“Copa 71,” the Serena Williams-produced documentary that aims to shed light on the 1971 controversially unsanctioned Women’s World Cup, will have its New York premiere at the 14th annual Athena Film Festival, which will return on Feb. 29 and run through March 3.
The festival, hosted by Columbia University’s Barnard College, will feature a lineup of film screenings, conversations and other programming poised at “amplifying women’s leadership through storytelling around women’s sports, Indigenous perspectives, reproductive justice, disability representation and more,” according to the statement.
The Lily Gladstone-starring “Fancy Dance,” directed by Native American Director Erica Tremblay, will make up one of the films screened in the narrative features collection. “The Persian Version,” a film about an Iranian American family brought together by illness and shocked by the revelation of a family secret, “Animalia,” which follows a woman in Morocco who finds her life upended because of a supernatural event and “Dancing Queen,...

Tom Johnson, a writer and stand-up comic with credits including “The Daily Show” and “The Jeselnik Offensive,” has died at the age of 55.
In a statement Friday, his family said he died at his home “Peacefully and unexpectedly” on Jan. 14. No cause of death has been made public.
“Growing up,” the family wrote in their statement, Johnson “had an insatiable curiosity. He was talented in all of the arts: a gifted artist who could draw in vivid detail, played the guitar and trombone, and acted in plays throughout college at the University of Missouri. He loved the band Kiss and enjoyed dressing up like the lead singer for Halloween.”

My first act toward shedding myself of fucks to give was sharing my abortion story on Comedy Central back in 1992. That was the first and last time I was asked to do that on television. That’s when I learned that corporate media, no matter how open-minded, is not a place where activism will thrive.
My career was built at the intersections of comedy and social criticism, but as I worked on shows at for-profit media networks, there was a limit. The suits were quick to remind me, “You are a comedy writer,...

Trevor Noah surprised his studio audience on Thursday when he announced that his time as host of “The Daily Show” would soon come to an end. He did not give a specific date, but the comedian indicated that seven years was a good run, and it was time to move on.
“I’ve loved hosting this show. It’s been one of my greatest challenges. It’s been one of my greatest joys. I’ve loved trying to figure out how to make people laugh even when the stories are particularly shitty on the worst days,” he said.
The 38-year-old South African comic came to the United States in 2011 and secured a gig as a special “Daily Show” correspondent in late 2014. He was announced as Jon Stewart’s successor in March 2015. During Stewart’s time, from 1999 to 2015, the late-night chat show evolved into something that really never existed on American...

Conan O’Brien’s departure from late-night linear television after 28 years is shining a spotlight on the sustainability of the nightly format outside of the broadcast networks.
O’Brien, who will end his TBS show in June 2021, is heading to HBO Max for a weekly variety show. It comes after a storied career hosting NBC’s Late Night from 1993-2009, followed by a controversially short tenure on The Tonight Show and the last 10 years spent hosting his eponymous show on the WarnerMedia-owned cable network.
Last month, Conan showrunner Jeff Ross told Deadline that he’s questioned the future of the genre and believes late-night shows are now “kind of dinosaurs in the business,” adding that linear networks are “just like death” due to lower ratings.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.

If we’ve all said Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag,” I would not be surprised. The show’s second season is incredible. And that’s not just recency bias. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is one of the smartest and funniest people working in television and film today, and the new season reflects that. Let me tell you a quick story: I was late to Season 2 because of other work commitments, and I kept thinking everyone must be overselling the new season. I thought there was no way it was as good as everyone was saying it was because 1) I am a cynical person, and 2) when does that ever actually happen? When does...

You look “Marvelous”! That’s what “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is saying to women-led companies and organizations in New York and Los Angeles as part of its latest Emmy campaign. Amazon has created 11 installations, each with an eight-foot display of block letters spelling out “Marvelous” in front of businesses and locations representative of female empowerment. Those installations went up on June 12 and will remain up for a week. That coincides with Emmy voting, which started on June 11 and ends on June 25.
“The character Midge Maisel is a strong, talented woman who strikes out on her own to forge a new path, and in the spirit of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,’ we are excited to shine a light on other fantastic, entrepreneurial women,” said Amazon’s head of marketing Mike Benson in a statement. “We hope that this campaign will inspire others to find their unique voice.”

Robin Thede remembers everything about the afternoon last October when she taped the first episode of her Bet late-night series “The Rundown With Robin Thede.”
Wearing a velvet-green suit and black pumps, she strode out onto the stage at CBS Broadcast Center on 57th Street in Manhattan with fierce determination to add the voice of an African-American woman to the late-night TV landscape.
“People kept asking me if I felt nervous or felt pressure,” Thede recalls. “I kept saying, ‘No, I’m ready.’ ”
As momentous as that first taping was for Thede, an equally important moment came months earlier at the “Rundown” production offices across the street from the stage, when her core team of writers and producers assembled for the first full day of work. Thede, a seasoned comedy scribe who was head writer for Comedy Central’s “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore,” looked around at a staff...

Mike Pence is no stranger to heaping praise on boss Donald Trump, but if you ask Twitter, the vice president outdid himself on Wednesday when he gave fawning remarks about the president at a cabinet meeting following the passage of the contentious Gop tax bill.

Pence delivered, crediting Trump with “restoring American credibility on the world stage,” spurring record-setting optimism, signing “more bills rolling back federal red tape than any president in American history” and “fighting every day for the...

#MeAt14: Alyssa Milano, Katie Couric and More Women Post Their 8th Grade Photos to Protest Roy Moore
Actresses, journalists and everyday American women are using the hashtag #MeAt14 to take aim at Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore amid allegations that he initiated sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl when he was 32.
The women, including big names like Alyssa Milano, Katie Couric and Gretchen Carlson, have used the hashtag to share photos of themselves at age 14 in an effort to raise awareness about the age of consent and underscore how a 14-year-old child is not equipped to consent to sex with adults.

The variety series Emmy race hasn’t always been a boys’ club. But Samantha Bee is bringing balance back to a category that had become way too male-dominated.
“Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” is the first female-fronted series to be nominated in the relatively new Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, which was created in 2015. That’s when the TV Academy split the Outstanding Variety Series category into two: variety talk and variety sketch series.
The first year out, “Inside Amy Schumer” won the variety sketch Emmy, becoming the first female-fronted variety show to win a series Emmy since Tracey Ullman’s “Tracey Takes On” in 1997. But that was also the first time a variety show starring a woman had even been nominated in the variety series field since “Tracey Takes On” in 1999.

Imagine an Emmy-winning showrunner inviting you into the writer’s room of a critically acclaimed TV series and asking to you to play a character based on your life story. Unheard of, right? Well, that’s exactly what happened when Jill Soloway took a shine to Ian Harvie on the set of Amazon’s Transparent in 2014.
With numerous TV guest starring roles, years spent touring at international comedy festivals and as Margaret Cho’s opening act, and now “the first trans comic special” on NBC’s digital network Seeso, interest in Harvie’s unique experience and perspective continues to grow.

Lewis Black has seen more than a few changes at The Daily Show since his Back in Black segments began airing during the show's inaugural season in 1996. Host Craig Kilborn gave way to Jon Stewart; the program gradually changed from a smug TV-news parody to an institution that viciously mocked hypocritical politicians and the media establishment that covers them; and legendary correspondents like Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and John Oliver all moved onto their own projects. The only things to truly survive all 19 years are the Moment of Zen, the theme song — and Black himself.

Republican ratchetness is a serious ailment that affects dozens of politicians each year. It’s currently hitting Gov. Mike Pence (Indiana) hard, given his state’s controversial religious freedom law that basically means business owners can turn away Lgbt customers because the Bible tells them so. It’s also taking a toll on embattled Rep. Aaron Schock (Illinois) who resigned from his House seat over an ethics scandal. Texas Senator Ted Cruz recently announced his presidential bid, which means his ratchetness is just beginning — he did call climate change activists “flat-Earthers” after all. However, this stuff is just child’s play compared to what other right-winged suits have done in the past. (We’re looking at you, Mark Sanford.)
From sex scandals to homophobic comments, these politicians represent the essence of Republican ratchetry: ignorance, stupidity, and just a bad moral compass. Isn’t it ironic these conservatives are engaging in some very un-conservative behavior?...

Republican ratchetness is a serious ailment that affects dozens of politicians each year. It’s currently hitting Gov. Sarah Palin announced her own online video channel this week, and now Twitter users are uniting under a common hashtag to fill out its programming slate. #PalinTVShows, as anyone could have guessed, mocks the conservative politician turned TV star's many follies and controversial opinions that have gained national notoriety since she campaigned alongside John McCain for the White House in 2008. Also read: Robin Thicke Bombarded by Critics During VH1's Twitter Q&A, #AskThicke The fun began Monday morning when “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” co-creator and former head writer Lizz Winstead tossed out the hashtag while asking if it's “a thing yet.

Ten years ago today, Unfiltered debuted on Air America Radio stations. While the big draw was Chuck D and comedian Lizz Winstead, the lasting effect of Unfiltered (which barely lasted a year) was that it introduced Rachel Maddow to a national audience. However, for most people today is April Fools Day, so be a little cynical when you check the news.
In the upcoming Walking Dead season, Alanna Masterson (Tara), Christian Serratos (Rosita) and Andrew J. West (Gareth) have been promoted to series regulars. I hope that means they’ve got plans for Tara.

Source: Mindy Tucker A group of Hollywood ladies teamed up for a pro-choice telethon on Monday night, raising money and awareness for those affected by Texas laws on women's health care. Over the Summer, the state's legislature made headlines when people rallied over an abortion bill, which was eventually signed into law by Governor Rick Perry. The law bans most abortions after 20 weeks, increasing restrictions for abortion clinics across the state, and hundreds of activists from both sides flooded the Texas Capitol building to voice their opinions. Since being signed into law, it's remained a heated topic of debate in the courtroom and among women. Monday's pro-choice telethon was appropriately called Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can Choose, a reference to the Friday Night Lights tagline "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose," which was a mantra for the show's Texas high school football team. The telethon was hosted by Sarah Silverman...

Fxx star W. Kamau Bell, Tanner Colby, Lizz Winstead, and Carlos Andres Gomez discussed the social divide between black and white Americans with Melissa Harris-Perry on MSNBC, after a new Reuters poll indicated that 40% of white Americans don't have a friend of another race. Harris-Perry said, "In his first month as attorney general, Eric Holder famously declared that America is a nation of cowards on matter of race because we avoid candid discussions about racial issues. Holder suggested this cowardice was rooted in our lack of sustained meaningful friendships across the racial divide. Holder said, "As a nation we've done a pretty good job in melding the races in the workplace. we work with one another, we lunch...

Comedian and Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead is feeling the wrath of the Internet after tweeting several politically charged jokes about the devastating tornado that decimated Moore, Okla., on Monday. Winstead, 51, tweeted to her following of 75,000, "This tornado is in Oklahoma so clearly it has been ordered to only target conservatives." The joke was a reference to the IRS scandal. As angry readers tweeted their outrage, Winstead stood by her tweet. In the social media age, it has become a tedious ritual to track the tasteless things that people often tweet during unfolding tragedies, and to take tiny-minded satisfaction in shaming them. The devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma are no exception. Comedian and Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead used the tornado to lampoon the current scandal-mania in a series of jokes, then apologized for it. Fox News contributor and Redstate.com editor Erick Erickson offered a tweet that was a mirror image of one of Winstead's jokes, and has not apologized.

Lena Dunham did some impromptu storytelling at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade in New York last night, as a headlining performer at A Is for Asssscat, an event to benefit A Is For, a women’s reproductive-rights organization founded by Martha Plimpton (who was hosting a sister event in L.A.) and Lizz Winstead (who was emceeing the evening in Chelsea). The performance started when a crowd member shouted a random word or term to prompt a true story from Lena. Then Ucb and SNL cast members (including John Lutz and Vanessa Bayer) assembled onstage to act out improv sketches based off her roughly six-minute tales. “I’m experiencing anxiety,” was Dunham’s initial reaction to her first prompt (“cousin”), which ultimately led to a story about her cousin that she asked we keep from his parents, so we will. For her second round, she told a story inspired by the “call of duty.

Steel yourself for the following tweet posted on The Onion's feed during the Oscars: "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a cunt, right?" The Onion deleted the tweet an hour after it appeared, but the Internet's outrage on the behalf of the 9-year-old Beasts of the Southern Wild actress was instantaneous and explosive. The Wire's Wendell Pierce wrote, "@TheOnion Identify the writer. Let him defend that abhorrent verbal attack of a child. You call it humor I call it horrendous." The Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead was one of many prepared to reject any explanation involving the publication's satirical track record: "9-year olds are always so into irony. #AndAlwaysAppreciateIt #Edgy #Fail @TheOnion." Freelance writer Seve Chambers added, "I like @TheOnion, but someone has to lose a job over the Quvenzhané tweet. A line was crossed with that ugly joke." A couple...

"Welcome to 'The Daily Show'. Craig Kilborn is on assignment in Kuala Lumpur, I'm Jon Stewart."
And so began Jon Stewart's tenure as host of what has arguably become one of the most important sources of American satire over the last decade and a half. Since being created by Lizz Winstead and Madeleine Smithberg in 1996, "The Daily Show" has sought to hold both the media's and politicians' feet to the fire on wide-ranging issues. Once Stewart was chosen to replace Kilborn in 1999 -- who departed after alienating most of the show's female staff and prompting Winstead to leave after sexist comments he made in Esquire magazine -- the show was finally able to become what the creators had hoped it would be: a hilarious voice of reason and biting criticism in an absurd system.

Two pro-Democratic super PACs, the Jewish Council for Education and Research and American Bridge 21st Century, released a new video Thursday with comedian Sarah Silverman and 'The Daily Show' co-creator Lizz Winstead dissecting Gop presidential candidate Mitt Romney's comment in August 2011 that "corporations are people."
The video is part of a series of others featured at actually.org.
Jcer produced the popular video with Samuel L. Jackson titled "Wake the f*** up." The group also produced a video with Silverman in 2008 called "The Great Schlep," which encouraged Jews to visit their Florida-residing grandparents and convince them to vote for then-candidate Barack Obama.

Mention of Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” remark was absent from the first presidential debate (though Joe Biden sought to rectify that when he had his chance), but the “secret video” is still an issue in this election — especially if you’re a member of a Democratic Pac. Actress Rosie Perez just recorded an ad that focuses on a different part of that secret video: the moment when Romney quipped that if his Mexican-born father had had Mexican parents, he would “have a better shot at winning this.” Romney followed that line with this one: “And I say that jokingly. But...

Jerry Seinfeld is a few episodes deep into his new web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," but he has yet to get coffee, in a car, with a funny lady. Luckily, Sandra Bernhard has picked up the slack with her new web series "Comedians Walking & Getting Mani-Pedis."
In the first episode, Sandra catches up with comedian/author/activist Lizz Winstead, the co-creator of "The Daily Show," on a stroll through New York City. After reaching their destination, the pair dish on style, dating, political issues and of course, colonoscopies as their hands and feet get did.
