There have been at least 5 film adaptations of "Brewster's Millions" - the 1902 novel by George Barr McCutcheon. But maybe the one most are familiar with is the 1985 comedy film starring Richard Pryor and John Candy, which was directed by Walter Hill (who was not really known for comedies. He got this job after directing Eddie Murphy in "48 Hours"). The movie received mixed reviews en route to a $40+ million domestic box office. Now the story will be revisited again, for the umpteenth time, in a feature film that will be directed by Robert Townsend, from a screenplay penned by Michael Williams Schmidt. The novel revolves around Montgomery...

The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World Museum of Modern Art, NYC December 14, 2014-April 5, 2015
Between 1942 and 1963 Dorothy Canning Miller was the curator of the influential Americans shows at the Museum of Modern Art. Beginning with Americans 1942: 18 Artists From 9 States and ending with Americans 1963, Miller presented the work of artists such as Hyman Bloom, Robert Motherwell, Jay DeFeo, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Lee Bontecou, and Frank Stella -- artists who would ultimately be the defining contributors to the mid-century American art historical canon. After a gap of nearly a half-century, MoMA once again is reviving this tradition with Laura Hoptman’s The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemoporal World, an exhibition of seventeen painters representing current trends in painting.
In contrast to the U.S-centric exhibitions of the past, Forever Now emphasizes the concept of "a-temporality," a phenomenon of culture defined by the science fiction/cultural theorist William Gibson,...

For the third summer in a row, ABC is airing a high-quality, well-produced, genre-bending reality competition series. Two years ago it experimented with the highly interactive "Big Brother" knock-off called "The Glass House," and followed that with last summer's reality version of a murder mystery dinner theatre, "Whodunnit," which was produced by CSI creator Anthony Zuiker. ABC didn't give either a second chance: the former was officially cancelled and the latter didn't return for a second season. This summer introduced "The Quest," which is the most fully realized hybrid of a scripted series and reality competition yet. It sent contestants into a scripted world populated by actors and governed by an original mythology that tightly integrates reality competitions and eliminations, but also allows contestants to be entirely unscripted and keeps the game pure. The series comes from six world-class producers (Emmy-winning "Amazing Race" producers Elise Doganieri and Bertram Van Munster,...

Mark Wahlberg was spotted filming director Rupert Wyatt's The Gambler in downtown Los Angeles yesterday, February 3rd. The film is a remake of the 1974 movie starring James Caan as an English professor with a gambling addiction. In the original, Caan's character falls into debt to the mob for $40,000 but seems to relish the thrill of gambling against the long shot. As a professor of literature at a New York University, he is in over his head, until his mother gives him some money which he quickly tries to increase in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, the odds never allow him to win or fully recover, so his future is in the mob's hands. Michael Williams’s fourth show since 2007 at this painting-centric gallery gives electric evidence that his painterly promise has come to impressive fruition. In the two spacious galleries of the newly relocated Canada, I was stunned into something like a stupor by Williams's work. No matter how closely or long I looked at these eleven large colorful paintings, I could not gain a purchase on their surfaces. His new work delivers a sort of tranquilizer bullet to one's ability to detect haptic presence. A viewer knows there's paint on the canvas, and yet when one tries to focus on it through the multiple overlays of images and abstract fields, the paintings continually come into and then fall away from actually feeling physical. Philosopher Maurice Blanchot has written about such paradoxical "inaccessibility" as something being in "infinite pursuit of its own source." I know that I felt like Williams's new paintings suspended...

The trick of Miley Cyrus is that we’re not talking about anybody but Miley Cyrus right now. Her Vma performance with Robin Thicke, who dressed as Beetlejuice‘s Floridian pimp nephew, was maybe offensive, ill-conceived, not conceived, and a mess, but that’s more than I remember about Katy Perry‘s anodyne performance of “Roar” or Bruno Mars‘ serviceable take on “Gorilla.” Though Lady Gaga delivered a pitch-perfect, costume-morphing rendition of “Applause,” she mainly served up an affirmation of her own shtick. Miley gave us something more sinister: an all-new entity with a jiggling tongue and marionette pelvis who wanted to be called Miley Cyrus.
Since that time, she’s vaulted into a PR blitz which has included an SNL appearance, a radio-ready ballad called “Wrecking Ball,” Good Morning America, a ridiculous Terry Richardson photo spread, and an unexpected epistolary war with Sinead O’Connor. Just a month after...

At ABC‘s upfront, there were a few things that the network wanted to make sure you knew. 1) They are really impressed with the idea that people are going to watch Rebel Wilson do just about anything, and 2) There isn’t anything they’re happier about than bringing you more episodes of television created by Shonda Rhimes.
On these notes, the network would love for you to know that more Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are coming your way. These, ABC would like to impress upon you (as advertisers) are really good shows. Because… hellllooo… so many people watch them that we’re bringing them back. Is Miley Cyrus collaborating with One Direction's Niall Horan? That was the question on lots of lips when the "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks" singer tweeted a photo of Niall with music producer Michael Williams, aka Mike WiLL Made It.
The caption to Miley's photo says, "Studio with @MikeWiLLMadeIt." Apparently Miley thinks Niall could pass for her twin with his bleached blonde spiky hair do. Then she followed up the tweet with an actual photo of herself and Mike behind the mixing board in the studio.

Why Watch? Holy. Hell. It took 6 months and 2 states for Marc Donahue and Michael Williams to create this epic piece of stop-motion mastery called Dream Music: Part 2. The sheer amount of labor (up to 8 hours for each 3-4 seconds of film) is astounding, but what sets it over the top is the attention to detail and the visual connectivity they manage (from bits of nature found in urban areas flowing out of forests to snowboarding on train tracks). Not to mention the overt and subtle nods to the lyrics that push the piece forward. More than mere gimmick, this is transportational filmmaking. Consider the ambitious experiment a success. If there’s a stop-motion piece larger and more detailed than this, I’d love to see it. What will it cost you? “Only” 8 minutes. Skip work. Watch more short films.

Chicago – In Feb. 2012, the Music Box Theatre (on Chicago’s north side) offered a challenge to Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert. If he could beat them in predicting the 86th Annual Oscars – as part of his “Outguess Ebert” contest – then the theatre would screen any film chosen by the Pulitzer Prize-winning legend. Roger Ebert presents “Red Rock West” at the Music Box Theatre on May 1, 2012.
“Red Rock West” is a noir thriller from 1994 starring Nicolas Cage, J.T. Walsh, Laura Flynn Boyle and Dennis Hopper, and directed by John Dahl. Cage portrays Michael Williams, a drifter who is mistaken for a hit man hired to kill the wife (Boyle) of a local bar owner (Walsh). Williams takes the upfront money, and attempts to warn the potential victim of the set-up. Things get a bit complicated when the real hit man, “Lyle from Dallas” (Hopper) finally gets to town. Everyone that I have ever talked to who has seen The Wire will give me at least a 15 minute summation on why I need to see The Wire. The best show ever is said at least 2 or 3 times. I still have yet to sit down and “discover” this TV show. But I am aware of one actors work on the series, Michael Williams. He portrayed Omar Little and he will now take on the task of portraying one of the more enigmatic personalities ever to grace the world of hip hop: Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

There’s a reason I love the horror genre so much, and it’s not because of the quality of the films. In one of the most unlikely combinations of people to ever collaborate on a project, Clancy Brown, Aka Kurgan from Highlander, has officially joined the cast of Nothing to Fear, a horror thriller being produced by none other than former Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash. Along with the Steve Niles-directed Wake the Dead, the movie is one of the first from his company Slasher Films.
Directed by creature and storyboard artist Anthony Leonardi III, Nothing to Fear also stars Anne Heche (Rampart, the upcoming That’s What She Said), James Tupper (Mr. Popper’s Penguins) and another new cast member, Ethan Peck (In Time). The plot focuses on a family trying to start a new life in a small Kansas town, only to find out that their...

Back in the "Carnivale" days Clancy Brown turned in a mesmerizing performance as Brother Justin, and now that word has come he'll be returning to the cloth for Slasher Films' Nothing to Lose, we couldn't be happier. Ethan Peck has also signed on to the project as a townsperson with a past.
Per THR Anne Heche and James Tupper are already on board for the movie, which centers on a family whose journey toward a better life in a small town is savagely derailed by a charismatic but emotionally conflicted and evil pastor (Brown, pictured right).
“He’s in one of the movies we remember as kids that make us do what we do now,” said producer Rob Eric, referring to Brown’s memorable turn, to the genre fanboy crowd at least, as the Kurgan in 1986's action fantasy Highlander. “He’s evil to the point that he believes he is doing good.
