Controversial artist Roger Waters is back with a controversial new release: a re-recording of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, made without the involvement of any of the other members of Pink Floyd. Listen to The Dark Side of the Moon Redux below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Beyond giving Waters the opportunity to one-up his estranged bandmates, re-recording one of the most famous albums of all time appeared to give the artist a chance to update its message for modern times, with a matured perspective. “The original Dark Side of the Moon feels in some ways like the lament of an elder being on the human condition,” Waters said in a statement. “But Dave [Gilmour], Rick [Wright], Nick [Mason], and I were so young when we made it, and when you look at the world around us, clearly the message hasn’t stuck. Roger Waters has shared a new version of “Time” from his forthcoming solo LP, The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux.
Instead of commenting on the track, Waters offered up a series of lines that reflect the song’s lyrics as a statement: “Ticking away……./ The voice had been there all along/ Hidden in the stones in the rivers/ Hidden in all the books/ Hidden in plain sight/ It was the voice of reason/ Thought I’d something more to say………”

Margo Price has readied a follow-up to her January album Strays, naturally dubbed Strays II. She’ll roll out the sequel project in three acts culminating in a double album due out October 13th, and also embark on a tour of the UK and US this fall. What’s more, the three songs comprising Act I: Topanga Canyon are out now.
Strays had a pretty mystical origin story involving a psychedelic trip to the South Carolina countryside, and Price wrote some of the music that would become Strays II during the same excursion. Before combining the two projects into a double LP, the nine songs on the second record will initially be shared as three acts known as Topanga Canyon, Mind Travel, and Burn Whatever’s Left.
Out today is Strays II’s Act I: Topanga Canyon, featuring the tracks “Strays,” “Closer I Get (ft. Ny Oh),” and “Malibu (ft.

Margo Price continues to embark on her own evolution with Strays II, an extension of her original 2023 opus with nine new songs that will arrive in the form of three distinct acts.

Roger Waters, would rather re-record old Pink Floyd music than reunite with the band’s surviving members for a new tour. As such, on October 6th he’ll release his solo re-recording of the band’s seminal 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon. Today, he’s previewing (Roger’s Version) with the album’s lead single, his version of “Money.”

Angel Olsen returns this April with a new EP titled Forever Means, a collection of tracks recorded during — but left off — her acclaimed 2022 LP Big Time.
Ahead of the EP’s April 14th release, the singer has shared “Nothing’s Free,” a track about “that point when self-denial breaks, and you notice how long youʼve been restraining who you are,” Olsen said in a statement.

If you loved Angel Olsen’s 2022 album Big Time, you’re in luck: the singer-songwriter is issuing a new EP of songs from that project’s recording sessions called Forever Means, and the track “Nothing’s Free” is available to stream now.
Olsen began pondering the definition of “forever” while on the road. “I was somewhere traveling,” she recalled in a statement, “stopped for a few days and wandering the city, and I was thinking ‘what does forever really mean? What are the things I’m seeking in friendship or love, and how can forever be attainable if we’re always changing?’” Ultimately, Olsen decided that “Forever is to remain curious, never letting yourself think you’re finished learning or exploring, while trying also to be kind and honest.”

Nashville singer-songwriter Margo Price has spent the past half-dozen years showing she’s much more than a country artist. In 2016, she debuted with Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, a showcase of throwback honky-tonk and hard-edged drinking songs. The album helped crystallize and capture a rising demand for those throwback Nashville styles at the time, playing a fundamental role in their ongoing resurgence from stars like Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers.

Listening to Angel Olsen’s records used to feel like stumbling into an empty roadside bar and finding the greatest torch singer the world had ever forgotten. She sang about loneliness and mistrust, her voice burning pure and intense whether the guitars were solo-acoustic or electric and in the red. The intimacy of those early LPs made many fans feel like she was staring directly into their souls, creating a level of legend-in-her-own-time acclaim that Olsen herself has sometimes seemed ambivalent about.

When the bells toll and 2021 turns to 2022 in a few weeks, it will mark four calendar years since the last time the world got a new album out of Father John Misty. This would have been an unthinkably long time to wait during the run that gave us not one but three album cycles full of mordant folk-rock philosophizing and off-the-wall interviews between 2015 and 2018, but a lot has happened in the world since then, and anyway, papa’s vacation appears to be ending soon.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7’ for the original-screenplay award,”Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”
Writers Guild winners in the screenplay categories go on to win Oscars almost two-thirds of the time, although the two awards sometimes differ because the WGA is an award strictly for screenplays for movies that were made under the terms of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or similar agreements from a number of international guilds.

Before the Indie Spirits, before the Oscars, there are the guilds, and as Hollywood inches its way through a protracted awards season, it’s up to each voting body to dole out their own accolades. On Sunday night, it was time for the writers to shine, as the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for film, television, news, and more, all voted on by fellow writers. As IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has noted, the WGA’s film nominees are less predictive than an indication of what’s losing and gaining heat, from the missing early 2020 releases “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The King of Staten Island,” and “Da 5 Bloods,” to such surging movies as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Promising Young Woman,” all of which recently earned Best Picture nods from the Academy.

The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

The concept of “the prostitute” has been fascinating directors all over the world for quite some time, with the psychosynthesis of the sex professionals drawing as much interest as the opportunity to use the concept as a metaphor for various sociopolitical comments. Despite the fact that such themes always had issues with censorship, an abundance of movies about the subject can be also found in Asian cinema, and particularly in countries like Japan, S. Korea and India.
In this list, we will present 20 of the greatest Asian films about prostitutes in chronological order, with a focus on diversity regarding countries, directors and style of presentation.
1. Gate of Flesh
Mini-militias of prostitutes create their own code to survive in “Gates Of Flesh”, by selling themselves in an organised gang fashion, protecting their turf, of bombed out Tokyo, viciously. This was no time for romanticism, frivolity or even love; this is a brutal game of survival.

Roger Waters has released a new recording and video for “The Gunner’s Dream.” The song from Pink Floyd’s 1983 album, The Final Cut, tells the story of a dying airman who dreams of a safer, better world, without war.
The black-and-white visual opens on Waters playing the piano and singing alone in his studio. His bandmates — guitarist Dave Kilminster, drummer Joey Waronker, bassist Gus Seyffert, guitarist Jonathan Wilson, pianist and keyboardist Jon Carin, Hammond player Bo Koster and Lucius’ Jesse Wolfe and Holly Laessig — join him from their respective...

Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a unique case of a filmmaker, even for an industry as diverse as the Japanese one, and not just for his additional roles as a film critic and a professor at Tokyo University of Arts. Starting with Pink Film and low-budget V-cinema, he went on to be nominated for an Oshima Prize at Pia Film Festival, worked with Shinji Somai, and won a scholarship to the Sundance Institute by submitting his original screen play for “Charisma”. This particular achievement allowed him to study in the US despite already being a director for almost ten years, which led him to his first major international success, with “Cure”. The film kickstarted a path that led him to the top of J-horror, with his movies, though, implementing a unique approach, that of the “slow-terror”. Some years later, he re-invented himself as he started to deal with family dramas with particular success,...

Tim Heidecker and Weyes Blood have released “Oh How We Drift Away,” the album closer from their upcoming collaborative project, Fear of Death.
Following the singles “Property,” “Fear of Death” and “Nothing,” “Oh How We Drift Away” fits into the rest of the album’s Bernie Taupin/Elton John writing experiment; Heidecker penned the lyrics to the track and Natalie Mering (a.k.a. Weyes Blood) set them to music. Over swooning violin and piano, Mering sings of a fading friendship: “You can come knocking/I won’t be home.

Grace Potter delivered an all-star rendition of her song “Eachother” for Friday’s Late Show, with the singer recruiting Jackson Browne, Lucius and Marcus King for the socially distanced performance.
Potter debuted the new single two weeks ago — her first new music since 2019’s Daylight — and recaptured the collaboration for late-night, kicking off “Eachother” solo before her guests entered the track one-by-one, with Marcus King handling the second verse and guitar solo, Browne singing the third verse and duo Lucius providing backing vocals throughout. Guitarists Jonathan Wilson and Dylan Day also appear in the video.

Through the lens of social distancing and quarantines, Jonathan Wilson’s new album, Dixie Blur, released March 6th, seems made for this moment. It’s a bittersweet, nostalgic record that recalls both a time and a place that’s impossible to revisit. For Wilson specifically, that’s his native Thomasville, North Carolina, but the message is universal: You can’t go home again.
“I went back to North Carolina not too long ago, to my hometown, and took some footage for a video,” says Wilson a few days before the LP’s release.

But sometimes we also just have to ask them a nagging question or two, and they’re game.

Slated for March 19th, the Luck Reunion brings together left-of-center artists who are both preserving and progressing American music. Luck is also defined by frequent collaboration and a sense of intimacy, especially for the lucky few who pack the ranch’s “Chapel Stage.” This year, the Haden Triplets, Sierra Ferrell,...

Over the decades, Browne has found himself in some unusual situations linked to his music: singing in a jail cell after being arrested while protesting the opening of a nuclear power plant, or recording an album (Running on Empty) on tour buses and in hotel rooms. To that list, Browne can now add witnessing a voodoo ceremony in Haiti.
“People would go into this kind of trance,” the singer-songwriter recalls of one evening in that country, during the making of his latest project. “Then they began to hurl themselves backwards into the crowd,...

Cody Jinks repurposes his 2008 song “Think Like You Think” for a new album, Katie Pruitt captures the feeling of youth in her hook-filled “Expectations,” and Luke Combs cuts loose with Brooks & Dunn on “1, 2 Many” in this week’s list of the best country and Americana songs.
Cody Jinks, “Think Like You Think”
From the baritone guitar riffs to the deep-seated vocals, “Think Like You Think” rides low in the saddle, mixing the smooth rumble of Randy Travis’ Eighties classics with a raw, honest performance that does justice to Cody Jinks’ outlaw roots.

A gorgeous jazz interpretation of Patsy Cline’s “Walkin’ After Midnight,” a full-throated live cover of Steve Young’s “Seven Bridges Road,” and an Apollo 11 homage make up this week’s list of must-hear tunes.
Staci Griesbach, “Walkin’ After Midnight”
Jazz singer Staci Griesbach pays tribute to Patsy Cline, turning the country legend’s first major hit into a reimagined song better suited to the cocktail lounge than the honky-tonk. Rooted in upright piano, bass, and bursts of saxophone, Griesbach’s “Walkin’ After Midnight” suits the original’s nocturnal theme surprisingly well.
