At just 10 years old, Maxwell “Bunchie” Young is catching the eyes of thousands on social media thanks to his ferocious speed and agility in both football and track.
His talents have even earned him attention from college recruiters, but it’s his skills — combined with his giving spirit — that has made Bunchie an inspiration to kids in his community, earning him the title of Sports Illustrated Kids’ SportsKid of the Year.
“You have to give back to the people that don’t really have a lot of stuff,” Bunchie tells People. “It really feels good deep down in the heart a lot of people.

The ability to drum up interest in a brand new IP based off of a director’s name is an incredibly rare sight in the video game industry, so when it actually happens, the notion carries much more weight. Additionally, it’s a testament that says the auteur behind these experiences has a highly personable and unique style; something that isn’t easy to express in a video game when you consider that the majority are constricted to following a guideline of design choices and control schemes that work.
Swery found a way to shatter that mould, and in some ways rewrote the book on what a video game could be with Deadly Premonition. Yes, it is one of the most polarizing games ever made (some sites gave it a score as low as 2/10, while others awarded it a perfect rating), but that is also the single greatest compliment you can give it.

If early fundraising were to decide the race for the California Senate’s 26th district, former WGA West President Patric Verrone would finish a distant sixth. The most recent campaign finance filings show that Verrone raised $44,753 through March 17 – far less than five others in the race. Candidates will have to file one more round of funding reports this month before the June 3 primary. For the moment, however, Verrone has a lot of opponents ahead of him in the money race, led by Manhattan Beach Mayor Amy Howorth, who has $381,725; Santa Monica school board member Ben Allen ($253,331); Dr. Vito Imbasciani, a state surgeon for the California National Guard ($183,874); former Assemblywoman Betsy Butler ($152,487); and Sandra Fluke, the women’s rights attorney and activist who Rush Limbaugh famously called a “slut” ($133,415). Trailing Verrone in the money race are Seth Stodder, a former policy director at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency...

Does This Internet Personality Own Her Naked Photos She Threw Away or the Artists Who Found Them? Who's to say? by Liam Mathews Molly Soda lives in Detroit. She used to live in Chicago. A guy in Chicago found some of her old photos in the trash and gave them to another guy in Chicago named Paul-David Young, "an occasional curator who works in the imaging department at the Art Institute." Young was fascinated by the photos, and figured he had discovered some sort of found-art treasure trove. He decided that he was going to escalate this anonymous (so he thought) girl's photography into art. He organized a gallery show and the Chicago Reader wrote about it. "Some are trash, some have merit," Young told the Reader. "There are moments of brilliance and bravery and moments of youthful narcissism. They're very [...]...

Following on from the Top 10 Screenwriting Tips from Script to Screen post, I thought I’d write a companion piece on pitching, as Saturday’s Script to Screen conference also featured “Pitch Intermission” sessions in which a panel of experts fielded pitches and then offered advice on how the screenwriters could hone their spiel. The industry figures giving their insider expertise were: Ron Simons, the producer of Gun Hill Road and Night Catches Us; Dana O’Keefe, a sales agent at Cinetic; Dia Sokol, a producer of both MTV reality shows and Mumblecore movies; and David Young, head writer at CollegeHumor.com. Below are the best 10 bits of advice that were handed out.
1. Wear your heart on your sleeve. “Put across why you’re passionate about in your project,” said Ron Simons, “because that will help us be passionate about it too.”
2. Keep it loose. “Try and be personal and conversational,...

Courtesy Comedy CentralNEW York, New York (X17online) - The creators of South Park apologized to the Web site CollegeHumor.com on Friday for using dialogue from a video on their site satirizing the summer blockbuster Inception. "It’s just because we do the show in six days, and we’re stupid and we just threw it together, But in the end, there are some lines that we had to call and apologize for." Matt Stone, who created "South Park" with Trey Parker, told The New York Times Friday in a telephone interview. Dan Gurewitch and David Young wrote the video Inception Characters Don’t Understand Inception, which was posted on CollegeHumor on Aug. 2. Coincidentally the South Park episode shown on Wednesday had a scene that contained dialogue similar or identical to the web-site's skit. Apparently Matt Stone and Trey Parker could not find a movie theater showing "Inception," or...

'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have apologized for accidentally plagiarizing the website CollegeHumor.
As we reported last week, CollegeHumor writer Dan Gurewitch blogged about the similarities between an Oct. 20 'South Park' spoof of 'Inception' and one that he co-created with David Young. Gurewitch included a line-by-line comparison.
Parker and Stone then confessed to lifting the material, though unconsciously, CNN reports.
"We thought their joke was that a lot of those lines were actually in the movie, showing that the 'Inception' characters didn't even know 'Inception.' That was a mistake, and it was an honest mistake," said Stone. "We're stupid and we just threw it together."

"South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker admitted to similarity between their recent "Inception" spoof and an episode done by web comedy video CollegeHumor. "It's just because we do the show in six days, and we're stupid and we just threw it together," Stone said in the confession. "But in the end, there are some lines that we had to call and apologize for."
On October 20, "South Park" aired an episode called "Insheeption" where many dialogues are noticably too similar to the web video called "Inception Characters Don't Understand Inception" which was written by Dan Gurewitch and David Young, and posted on CollegeHumor on August 2. While CollegeHumor said, "Shared unconstructed dream space" to explain what Limbo is, the Comedy Central cartoon said "Empty scary dream space."
Another example is when an 'expert' in "South Park" said, "We need to move them all to the next dream level before the projections kill them.

One key to understanding Hollywood labor is a tool that was invented thousands of years ago: the calendar. That much became clear in the last round of major negotiations, which lasted from 2007 to 2009, and featured a writers strike and a SAG stalemate. I covered those events as they occurred, and they’re also the topic of my forthcoming book, “Hollywood on Strike!,” which is due out next month. So with the SAG-AFTRA negotiations upon us, let’s look at what the 2010-2011 bargaining cycle has in store.SAG and AFTRAThe SAG and AFTRA negotiations with the AMPTP (studio alliance) begin on Monday the 27th, less than a week away. They’ll focus on the SAG Codified basic Agreement (which covers film and television), SAG Television Agreement (a supplement which adds more detail regarding television), and AFTRA’s Exhibit A (which covers primetime scripted television). Exhibit A is largely, though not entirely,...

Hollywood labor negotiations are notoriously fractious and fragile. Distractions and roadblocks can pop up with little provocation or warning, and with a lot of explosive recrimination.
But the big surprise this bargaining season could be the very lack of drama. For several political and economic reasons, the dealmaking this time out could be the least combative in many years.
To take just one major sign: A source close to the SAG-aftra negotiations indicated that the DVD-residuals issue, a perennial battleground and bargaining chip in every negotiation cycle during the past 20 years, didn't even make it into the guilds' joint package of bargaining proposals approved last weekend. This despite resistance from board members in several camps.
On the heels of national board elections at SAG and the WGA, formal negotiations will begin Sept. 27 between SAG and AFTRA, bargaining jointly, and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers for a new TV/theatrical basic agreement.

Editor’S Note: This article was first published at Film Music Magazine in response to Bruce Broughton’s comments published with Chris Alpiar’s article “What I Hope, Want and Expect from a Composers Union”.
Follow The Thread:
Jai Meghan: Are You “Pro”, Union? Bruce Broughton: An Amcl Response
——————
We need to make plain one fundamental fact and then let’s start the debate:
The WGA Agreement Has Nothing To Do With AMPTP Negotiations — They Are Completely Separate.
The Amcl committee does its supporters no good by confusing the WGA with the AMPTP and this must stop.
This parsing of words hides a potential cancer which can eat up what we have worked 4+ years to help organize. When we parse words instead of explaining positions, we sow the seeds of disloyalty and mistrust.
We must create a union that does what is right, not merely what is convenient.

Tuesday night, April 19, 2010, the Association of Media Composers and Lyricists' (Amcl) presented their second public meeting concerning the effort to unionize composers and lyricists under the umbrella of the Teamsters Local 399.
Held in Beverly Hills at the Writers Guild Theater, the official proceedings began with a welcome message from Amcl spokesman Bruce Broughton, who outlined that the new focus of the Amcl unionization effort would be to secure "benefits only" for composers and lyricists—a message quite different from November's initial meeting, where the committee announced that "wage minimums and working conditions" would also be included in the negotiations.
Speaking to SCOREcast just prior to the start of the meeting, Bruce Broughton told us, "I'm happy. This is a great turnout and we have a solid plan. I think we are ready now to really get something done. We finally know what we are doing."

A SAG strike in the upcoming negotiating cycle is “difficult to envision,” a source from SAG’s moderate faction, Unite for Strength, told me, though he/she cautioned that avoiding one will require that management negotiate reasonably and he/she wouldn’t take the strike option off the table (as, indeed, no union could).
The source also said SAG’s upcoming January 31 national board meeting will probably feature a move towards resurrecting joint bargaining with AFTRA, adding that he/she was confident that bargaining later this year would indeed be jointly conducted. If the board does act on January 31, look for AFTRA’s board to respond at its February 27 meeting.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, suggested the SAG-AFTRA unity move might come in the form of a resolution committing SAG to engage in joint bargaining and empowering someone – David White (SAG’s National Executive Director), Ken Howard...

Simon & Schuster and Hachette have said they'll be delaying the launch of some future e-books until after the hardcovers have been on sale for a while. It's a desperate move to hang on to the old ways of publishing, before e-reader use explodes.
Simon & Schuster's plans involve a four month delay of 35 big titles it'll be launching early in 2010, sandwiching release of the electronic copy between the hardcover launch and softcover editions. Hachette's plans aren't known in as much detail, but are apparently pretty similar. Essentially these moves are placing the electronic editions at a lower importance inside the publishing companies than the hardcover ink-and-paper ones...but as we know, electronic editions are pretty much guaranteed to be the future of books. So what the heck are S&S and Hachette messing around for?

The WGA strike may be over, but according to an arbitration filing by the guild Wednesday, its members have not seen one penny of the new-media residuals agreed upon in their new contract with the members of the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers.
According to the WGA West, the AMPTP has "failed to comply with the contract negotiated at the end of the guild's 100-day strike and are not paying residuals for writers' work that is reused on new media."
The missing payments include reuse of work for programs sold as electronic downloads, also known as Electronic Sell-Through, which involves the sale of video content online that allows the purchaser to keep a copy of the program permanently.
In a statement, the AMPTP responded: "The understanding we reached with the WGA was exactly the same as the one we reached with the DGA. The DGA deal calls for the...

Yen Press has been moved from the Young Adult division of Hachette Book Group to become an imprint of the company’s Orbit line of science fiction titles. Orbit was already an existing imprint and is now being upgraded to a separate division, much as DelRey is an imprint and separate division of Random House. They too have a line of Manga.
As part of the shuffle, Rich Johnson, co-founder of the line, will be leaving Hachette on October 31. Co-founder Kurt Hassler will remain to run the titles, reporting to Tim Holman, newly named VP and Publisher of the Orbit division.
Yen Press was founded in 2007, largely by Johnson who had previously been VP-Sales for DC Comics. They announced an ambitious of line Manga titles in addition to Yen Plus, a monthly anthology magazine ala Shonen Jump, which debuted July 29.
