Fifteen years ago the prospect of Don Coscarelli following up Phantasm Oblivion with a smart funny movie about two old timers battling a mummy in a retirement home seemed about as likely as well Stuart Gordon adapting David Mamet but not only was Bubba Ho Tep unlike anything Coscarelli had previously made it was also his best effort to date. A decade later with only a Masters of Horror episode to his name in the interim hes back with this adaptation of the novel by David Wong (aka Cracked.com editor Jason Pargin) prompting viewers to wonder if Bubba was a fluke to which the answer is no sir.

One heck of a fun read for me was that of David Wong's excellent yet bizarre horror comedy novel 'John Dies at the End'. When news that 'Bubba Ho-Tep' helmer Don Coscarelli was set to write and direct the adaption I for one nearly peed my pants. Finally it lands on VOD in the Us from 27 December courtesy of Magnet Releasing well ahead of its intended limited 3 February 2013 theatrical run and a fresh new and equally eye-pleasing piece of poster art has landed. Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Clancy Brown, Doug Jones ('Hellboy'), Glynn Turman, Daniel Roebuck and Paul Giamatti all star. Head below for the new one-sheet....

David Wong can see things that other people can't. Strange things. Frightening things. Sometimes dead things and creatures from other dimensions. So can his friend John, with whom he has set up something of a cottage business eliminating supernatural pests. It's because they're on drugs or, specifically, drug. A strange, seemingly sentient drug of indeterminate origin known simply as Soy Sauce, one consequence of whose use is to lead Dave and John to conclude - correctly - that the earth is on the cusp of an inter-dimensional invasion which may or may not be partially their fault but which is certainly their responsibility to stop.Originally achieving notoriety as a serialized online novel by David Wong, a pseudonym of Cracked.com editor Jason Pargin, a cult phenomenon...

The latest from Don Coscarelli looks great.
This looks weird. This looks fun. And, given the talent involved and the source material (“David Wong”‘s novel is truly, deeply mad), it’s guaranteed to be both.
If you ask me, that’s a trailer filled with greatness: practical monster puppets, inter-dimensional quantum existentialism, druggy weirdness, Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown (!), Doug Jones (!!). The official synopsis has a bit more:
It’s a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.

Bubba Ho-tep director Don Coscarelli’s adaptation of David Wong’s book John Dies At The End already had Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown on board, with newcomers Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes as the leads (see previous item here). Today, several new cast additions have been announced; one is a Guillermo del Toro regular, and another is one of Coscarelli’s closest collaborators.

During B-d's visit to the set of Don Coscarelli's latest movie, an adaptation of cult favorite novel John Dies At The End written by David Wong (nee Jason Pargin), we caught up with the beloved creator of the Phantasm series to find out what's happening with both the long-awaited fifth entry in that franchise as well as the long-rumored Bubba Ho-Tep sequel, Bubba Nosferatu. Hear what he had to say about the possibility that they'll forward, as well as whether we might one day soon see those deadly silver spheres flying at us in 3-D! First things first - will we be seeing a Phantasm 5 sometime in the near future? Coscarelli, while not giving a definitive answer, at least gave fans reason to hope.

After speculation that Don Coscarelli’s new movie was going to be a new Phantasm (either a reboot or a sequel) or another Bubba Ho-tep installment, it turns out he set his sights in another direction. Word broke that the book John Dies at the End is already in production with Mr. Coscarelli at the helm.
But wait, there’s more. Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown both have roles it in. The two leads are played by newcomers Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes. The story itself is about two slackers who’s only skill-set is hunting down the weird and supernatural.
The book, written by David Wong (Aka Jason Pargin) has made quite a rumbling amongst the fiction crowd since it came out. It is a blend of horror and cynical comedy. Amazon has the first portion of the book to read if you want a little taste.

Don Coscarelli, of “Phantasm” fame, has been dropping mysterious little hints and clues about the film that he is currently shooting. He hasn’t directed a movie since the Bruce-Campbell-Mummy-jfk-Elvis shenanigans of “Bubba Ho-Tep” in 2005 (though he did direct an episode of “Masters of Horror”). As it turns out, Coscarelli is filming an adaptation of David Wong’s novel, “John Dies at the End”. The book has been described like this. “It’s like Terry Gilliam wrote a Douglas Adams story in the vein of ‘Ghostbusters’.” Those are all good things. The film is about two twenty-something losers who gain extra sensory perception via a substance called Soy Sauce, a black liquid that acts like a potent drug, but seemingly has a mind of its own. They see a lot of crazy shit… mustaches ripping off of people’s faces, a monster made of cold cuts, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Apparently Don Coscarelli, the director of the Phantasm films as we'll as the cult classic Bubba Ho-Tep, has been shooting a new movie that no one knew he was shooting. He is currently in the process of secretly developing an adapatation of the book John Dies at the End from Cracked.com’s David Wong whose real name Jason Pargin. Well, it used to be secret until AICN cracked the case wide open.

‘Sup with Don Coscarelli? Oh, just secretly filming a movie. You don't know who Don Coscarelli is? Well, Don Coscarelli is the filmmaker behind the trippy Phantasm series of horror movies as well as cult classic Bubba Ho-Tep. He was supposed to be working on the Ho-Tep sequel, Bubba Nosferatu, but according to a new report from Quint on AICN, Coscarelli is actually shooting another film right now, titled John Dies at the End, based on David Wong's novel. He's apparently been "covertly filming the movie" and actually has wrangled Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown for roles in the film alongside newcomers Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes (Sorority Wars) as the actual leads. Read on! We're not exactly sure what that photo is (it just looks like a stylized welders mask) but it was posted as an early tease. Paul Giamatti is starring in a new film by Don Coscarelli and it's not Bubba Nosferatu.
No, after a couple days of being teased by Coscarelli via his teaser account word is now out that the director's new film - which has been shooting covertly for long enough now that I've actually heard that it's already totally in the can - is his adaptation of David Wong's John Dies At The End. And tagging along for the ride in supporting roles are both Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown.
John Dies At The End is the story of two twenty-something's juiced up on some sort of supernaturally powered drug that a) messes with their heads mightily and b) puts them at odds with the forces they have unleashed. The smart money says one of them is named John and that he dies at the end.

Well, let the last two solid days of speculation finally come to an end. Would the legendary Don Coscarelli's new project be Phantasm 5 or Bubba Nosferatu? Nope, it's something entirely different that's rockin' a hell of a cast thus far.
According to AICN Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown will star alongside Angus Scrimm, Chase Williamson, and Rob Mayes in an adaption of David Wong's (real name Jason Pargin) John Dies at the End, which was first announced back in February of 2008.
Dig on the plot crunch below.

This past summer Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown lent their voices to test footage of an adaptation of Eric Powell.s comic book series The Goon. Though the clip was fantastic (nothing like playing a couple of games with a tied up zombie in a bar), the project still hasn't found a studio to finance it. While we may have to wait awhile to see that project come to fruition, that's not stopping Brown and Giamatti from working together. AICN has learned that Don Coscarelli, director of Bubba Ho-Tep and the Phantasm series, has begun production on an adaptation of John Dies At The End, based on the book by Cracked.com.s David Wong, and has already cast Giamatti and Brown in the film. The Phantasm and Bubba Ho Tep director has been cryptically tweeting about a new project recently, and AICN now have the scoop that Don Coscarelli is, as we speak, directing John Dies at the End, based on the novel by David Wong.Anyone who's been following the protracted saga of Bubba Nosferatu might not be surprised to learn that Coscarelli has Paul Giamatti obeying his orders on the new film, seemingly as a framing device: a reporter hearing the story from the lead character. Clancy Brown is also on-hand as a supernatural expert, and Bd put Phantasm's Tall Man Angus Scrimm on set too, although he's not mentioned by AICN.The two leads are as-yet-unknowns Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes, playing slackers who gain psychic powers after taking a drug called Soy Sauce. Yesterday Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep director Don Coscarelli joined Twitter. And today he tweeted simply: "Pre-production begins."
The question is, pre-production begins on what? And on that issue he aint saying. There have been ongoing rumblings of a new Phantasm movie, which seems the most likely option. Bubba Nosferatu stories continue swirling around. Earlier this year I was told by someone close to the man that he planned to shoot something unrelated to either franchise and there were reports a couple years back that he had picked up rights to adapt David Wong's novel John Dies At The End, so perhaps it's that?
The only hint he's giving came moments after the pre-production tweet which he followed with a note saying "Most ride in a hearse only once. Some are luckier." Let the speculation begin.

This Tuesday, March 30th, is the long awaited DVD/Blu-ray release date of Glenn McQuaid's I Sell the Dead, and our trilogy of interviews with its cast and crew continues with the one -- the only -- Angus Scrimm, who portrays the character of Dr. Vernon Quint in the film.
Elaine Lamkin: Thank you for taking time to do this interview with me, Angus. First question – how did you find yourself playing Dr. Quint in I Sell the Dead? What was the attraction? And how would you describe the good doctor, whose exit from the film is both hilarious and well-deserved?
Angus Scrimm: In January, 2008, this ruddy-cheeked Irish fellow with a perpetual twinkle in his eye turned up at the Burbank, California, studio where Larry Fessenden was filming the infamous rant I contributed to Jim McKenney's Automatons DVD "extras." Undeterred by what he saw, he offered me the role of Dr.

Wait.....what? Where am I? Who the fuck are you? Is......is this a van with no windows? Why are my pants off? What is this powdery residue in my nostrils? What the fuck just happened?
That's how I felt after reading David Wong's John Dies at the End. All I know is that I woke up in the back of a van, with a seriously druggy hangover, my pants were around my ankles and certain parts of me were in need of medical attention. I'm not sure what went on but I'm pretty sure gp and his army of gays were involved. They also may have brought a horse, judging from how my throat hurts. I'll admit, I'm not even sure how I'm supposed to review this cluster fuck except to say that I enjoyed the hell out of it and I'm a little ashamed to say so.

Welcome to HorrorFest 2009. It's been a long strange journey so far for John Dies At The End and its author, "David Wong," and there's still plenty of journey ahead. I'm late to the party, but now that I've read the book, I'm onboard, and I am ready to recruit others this horror world equivalent to The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Jason Pargin is editor-in-chief of the very funny Cracked.com, and it should come as no surprise that he was able to write a very funny supernatural novel, using the internet to self-publish starting back in 2001. It's impressive, though, that...

David Wong isn’t his real name, but that’s not what’s important. What’s important is the soy sauce, which isn’t really soy sauce, exactly, but a kind of drug that opens up perceptions to the point where its users—David Wong, for instance—can suddenly see once and for all just how deeply screwed up nearly everything in the universe is. Like the shadow people who can only be seen by not looking at them, or the white worms that devour their victims inside, until some hapless mortal explodes from the pressure. Or the floating jellyfish ...

Back in 2007, Permuted Press released a book that flew off store shelves almost as fast as it was published; spawned an online following; had it's movie rights snagged by Phantasm's Don Coscarelli; and got picked up by a bigger publisher.
Now, David Wong's John Dies At The End is ready for it's massive reissue courtesy of St. Martin's Press, and Fango's got the full details on the book, along with a wrap-around cover that you need to see.
The story details the adventures of two Midwest slackers who find themselves fighting inter-dimensional evil, a task for which they are profoundly unqualified:
“It's a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero.
