director Meir Zarchi, an Israeli immigrant who had no intention of making an exploitation film, but nonetheless succeeded in creating a piece of history with his seminal rape-revenge masterpiece. A young writer, Jennifer Hills, leaves the hustle and bustle of the city to a secluded lakeside home to complete her first novel in solitude. Initially infatuated with her idyllic surroundings, Jennifer's dreamy isolation soon gives...

Chances are, if you’re familiar with grindhouse/exploitation films of the 1970s or the output of later auteurs these titles influenced, you’ve heard and likely experienced the 1978 provocation I Spit on Your Grave (aka Day of the Woman). Although it shares the English language title of Boris Vian’s earlier I Spit on Your Grave(s), a steamy pulp thriller published in 1946 about a Black man who can pass for white and decides to take vengeance for his brother’s lynching by seducing as many white women as he can in the sweltering heat of the racist American South, Meir Zarchi’s sensational debut became part of the zeitgeist, absorbing all the references—and mostly for the extremely negative press it received.…...

The son of the director of the notorious rape-revenge thriller attempts to open a discussion over a film that has both its detractors and admirers
The infamous 1978 exploitation-revenge flick I Spit on Your Grave – one-time “video nasty” and chosen by critic Roger Ebert as his all-time worst film – now gets a lengthy retrospective and reappraisal here courtesy of its director Meir Zarchi’s son, Terry. Perhaps the current febrile atmosphere – split between rampant online misogyny and strident #MeToo calls – is the right moment.
Zarchi Sr is nonplussed in being asked to justify the 30 minutes of gang rape; he describes his film, with its second-half procession of wince-making retribution slayings, as simply “biblical – an eye for an eye”. Whether Terry Zarchi is persistent, or sophisticated enough, in questioning that belief is another thing.

It’s not hard to underestimate how much of an impact the original I Spit on Your Grave film had on the genre – mainly thanks to the controversial way the film was marketed back in the late 70s/early 80s and its subsequent banning across several territories. Yet despite all the furore around the film, it never spawned a sequel – after all that was not de rigueur back then, especially with indie productions – but it did inspire the film Savage Vengeance, from cult director Donald Farmer: an unofficial sequel that starred actress Camille Keaton, under a pseudonym, playing yet another “Jennifer” without ever explicitly stating is was a follow-up to Zarchi’s original.

When the original 1978 film was banned in the UK upon release, notorious revenge movie I Spit on Your Grave helped launch the “video nasty” craze of the 1980’s and inspired a generation of genre directors through its provocative, no-holds-barred filmmaking. 32 years later, a bold and shocking remake reignited the franchise and spawned a series of sequels which pushed the envelope even further.
Available in the UK as a complete set for the first time, the I Spit on Your Grave: The Complete Collection contains the previously banned, X-rated original I Spit on Your Grave (though distributors Kaleidoscope haven’t mentioned if this release will be uncut or not), the infamous 2010 I Spit on Your Grave remake, powerful sequels I Spit on Your Grave 2, and I Spit on Your Grave: Vengeance is Mine, plus the final chapter in the franchise, new UK release I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu,...

It’s clear that writer/ director Joe Martin’s Us and Them could be interpreted as a manifestation of Brexit/ Trump diffidence and economic inequality, donned in the garb of a home invasion thriller. Sadly though, Martin mishandles the drama and analogies in this slipshod big screen cine-manifesto that’s neither edifying, terrifying or entertaining.
The surface story is straightforward: a wealthy family become the target of subjugated Brit delinquents who invade their home and use the attack to make a political statement, while robbing the place blind in the process. The script breaks this down into chapters while transcending time and just about hits its beats to evade brain raking tedium. The production/ execution is passé and inept, smacking more of Michael Winner on a bad day than the films it tries to emulate, but Us and Them’s politics are very contemporary.

Better late than never, right?
The iconic and hugely controversial horror film, I Spit On Your Grave, is getting an official sequel, which will act as a direct follow-up to the 1978 original. Titled I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu, it will completely ignore the 2010 remake and the two sequels that followed that. Instead, it’ll see actress Camille Keaton, who played writer Jennifer Hills in the classic flick, return to the role after four decades, along with director Meir Zarchi back at the helm.
As far as plot details are concerned, Jennifer has become a successful author and lives with her daughter Christy, who’s a model. It’s not long though before her past comes back to haunt them, as the relatives of the men Jennifer killed in I Spit On Your Grave set out for revenge and kidnap both women. Cue the deja vu.

There are horror movies that will give you nightmares, and cause you to fear showers and shallow waters for decades. There are some that get deep under your skin – often times because they've literally flayed or burrowed under their characters' skins – and others that will make you see everyday items (a bowl of pea soup, a hockey mask, a videotape) in a horrifying new light. And then there are the ones that push so many social-taboo envelopes, strike so many collective raw nerves and tweak so many communal gag reflexes that they are a cut,...

Severin Films make their return to the UK home video market with the Blu-ray release of two Jess Franco films in their library, She Killed in Ecstasy and Vampyros Lesbos – erotically charged Euro-horrors starring Franco fave Soledad Miranda which mark the pinnacle of Franco’s career. The former, a revenge thriller, is considered the best of the 200-odd films the Spanish auteur has made, whilst the latter is a crowd-pleasing slice of sleaze (who doesn’t love lesbian vampires) that is also an oddly-faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula.
She Killed In Ecstasy
Stars: Soledad Miranda, Fred Williams, Paul Muller, Howard Vernon, Ewa Strömberg, Horst Tappert | Written and Directed by Jess Franco
She Killed In Ecstasy tells the story of Mrs. Johnson (Miranda), the widow of a young doctor (Williams) who kills himself after a medical committee terminates his research into human embryos, considering it too inhumane.

Is it too late to spit again? Fans of the original 1978 cult classic I Spit On Your Grave (review) have been eagerly hoping for a bloody sequel for 37 years. Now their wishes have been answered, but has it been to long of a wait for this sequel?
I certainly don't think so, and I welcome it! Especially since Camille Keaton will reunite with director Meir Zarchi to reprise her role of Jennifer Hills in the direct sequel, I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu.
I'm personally stoked for this new chapter, and am especially looking forward to seeing the character Jennifer Hills again, joined by her daughter Christy Hills (Jamie Bernadette) as well as a variety of new characters, including actress Maria Olsen who plays the role of Johnny’s wife, the gas station attendant that Jennifer castrated.

It was two years ago, while reviewing I Spit On Your Grave 2, that I found myself questioning why the hell someone thought Meir Zarchi’s sexploitation classic I Spit On Your Grave (1978) would be the perfect jumping point for a torturous franchise based on dirty, genital-mutilating vengeance. Yet, despite my deepest fears, here we are discussing I Spit On Your Grave 3: Vengeance Is Mine, which is a much less powerful and far more disgusting take on a message that this year’s Felt handled with much more poise, artistry, and grace. Films often shy away of the lingering effects that rape victims deal with, but instead, R.D. Braunstein’s man-hating shocker turns constant fear into a ridiculous superpower meant to rid the world of evil rapists. You’re getting what you paid for here, but why you’d want to pay for it is completely beyond my comprehension.

Excessive, mindless and often weird violence is being carried out by testosterone fueled male hands. Or at least, that´s the stereotype usually assigned to Xy chromosome wielding part of mankind, while women are deemed the gentler sex in every aspect. Meir Zarchi's cult classic of the rape-revenge genre I Spit on Your Grave, reverses the notion but only after physical and psychological humiliation, and victimization of the main protagonist. Recently, Matsumoto Hitoshi brought an army of whip-cracking, teeth-kicking and spit-jetting dominatrixes in the head-twisting comedy R100. A self-taught filmmaker from Mexico, Artemio Narro, catches the theme from the other side in his feature debut I Stay With You (Me Quedo Contigo).Spaniard Natalia (Beatriz Arjona) flies to Mexico City to meet her boyfriend Esteban. Released in 1978, I Spit on Your Grave is of course one of the most talked about and controversial horror movies of all time, centering around the brutal rape of young writer Jennifer Hills, who exacts ample doses of bloody revenge on her attackers.

We caught up recently with I Spit on Your Grave reboot series director Steven R. Monroe to garner his thoughts on the polarized critical response to the CineTel Films/Anchor Bay Entertainment release of his feature I Spit On Your Grave 2, as well as on the future of the franchise, and more. Monroe, whose extensive directorial credits include the genre features House of 9 (2005), It Waits (2005), and the upcoming Cerina Vincent-vehicle MoniKa, as well as the 2010 Sarah Butler-starring remake of Meir Zarchi’s controversial 1978 rape/revenge feature I Spit On Your Grave, proved refreshing in his honesty in regards to what drew him to directing the sequel, as well as his understanding of the polarized response to it, and his exasperation with a faction of the blogosphere, among other things. Having premiered at London’s FILM4 FrightFest this past August with a subsequent release to Blu-ray, DVD...

The original I Spit On Your Grave (1978) can be described in a multitude of words, and while acknowledging the absolute abhorrent treatment of a female character coupled with her equally graphic revenge, Meir Zarchi’s relentless film became a cult classic because it empowered women in a way not even horror survival girls had before. It’s easy to comprehend the shock-value appeal, and that’s exactly what Steven R. Monroe tried to hit on with 2010′s remake, and in my opinion, struggled to do. It was no longer fresh, the shock was lost, and it felt a little more sadistic. I Spit On Your Grave 2, Monroe’s controversial sequel to his equally controversial remake, unfortunately feels like beating a dead corpse, um, I mean horse, as creating a franchise that brutalizes women and forces us to watch just doesn’t really get me all that excited. Hooray, more rape,...

Video Nasty is a term coined in the United Kingdom in 1982, describing films that were criticized by the press and religious groups for their violent content. The concern being that with titles available on home video, the films were accessible by anyone, with no age restrictions. The lack of a censorship system for home video titles led to The Video Recordings Act 1984. The Video Recordings Act required stricter censorship standards for titles released to home video than what was required for a film’s theatrical release.
With the introduction of home video in the UK, the governing standard of decency was the obscene publications act of 1959. Under that act, any title found to be indecent by the Director of Public Prosecutions could find the film’s producers, distributors and retailers subject to prosecution. The act also allowed for local police to seize content from video retailers if they felt that...
