Rian Johnson is a man who knows what genres he wants to work in and sticks with them. Barring his second movie, the con caper "The Brothers Bloom," all of his feature films have been mysteries or science-fiction.
"Looper" is a bit of a combination of his favorite genres. On the sci-fi end, the movie is centered around time travel and there are other genre hallmarks like hover-bikes and telekinetic superpowers. While its story doesn't involve a murder mystery, the future of "Looper" does have some film noir flavor. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) lives in a grungy metropolis and is a hitman, killing mob targets from the future sent back in time. Like any criminal protagonist, Joe is looking to get out of the game, but first he has to do one last job: killing his future self (Bruce Willis). "Old Joe" did manage to find a normal life, but his past caught up to him.

"These guys don't play nice." Get locked and loaded. Saban Films debuted another new official trailer for the adrenaline-fueled action indie movie 24 Hours to Live, yet another assassin story if you're up for another one. Ethan Hawke stars as a career assassin who is given a chance at redemption after his employer brings him back to life temporarily after being killed on the job. This trailer is a bit more action heavy again, making this seem like some Taken meets Bourne meets Shoot 'Em Up meets Crank movie. The rest of the main cast includes Xu Qing, Liam Cunningham, Rutger Hauer, and Paul Anderson. This is worth a watch just to see what it's about, but damn it seems like a weird film with angry Hawke. Have fun. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Brian Smrz's 24 Hours to Live, direct from Vimeo: You can still watch the first...

"I'm going to come at you with everything I've got!" Saban Films has unveiled an official trailer for an action film titled 24 Hours to Live, yet another assassin movie if you're up for another one of these. Ethan Hawke stars as a career assassin who is given a chance at redemption after his employer brings him back to life temporarily after being killed on the job. Sounds a bit like the plot to Crank, but this doesn't look similar at all. The rest of the cast includes Xu Qing, Liam Cunningham, Rutger Hauer, and Paul Anderson. I'm seriously surprised that Ethan Hawke is in a film like this, but I guess he needs some extra work to keep things going. The clock on the arm isn't an original idea, but it is kind of cool. Fire it up below. Here's the first official trailer for Brian Smrz's 24 Hours to Live,...

Shanghai, April 30 (Reuters) - When superhero film "Iron Man 3" makes its Chinese debut, it will include top Chinese actress Fan Bingbing and some footage shot inside China - additions aimed at tapping into the country's lucrative and booming cinema market.
Co-producer Dmg Entertainment, a Chinese firm, and the Walt Disney-owned Marvel Studios also hope the changes will help ease the film's way past China's strict censors and the draconian, and often confusing, rules for Western films.
"There is no law of film in China, and so no specific standard. The members on the committee censor films totally by their own judgment," said Zhu Dake, an outspoken Chinese film critic based in Shanghai.
Every movie in China is censored by the Film Censorship Committee, made up of 37 members including officials, academics, film magazine editors and directors. They vet nudity, violence and politically sensitive scenes.

Rian Johnson has written and directed three films, each a carefully a constructed cinematic puzzle and each an exploration of a specific and completely different film genre: Brick (film noir), The Brothers Bloom (grifters), and Looper (time travel/science fiction). What is startling about Rian Johnson’s films – other than their impressive overall quality – is how similar the films are to one another despite coming from completely different genres, and, even more striking, how similar the protagonists are to each other.

Rian Johnson's time travelling actioner Looper has been tearing up critics' charts and box offices from Boston to Beijing since its release last week. While Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis are winning plenty of much-due praise, the whole cast deserves a nod for an outstanding job. Twitch had a chance to chat with one of the film's lesser known stars, at least on this side of the Pacific, Chinese actress Summer Qing. Best known in China for her roles in Chen Kaige's Life on a String, Lin Zifeng's Kuang (Crazy), and the popular TV show "Close to Forbidden City," Qing has been relatively unknown in Hollywood. Turns out she'd like to change that. Twitch: What did you first think when you read the script for Looper?...

Thriller lauded as first film to take more on debut in China than the Us. In fact, analysts mixed up dollars and yuan
It was supposed to be the moment the Chinese box office raised its head above the parapet and began its climb towards replacing the Us as the world's largest cinemagoing audience. In reality, it appears to have been a basic accounting mistake: the Rian Johnson science fiction film Looper did not, after all, post a higher figure in China than in north America when it debuted in multiplexes at the weekend.
Film industry blog Deadline's original report had suggested Looper took $23-$25m in China, a figure which compared favourably with the Us bow of $20.8m (£12.9m), leading many media outlets, including the Guardian, to suggest that a key power-shift had occurred in the global film business. Analysts reasoned that Johnson's tale of time-travelling hitmen, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt,...

I had the privilege of speaking to Summer Qing and asking her a few questions about her Hollywood debut after breaking onto the Hollywood scene last month with her role playing the wife of old Joe (Bruce Willis) in Rian Johnson’s sci-fi thriller, Looper. Already an acclaimed actress in her native China, she likely played an integral role in catapulting Looper to success in China, where it was the first film ever to have a higher grossing release in China than in the Us. No doubt, we will be seeing more from this talented actress.

Science fiction thriller's release is first time in history that China is world's leading market for an international film
The critically acclaimed science fiction thriller Looper looks set to be the first blockbuster to boast a bigger opening weekend figure in China than for its Us debut.
Rian Johnson's tale of time-travelling hitmen, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, is a Us-Chinese co-production, giving it a huge leg-up in the world's most populous nation. China's cinemagoing audience is increasing dramatically each year as the country builds thousands of new multiplexes, but the number of foreign productions allowed to screen remains limited. Hence, when a Hollywood film is given permission to be shown in cinemas, it benefits from a marked lack of competition.
Nevertheless, Looper's feat at the weekend looks to be impressive. The film, which was shot for just $30m, made an estimated $21m on debut in the Us,...

Though her time on screen in Looper might be limited, there's no denying the significance of Summer Qing's role in Rian Johnson's film, as it's her connection to the older Bruce Willis version of the protagonist that keeps the film from taking the very quick, and easy way to the end. In celebration of the film's opening weekend, Summer Qing has released a few behind-the-scenes photographs from her own collection while on the set. They're all rather casual photos (her prepping in costumes, posing with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, etc.), but fun all the same. Check them all out below.

Exclusive: I’ve learned that the Sony/TriStar Pictures, FilmDistrict, and Endgame Entertainment futuristic actioner Looper which was a co-production with China’s Dmg Entertainment is setting records in that country. The Rian Johnson film pulled off a huge upset in China by opening #1 its first weekend with between $23M-$25M grosses. That’s on track to beat the U.S. opening. “If that happens, it would be the first time that China’s open outgrosses that of a U.S. open,” a source tells me. Endgame’s James Stern is cagey confirming this because there will be nothing official until Tuesday. He tells me: “While we don’t have the final box office tally’s because of the Chinese National Holiday, it looks as if we are #1 in that market and at least on par if not exceeding the U.S. box office, marking the very first time in...

Title: Looper Directed By: Rian Johnson Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo, Jeff Daniels, Pierce Gagnon, Qing Xu, Garret Dillahunt Yes, a good portion of the fun of a sci-fi movie is getting to go off to different worlds, see cool gadgets and experience the impossible, but there’s just so many times we can watch people fly, cars hover and characters time travel before the surreal loses appeal. However, toss a little authenticity, heart and sheer terror into the mix, and all of those genre basics get a new life courtesy of a wholly believable and enthralling story, just like in “Looper.” The [ Read More ]...

The new International poster for Looper proves that Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are not the only two people in the movie.
The earlier posters for Looper are awesome in how they blend and combine Willis and Gordon-Levitt, and the imagery is fitting since the two play two versions of the same person, but I love this poster, too. In addition to the main guys, we also get to see Emily Blunt and Qing Xu supporting the young and old hitmen as they face off through the decades with some pretty impressive weapons. I think the present-day and futuristic cityscapes are a nice touch, too.
There’s also a new banner which lets us see the two duos from a different perspective.
Looper arrives in theaters on September 28, 2012.
In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market.

Can’t wait for Looper to arrive in theatres next week? You definitely aren’t the only one. Fortunately, thanks to GeekTyrant, we have a batch of 11 new stills from the film to hold us over – for now, at least.
Directed and written by Rian Johnson, Looper is a sci-fi thriller that stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joe, a hitman who targets assassins sent from 30 years in the future. Life is pretty good for Joe, until he recognizes his next target as his future self (played by Bruce Willis).
We see a lot of Old Joe (Willis) in these stills – Old Joe with guns, Old Joe in conversation with his younger self, and Old Joe cozying up with a woman (Summer Qing).
We also catch some glimpses of Gordon-Levitt (who seems to bear an uncanny resemblance to Willis, thanks to the makeup department), Emily Blunt looking pretty badass as Sara, and...

Sony Pictures has released, via Yahoo! Movies, the first clip from Rian Johnson’s sci-fi flick Looper, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Xu Qing and Jeff Daniels; and revolves around loopers who use time-travel to cover the tracks of their murders.
Looper is released in cinemas on September 28th.
In the year 2042 time travel has not yet been invented. But in 30 years it will have been. In Rian Johnson’s highly anticipated sci-fi action thriller, Joe works as a looper, a futuristic assassin who receives and eliminates targets sent back in time by a criminal organisation. The only rule is that you do not let your target escape – even if that target is you. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

It’s only been two days since some new shots from Looper made their way across the internet, though this latest batch stands out a bit more. While you don’t get to see the ending or learn what was in the briefcase this whole time, what’s here not only lends a greater view of its terrific main trio, but also shows off Emily Blunt more than anything else thus far. (Unless the two newest trailers — which I’m not watching, anyway — give her more backstory. I’ll never know!)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s makeup is, with the above shot being an exception, something I still can’t fully adjust to, yet I’ve also grown more and more fascinated with this stylistic choice every time I take it in. (Dialogue will be the tipping point, I think.) I know the rest is probably familiar enough by this point, save for co-star Qing Xu,...

With the novelty of Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing the same character now worn off after the unveiling of the first "Looper" trailer, all eyes turn to the film itself and its upcoming release. Marketing has been a bit of a mixed bag so far, and the latest peeks don't change that assessment, with an interesting new look at supporting players Jeff Daniels and character actor Noah Segen paired with a disappointingly nondescript poster from across the Atlantic.
While their roles are unknown, we have a sneaking suspicion Daniels may be a villain in the piece, especially after his sly quote in the trailer noting that "this time travel crap fries your brain like an egg." It doesn't exactly look like he's consoling an injured Segen here either.

A time-traveling actioner that pits Joseph Gordon-Levitt against his older self, played by Bruce Willis? We don't need to know much more to be sold on the idea, but add to that the fact it's the third directorial effort by writer-director Rian Johnson and features a supprting cast that includes Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels and Paul Dano -- color us excited as hell.
We've already seen trailers and posters from the film and we have a feeling of what's in store, but we now also have a better look at co-star Blunt, in a reportedly ass-kicking role, as well as more photos of a prosthetics-heavy Gordon-Levitt. The story follows Gordon-Levitt's lead, a hitman sent his targets from the future by the mob, who realises one of the men sent to him is his future-self. We're sure there'll be plenty of twists and turns along the way as well with Piper Perabo,...

Sony Pictures have released the first poster for writer/director Rian Johnson’s new science-fiction thriller Looper which stars the aforementioned Levitt and Willis alongside Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Xu Qing and Jeff Daniels in a story which revolves around hitmen (“loopers”) who use time-travel to cover the tracks of their murders.
In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. Writer/director Rian Johnson has given this first look at the time machine in his upcoming sci-fi pic Looper on the film's Tumblr account , where you'll find more behind-the-scenes photos. In the September 28 release, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a contract killer who works for the mob of the future, and who kills victims that are then sent back in time 30 years so there's no trace of the crime. One day, however, he recognizes one of his targets (Bruce Willis) as a future version of himself. Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Xu Qing, Noah Segan, Jeff Daniels and Piper Perabo co-star.

Legendary Entertainment's Chinese partnership bypasses limit on number of foreign films released, and their box office takings
The Hollywood producer behind the Hangover movies and Inception has joined forces with a Chinese studio to create a $220.5m (£134m) venture aimed at China's increasingly lucrative film market.
The partnership between Legendary Entertainment and Huayi Brothers Media Corp plans to make one or two "major, event-style films" a year for worldwide audiences starting in 2013.
The two companies said they were selling a 50% stake in the venture, Legendary East, to Hong Kong construction company Paul Y Engineering.
The deal allows Legendary Entertainment to bypass Chinese import restrictions that limit the number of foreign movies released in China to about 20 a year and restrict box office takings for foreign firms.
Hollywood is increasingly targeting the Chinese market, which is adding 1,400 screens a year. Chinese box office takings rose 64% to $1.5bn (£910m) in 2010, a fraction of the Us's $10.6bn receipts,...

As we've said in several pieces in the past, Rian Johnson's third film Looper (which follows Brick and The Brothers Bloom) is one of our most anticipated pictures in the next year or so. FilmDistrict and Tri-Star are releasing [1] the film, and we'd hoped to see it sometime early next year. Sadly, we're going to have to wait a bit longer than that. Tri-Star has set a date for the film: September 28, 2012. That's a long time to wait, but it's kinda par for the course -- The Brothers Bloom had, shall we say, an extended release calendar as well. But Looper seems like it should be worth waiting for. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Piper Perabo, Garrett Dillahunt, Paul Dano, and Xu Qing star in the film, which was shot primarily in Lousiana and China. Without giving too much away, here’s the basic recap: Looper is a...

Check Out Bruce Willis In Looper
Rian Johnson's Looper is gaining some positive buzz. For me personally, I'm most interested in it for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and for the film's plot, which revolves around "a hitman whose victims are sent back in time from 30 years in the future. He knocks them off and, meanwhile, back in the future, there’s no trace of the crime. But then his future self, played by Willis, shows up, and things get difficult." Emily Blunt, Piper Perabo, Garrett Dillahunt, Paul Dano , and Xu Qing co-star and Johnson's third film is looking pretty good from where I'm standing. Johnson is most well known for Brick, which also starred Gordon-Levitt. It was a great film and really showcased Johnson's talents as a director.

We've been pretty vocal about our interest in Rian Johnson, whose debut film Brick is (I think) a tremendously entertaining modern noir, and who crafted an engaging and clever caper film in The Brothers Bloom. So Looper, his third film and one which involves time travel (and the talents of Primer director Shane Carruth!) is something we're quite keen to see. Here's your first look at any real stills from the film. It shows Bruce Willis, who plays the older version of a young hitman played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Confused? Don't be -- I'll explain after the break. (And so possible spoilers are ahead, but they're not likely any different than you'll get in the eventual trailer.) Empire [1] has this shot (see a bigger version there), which, obviously, shows Bruce Willis getting into action with a machine gun. It doesn't tell us nearly as much as I'd like to know...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in Shanghai promoting his role in Rian Johnson's Looper. Gordon-Levitt was last in Japan for Christopher Nolan's Inception, and now has returned to Asia for the China-set action-thriller. Looper also co-stars Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt and Chinese actress Xu Qing.
Here is what Gordon-Levitt said in a statement, "I feel now, doing 'Looper,' is the result of what happened with 'Inception.' It is something I have been working for my whole life."
Xu said Sunday that "It is like nothing I have seen before. It has action. It has romance. It also deals with philosophy. I really like it."
I am a big fan of Johnson's Brick and The Brother's Bloom and am very excited to see him take on the sci-fi genre. Aside from Gordon-Levitt, the supporting cast of Blunt and Willis is solid. What are your thoughts on this news?...

Rian Johnson‘s third film, Looper, is reuniting him with his Brick star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Taking a different direction than that film or his sophomore effort, The Brothers Bloom, this will be a sci-fi, time travel story that is said to be much darker than either of his previous movies.
Gordon-Levitt was quoted by The Canadian Press (via TheDailyBlam) as saying some very kind things towards the movie. He stated that doing the film “is the result of what happened with Inception” and that it’s “something I have been working for my whole life.” Additionally, Chinese actress Xu Qing, who’s appearing in the movie, said “It is like nothing I have seen before.
