Exclusive: Samuel Goldwyn Films has taken North American rights on Tarik Saleh’s Cairo Conspiracy, which formerly was known as Boy from Heaven. Sweden’s submission for the Best International Feature Oscar made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, where Saleh won the Best Screenplay prize. Samuel Goldwyn is planning an early-2023 release.
The political thriller stars Tawfeek Barhom as Adam, the son of a fisherman who is offered the ultimate privilege to study at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the epicenter of power of Sunni Islam. Shortly after his arrival in the Egyptian capital, the university’s highest-ranking religious leader dies suddenly, and Adam soon becomes a pawn in a ruthless struggle between Egypt’s religious and political elite. Dermot Mulroney will star as a detective in in the independent horror film “Trick,” directed by Patrick Lussier.
Ellen S. Wander of Film Bridge International will produce and handle worldwide sales for the film at the American Film Market, which launches Oct. 31 in Santa Monica, Calif. Gabriela Lugo will also serve as a producer. Film Bridge International also partnered Chimney’s Fredrik Zander to handle post-production. The movie will begin shooting in Los Angeles in December.
The story, written by Lussier and Todd Farmer, centers on an elusive serial killer named Trick, who descends upon a small town annually, bringing terror and death. Mulroney’s no-nonsense detective character has faced Trick once before –- and shot and killed him, or so everyone keeps telling him. Against everyone else’s judgement, he is convinced that Trick is not only alive and well, but the one responsible for a series of gruesome murders.

The Swedish Film Institute has backed nineteen projects in its latest round of funding.
Swedish director Sanna Lenken, who won Berlin’s Crystal Bear in 2015 with My Skinny Sister, is now making a 30-minute short Night Child (Nattbarn), based on a graphic novel by Hanna Gustafsson.
The story is about 14-year-old girl Iggy “who lives a parallel online life to avoid the everyday tedium. A story about identity, sexuality, borderlands and friendship.”
The film is one of several new productions getting backing from the Swedish Film Institute. Others include Dome Karukoski’s anticipated new Tom Of Finland biopic [pictured] and Agnieszka Holland’s Polish drama Game Count.
Other projects backed, listed from highest investments, are:

A group of producers and entertainment executives is heading to New York for a series of talks and one-on-one networking sessions over October 6-8.
Film i Väst, the Swedish regional film fund, sponsors the trip, which is organised by London and La-based consultants MediaXchange.
Mediaxchange CEO Katrina Wood (pictured), said the aim of the delegation – which she described as “very much the cream of the crop in Sweden” – was to foster close ties and build towards a reciprocal trip in February 2015 during the Gothenburg Film Festival.
“The goal is to build a bridge between the industry there and the Swedes in a more substantial way then has been done in the past, which was very much on a project-by-project basis,” said Wood.
“Delegates will be there for three days during the New York Film Festival to understand the issues of working in the Us market and to meet some of the experts there. The majority...
