Exclusive: Blue Bayou filmmaker Justin Chon has signed with WME and Blue Marble Management for representation.
Chon recently directed and executive produced the new Apple TV+ series Chief of War, starring Jason Momoa and produced by Chernin and Fifth Season. The series will premiere in 2024 on Apple TV+.
He also wrote, directed, and starred in the 2021 film Blue Bayou, which sold competitively to Focus Features and premiered at Cannes as part of the Un Certain Regard selection. When Village Roadshow CEO Steve Mosko first met with Kevin Garnett to discuss the basketball star’s pivot to the world of entertainment, the longtime film executive says it was immediately clear that the NBA champion’s Content Cartel production company wasn’t merely a vanity label.
“He just laid out how passionate he was about the business and building his company, and was beyond impressive,” Mosko tells Variety in a phone interview, recounting the lunch meeting. “I knew he just wasn’t another athlete who wanted a production shingle so he could tell his friends he has a production shingle.”

Exclusive: The Locke siblings are set for Locke & Key, Netflix’s series adaptation of Joe Hill’s comic, from Hill, Carlton Cuse and Idw Entertainment. Connor Jessup (American Crime) and British actress Emilia Jones (Utopia) have been cast as Tyler and Kinsey Locke, respectively. They join It‘s Jackson Robert Scott, who plays their brother Bode Locke.
Netflix in July gave a 10-episode series order to Locke & Key, which had been originally developed and piloted by Hulu. Netflix did not pick up the existing Hulu pilot, written by Hill, to series but set out to redevelop the scripts, with Aron Eli Coleite and Meredith Averill joining Hill and Cuse on the show’s creative team. Fox is developing the comedy series “Best Lives” from CBS Television Studios and writer Daisy Gardner.
The project is described as a hybrid multi- and single-camera comedy that revolves around a brother and sister who find themselves both starting over after divorce.
Gardner, an alum of ABC’s “The Goldbergs” and “Downward Dog,” penned the script and will executive produce with Lisa Harrison of Long Con Inc. If it moves forward, the project will be a co-production between CBS TV Studios and the Fox network.

Studio 8 has secured the movie rights to “Prophet,” based on the Image Comics character from “Deadpool” creator Rob Liefeld.
Studio 8 plans to build a franchise around the title character, John Prophet, a DNA-enhanced super-soldier placed into a cryogenic freeze for a future mission only to awaken in the wrong time — which is the present — searching for a mission that does not exist. He’s a ruthless berserker who must find his humanity.
Liefeld, Adrian Askarieh, and Brooklyn Weaver will produce. Liefeld created John Prophet in another comic, “Youngblood,” which led to the launch of the Prophet series in 1993. Liefeld has created over 150 characters, including Marvel’s Deadpool, Cable, Domino, and the X-Force.
