Mj, the Broadway musical about Michael Jackson and featuring his many hits, has recouped its initial investment, producers announced today.
The $22.5 million production began previews at the Neil Simon Theatre in December 2021 and opened February 1, 2022. To date, the Tony-winning musical has played to more than 750,000 patrons and has broken the box office record at the Simon 10 times, according to producers.
In addition to the Broadway production, Mj will launch a national tour this August in Chicago, and the West End premiere is set for March 2024 at London’s Prince Edward Theatre.
Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, with a book written by Lynn Nottage, the Broadway production currently stars Elijah Rhea Johnson as Michael Jackson.
The recoupment was announced today by producers Lia Vollack, John Branca and John McClain.

Qualley is set to star in the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers biopic, “Fred & Ginger,” alongside Jamie Bell. A Strange Loop was named Best Musical of the 2021-22 Broadway season, and in two of the bigger surprises of the night, Joaquina Kalukango of Paradise Square and newcomer Myles Frost of Mj took best acting honors.
In the first big surprise of the night, Kalukango won the Best Actress in a Musical Tony Award for her performance in Paradise Square, edging out frontrunner Caroline, Or Change star Sharon D Clarke. Frost, who portrays the adult Michael Jackson in Mj, was less of a surprise, though A Strange Loop‘s Jaquel Spivey was generally favored to take the prize.

As a child, Christopher Wheeldon was a ballet and musical theater kid, like as not listening to Tchaikovsky while his brothers had Michael Jackson’s Thriller on the turntable. His idea of an afternoon’s art project was reimagining the Victorian toy theater his father had built him into a Starlight Express set for his little electric cars. “I was that kid,” he says with a laugh.
But by the time Jackson had moved on to Bad in 1987, Wheeldon was ready to follow. “When I finally went to ballet boarding school, the Bad album was, kind of, my album. Those were my teen years, and my friends and I obsessively watched the Bad video. As ballet students, I think probably we saw the link to West Side Story, and I was starting to learn about Jerome Robbins and who he was and what he meant to theater, and so at...

“The goal from the very beginning was to capture the essence of Michael, but also make a new piece of art,” describes director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon of his work on “Mj the Musical.” The new Broadway musical captures a pivotal moment in the life of Michael Jackson through the use of the King of Pop’s iconic song catalog. But don’t expect the dancing to merely be a mimic of the moves and staging found in past music videos. Wheeldon and book writer Lynn Nottage weren’t interested in simply staging a recreation. “It was seeing Michael’s musical language, his dance vocabulary, through the lens of Lynn Nottage, through my lens,” explains the director. That specific lens earned him double Tony Award nominations for directing and choreography. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Winners of the 88th Annual Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 20 2022 at a ceremony hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2021-2022 theater season.

Best Musical went to “A Strange Loop,” Best Play went to “The Lehman Trilogy,” and Best Revival of a Musical was handed to “Company.” The Second Stage Theater production of “Take Me Out” prevailed in the hotly competitive Best Revival of a Play category.

Covid has caused a lot of uncertainty around Broadway. Several shows have had to suspend performances, go on hiatus, or close permanently. And the American Theatre Wing hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet. Though with that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are six productions of musicals set to open this spring. Could we see any of them contend at the next Tonys? Below is a look at the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of their authors, casts, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

In what might be the harshest of the Covid Broadway cancellations, Mj, the new Michael Jackson musical, will not return to Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre until Monday, Dec. 27, an announcement that wipes out the show’s opportunity for the lucrative pre-Christmas and Christmas Day box office.
In a tweeted statement, producers said, “As a result of multiple positive Covid test results within the company, and out of an abundance of caution, ‘Mj’ is canceling all performances through December 26th. Previews will resume Monday, December 27.”
The Mj announcement is the most far-reaching of the recent surge in Covid cancellations, which this week have tended toward one or two immediate performances followed by night-by-night decisions on further cancellations.
Mj’s 10-day shutdown is more in keeping with last month’s temporary shutdown of Chicken & Biscuits, the Douglas Lyons comedy at Circle in the Square that paused production from Nov. 9-19 due to breakthrough Covid cases.

By night, he played the troubled, tortured David Ruffin in Ain’t Too Proud, the hit Broadway show about the life and music of the Temptations. But during the day, Sykes began preparing for what should be an even more demanding and controversial job: the lead role as Michael Jackson in a musical based on his life.

Lia Vollack, a 22-year veteran of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s music and theater divisions, has formed a new company to develop Broadway productions, Deadline has confirmed. Lia Vollack Productions’ initial slate will include two shows already being prepped by Sony for 2020 premieres, including the controversial Michael Jackson musical.
The new company will produce the musicals, with Sony continuing on the projects as a partner.
In addition to Mj the Musical, Lia Vollack Productions will also produce Almost Famous, the musical based on Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film about a young Rolling Stone writer on tour with a big time rock band in the 1970s. The production, which received a pre-Broadway tryout at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater this fall, features an original score by Tom Kitt, with lyrics co-written by Kitt and Crowe. Directed by Jeremy Herrin, the musical also features a number of hit songs from the ’70s.

Broadway’s Mj The Musical, formerly known as Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, will begin previews at the Neil Simon Theatre on Tuesday, July 6, 2020, with an opening night set for Thursday, August 13, producers announced today. Casting has not been announced.
With its confirmed dates and new name – a show spokesman has said the new title is a “better and stronger choice than relying on the title of any one individual song” – the Jackson musical takes a significant step closer to a Broadway run that became the subject of considerable chatter and even skepticism after a pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago was canceled earlier this year just weeks before HBO aired Dan Reed’s damning Leaving Neverland documentary that chronicled allegations of Jackson’s molestation and sexual abuse of two underage boys.

A musical comedy featuring the songs of Britney Spears will fill the slot at the Chicago theater left vacant when producers of the upcoming Michael Jackson bio-musical scotched its own pre-Broadway run in the Windy City.
Once Upon a One More Time, with an original book by Jon Hartmere under the direction of Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages) and choreography by Keone & Mari Madrid (Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” video) will begin previews at Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre on Oct. 29, running through Dec. 1. Opening night is Nov. 13.
The Oct. 29-Dec. 1 engagement is the exact window that had been set aside for Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough before producers of that show, including the Jackson Estate, opted to nix the pre-Broadway Chicago stand last month and head straight to Broadway next year.
The world premiere Chicago engagement of the Spears show was made today by James L.

Update, with Equity statement Actors’ Equity isn’t shouldering the blame for the cancellation of a pre-Broadway engagement of the new Michael Jackson jukebox musical, saying any delays caused by the recent Equity strike were “modest.”
“It’s incredibly disappointing that the actors and stage managers who are currently working to develop this project were not informed about a major production change before a public media announcement was made,” said Brandon Lorenz, Communications Director, Actors’ Equity Association in a statement. “The developmental lab that was scheduled for this production was delayed by 12 working days during the strike. It is difficult to understand how a modest delay in February would impact a run that was scheduled for late October.”

Hopefully you've been practicing your moonwalk, because Michael Jackson's epic career is getting the Broadway treatment.
On Tuesday, The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage announced that a new musical based on the life of the King of Pop is coming to the Great White Way. The show has yet to receive a name, but it's expected to arrive in 2020 and is being written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage. Since the American playwright's past work includes Sweat and Ruined - two gritty dramas that expertly explore subjects like war, poverty, and the lives of marginalized people - we can expect a nuanced and potentially darker take on Jackson's iconic life and career. Then again, with the Michael Jackson Estate's heavy involvement with the show, it will be interesting to see which controversial moments from the pop star's life Nottage is able to tackle, if any.

Get ready to moonwalk, folks! It looks like the legacy of the late Michael Jackson is being memorialized on Broadway. While few details are known at this time, including the name of the show, there are a few exciting things worth noting! "The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage have partnered to develop a musical inspired by the pop icon; the show is expected to bow in New York in 2020," Playbill announced on Wednesday, June 20. In addition to a projected date, the musical — which will include a number of Michael’s greatest hits — will be written by two-time Pulitzer Prize Winner Lynn Nottage, who is best known for Sweat and Ruined. Christopher Wheeldon of An American in Paris fame has also "been tapped" to direct and choreograph, Playbill noted. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) This wouldn’t be the first time that the King of Pop’s musical catalog was used on stage.

The Michael Jackson estate and Columbia Stage are developing a musical based on the King of Pop’s catalog, adding one more jukebox show to the Broadway boards.
Lynn Nottage, a Pulitzer Prize winner for her plays Ruined and Sweat, will write the show’s book. The choreography and direction will be handled by Christopher Wheeldon, a Tony Award winner for An American in Paris.
The project adds to a growing roster of jukebox musicals hitting Broadway of late. The past season brought shows built on the music of Jimmy Buffett and Donna Summer. Upcoming are shows based on the Go-Gos and Cher. Possible Broadway entries are in the offing for the Temptations, Tina Turner and Alanis Morrissette. A Bob Dylan-based show has an Off-Broadway run set for the fall.

Set in a time of post-War optimism, An American In Paris does feel like it’s locked in time. Though the musical’s tagline hints at a “timeless” story, the heart of its charm lies in its old-school texture. Consciously throwing back to the aura of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Christopher Wheeldon’s re-imagination of the 1951 Gene Kelly film is evidently enamoured with its surroundings. As a result, you feel transported to a different era when watching the musical play out. Indeed, the musical hinges on the joys of escapism.

2018 Olivier Awards nominations: ‘Hamilton’ lands record 13, ‘The Ferryman’ leads among plays with 8
Two years after sweeping the Tony Awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s musical “Hamilton” is poised to do the same at the British equivalent, the Olivier Awards. On March 6, it reaped a record 13 bids for these top theater prizes, shattering the record set by the musical “Hairspray” in 2008 and equalled by the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” last year. On the play side, the leading contender is Jez Butterworth‘s “The Ferryman,” a dark drama about the Irish troubles which is set to come to Broadway in the fall.
Winners will be announced in a ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 8 hosted by Catherine Tate. Unlike the Tony Awards, which are showcased live on CBS, the Olivier Awards get only a clips package on ITV later that evening and a live feed on BBC Radio 2.

"Not too bad, if I say so myself..." If I may take a quote from this year's Best Musical winner as I went 20/24 with my predictions for this year's 2015 Tony Awards. Undoubtedly, the two big winners of the night were the musical Fun Home and the play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, both of which took home five awards including honors for their leading men, directors, and, of course, Best Musical/Play. Right behind those two was the revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, which picked up four awards, including Best Revival and for their long overdue leading lady Kelli O'Hara, who easily gave the best speech of the night (including dancing off the stage). I may predicted Tony co-host Kristin Chenoweth over her, but I am so happy to be wrong. yt id="MneMh2c-y0M" width="640" And what about Chenoweth...
