The Toxic Avenger is a cult classic superhero black comedy film from 1984, written and directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. The film tells the story of Melvin, a nerdy janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste and becomes a grotesque mutant with superhuman strength and a sense of justice. The film spawned three sequels, a musical, a cartoon series, and a loyal fan base.
Now, Legendary Pictures is bringing The Toxic Avenger back to the big screen with a reboot that promises to be a “contemporary reimagining” of the original. The reboot is written and directed by Macon Blair, who is known for his indie films such as I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore and Blue Ruin. Whatever innocence is introduced in Mercedes Bryce Morgan's "Spoonful of Sugar" with the hummed tune of "Oh My Darling, Clementine" and glimpses of Christmas candy canes rots away like a forgotten fruit that rolls forever out of sight. Imagine "Mary Poppins" breakneck twisting into the darkness of "Orphan" or "Hard Candy." Leah Saint Marie's screenplay explores a drug-induced coming-of-age tale about a supposed hair-twirling babysitter's virgin's sexuality, but that's before Saint Marie balances out storytelling sweetness with an avalanche-pour of salty malevolence. "Spoonful of Sugar" is bone-chilling, knee-buckling nastiness that punishes every character with zero compassion — this ain't the twinkly-eyed fairy tale Morgan deceptively sells at the movie's onset.
Morgan Saylor stars as ponytailed and supposedly 21-year-old Millicent, who's just been hired by accomplished author Rebecca (Kat Foster) to babysit her allergy grab-bag of a son, Johnny (Danilo Crovetti). Millicent claims she's taking a summer hiatus from studies...

In Spoonful of Sugar, a disturbed babysitter experiences a sexual awakening while using LSD to alternatively treat a seemingly “sick” child from a family with dark secrets of their own.

One of the more entertaining films I saw back at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival was the punk rock rom-com Dinner in America. Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier, the film has now finally received U.S. distribution via the newly-launched company Best & Final Releasing. Ahead of a theatrical release on May 27 and on June 7, the new trailer and poster have now arrived.
The film follows an on-the-lam punk rocker (Kyle Gallner) and a young woman (Emily Skeggs) obsessed with his band who go on an unexpected and epic journey together through the decaying suburbs of the American Midwest. Also starring Griffin Gluck, Pat Healy, Mary Lynn Rajskub, David Yow, Hannah Marks, Nick Chinlund, and Lea Thompson, see the trailer below.
Dinner in America opens in select theaters on May 27 and arrives digitally on June 7.

The Butthole Surfers, one of the bands that influenced some of the biggest rock bands of the 90s including Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers, are getting their own deep dive.
A feature documentary about the band, which was lampooned on The Simpsons and Beavis and Butthead and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, is currently in the works from director Tom Stern.
Stern is a writer, director, producer and showrunner, whose credits include Netflix’s The Toys That Made Us and Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History.

Grunge stalwarts L7 unveiled a new cover of Joan Jett’s 1983 track “Fake Friends,” featuring guitar and vocals from none other than Jett herself.
For their rendition of “Fake Friends,” L7 flattened out the boogie-tinged skip of the original and streamlined it into a snarling ripper. “Losing friends, losing friends,” Donita Sparks sings, with Jett providing the harmonies, “You got nothing to lose/You don’t lose when you lose fake friends.”
“To have Joan’s vocals on this track along with mine is super surreal and cool,” Sparks said in a statement.

With nods to King Crimson, Talking Heads, Death Grips, and many others, London’s Black Midi creates a unique brand of cathartic punishment on their excellent debut. The band’s barely college age (they met at the same prestigious performing arts school that produced Adele and Amy Winehouse), but they’ve attained striking erudition, dexterity and compositional know-how for musicians so young — not to mention a lot of UK hype for a band this odd.

While several books have explored the fertile 1990s indie rock scene, precious few documentaries truly capture the period’s excitement. “Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero,” which premiered at SXSW and which will have its New York premiere Friday, offers a notable peek into the era via the lens of this arty Dayton, Ohio-based band that reached the top of the underground before tragedy touched the band due to a car accident which took the life of the act’s charismatic lead singer, Tim Taylor, just before the band were set to sign with a major label.
“Transmissions After Zero,” directed by Brooklyn-based filmmaker Eric Mahoney — and with funding help from fellow Ohioan Trent Reznor and actor Mark Hammill — chronicles Brainiac’s unlikely rise and subsequent fall with intelligence and humor. Why would Butthole Surfers want to make a coffee table book to recount their history? Frontman Gibby Haynes’ answer is typically bizarre: “We’re all history buffs. We drink coffee. We like tables. Personally, I’m a big fan of the Cherner oval dining table. And the book wasn’t our idea.”

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore
Plot (courtesy of Sundance):
U.S.A., 2016, 97 min., color
When a depressed woman is burglarized, she finds a new sense of purpose by tracking down the thieves, alongside her obnoxious neighbor. But they soon find themselves dangerously out of their depth against a pack of degenerate criminals.
Director/Screenwriter: Macon Blair
Principal Cast: Melanie Lynskey, Elijah Wood, David Yow, Jane Levy, Devon Graye
Review: It feels like director/writer Blair went to school when he was working with director/writer Jeremy Saulnier. This is a wonderful thing for the film title that you should say over and over again until you officially have it memorized, I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore. It is such...

“I just want people to not be assholes.”
It’s the theme of I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore, directed by Macon Blair, and something the film’s heroine Ruth (a pitch-perfect Melanie Lynskey) utters more than once. She’s a woman surrounded by assholes, doing her best to ignore them. Suffice it to say, this is a thoroughly relatable picture. People don’t pick up after themselves. They cut in line. They willingly spoil endings to others without another thought.
Ruth drinks too much and mostly keeps to herself, until somebody breaks into her house and steals her laptop and some silver passed down from her dead grandma. It’s a bridge too far, and the result is a sometimes-silly, sometimes-violent, mostly-hysterical form of vigilante justice. If the police will do anything, she will become a very amateur detective with a very amateur sidekick.

"So furious!" Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for the feature directorial debut of actor Macon Blair (seen in Green Room and Blue Ruin) titled I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. The film just premiered last night at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival to mostly rave reviews from many critics. It's a cathartic comedy-revenge-thriller about a woman played by Melanie Lynskey who goes after the people who broke into her house, but its gets extra violent and totally twisted at times. It's a fun film, with plenty of laughs, but it's not better than Blue Ruin even though it's quite similar. Also starring Elijah Wood, Jane Levy, Christine Woods, David Yow, Devon Graye, Robert Longstreet & Lee Eddy. Worth a watch. Here's the trailer for Macon Blair's I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, from YouTube: This it the story of Ruth (Melanie Lynskey), a nursing...

What would you get if you combined the acting talents of Melanie Lynskey (Togetherness) and Elijah Wood with the cinematography skills of the guy who shot Swiss Army Man? You'd get the strangely named I don't feel at home in this world anymore., a new film that marks the writing and directing debut of Blue Ruin and Green Room actor Macon Blair. Lynskey plays a woman who gets robbed and decides to hunt down the thieves with the help of her goofy, martial arts-obsessed neighbor (Wood). Of course, things don't quite pan out the way they imagine.
This movie made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival last night, but Netflix has already picked it up, so we'll all be able to see it when it arrives on the streaming service on February 24, 2017.

After making his start working on screen with writer-director Jeremy Saulnier — first with 2007’s Murder Party, then followed up by the indie smash success Blue Ruin (with Blair taking center stage), and finally with last year’s Green Room — Macon Blair has now stepped behind the camera to direct I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore. An official selection at this year’s Sundance film festival, the film follows Ruth (Malanie Lynskey), a fed up and depressed woman who hits the final straw when her house is burglarized and her deceased mother’s precious spoon gone. Now driven, she sets out on a quest — as much, perhaps, to find new purpose in life as to seek revenge — alongside her oddball neighbor (Elijah Wood). Unfortunately, the duo quickly find themselves far out of their element against the pack of thugs (including Don’t Breathe‘s Jane Levy and...

Southbound is yet another horror anthology from the people behind the V/H/S trilogy. However unlike that series of films, Southbound actually gets things right. Perfectly right.
Southbound opens and closes with Radio Silence’s The Way Out and The Way In (in that order). A book-ending tale that introduces us to two men on the run, being chased across the desert by ethereal, skeletal grim reapers from which there is no escape. Especially when the pair stop at a gas station… We return to the same tale for the closer, discovering why the pair are on the run and why they are being haunted. Radio Silence’s opener The Way Out really sets the tone for the rest of the film,...

For those of you uninspired ramblers who have been searching for a horror anthology that truly revs your engines, Southbound is an inviting attraction along a road lined with many generic places to stop. From the minds of Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath, and the Radio Silence collective come five tales of open-road horror set to the soothing voice of Larry Fessenden’s DJ narration, and the ride is surly a worthy one. The segments rarely skip a beat, and showcase the same drifting intrigue that’s created by a desolate stretch of highway that connects them all. Nothing good ever happens in the middle of nowhere, but this series of gleefully unfortunate events tends to argue otherwise with the help of some gruesome tricks, brainwashed minds, and a few skeletal demons worth a fright.

“In general, life on the road is not easy. Yesterday I saw a family of Roma camping on a cement-parking place. The children had tired, old faces and were smoking cigarettes,” writes formerly Berlin-based musician and multimedia artist Danielle de Picciotto in her graphic diary, We Are Gypsies Now, which was published by Amok Books in August. “The romanticized myth of the gypsy lifestyle is quite different in reality. Anybody who has experienced not having a home knows that it is no joke.” We Are Gypsies Now, de Picciotto’s second published book, is wondrously illustrated with the author's inky drawings, and features cover and layout design by the Jesus Lizard's David Yow. The diary recalls the planned 18-month nomadic journey de Picciotto and her husband, Alexander Hacke, a musician best known as part of post-punk industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten, undertook after putting all their stuff in storage and leaving...

In 1991, Nirvana exploded with Nevermind, instantly changing the musical landscape and ushering "alternative" music into the mainstream. Their influence was immediate and undeniable, but that year, another band would release an album that would also have a lasting impression on a new generation of musicians. Four young lads from Louisville, Kentucky known as Slint quietly dropped their final album Spiderland, but in the two decades since, it has grown into one of the most post-rock albums of all time. And now, the story of the band and those songs is being told. Indie label Touch 'N Go are reissuing Spiderland in an expansive, very limited edition this spring, and part of the package — as we previously revealed — is a new documentary "Breadcrumb Trail," directed by Spike Jonze collaborator Lance Bangs. And the trailer for the film is finally here. And it looks pretty damn great. Featuring interviews with folks like Steve Albini,...

St. Louis-area native Peter Bolte – a graduate of Webster University, returns to his home turf for All Roads Lead, a feature was shot here and in Pinckneyville, Ill. that features a local cast and crew. After discovering lost footage of a raging car fire that took the lives of two young girls, a group of filmmakers decides to investigate the stories of those involved. Their journey leads them from the concrete jungle of New York City to the rural countryside of the Midwest. In the small Illinois town of Colston, they interview and befriend residents touched by the tragic event. Hard workers struggling through trying times, the townsfolk appear to draw strength from the caring support of their community. However, as the filmmakers dig deeper, a darker side of Colston begins to emerge, and it becomes evident that the girls’ death may be more than an accident. As an ominous...

Deerhunter & Atlas Sound Frontman Bradford Cox Joins Matthew McConaughey's 'The Dallas Buyer's Club'
The years have seen countless musicians cross over into the acting world, and of late, indie films have featured their fair share of artists taking a stab at a new medium. Will Oldham (who actually was an actor first, starring as a child in "Matewan"), James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), David Yow (Jesus Lizard) and Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney) are among those who have traded the stage for a set, and now Deerhunter and Atlas Sound frontman Bradford Cox will be making the transition with the Jean-Marc Vallée-helmed '80s-set AIDS drama “The Dallas Buyer's Club.” Written by Craig Borten and Melissa Wallack, the film is based on the true story of Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey), who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986 and was given only months to live. With nothing to lose, he began experimenting with underground, non-fda-approved drugs, and wound up living longer than expected. He began getting these...

Yes, I have too much time on my hands. Here's a new feature that was fun to put together (though quite time-consuming, which makes me worry about my ability to do this every month). I look back at rock, pop, and R&B albums that came out five years ago, ten years ago, etc.

Buffalo Springfield: Again (Atco)
There was much chaos surrounding the creation of this quintet 's second album. Bassist Bruce Palmer, in some ways the soul of the band, was unavailable due to a drug charge deportation, and a string of session players took his place. Stephen Stills, who saw himself as the leader of the group, was feuding with Neil Young, who considered himself an equal, and Young actually quit -- but returned. And that's without getting into the fiasco that was the band's management team.

Heading into its 18th year in 2011, the Chicago Underground Film Festival is the longest-running underground film festival in the world. It used to be tied with the New York Underground Film Festival — both were started in 1994 — until Nyuff closed up shop in 2008.
In 1994, the Internet wasn’t the big promotional tool it is today so neither Nyuff nor Cuff that year had a website; or, if they did, those pages have since vanished off the web. So, details about what these fests screened in their first years have been sketchy. Well, until now for Cuff.
I’m not sure how I stumbled upon it, but I recently discovered that the alternative newsweekly the Chicago Reader had posted up the entire, full lineup of the first annual Chicago Underground Film Festival.

In the spirit of Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year pick, I’ve decided that I should equally pick just one film as a Movie of the Decade. And that movie is: Plaster Caster.
The criteria I used to come up with this selection was to choose the film that has had the biggest impact on my life. I’ve seen tons of fantastic underground films in the past 10 years and Plaster Caster is one of them. But, no other film has had as big an influence on all aspects of my life as this one has.
