Gold Gala is the type of weekend where you can share an intimate booth at L.A. culinary hotspot Yangban with a Pulitzer winner (journalist Jose Antonio Vargas) and a top festival exec (TIFF chief programming officer Anita Lee) on Friday night and then mimosas and a sound bath at the Four Seasons the next morning with an Olympic figure skater and a former Miss Universe (Madison Chock and R’Bonney Gabriel, respectively) – all as part of mere pre-gaming to the titular main event, which took place at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday night.
Ostensibly a cultural celebration and awards dinner from Asian Pacific power broker network Gold House, the third annual Gold Gala was simultaneously an haute couture showcase (fashion designer Prabal Gurung served as its creative director) and a family reunion, with 600 Api talent and leaders from across multiple industries turning out in their finest “heritage black tie,...

Fans await the cast reveal for Dancing with the Stars Season 33, as each season brings various stars from acting, singing, social media, and sports.
Many sports stars have captured the coveted Mirrorball Trophy, now named the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy, in the late DWTS judge’s honor.
Rumors suggested the show’s producers wanted to score big by bringing basketball superstar Caitlin Clark in for the upcoming season.
Clark captured much attention throughout the college basketball season, and DWTS desperately wanted her as part of the cast.
However, an insider says despite them “bending over backwards” to get Clark on the show, she “respectfully declined.”
That was due to Clark having other things to focus on, including her basketball career, and she has her eye on a few shows on which she’d prefer to appear.

“Dancing with the Stars” premiered in 2005 with a focus on teaching celebrities some fancy footwork. But along the way the professional dancers who teach and partner with those celebrity amateurs became stars in their own right. Many of them returned to the show year after year, and over a dozen have won the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy over the course of the series. Scroll down to see every single “DWTS” pro champion, listed by their number of victories.
It’s fitting that the “DWTS” pros have become fan-favorites because they’re not just dancers. It all started in 1988 with an obsession: Canadian comic Carolyn Taylor, now known as one of the stars and co-creators of “Baroness Von Sketch Show,” was a “closeted 15-year-old” watching Olympic figure skating in her aunt’s living room. She recalls Katarina Witt performing a free skate to “Carmen” in an iconic red costume. At the very end, Witt performatively lay down on the ice — and Taylor just wanted to lie next to her.
“It was one of those foundational moments,” Taylor tells Variety. “But then I went on with my life, and didn’t pursue skating or Olympics in any capacity.”
Fast forward to 2016. Taylor was driving in the car with her girlfriend when Whitney Houston’s 1992 song “I Have Nothing” came on the radio. “It was as if I had heard it for the first time,” she recalls. She had a vision of “a professional pairs, gold medalist skating routine,...

After Len Goodman‘s retirement on “Dancing with the Stars” in November, every fan has been wondering who will replace him at the judges’ table in Season 32. Shirley Ballas, who succeeded Goodman as head judge on Britain’s “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2017, has been speculated as one of his replacements, but the ballroom dancer says it’s looking like it’ll no one will take his seat.
“I spoke to [executive producer and showrunner] Conrad Green. I think at the moment they’re gonna keep it to three judges,” Ballas recently said on the British talk show “Loose Women.” (watch below).
This jibes with “Entertainment Tonight’s” report after the Season 31 finale in November that cited a source claiming that the show will “likely to go back to a three-judge format.” “Dancing” started out with three judges in 2005 — head judge Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli — and grew to four with Julianne Hough in Seasons 19, 20, 23 and 24. When Goodman,...

It took a while, but Derek Hough finally has some company and it’s fitting that it’s from his Bff. Thanks to his win on Monday’s Season 31 finale with Charli D’Amelio, Mark Ballas has joined Hough as the only pros with at least three Mirrorball trophies on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Hough, of course, holds the record at six wins, so Ballas still has some ways to go, but this was a big hump to get over as a third win has been elusive for the pros. Before Monday, six pros had been stuck at two victories: Ballas, Cheryl Burke (who retired on the finale), Julianne Hough, Kym Johnson, Peta Murgatroyd and Val Chmerkovskiy. Julianne Hough and Johnson have long left the show, but Ballas, Burke and Chmerkovskiy have frequently made finals over the years only to come up short in the quest for three. Chermkovskiy and his...

There was a funny moment on “Dancing with the Stars” on “Michael Buble Night” when guest judge Buble told “Bachelorette” star Gabby Windey that she was so good he wondered if she had previous dance experience. She sheepishly confirmed that she worked as a professional cheerleader in the past. It’s no secret that some of the “amateur” dancers who come onto “DWTS” are less amateur than others, and for no one is that the case more than Charli D’Amelio., who was a competitive dancer for over 10 years. Could that backfire against the TikTok star?
Any celeb has good reason to want to downplay their prior experience on “DWTS.” There have been shocking early eliminations in recent years of stars who might have been perceived to be ringers, like eighth-place Heather Morris in season 24 and 10th-place Tinashe in season 27. “Dancing with the Stars” judge Derek Hough holds the record for the most championships among professional dancers. He won the Mirror Ball Trophy six times over the course of his run on the show. That’s even more remarkable when you consider that no other pro dancer on the show has ever won more than two. It’s unlikely that anyone will come close to that record before the show ultimately runs its course — whenever that will be — but this season there are multiple double winners who could finally achieve that elusive hat trick.

Debuting in 2005, “DWTS” pairs an amateur celebrity contestant with a professional dance partner who teaches them routines in styles ranging from waltz to salsa to contemporary. Those dances are scored by a panel of judges, but those scores only make up half of the results. Who advances to the next round — and who ultimately wins the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy — is half determined by the judges’ scores and half by the votes of viewers watching at home.

“I’m not a singer or a dancer, but this is probably a little bit more in my wheelhouse,” Guadagnino told Variety. “So I was like, I’m a little scared but I think I can make this work let’s try it. I didn’t really even know I was gonna make it past like week one, so I ended up falling in love with it and really getting competitive with it. It was great experience.”
Guadagnino said his dancing experience comes down to breakdancing at parties as a kid.

At long last, the remaining celebrities on “The Masked Dancer” will all be performing together on the same stage on Wednesday night. That’s right — it’s time for the Super 6! Cotton Candy, Exotic Bird, Hammerhead, Sloth, Tulip and Zebra all survived the early group rounds and will come together this week for the second stage of competition. For the next several episodes we’ll watch these finalists dance their hearts out in front of the panelists and viewers at home, until only one remains as the winner of the Diamond Mask trophy.

Season 1 of “The Masked Dancer” is only halfway over, but already the winner’s circle is shaping up to be a battle between Tulip vs. Cotton Candy. Representing the plant kingdom is Tulip, a pink-petaled contestant who dances with her emotions on her leaves. And standing in for all foodstuffs is Cotton Candy, a pastel-colored confection who the judges suspect is a professional dancer. Who do You think will go the distance and take home the Diamond Mask trophy during the February season finale? Make your winner predictions before the Super 6 episode airs Wednesday night on Fox.

Elizabeth Smart wasn’t interested at first in appearing on Fox’s “The Masked Dancer.” But after her grandmother passed away, Smart said she had an epiphany.
“She certainly lived life to the fullest,” Smart said. “As I was sitting at her funeral, thinking about life and death, I just thought, it’s okay to have fun. It’s okay to do something happy. Not everything I do has to be 100% serious all the time. I’m more than just a one-sided person, so why not.”

Even before “Dancing with the Stars” began its 29th season, figure skater Johnny Weir seemed like a natural front-runner, but it took him a while to find his footing in the ballroom. He finally had a breakthrough on “Disney Night,” though, going from the middle of the pack to the top of the judges’ leaderboard. Watch his game-changing rumba above.
Weir has a lot to live up to. He’s an Olympic figure skater like three previous Mirror Ball champions: Kristi Yamaguchi, Meryl Davis and Adam Rippon. And he has a vibrant, outgoing personality like Rippon that, on paper, made him seem like an almost inevitable champion. However, he didn’t seem quite as comfortable as his predecessors in his first couple of weeks. His season premiere cha cha scored straight 6s from the judges for a total of 18 out of 30. On September 2 “Dancing with the Stars” announced the celebrities who will compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy in season 29. And now you can predict who will win the competition series. You can place your bets here in our predictions center now and every week until a champion is crowned this fall. You can also bet on who will be eliminated, who will get the highest scores and who will get the lowest scores.
It’s tricky to forecast the winner this early. After all, the competition hasn’t even started yet. But we can get some hints about the potential of some celebs based on the history of “DWTS.” For instance, football players often make the finals, and four of them have won, so this year’s NFL alum, Super Bowl champion Vernon Davis, must immediately be considered a force to be reckoned with.

“Dancing with the Stars” announced its season 29 celebrities on September 2. So who are the contestants vying for the Mirror Ball Trophy when the season premieres on September 14? Scroll down to see the complete list.
You’ve always got to watch out for athletes, who have a long tradition of winning “DWTS.” Super Bowl champion Vernon Davis is hoping to become the fifth NFL star to take home the grand prize, following Emmitt Smith, Hines Ward, Donald Driver and Rashad Jennings. But coming from such a strong tradition of gridiron dancers can be a double-edged sword because it raises expectations from the very beginning.
Also with high expectations will be Johnny Weir, a figure skater who won three US Nationals titles, medaled once at the World Championships and competed at the Olympics twice. He would be the fourth figure skater to prevail on “DWTS,” following Kristi Yamaguchi, Meryl Davis and Adam Rippon.

Looking back on the winners from previous seasons, it pays to be a pro athlete, and it’s easy to understand why. It’s grueling for celebrities to learn new physical skills every week as they train new dances, so celebs who already have athletic backgrounds tend to have the fitness, stamina, and training regimen to keep up with the frenetic pace.

It’s better to give than to receive, and the judges’ very generous donation of a 30 for Bobby Bones‘ freestyle has saved him and “Dancing with the Stars” from further ignominy. Without that 30, he would’ve been the first winner who didn’t receive a perfect score during their run.
A perfect score for Bones and his partner Sharna Burgess was by no means guaranteed. He had never received a higher single score than an 8 and never scored higher than a 24, first achieved in Week 7, and his dancing level, frankly, didn’t really warrant much higher than that. But as the judges are wont to do sometimes, they handed out perfect scores for everyone’s freestyles on Monday’s finale, which is also kind of insulting to Milo Manheim, Evanna Lynch and Alexis Ren; if Bones’ half-soliloquy, half-dance deserved a 30, then their far technically superior routines deserved 40s. Age is just a number, and Milo Manheim might prove that adage true again. The 17-year-old is one of the frontrunners to win “Dancing with the Stars” and would in turn become the show’s youngest male champ ever.
The “Zombies” star, who has the second highest average score this season, would break the record currently held by Jordan Fisher, then 23 when he took home the Mirrorball trophy in Season 25. Fisher had ended the 21-season, 10-and-a-half-year reign of Apolo Anton Ohno, who won Season 4 on his 25th birthday.

Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke received the first perfect score of the season on “Dancing with the Stars” for their sizzling samba. Is he the favorite to win now? Hard to say. There’s still lots of weeks of dancing left, and there are a bunch of formidable contenders, like DeMarcus Ware, Tinashe and Milo Manheim. Plus, getting the first perfect score of the season isn’t a ticket to the Mirrorball trophy.
In the last 26 seasons, only 11 couples who earned the first perfect score of the season — a 30 or a 40, depending on the judging panel — went on to win the whole show. Five of them ended up in second place, and there were a few shocking eliminations in there, specifically Sabrina Bryan, who nabbed the first 30 twice, in Season 5 and the all-stars outing, only to be eliminated early — and five years to the day exactly.

For the second time in three weeks, DeMarcus Ware and Lindsay Arnold closed out the show on Monday’s “Dancing with the Stars” — and this one was a doozy. The pair delivered a dazzling Argentine tango, and after the judges awarded the first perfect 30 to Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke earlier in the night, it seemed like maybe a second 30 was incoming. But nope, they scored a 28. So what gives?
First of all, not to sound like a broken record, but we shouldn’t be seeing perfect scores in Week 3. It’s way too early, you don’t give room for improvement, and no one is “perfect” that early. Not even Kristi Yamaguchi, who was the first person to get a 27 in Week 1 in Season 6, got a perfect 30 until Week 6, which is usually when the 30s are given. Mirai Nagasu isn’t the only one who considers Meryl Davis the queen. The ice dancer is our readers’ favorite Olympian who’s taken home the Mirrorball trophy, receiving 23 percent of the vote in a recent poll.
Davis, who dominated Season 18, is one of six Olympians who have won “Dancing.” Adam Rippon became No. 6 after Monday’s “Athletes” finale, joining Olympic champs Davis, Apolo Anton Ohno, Kristi Yamaguchi, Shawn Johnson and Laurie Hernandez.
Rippon was just behind Davis, with 20 percent. The Olympic bronze medalist is the first male figure skater and third overall to win. Previously, 2010 Olympic champ Evan Lysaeck placed second on Season 10 and Davis’ ice dancing partner Charlie White was fifth on Season 18.

With his victory Monday night, Adam Rippon has joined an elite group of “Dancing with the Stars” champions: He is the sixth Olympian to take home the Mirrorball trophy. The Olympic bronze medalist follows Apolo Anton Ohno (Season 4), Kristi Yamaguchi (Season 6), Shawn Johnson (Season 8), Meryl Davis (Season 18) and Laurie Hernandez (Season 23).
The first five are all Olympic gold medalists, with three of them — Ohno, Yamaguchi and Davis — Winter Olympians like Rippon, and the other two, Johnson and Hernandez, Summer Olympians. Davis is a close friend of Rippon’s who mentored him and fellow figure skater Mirai Nagasu this season.
Rippon made his first — and last — Olympic team on his third attempt this year, winning a bronze in the figure skating team event with Nagasu. At 28, he was the oldest singles skater to make his Olympic debut in 82 years.

“Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” only lasted four weeks, but figure skater Adam Rippon won it in decisive fashion. He became the Mirror Ball Trophy champion on Monday night, May 21 after topping the judges’ leaderboard every single week. In fact, he was the front-runner before he ever set foot in the ballroom. We tipped him to win as soon as the cast was announced in April. But is he the best athlete ever to win “DWTS”? Click through our gallery above of all 26 winners. Then scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
To date 11 sports stars have won “DWTS.” Rippon is the third figure skater, following Olympic gold medalists Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6) and Meryl Davis (season 18). But one sport has accounted for even more Mirror Ball titles. Football has produced four victors: Emmitt Smith (season 3), Hines Ward (season 12), Donald Driver (season 14) and Rashad Jennings...

If it feels like “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” just started, that’s because it kind of did. Season 26 of “DWTS” came to an end on Monday night after a lightning-fast four weeks of competition that reduced 10 contestants to three finalists: football player Josh Norman and figure skaters Adam Rippon and Tonya Harding. The Mirror Ball Trophy champion was crowned at the end of the night. So who took home the title? Scroll down for our minute-by-minute live blog for all of the night’s developments.
We expected all along that Rippon would make the finals. He was the Mirror Ball front-runner from the moment the cast was announced in April. That was due in part to his success at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, where he won the bronze medal in the figure skating team event. But his lively interviews off the ice won him as many...

Does Adam Rippon have the Mirrorball trophy all sewn up on “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes”? In all likelihood, yes, but you can’t count out Josh Norman and Tonya Harding, who could make the battle for No. 2 and maybe even No. 1 interesting. Football players have a great track record, and who thought Harding would even make the final a month ago?
The final three will face off Monday with two routines: one unlearned dance and their highly anticipated freestyles. But before they do, let’s size them up.
See Could Tonya Harding make the ‘Dancing with the Stars: Athletes’ final two — and win! — based on these telling stats?
Tonya Harding
For her: natural dance ability, redemption narrative, performance factor. The redemption story can only take you so far; you still have to have the goods. But more impressive than Harding’s skills is her capability to really sell a routine.

The Mirror Ball Trophy will be handed out on May 21 on “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes,” ending this special four-week event, and we’re pretty sure we know who will win. Adam Rippon has been the front-runner since before the season even began, and after topping the judges’ leaderboard for three weeks in a row that hasn’t changed. He gets leading odds of 2/5 as of this writing, but our users are less sure of who will place second.
Rippon has had a significant advantage — as do all figure skaters — in that his athletic career prepared him for the choreography, musicality, and artistry of ballroom dancing. In the season premiere he tied football player Josh Norman for the highest judges’ score. Then in week two he tied his Olympic figure skating teammate Mirai Nagasu for the top spot. And in the week-three semifinals he had the top of the leaderboard...
