It’s all come down to this. Ninety-four years of Oscar history have been digested and cross-examined to help yield the critical answer: Which films and performances will win Academy Awards on March 27?
By the sheer scope of its nomination tally, Netflix is the closest it’s ever been to taking home the statuette for the Academy’s most prestigious prize. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has won the most critics’ awards for best picture, and the film has walked away with the top honor at the BAFTA and DGA ceremonies, which have Oscar-voter crossover. However, in what feels like an even divide, some Academy members told Variety they were ranking it at No. 1 on their preferential ballot, while others were putting it toward the bottom of that category.

2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards: ‘The Lost Daughter’ Takes the Top Prize (Complete Winners List)
The 37th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out Sunday at the Santa Monica Pier, with comedy power couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally serving as hosts.
There weren’t too many surprises throughout the night. Troy Kotsur won the first award of the evening, Best Supporting Male Actor for “Coda,” very much as predicted. Taylour Paige took home Best Female Lead Actor, for “Zola,” while Simon Rex, of “Red Rocket,” walked away with Best Male Lead. Ruth Negga won Best Supporting Female Actor for “Passing,” beating out Jessie Buckley from “The Lost Daughter.”
But Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante book won the three other categories in which it was nominated — Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Feature — and was the night’s biggest victor. Gyllenhaal gave three effusive thank you speeches, spreading her appreciation around to her cast, crew, financiers, publicist, husband and mother. “Women in film!

As with his past features Beginners and 20th Century Women, writer-director Mike Mills focused his latest effort, C’mon C’mon, on family—this time honing in not on his relationship with his father or mother, but instead on that between an adult and a child.
“The story, the heart of it came from me having a kid, and living with my kid, and experiencing the world with them,” Mills said Sunday during Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles even, “and having someone need you so fully. It’s so intimate, being a parent.”
In the A24 pic, Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny, a radio journalist whose latest project has him interviewing children across the U.S. about the state of affairs in the world. Johnny forges a tenuous but transformational relationship with his 8-year-old nephew Jesse (Woody Norman)—the son of his sister Viv (Gaby Hoffmann)—when he winds up...

A24 released a trailer for “C’mon C’mon,” which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and will open in theaters later this year.
Helmed by Mike Mills, the Oscar-winning director behind “20th Century Women,” the films stars Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny, a middle-aged radio journalist who, when left to take care of his nephew (Woody Norman), embarks on a trip across the country to interview kids, asking them what they think about their lives and where the world is headed.
Rounding out the cast are Gaby Hoffmann as Johnny’s sister Viv, Scoot McNairy as Viv’s high-maintenance ex-husband Paul, Molly Webster as Roxanne and Jaboukie Young-White as Fernando.
In his review, Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge called the film “a small, soft-spoken yet casually profound family drama,” while film awards editor Clayton Davis wrote in his column, “Mills’ film is not going to appeal to everyone, but I...

The Disney catalog joined Universal’s this weekend in playing whatever theaters were open at the box office as the majority of exhibition’s 5,9K theaters remain shuttered nationwide due to Covid-19.
Overall, ticket sales continued to be distressed. Disney’s 2016 Oscar-winning hit Zootopia took the top spot with an estimated $280K, putting its liftime total at $341.5M, while the studio’s Marvel Joss Whedon directed 2012 blockbuster The Avengers filed second with an estimated $260K and a running lifetime gross of $623.5M. Both pics’ takes were off from the $517K and $516K respectively made by Universal’s respective re-releases of Jurassic Park and Jaws last weekend. While Disney has had Onward in release since mid-March during the Covid-19 period, this is the first weekend we’ve seen their catalog titles, including 20th Century’s The Greatest Showman hitting marquees.

In what has been one hell of an election year, Jon Stewart is cutting through all of it with his biting political comedy Irresistible starring Steve Carell, Rose Byrne and Chris Cooper. The Focus Features film was originally set to hit theaters on May 29, but like all films impacted by the pandemic, it pivoted to PVOD and drops today.
Written by Stewart, Irresistible follows a Democrat political consultant (Carell) who helps a retired Marine colonel (Cooper) run for mayor against a Republican rival (Byrne) in a small Wisconsin town. This marks a reunion of sorts for Stewart and Carell, who was a recurring correspondent on The Daily Show between 1999 and 2005. The film is also Stewart’s latest outing as a feature film director. His first pic, Rosewater, was released in 2014 and told the story of Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari who was accused and brutally interrogated by Iranian forces for being a spy.

A24 is nearing a deal on a new project that would pair director Mike Mills with Joaquin Phoenix. (Via Deadline.) The project would be Phoenix’s first role following his celebrated performance in the forthcoming Todd Phillips-directed “Joker.” The movie will be written and directed by Mills, best known for his films “20th Century Women” and “Beginners.” Production is set to begin this fall. The project is a boon for A24, especially as Phoenix heads into this year’s awards season with a much-hyped performance.
Reception to “Joker” has been mostly ecstatic, with critics praising Phoenix’s performance as the notorious Batman foil as one of the actor’s best. Amazon Studios will release the political thriller “The Report” in movie theaters on Sept. 27, the studio announced on Thursday. The studio will then drop the film on Amazon Prime Video on Oct. 11.
The film, which stars Adam Driver, Annette Bening and Jon Hamm, takes place in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, as CIA agents begin using extreme interrogation tactics on people they think were behind it. The film follows one man’s pursuit of justice and adherence to oversight and accountability and chronicles not only the CIA’s secret torture program but also the struggle to release the report that tested the nation’s separation of powers and the rule of law.
Amazon snapped up the indie for $14 million following its premiere at January’s Sundance Film Festival.

Platform theatrical launch set for September 27; Amazon Prime Video launch to follow on October 11.
Amazon Studios has set a September 27 platform release date for the Sundance acquisition and political drama The Report starring Adam Driver, kicking off what the streamer hopes will be a major awards campaign.
The film cost the company approximately $14m when it snapped up worldwide rights in January and takes it place among a stable of awards season hopefuls believed to include Jean Seberg drama Against All Enemies starring Kristen Stewart, recent Cannes acquisitions Les Misérables, and possibly the adventure The Aeronauts, which reunites Eddie Redmayne...

As Amazon Studios Head Jennifer Salke promised at TCA, some of the company’s titles will be released ala Netflix’s Roma in a truncated theatrical-streaming combination. We’ll see this on Sept. 27 as Amazon’s $14M Sundance acquisition The Report hits theaters on that date followed by an Amazon Prime Video launch two weeks later on Oct. 11.
Amazon will give the Scott Z. Burns written-directed movie an awards season push. Note, this is the new future and completely permitted by Academy Awards rules (and always were in recent years), these types of theatrical-streaming releases. In fact, going way back, IFC’s Armando Ianucci movie In the Loop was a truncated theatrical-streaming release and nabbed an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay.

After another all-night negotiation, Amazon Studios has acquired the worldwide rights for the fact-based political thriller “The Report” for around $14 million, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The Vice Studios and Unbranded production, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, was written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Scott Burns and stars Adam Driver, Annette Bening and Jon Hamm.
“The Report,” following one man’s pursuit of justice and adherence to oversight and accountability, chronicles not only the CIA’s secret torture program, but also the remarkable struggle to release the report that tested the nation’s separation of powers and the rule of law.
Amazon is targeting a fall theatrical release later this year during the awards corridor.

Moments ago, the Film Independent Spirit Awards announced their nominations for 2018. Essentially the Oscars of indie film, this is a time when certain movies can see their only true moment in the sun. As you’ll see below, the nominees this year represent both some major Academy Award players as well as some tiny titles that will go no further. That’s actually part of the real appeal of the Spirits, in that they place these flicks side by side. This seems like one of those years where the Spirit Award winners won’t cross over too much with Oscar, but that remains to be seen. First up, we can just go over the nominees. The Spirit Awards, nomination wise, were led this year by, in a surprise…We the Animals. Scoring five nominations, that led the field, with Eighth Grade, First Reformed, and You Were Never Really Here next in line with four.

We now have another piece of the puzzle folks. Just a few moments ago, the Directors Guild of America revealed their nominees. DGA doesn’t always match up with the Academy Awards lineup of Best Director, but it’s safe to assume that at least three or four of the honored individuals today will hear their names on Oscar nomination morning. DGA thankfully included plenty of diversity in their lineup this year, which also bode well for what AMPAS might do. Time will tell, but even a small step in the right direction is still very much a step in the right direction. DGA actually went with my currently predicted Oscar five. That would be Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird, Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Christopher Nolan for Dunkirk, and Jordan Peel for Get Out. Not surprisingly, Peele was...

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominees for the 70th Annual DGA Awards in the feature film categories, including both feature film and first-film feature film. Heavy hitters like Guillermo del Toro (his first DGA nod) and Christopher Nolan (his fourth) made the cut, along with awards season favorites like Greta Gerwig for her “Lady Bird” and Jordan Peele for his “Get Out,” who pulled in nominations in both categories. Other first-timers of note include Aaron Sorkin and Taylor Sheridan, who both made the jump to directing with their newest features, along with “Lady Macbeth” helmer William Oldroyd and “Patti Cake$” director Geremy Jasper.
Notable missing names include Steven Spielberg for his “The Post,” Denis Villeneuve for his “Blade Runner 2049,” and Ridley Scott for his “All the Money in the World,” all of whom have received best director nods during the season from various guilds and voting bodies.

“The Meyerowitz Stories” has been singled out in the Cannes Film Festival lineup ever since the first announcement that it would compete for the Palme d’Or. Cannes festival president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Frémaux announced the lineup in April, but then noted that they had forgotten to mention one title: Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories.”

Netflix had acquired the worldwide rights to the film just days before the Cannes announcement, which made “Meyerowitz” a controversial title, as France treasures the theatrical experience. Cannes even had to address the issue on Wednesday, denying reports that it was considering dropping the film and announcing new rules that, starting next year, will require competition films to show in French theaters. Cannes also underscored that another Netflix title, Bong Joon-ho’s “Okja,” was not being dropped from the lineup either.

So much is happening in our terrible, awful, horrible world that it can be easy to forget about the Cannes Film Festival kicking off in just one week. But what a festival it shall be! Likely so good, in fact, that it’s just as easy to overlook the presence of a new Todd Haynes picture — for a short while longer. Our first look at his Carol follow-up, Wonderstruck, arrived today in the form of three stills showcasing stars Julianne Moore, Millicent Simmonds, Oakes Fegley, and Jaden Michael. Much? No. A source of excitement? We need not even explain.
His adaptation of the novel by Hugo author Brian Selznick follows a story that oscillates between two deaf children: a boy, Ben (Fegley), in Minnesota circa 1977 who’s dealing with the death of his mother (Michelle Williams); and a girl, Rose (Simmonds), in New Jersey circa 1927 who ventures to New York to meet her idol,...

Potential awards contender produced by Scott Rudin will get day-and-date theatrical release and worldwide streaming launch in late 2017.
Netflix has pulled off the kind of prestige buy more commonly associated with its streaming rival Amazon Studios, swooping on worldwide rights to Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).
Frequent Netflix collaborator Adam Sandler stars alongside Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Marvel of Homeland and House Of Cards, Grace Van Patten and Emma Thompson.
The plot centres on adult siblings dealing with the influence of their aging father. A producer roster of Scott Rudin, Baumbach, Lila Yacoub and Eli Bush further bolsters the film’s prestige credentials and a day-and-date theatrical and worldwide streaming launch has been earmarked for late 2017.

Opening in select theaters on August 14, here’s a look at the second trailer for director Noah Baumbach’s Mistress America.
In Mistress America, Tracy (Lola Kirke) is a lonely college freshman in New York, having neither the exciting university experience nor the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she envisioned. But when she is taken in by her soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke (Greta Gerwig) – a resident of Times Square and adventurous gal about town – she is rescued from her disappointment and seduced by Brooke’s alluringly mad schemes.
Mistress America is directed by Noah Baumbach from a script written by Baumbach and Greta Gerwig.
Gerwig says, “I’m a fan of the kind of ’80s movies in which some amazing girl drags “the square” into a crazy underground. They go on a big adventure and all this happenstance tumbles in. We wanted that feeling. I love the energy of those movies and I...

It landed at the Toronto Int. Film Festival and already had a Nyff playdate in place before A24 films plunked down 4 million on the title. Where does Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young figure in indie distribs’ short or long term plans? Starring Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried, and Charles Grodin, our Jordan M. Smith called the dramedy a “running social portraiture has never been as broadly conventional in his humor,” this doesn’t have a long shelf life and looks like a Spring ’15 item. Conceivably this could go the Locke route, with a Tiff in September showing, followed by a Spotlight section at Sundance in January plan. And if by some film god miracle Baumbach’s other untitled film makes its world premiere, then it would be a fitting double dose from the filmmaker who has only made one appearance at the fest with Directing...

Akin to Michel Gondry’s low-budgeter We and I, the shot in 2013 campus comedy still doesn’t have a name, doesn’t have a release date, in fact, the project which is described “looser and wonkier” Frances Ha was leaped-frogged by While We’re Young. Mum on details, we’re guessing that this might be Noah Baumbach’s least commercial, more experimental and offbeat offering to date. Sundance is the best time to let the genie out of the bottle.
