Despite a few bumps and an over-reliance on familiar cliches, the big-screen anticipated adaptation of the popular video game "Gran Turismo" still dazzles thanks to Neill Blomkamp's solid direction and the performances from all involved.
Featuring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Djimon Hounsou, "Gran Turismo" chronicles the true-life story of Jann Mardenborough -- a dedicated gamer who seized the opportunity of a lifetime: racing in the major leagues. Not virtually, mind you, but on a real track alongside genuine cars and professional drivers. While the script takes liberties with the factual narrative, the core essence remains, ensuring the audience enjoys a nice helping of grounded drama to accompany the popcorn-fueled excitement.
Naturally, no adaptation of a video game is replete without paying homage to its source material. Blomkamp crafts a film centered around the world of "Gran Turismo" that seamlessly resonates with the essence of the game itself.

Neill Blomkamp’s “Gran Turismo” movie from Sony Pictures packs all the adrenaline and all the emotions. Based on a true story, the film follows young Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe) as he gets the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go from a video game racer to a real race car driver. It all started with Gran Turismo game creator Kazunori Yamauchi (Takehiro Hira) who got ahold of an automobile simulator and transformed it into a very real racing experience for gamers. Dreamer and Nissan marketing executive Danny Moore (Orlando Bloom) took the love for the game a step further by giving the best players a chance to go through a Gran Turismo academy to compete for the chance at racing on some of the professional courses featured in the game.

In his new film Gran Turismo, director Neill Blomkamp steps away from the sci-fi and horror tales he’s been spinning to tell a story—taken from real life—of a video gamer who became so good at simulated race car driving on the titular PlayStation game that he actually made the leap to becoming a professional race car driver, reportedly driving in more than 200 races and managing to hold his own against drivers who had been behind the wheel their entire lives.
The young man in question is Jann Mardenborough, played by Archie Madekwe in the film, and he is a native of England, although he spent most of his life growing up in Cardiff, Wales. It’s been pointed out already that neither Madekwe nor anyone else in his family employs a Welsh accent—something that a lot of less discerning viewers (especially in the U.

Fresh off the $1 billion-plus success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the next big-deal video game adaptation has dropped its first trailer and poster. Rather than attempt to make a workable fictional narrative from a series of racing video games, the filmmakers have opted to adapt a true story connected to the games.
The film, penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, and helmed by “District 11” director Neil Blomkamp, is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe in the film) whose video game skills won a series of Nissan competitions and allowed him a shot at being an actual race car driver. “From Gamer to Racer,” the tagline states and it’s an interesting narrative that would be intriguing even sans the IP surrounding it.

The PlayStation video game franchise “Gran Turismo” inspired the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough, a young teenager who began a racing career. Now, director Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) is bringing that story to the big screen.
“Gran Turismo” stars Archie Madekwe as the aforementioned teen who aspires to become a professional race car driver with the help of his trainer (David Harbour) and a motorsport marketing executive (Orlando Bloom). Djimon Hounsou portrays Mardenborough’s father, while Darren Barnet plays a Gt Academy driver threatened by his new opponent.
“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was originally set to helm the feature in 2015. Also that same year, Blomkamp was attached to a fifth “Alien” film starring Sigourney Weaver.

Based on a true story, “Gran Turismo” follows a young teenager who’s obsessed with playing the racing video game and gradually takes his controller skills onto a real racetrack with hopes to become a professional race car driver. Archie Madekwe plays the film’s main character, with David Harbour as his racing trainer, Djimon Hounsou as the teenager’s father and Orlando Bloom as a motorsport marketing executive. Darren Barnet plays a respected Gt Academy driver who feels threatened by the teenager’s fast-growing success.
The racing simulation video game franchise began in 1997 with a self-titled entry from developer Polyphony Digital, spearheaded by Kazunori Yamauchi.

Sony’s “Gran Turismo” is an interesting experiment — a movie adaptation of the long running video game series that also manages to be based on a true story. And at the Consumer Electronic Show 2023 on Wednesday, the studio unveiled a preview that seeks to assure you this will in fact be the kind of movie you’ll want to watch in a movie theater.
How do we know? Because the film’s main stars — Archie Madekwe, David Harbour and Orlando Bloom — made sure to mention it whenever the camera pans to them. But also, the footage we see from the actual movie does, in fact, look pretty sick, so we’ll go ahead and trust them. Watch the clip above now.

Gearheads are gonna be eatin' good very, very soon. It's been rumored for months that Neill Blomkamp was going to be directing a movie for Sony based on the ridiculously popular "Gran Turismo" video game series, and thanks to an exclusive release from The Hollywood Reporter, these rumors are now a reality. Best known for his action-packed forays into science fiction, Blomkamp's film will be based on not just the best-selling PlayStation game of all time of the same name, but also a true story inspired by one of the game's players.
Considering "Gran Turismo" is a hyper-realistic racing simulator known more for its remarkably accurate driving physics emulation and licensed vehicles, the lack of a plot had plenty wondering how it would even be possible to turn the game into a feature film. Fortunately, a script by Jason Hall ("American Sniper") and Zach Baylin ("King Richard") has the answer.

Sony was not kidding when they promised to adapt several of their flagship game franchises into major motion pictures. With adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Days Gone, Gravity Rush, Twisted Metal, The Last of Us, and more on the way, the studio is determined to bring gamers out of their basements and into movie theaters. Another project Sony Pictures will bring to the grand stage is Sony and Polyphony’s Gran Turismo, based on the acclaimed racing game that helped redefine expectations for the genre. PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures are collaborating once again to bring a video game adaptation to the big screen, this time with the popular racing simulator, "Gran Turismo." The two companies took in hundreds of millions with their collaboration for "Uncharted," and with "Gran Turismo" serving as the most popular game on the PlayStation console, it's clear they're hoping to make lightning strike twice.
First created by Polyphony and Kazunori Yamauchi all the way back in 1997, "Gran Turismo" is currently in its seventh installment, with the series having sold more than 85 million copies. The game's popularity is due in large...

In the hours leading up to Sony’s E3 keynote yesterday evening, the Japanese platform-holder carried out a little bout of housekeeping to ensure none of its in-development titles were given short shrift.
That information dump, one which allowed Sony to keep its annual presentation relatively concise, heralded news of a release date for Housemarque’s side-scroller Matterfall (August 15th), along with further announcements for Knack 2 (September 5th), Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (November 10th), and Gran Turismo Sport, Polyphony’s long-awaited racing facsimile that it now expected to screech onto PS4 later this year – fall 2017, to be specific.
The studio’s CEO Kazunori Yamauchi, a stalwart of the Gt series since ’97, conceded that the dev team isn’t quite ready to commit to a firm date – hence the vague fall 2017 window. But rest assured, the end product is purportedly shaping up to be the best entry in the iconic racing franchise to date.

Last time Polyphony Digital posted a status report on Gran Turismo Sport, it estimated that the racing facsimile was around 70 percent complete. With a tentative November release date in place, said update sparked some apprehension among the franchise’s loyal community that Sport would be ready in time for launch. It now appears those concerns weren’t too far off base.
Taking to PlayStation Blog this morning, Founder of Gt studio Polyphony Digital Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Gran Turismo Sport has now been postponed into 2017. Citing heightened expectations – among “fans and from within our team” – and the massive development task that Sport entails, there was no mention of a new release date, but it seems that those holding out for Gran Turismo‘s long-awaited debut on PlayStation 4 will have to wait a little while longer.

Polyphony Digital has made the conscious decision to double down on improved frame rate in Gran Turismo Sport – just don’t expect the racing facsimile to feature dynamic weather when it launches in November.
Word comes by way of GTPlanet, who conducted an interview with Polyphony CEO Kazunori Yamauchi. There, the series stalwart noted that due to the performance issues that surfaced in Gran Turismo 6 – issues largely attributed to the inclusion of dynamic weather – the creative team have decided to favor a smooth gameplay experience over added features.
We opted to not have the transitions in the race this time in order to raise the frame-rate and the quality of the image during the race. So the user will be able to set that before they enter the race. So you’ll still be able to have night races, morning, races at dawn, dusk, and so on.

Joseph Kosinski, the director of sci-fi movies "Oblivion" and "Tron: Legacy," is in early negotiations to direct "Gran Turismo," Sony's adaptation of the hit PlayStation video game. Plot details are being kept a secret but Kazunori Yamauchi, the lead designer of the "Gran Turismo" series, recently revealed that it would center on a video game player turned racer. "Grad Turismo" has a script by Alex Tse (Watchmen). If Koskinski boards the project, he will work on a new version of the script.

Not deterred by the middling success of last year’s Need for Speed, Sony is pushing ahead with its big-screen adaptation of Gran Turismo, and today, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Oblivion and Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski has entered talks to helm the project.
While it’s not necessarily a done deal, as the outlet states the director is still in negotiations, early signs appear to be promising. Should Kosinski sing along the dotted line, he will work alongside Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti, Josh Bratman, DeVon Franklin and Elizabeth Cantillon, who are all on board as producers.

A feature-length documentary about Sony's racing game series Gran Turismo has appeared on the web. You can watch it right here...
Since 1997, the Gran Turismo series of racing games has celebrated the seductive curves of the world's most beautiful cars, and the sheer white-knuckle thrill of driving - well, assuming you're not stuck in a traffic jam, that is.
As an audio-visual birthday present to itself, Sony commissioned a feature-length documentary, which covers the history of the videogame series, and offers insight from its creator Kazunori Yamauchi and other prominent designers involved in its making.
Paying for an entire film about something you've made might sound a bit self-indulgent, but the documentary's slickly-made and quite informative: the stuff about Gran Turismo's impact on real-world racing is quite interesting, for example.
The documentary (proper title: Kaz: Pushing The Virtual Divide) originally appeared on Hulu earlier this year, but has just landed on YouTube.

Every gamer, whether he or she is the hardcore or strictly casual type, is well aware of the impact that "Gran Turismo" has had on Sony's PlayStation brand. It's also a fairly big deal when it comes to the world of games as a whole; "Gt" is more or less the only name in town when it comes to all encompassing and super realistic racing sims.
Nevertheless, we might still be missing the whole picture. And who better to ask than people involved in the real thing, as in actual racing folk? Turns out, they think it's a pretty big deal too.
Or to be more exact, they believe Kazunori Yamauchi, the primary force behind "Gran Turismo", to be a pretty big deal. And given that his baby is celebrating its 15-year anniversary, Sony decided to whip up a documentary dedicated to Kaz. Here's the trailer:
Some, perhaps many, gamers take driving games for granted.

Gran Turismo fans are some of the most passionate fans I can imagine a sports or racing game series having. That’s no slight, either – people get incredibly excited every time a new Gt finally becomes available, and a large part of the that has to do with the passion and life’s work of series creator Kazunori Yamauchi. Sony recognizes this, and to prove it they’ll be releasing a documentary about the man, titled Kaz: Pushing the Virtual Divide.
Now, I’m all for celebrating brilliant gaming minds, but isn’t it a little bit of a stretch to compare Kaz to Ferdinand Magellan, of all people? Apparently the trailer doesn’t think so. It got it’s point across — that Kaz is a driven visionary — but why not compare him to Miyamoto, or Sid Meier? Even an iconic film director would have made sense. But a guy who literally circumnavigated the earth?...

Speaking during the studio’s Gamescom panel in Cologne, Germany, CEO of Polyphony Digital Kazunori Yamauchi has once again stated that Gran Turismo 6 on PlayStation 4 is being considered, however, it could well materialise as Gran Turismo 7 instead. Speaking with Joystiq, the company’s head honcho believes that due to excessive development window, it’s entirely possible that Gt 6 and 7 may be modelled as one game on PlayStation 4.
It’s been widely rumoured by industry experts that Gran Turismo 6 will eventually race onto the next-gen hardware. However, considering Yamauchi’s statements, it seems that when this port to PlayStation 4 does eventually materialise, it could arrive in the form of Gran Turismo 7. From the moment that Gran Turismo 6 was first outed by Sony execs, the biggest question surrounding the recently announced racing simulator was if Polyphony Digital was planning to launch it for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, or on both consoles as a split-gen release. At the game’s reveal yesterday the answer to that question seemed to be the PS3 exclusive route, however, we are now getting word that a PS4 version is being “considered” by Sony.
Speaking to GameSpot, Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that the studio is kicking around the idea of developing a PlayStation 4 version of the racer at some point in the distant future.
“We have a PS4 version in mind for the future, but for this holiday season we thought that it would be best for users to release the PS3 version. I thought the best scenario would be for the game to come out, and...

Set to the backing of punters crying “Are those graphics real?” Sony has revealed that Gran Turismo 6 is coming to the PlayStation 3.
Celebrating 15 years of the racing sim, Gran Turismo 6 will offer even more realism to the already hyper-realistic title, and a new game engine will allow the developers more flexibility and make Dlc easier to implement, expanding the game long after its initial release.
Alongside the main game will be a mobile and web application which will allow fans to continue the GT6 social experience on the go when they're not sat on the sofa in front of their PS3s.
The title is set to include all of the cars and tracks from GT5, along with new additions and thousands of custom parts, and will also include seven new locations including,...

Eurogamer's on the ground in Silverstone where Sony has announced that the latest entry in the "Gran Turismo" series will be out later this year for the PS3.
In their reveal this morning, Sony and Polyphony Digital promised fans that all of the vehicles from "Gran Turismo 5" would be returning alongside seven new tracks and, of course, hundreds more meticulously-rendered cars.
Sony wasn't talking about "GT6" on the PS4, but the announcement does explain Polyphony's absence during the PS4 reveal. Some of us assembled during the February press conference were wondering if the long-running (and oft-delayed) series was being replaced by Evolution Studios' "DriveClub." For the moment, that doesn't appear to be the case, though as series creator Kazunori Yamauchi promised Sony and Polyphony would support "Gran Turismo 6" well after its launch with Dlc.
