COLOGNE, Germany -- For one last time, Germany's most famous news anchor sent the country to bed with his trademark sign-off: "Have a pleasant evening and an unhurried night." After 15 years as the face of the country's top-rated newscast, "Tagesthemen" on pubcaster ARD, Ulrich Wickert has signed off for good. His last show was Thursday night. Wickert's dry, wry delivery and his talent for translating complex issues into simple, straightforward language endeared him to a generation of German viewers, who tuned in every night. Wickert enjoyed ratings U.S. anchors can only dream of. His 10:30 nightly newscast regularly drew a 25% market share, with upwards of 5 million viewers.
