CBS has ordered its first new series for the 2025-26 broadcast season. The network has given a green light to Fire Country spinoff Sheriff Country, headlined by Morena Baccarin. The series order was announced Thursday during CBS’ presentation in Los Angeles.
In Sheriff Country, Baccarin stars as straight-shooting sheriff Mickey Fox, the stepsister of Cal Fire’s division chief Sharon Leone (Diane Farr of Fire Country), who investigates criminal activity as she patrols the streets of small-town Edgewater while contending with her ex-con father and a mysterious incident involving her wayward daughter.

Staying faithful: Has there been another entertainment show with an impact nearing that of The Traitors in recent years? The reality whodunnit format has sold around the world after debuting in the Netherlands, becoming a smash on Peacock and the BBC in the UK. For my money, it’s the casting that’s marked it out from the crowd, and casting will be all-important to the upcoming British celebrity version. As Stewart and Max revealed yesterday, the BBC and Studio Lambert — which makes the UK and U.S. versions — are close to a deal make a version with famous faces. When Guy Ritchie’s crime comedy series The Gentlemen debuted on Netflix in March, it came in at #1 Global Top 10 for English-Language Series, garnering 1.2B minutes viewed in its first four days on the platform, according to Nielsen. That being said, will there be a Season 2?
“It wasn’t genuinely discussed,” star Theo James admitted today, in an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders TV. “I think it would be a wrangling process with all of us and Guy. But also, I think with a show like this, if you’re going to do more, you need to come up with a really interesting conceit for Season 2. Because as much as we enjoyed it and as fun as it was, it needs narrative drive.”
If an interesting idea is put forward, he said, then maybe another installment is in the cards. “But I think before that,” James added, “there needs to be discussions,...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from Friday’s episode of Fire Country on CBS.
Morena Baccarin made her debut as deputy sheriff Mickey on Fire Country — a role that could lead to a spinoff series if the TV (or CBS) Gods deem it worthy.
In the episode “Alert the Sheriff,” Mickey enters the scene in Edgewater via helicopter; she’s in pursuit of a money launderer who ends up dumping $50,000 in cash over the convicts while they while they’re working in the woods. Viewers quickly learn that Mickey is not only the step-sister of Sharon (Diane Farr), she also played an unfortunate role in putting Sharon’s son Bode (Max Thieriot) behind bars before he joined the Cal Fire firefighting program.
Mickey and Sharon have been estranged, but the women use the episode to heal old wounds. Sharon also leans on Mickey for support when she learns...

Fox is doubling down on lifeguard dramas with a significant script plus penalty commitment to Baywatch, a reboot of the classic beach series. The new iteration is a co-production between Fremantle and Fox Entertainment.
Deadline revealed exclusively last April that Fremantle was working on a Baywatch remake. At the time, Fox already had started conversations with the indie studio for the potential series while also developing another lifeguard drama franchise, Rescue: Hi-Surf, from John Wells Prods. The latter, a co-production between Warner Bros. TV and Fox Entertainment, was subsequently picked up to series for the 2023-24 season; it is now on track for a fall 2024 launch due to strike-related delays.
Meanwhile, Fox remained interested in Baywatch, potentially as a summer series.

If you’ve been wondering about that potential Fire Country spinoff, we’ve got a little something to pique your interest.
If there was any doubt that CBS hoped to turn Fire Country into the next franchise, a la NCIS or FBI, this casting decision shows they’re hoping to do just that.
Deadline reported today that the spinoff has found its lead.
Morena Baccarin has landed the role of a sheriff, poised to headline a series if the character takes off during Fire Country Season 2.
Earlier reports suggested that this role could play a larger part on the second season and, if popular, spin off to a series of its own.
However, this news suggests that the role might be for one upcoming episode of the series rather than a recurring role that would allow viewers to get to know her a bit before spinning off the canvas.

Exclusive: Morena Baccarin (Deadpool franchise) is set to appear in an upcoming episode of CBS’ Fire Country, playing a sheriff character that could lead her own series. Baccarin will guest star in the Season 2 episode with an option to become a series regular in a potential spinoff series, Deadline has learned. Like the mothership series, the proposed offshoot would be produced by CBS Studios.
Fire Country stars Max Thieriot as a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison release firefighting program in his rural Northern California hometown of Edgewater.
In the planted spinoff episode, which will air later in the season, Baccarin will play Mickey, a Sheriff’s Deputy for fifteen years who knows every corner of Edgewater … and every one of its inhabitants. This is her town and she’s fiercely protective of it.

CBS is looking to turn another successful drama into a franchise. The network will introduce a new character in an episode from Fire Country‘s upcoming second season that could anchor her own series, sources tell Deadline.
Casting is currently underway for the role, a female sheriff, which is an episodic guest star with an option to become a series regular.
Sources caution that this is not a formal backdoor pilot order, and CBS could go different routes with the new character if the episode is well received, spinning off the character into her own series or adding the actress to the cast of the Fire Country mothership.
CBS’ decision to explore a Fire Country spinoff is not surprising, given the fact that the CBS Studios-produced drama starring Max Thieriot ranked as the most watched new broadcast series last season, averaging 8 million viewers per episode, 10 million in live+35 multi-platform viewing.

The Drew Barrymore Show launched its fourth season Monday, and not a word was spoken about the strikes and controversy that has surrounded the show in recent weeks. Barrymore introduced her guest Shania Twain, saying to the audience, “Alright everybody, welcome to season four. Let’s go girls,” without comment about her return following the recently ended writers strike and ongoing actors strike.
Barrymore went straight into her interview that was filmed with Twain at the Grammy-winning artist’s Vegas ranch.
As announced earlier this month, the show returned without its writers, WGA members Chelsea White, Cristina Kinon and Liz Koe, who decided to depart the show. Sources close to the show confirmed to Deadline that it extended three offers to the trio as soon as they were allowed to after the strike but they declined. It began interviewing writers and said that it would be in compliance with the guild.

Writers play a key part of the Emmy ceremony, and the show also requires a production lead time, so the consensus is that, if there is no resolution to the work stoppage in sight by end of July or early August, the Emmys, currently scheduled for Sept. 18, will have to be postponed.
That is real possibility as AMPTP is still negotiating with SAG-AFTRA, with talks looking to go down to the wire on the Jun 30 deadline and maybe beyond if negotiations are extended as rumored.

On May 10, CBS unveiled a fall 2023 lineup that didn’t factor the potential impact from the ongoing writers strike (and a possible SAG-AFTRA work stoppage). Besides the unscripted Wednesday, comprised of supersized episodes of Survivor and The Amazing Race, and Sunday anchor 60 Minutes, the announced schedule features all scripted series Sunday-Friday, none of which has episodes in the can.
A month later, CBS brass are looking at alternatives, George Cheeks, President and CEO, CBS and Chief Content Officer, News and Sports, Paramount+, said during a keynote at Banff moderated by Deadline’s Peter White.
“We wanted to build our schedule for when the world goes back to normal,” Cheeks said. “Once we had done that, once we locked it in, we spent a lot of time focusing on what it’s going to look like.”
He elaborated on the revised CBS fall scheduling plans which are expected to be officially revealed soon.

Fire Country may provide some much-needed kindling for a new franchise at CBS.
While speaking at the Banff World Media Festival on Tuesday, CBS Chief George Cheeks hinted at the possibility that its top-rated procedural could go the way of NCIS and result in one — or more — fiery spinoffs.
“We are focused on mass-appeal franchises,” Cheeks told Deadline’s Peter White. “We started with expanding universes, reimagining, but also creating new franchises. And again, this season’s number one show was Fire Country, which completely lends itself to building out a whole new universe. So it is really important for us to double down on a franchise focus.”
“It became very clear that not only was the show special, it really felt like this could be a great example of us building together a franchise from scratch,” Cheeks continued. “And so I’m like, ‘you guys, congratulations, you got your back nine.

HBO boss Casey Bloys had a word or two to say about the ongoing strike while speaking at this morning’s Warner Bros Discovery Upfront in New York City.
Before beginning the Max portion of the presentation, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content addressed the elephant in the room — how there were no celebrities to help promote the upcoming year of new programs on the platform.
“First, let me just start by saying I am hopeful that a fair resolution is found soon with writers that would of course return talent to this stage,” said Bloys. “Let’s be honest, making this a far more entertaining show. Until then you’re kind of stuck with me and my clips.”
He then kicked off a short reel of clips promoting the new season of Sex and the City and a car show featuring Robert Downey Jr.

Updated with Mark Marshall comments. Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, and interim ad sales chief Mark Marshall weren’t on the production call sheet until very recently for the company’s upfront at Radio City on Monday morning.
Pressed into action after the stunning, consecutive exits over the past few weeks of CEO Jeff Shell and ad sales and partnerships chief Linda Yaccarino, who left to become CEO of Twitter just last week, Lazarus opened the event with self-effacing humor. Following a song-and-dance sequence featuring Ted, Seth Macfarlane’s bawdy, talking teddy bear, Lazarus asked the crowd, “What was more surprising today? Good afternoon Insiders, Max Goldbart here, and with Cannes just a few days away we’ve got plenty for you to digest in this week’s newsletter. You can subscribe here.
Cannes You Feel It
Final weekend arrives: Film execs are frantically packing suitcases, polishing pitches and tying down meetings, in between squeezing in haircuts or getting their nails done, as the countdown for the 76th Cannes Film Festival and its Marché du Film enters its final weekend. More than 12,500 cinema professionals will descend on the Croisette this year, with the Marché du Film head Guillaume Esmiol telling Deadline this week that the event will likely break its attendance record of 2019 – in a sign the pandemic is well and truly over. One of the biggest returning territories will be China, with more than 250 professionals registered to attend against just 55 in 2022. Liz expertly explores what this might mean for business in this analysis piece.

No, it’s not just you.
Everyone is feeling like the entertainment industry has been stalling out as the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers attempt to hammer out a new film and TV contract before May 1, when the current one expires.
With widespread belief that a strike is all but certain, any new business is being tabled until the networks and streamers have a better idea of what is going to happen in the coming weeks. That has meant way fewer pitches, since the chance of a sale is slim. They “are not taking any risks and are feeling paralyzed,” as one seller put it of buyers.
“No one is buying. This is the worst marketplace that I have ever experienced,” a veteran studio executive lamented.
“Some places are still hearing pitches, but at this point the expectation going into the room is that they...

eOne: Lionsgate & Legendary Remain Among 4 Potential Buyers As Hasbro Company Sale Nears Finish Line
Here is the latest I hear on eOne. Lionsgate and Legendary are still in contention to acquire a majority stake in the indie film and TV studio, which has been put up for sale. I hear there are two other suitors, private equity firm Cvc Capital Partners and distributor GoDigital Media Group. Deadline reported a month ago that Fremantle also was among the bidders. According to sources, the indie no longer is pursuing eOne as the target price has climbed up beyond what it was willing to pay for the assets.
I hear the final bids are due by end of the month. Reps for Hasbro, Lionsgate, Legendary, Cvc Capital and GoDigital had no comment or didn’t respond to requests for comment.
The assets that have been put up for sale by the toymaker include all scripted and unscripted TV production (except for the Family Brands division housing such...

For actors Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts, as well as director Paris Barclay, the critical mission with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was to shift the focus of the narrative around the serial killer away from Dahmer himself and toward his many victims, as well as the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed him to get away with his crimes.

ABC is in negotiations with Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) to headline Motherland, a comedy pilot based on the British series. Karan Soni (Deadpool franchise) has been tapped for a lead in the project, from writer Julieanne Smolinski, Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman Television, Paul Feig’s Feigco Entertainment, Lionsgate and ABC Signature. Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) has come on board to direct.
Written by Smolinski, Motherland centers on Julia (the role Kemper has been in talks for over the past several weeks), a working mom for whom nothing is working so she goes looking for her village. With the help of new friends Calvin (Soni) and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time. This is a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief…then realized it’s Sunday.

Promising “2023 will be a year of building,” Warner Bros Discovery boss David Zaslav made a point today on the company’s latest earnings call to sing the praises of CNN’s “more inclusive range of voices and viewpoints.”
Pledging to “continue advancing on this balance strategy,” the CEO of the cable newser’s parent company singled out having more members of the Republican Party on the air. Pointing to the nearly weeklong chaos last month of the bickering GOP over 15 ballots to elect a Speaker in the House of Representatives, Zaslav noted “when over 70 Republicans came on our air during the congressional speaker election process.”

Motion Content Group, an industrious producer and co-financier of Love Island, Wynonna Earp and some 1,800 other series globally, is rebranding as GroupM Motion Entertainment in North America.
The move comes amid a broader pivot toward premium programming.
Motion Content, already well-established in more than two dozen territories, made a major push into the U.S. several years ago, with CEO Richard Foster relocating from London to LA. Those efforts took shape just before Covid upended the production sector.
GroupM Motion Entertainment will be co-led by Foster, Global CEO GroupM Motion Entertainment, and Kirk McDonald, CEO GroupM North America.
Beginning in 2009 as GroupM Entertainment, the unit initially worked with broadcasters such as Viacom’s Channel 5, then owned by controversial British media baron Richard Desmond, to pay for a range of factual and entertainment titles. Multi-faceted deals were structured by covered advertising and international ancillary arrangements. It then moved into drama,...

Blood is a horror film directed by Brad Anderson starring Michelle Monaghan.
A horror film in which, curiously, the acting is outstanding.
And this is not exactly good for the genre: don´t do much scarin’.
Movie Review Blood (2022)
Blood is a movie that, despite its title, does not cause an impact that it should in the retina of the viewer, at least for a (supposedly) horror film.
This is a good movie in all senses, from the technical level all the way to the development of the characters and the settings. It has rhythm and takes its time to do the presentations, in developing the feelings of the child and the dog correctly, but this development, which is kind of tiresome, will detract the horror from the fans who expect something a little more impacting, and above all, horrifying.
Blood, in this sense, is almost a realistic film with suspense.

Hello and welcome back, Insiders. Jesse Whittock here to guide you through another week in film and TV. Onwards to the weekend…
UK Production Booms… Sort Of
Slow Horses
Feeling a little peaky: There was a lot of good news in the BFI’s latest official production spend stats – and some worrying stuff, too. The top line figures for the UK’s film and TV industries were excellent: record spend of £6.3Bn (7.8Bn), up more than £600M on the (also record-setting) £5.6Bn from 2021. Film production was up a welcome 27 to almost £2Bn but high-end TV (Hetv) once again provided the lion’s share (£4.3Bn), as shows like Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Slow Horses and Top Boy drove up spend. Inwards investment – a fancy way of saying ‘money from overseas’ – accounted for 88 of that total, but Hetv spend was actually down 3 year-on-year. As we all know, U.

It has all the makings of a new and disturbing trend in television — companies taking fully produced, unaired series and moving them off their books — but insiders are hesitant to say whether cancellations like what we saw today at Showtime, as well as what has happened at Warner Bros. Discovery, AMC, Starz, Netflix and Peacock over the last few months, is becoming the new normal.
Consider it more of a one-time “right-sizing,” they say.

Showtime has pushed the premiere date for Season 2 of Your Honor to January 2023. The 10-episode second season starring Bryan Cranston will now bow on demand and on streaming Friday, January 13, 2023, and on-air on Sunday, January 15 at 9 pm. It was initially scheduled to premiere on streaming/on demand on December 9 and on linear December 11.
As for the reasoning behind the move, Showtime pushed the show because of its serialized nature that is best watched week after week and wanted it to air without the interruption of the Christmas holidays.
The first season of Your Honor ranks as the top debut season ever on Showtime, according to the network.
This is one of the first major scheduling decisions since David Nevins announced his departure as Chairman and CEO of Showtime Networks, and Chris McCarthy would be taking over at the helm of the premium cabler.

Before “ER,” “Chicago Hope” and “The Good Doctor,” there was a great little medical drama called “St. Elsewhere.” Today, it’s not unusual to have topics like rape, abortion, domestic abuse, breast cancer discussed. But 40 years ago, such issues were taboo. Much as “Hill St. Blues” revolutionized police dramas in the early 1980s, “St. Elsewhere” pushed boundaries and opened discussions about issues that affected viewers everywhere.
“St. Elsewhere” refers to hospitals who take in the patients no other hospital wants to deal with; the fictitious St. Eligius is such an institution in Boston, a teaching hospital with more budget issues than personnel. Trailblazing medical drama series “St. Elsewhere” celebrates its 40th anniversary on October 26. Gold Derby recently gathered together 10 cast members of the NBC program for a special reunion. All episodes from the six-season original run are now available for streaming on Hulu.
The series never had the greatest of overall ratings but was saved time and again by the Peacock network due to its Emmy wins and nominations, plus excellent demographics among the 18-49 viewers who advertisers coveted. The show was set at the fictional Boston hospital St. Eligius (nicknamed St. Elsewhere because its rundown conditions), tackling topical medical subjects with unexpected deaths among the patients and staff members throughout the six seasons airing 1982-1988.

(Updated with Reelz statement) More than two years after pulling the plug on Live Pd, A&e now wants to lock up and throw away the key on the revival series On Patrol: Live.
“Without any authorization from Aetn, Big Fish [the show’s former producer] created a clone of Live Pd featuring the same primary hosts, content, format, segments, and more, and sold that virtually identical show to Reelz, a cable network seeking its first breakout hit, which then aired the show over Aetn’s repeated and vociferous objections,” says a blistering copyright-infringement complaint (read it here) filed Tuesday in federal court by A&e Television Networks against producers MGM-owned Big Fish, Half Moon Pictures and Reelz itself.
Appealing to forthcoming judges and juries, A&e is seeking a variety of damages and profits out of this action. Perhaps even more penalizing, the plaintiff also desires to see On Patrol: Live and any other...

A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.
Emmy ballots are live now, marking the first weekend of voting before they are due back June 27, and I have managed to pick up a real sense of anxiety and tension out there from the many campaigners doing everything they can possibly do to grab the attention of the some 20,000-plus voting members of the Television Academy. I feel their pain. How do you break through in this thing if your show isn’t Ted Lasso or Succession, past winners that benefit from being, well, past winners and that kind of instant recognition? Not that even Apple TV+’s breakthrough Lasso or HBO’s current juggernaut Succession are resting on their laurels.
Every member of the Academy regularly gets the slickly produced Emmy Magazine monthly, and the edition that recently arrived at a very crucial point in the season had...

CBS likes to renew its strongest series early; last year, the FBI franchise and The Equalizer were picked up in March. When May rolled around this year and none of the the Universal Television-produced CBS drama series, the highly rated FBI dramas and The Equalizer, as well as solid Friday performer Magnum P.I., had been renewed, it was clear that the two sides were going through grueling negotiations.
Ultimately, CBS did give must-haves FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International and The Equalizer two-year renewals less than two weeks before the network’s upfront. A few days later, Magnum P.I. was canceled.

“There’s always a few shows that are more challenging to close deals with,” CBS President and CEO George Cheeks told Deadline ahead of the Paramount upfront presentation. “But we got everything done we needed to get done and it never...

Julie Plec is raising a social media glass to her team, colleagues, friends and fans who were affected by The CW’s decision to cancel her shows Legacies and Roswell, and NBC’s ruling that The Endgame should be ended.
Initially, Plec tweeted a short statement on the cancellations.“It’s the Red Wedding at Wbtv/CW today,” she tweeted at first. “Much more to say, but not today. Loads of gratitude coming for fans and cast and crew in future tweets. But today, we mourn.”
After a proper mourning period, she came back to Twitter with a long string of thank-yous.
“A toast thread to the fallen and the fans who have to say goodbye,” Plec tweeted on Friday to begin her series of salutes.
“To The Endgame, a show centered around two brilliant women played by two brilliant women, surrounded by an army of great men and women,...

CBS has opted not to renew the Chuck Lorre-produced comedy series B Positive for a third season, Deadline has learned. The decision follows the cancellation last night of another Lorre-produced sophomore CBS comedy series, United States Of Al. Both had been heavily on the bubble but, given Lorre’s standing as the network’s top comedy producer of the last two decades, there was an expectation that at least one of the two shows may make the cut for next season.
Lorre will still have multiple series on CBS next season; The Big Bang Theory offshoot Young Sheldon and Bob ♥ Abishola both have been renewed, the former as part of a multi-year pickup.
