It is certainly true that in much of the world and in many circumstances, women are powerless, helpless to control the situations they find themselves enmeshed in at the behest of men. It is true that women are very often pawns in the games of men. But there is a whole lotta frustration to be found in a movie about such a woman forced to play men’s games who doesn’t fight back... not even a little. I would like to believe that up-and-coming Mexican director Gerardo Naranjo (who cowrote Miss Bala’s script with Mauricio Katz) is making some sort of feminist statement in his tale of Laura Guerrero (Stephanie Sigman, who embodies a palpable power in spite of the film she finds herself in), a poor but pretty young woman from Tijuana who dreams of a beauty pageant win to lift her out of her poverty and desperation.

Holy crap. I didn’t know being a beauty queen was this hard. Just kidding, of course, though for Stephanie Sigman’s Laura, her dreams of being a beauty queen is on par with going to war. Some very bad men want her to do some very bad things, and it’s definitely not for the weak of heart. I’d like to think there’s a happy ending at the end of this tale for our beauty queen, but let’s face it, that’s probably not in the cards. Check out some images and the English-subtitled trailer for director Gerardo Naranjo’s “Miss Bala”. The story of a young woman clinging on to her dream to become a beauty contest queen in a Mexico dominated by organized crime…Miss Bala explores the many extremes of modern Mexican society when the world of beauty pageants and the current drug war collide.

Miss Bala Trailer. Gerardo Naranjo‘s Miss Bala (2011) movie trailer stars Stephanie Sigman, Irene Azuela, Miguel Couturier, James Russo, and Jose Yenque. Miss Bala‘s plot synopsis: “The story of a young woman clinging on to her dream to become a beauty contest queen in a Mexico dominated by organized crime…Miss Bala explores the many extremes of modern Mexican society when the world of beauty pageants and the current drug war collide.”
This looks really good, a mixture of Maria Full of Grace and City of God. It look like Laura Guerrero’s dreams become intermingled with a nightmare.
More on Miss Bala:
Reviews have pegged Miss Bala as a film that savagely depicts the drug wars that have ravaged parts of Mexico. At the same time, they praise the film’s complex scripting and characterization, which don’t reduce the participants to caricatures or simple outlines. It...

Focus Features has just released a brand new trailer for their upcoming film Beginners.
From writer/director Mike Mills (Thumbsucker) comes a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments. Beginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Golden Globe Award nominee Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent of “Inglourious Basterds”) only months after his father Hal (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who – following 44 years of marriage – came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they’d ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery,...

For many, it was the best episode in Lost history. Exploring the backstory of Richard and playing like a one-hour movie, "Ab Aeterno" also gave viewers Jacob's explanation of the island as a cork on a very dangerous bottle of wine.
ABC will re-air the episode on Tuesday.
We spoke this week with Jose Yenque, the veteran actor who played a key character in Richard Alpert's life: In "Ab Aeterno," he portrayed the doctor that refused to treat Richard's wife and was accidentally killed a result.
How did this role come about? Was Yenque always a fan of Lost? Here's what he told TV Fanatic...
How did you land this role on Lost?
I was in the middle of filming Mike Mills’ feature Beginners with Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGreger when I got the call to read for the role. We were filming an exterior scene that day with extras.

You can also view a few sneak peeks and a promo that we posted, if you don't mind some spoilers.

The March 23 episode will focus on Richard Alpert and – God willing – we'll finally get to learn more about his backstory. From recent episodes I think it's safe to assume what many had suspected – that Richard is somehow tied to the Black Rock ship (possibly as a slave on the ship), that Jacob seemed to "gift" him with immortality. From the synopsis below we can see that both Jacob and the Man in Black will be making appearances, so flashbacks to Richard's life are probably likely.
I like the side-ways universe but, as I told Doc Arzt last night, I'd rather the show be focusing on the island and solving its mysteries than showing us another universe with familiar characters. We still don't know how or why the never-crash universe is important and I'm getting kind of antsy. So if a Richard-centric episode will focus on the island, then I'm all for it.
