There are countless podcasts that strike a contrarian pose or promise a mind-expanding journey; few fulfill the promise. But Psychoactive, a new podcast on drugs hosted by Ethan Nadelmann, delivers — in spades.
Nadelmann founded, and for decades ran, the Drug Policy Alliance, an anti-Drug War nonprofit, before stepping down in 2017. (Rolling Stone profiled Nadelmann as he helped lead the battle to legalize marijuana in the 2013.) After a few years of quiet and reflection, Nadelmann is back with an ambitious project to lead a deep and challenging national conversation about drugs and the human experience.

Most movies produced independently hit theaters after they find a distributor, unless they’re self-released. But “Dying to Know,” a documentary narrated by Robert Redford,” is going to have it both ways. Abramorama has acquired the U.S. theatrical rights to the film after its initial grassroots screenings.
The doc focuses on former Harvard psychology professors Richard Alpert and Timothy Leary. A historical biopic that director-producer Gay Dillingham first began working on in 1995, the film chronicles the lives of the longtime friends and icons of the U.S. counterculture movement, both of whom were dismissed from Harvard in 1963 for researching and experimenting with psychedelic drugs including LSD.
After being fired, Alpert traveled to India to become a renowned spiritual teacher, changing his name to Ram Dass and writing the hugely popular book “Be Here Now” about spirituality, yoga and meditation. Leary became an LSD advocate who was famously called “the...

Don Lattin’s group biography The Harvard Psychedelic Club: How Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Huston Smith, And Andrew Weil Killed The Fifties And Ushered In A New Age For America follows would-be gurus Leary, Weil, Smith, and Richard Alpert (later Ram Dass) from Ivy League psychedelic drug trials to the New Age lecture circuit. But the zonked-out subject matter is cut with flat, functional prose and sometimes jarring value judgments that sound as if they’re pasted in from another book. Had Lattin settled for regurgitating Leary’s autobiography Flashbacks, the whole exercise might have come off like a square ...

Health-care is currently the biggest political issue affecting America, with Obama proposing a change for affordable, universal health-care. Author Andrew Weil, M.D.'s new book, "Why Our Health Matters," is a timely and extremely relevant exploration of the health-care crisis and how it can change.
In the book, Dr. Weil delves into the root of the problem of the current health-care crisis in America which has led it to place 37th in a rank of health-care outcomes in terms of infant mortality, longevity, and rates of chronic disease in a survey from the World Health Organization.
Dr. Weil also reveals information on the state of medical education in America, the power of insurance and pharmaceutical companies, and even myths and truths about the healthcare industry.
"I wrote 'Why Our Health Matters' because I care very much about health, about my profession, and about my country," said Dr. Weil about his new book.

If I were to pick one commercial genre that I can't stand it's the pharmaceutical genre. Why do we even have commercials for Lipitor or Celexa or Flomax? The ads are always telling us to "Ask our doctor" about a certain medication.
You know what? I trust my doctor to know that, if I have a particular medical problem he's going to know what treatment is best for me and which treatment I should avoid. It just seems bizarre to me (and doctors I know) that there are commercials on TV for prescription medicine, as if we are knowledgeable enough about it to make a connection to a health problem we have.Continue reading Dr. Andrew Weil doesn't like medicine commercials
