Cologne, Germany -- Christian Wegner, head of production for ProSiebenSat.1, has taken on extra duties at the Pan-European broadcaster, having been named to the new post of chief strategy officer.
Wegner's new brief will include advising CEO Thomas Eberling on the individual divisions at ProSieben "with respect to growth, profitability and optimization of the company's portfolio," the company said Thursday.
In other words, Wegner is ProSieben's new ax man. The broadcaster has announced it will chop €100 million ($137 million) from its budget this year and Wegner will be on the front line of those cutbacks.
So far, ProSieben insists it will not cut back on acquisitions, but instead look for cost savings in-house. Competitor Rtl just outbid ProSieben for a major rights package with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution but ProSieben says losing Warner will not impact its overall acquisition budget.
