Sony Pictures initially planned spin-off films featuring Spider-Man villains after the release of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014), but scrapped the idea due to its reception. In February 2015, Sony entered a collaboration with Marvel Studios to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
This partnership resulted in the release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Concurrently, Sony independently produced “Venom” (2018) and its sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), as well as “Morbius” (2022), all of which featured connections to the MCU through mid-credits scenes.
Upon the release of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which featured Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, MCU fans interpreted their appearance as a hopeful sign for their potential return to more permanent roles.
However, recent rumors suggest otherwise. According to the latest speculation, Sony is contemplating the return of both actors but not within the MCU. Allegedly, Sony has devised its own...

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s entry into the MCU was one of those iconic moments in superhero cinema, that Sony badly wants to recreate. If it were up to them, the Tom Rothman-led studio would have reunited the three heroes once again in the hopes of making another $2 billion phenomenon. Marvel’s constant objection to this plan may have forced Sony to consider another option for Maguire and Garfield.

The MCU flicks may not impress moviegoers that much anymore, but they still have a chance to get some hype from online viewers, however bad they might initially be.
Marvel’s recent big failure, Madame Web, surely didn’t have its best time during the theatrical run back in February, but it seems to be in a much better position now that the movie made its way to Netflix a couple of weeks ago.
As expected, Madame Web’s poor reviews and underperformance in the box office didn’t stop it from getting into the streaming’s top 10 chart quite soon after the digital release.
According to the latest data provided by FlixPatrol, Madame Web is holding a second place at Netflix’s top, competing only with the Blake Lively starrer comedy thriller A Simple Favour that to-date is the streaming’s most-watched movie.

Madame Web finds a huge audience on Netflix, proving people can never look away from a dumpster fire
It’s safe to say that Madame Web was a bit of a disaster; not only did the Marvel movie get absolutely eviscerated by critics, but it was also a certified box office bomb, grossing just $100.3 million worldwide. That said, sometimes it’s hard to look away from a disaster, and I suspect that’s why audiences have been flocking to Madame Web now that it’s streaming on Netflix.
Madame Web has made it to Netflix’s Top Ten list for the week of May 13-19, taking the top spot on the U.S. chart. As for the global chart, the film is sitting pretty at second place, just behind Mother of the Bride. The film has been viewed 10.8 million times during that period, which equates to 20.8 million viewing hours. Judging by the reaction on social media, most are curious to see if the movie really is as bad...

In a move that may come as a relief to some but a surprise to others, Sony has reportedly canceled another Spider-Man-related project. After the Spider-Man spinoff Silk from Amazon became the center of controversy at the streamer, and Madame Web tanked badly at the box office, Sony allegedly decided to shelve the project.

While some fans lament the cancellation of Silk, others believe it’s essential to consider Sony’s recent track record and the potential benefits of this move. Considering back-to-back box office disappointments and disastrous projects under the banner, netizens believe Sony’s decision might be a smart move.

"Madame Web," released on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, frustrated audiences everywhere with its bizarre scripting, its lack of action, its weirdly unmotivated villain, and its staunch refusal to depict its lead characters actually turning into the superheroines they were destined to become. The title character was Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) a New York paramedic in 2003 who discovers she has clairvoyant powers. She traces the origin of her powers back to her birth in the Amazon rainforests, where a rare, mystical spider bit her pregnant mother. Her powers also bring her inexplicably into the company of three New York teenagers who will all become Spider-Women someday -- but not in this film.
Chasing the quartet is Spider-Man (Tahar Rahim), or rather an evil precursor to Spider-Man who has the same super-strength, the same costume, the same wall-crawling powers, and who shares Madame Web's talent for clairvoyance. He has seen a...

Is it time to #RestoreTheMadameWebVerse?
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, we doubt it, but Madame Web is proving to be a hit on Netflix. After debuting on the streaming service earlier this week, Sony's Marvel Comics adaptation has hit #1 on the streamer's "Top 10 Movies" list.
Were people just curious to see how bad it really is or did fans who watched Madame Web in theaters simply want to relive those many meme-worthy moments? We don't know. Either way, it's led to the movie being a hit on Netflix!

Dakota Johnson rose to prominence in the Fifty Shades trilogy and captured audiences’ interest as an actress. She has gone on to star in small-budget indie darlings such as Our Friend, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Cha Cha Real Smooth, and The Lost Daughter. The actress recently transitioned into the superhero genre with Madame Web.

Unfortunately, the film turned out to be mediocre and a big box office bomb. Marvel fans deemed it one of the worst entries in the franchise, and they have mocked several unintentionally funny moments in the film. Madame Web always had a steep hill to climb after becoming meme-fodder immediately after the release of its first (and only) trailer, but right from the opening scene with Cassie's mother in the Amazon researching spiders just before she died, it was clear that Sony Pictures' latest Ssu movie was... probably not going to be a big hit.
To be fair, Madame Web did end up surpassing (just about) the $100 million mark worldwide, but with a reported budget of around $80 - $100 million, and an abysmal 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, we can't imagine seeing much more from Miss Web and her teenage Spider-Women pals anytime soon.
Some felt the movie wasn't quite as bad as it was made out to be, while others were of the opinion that it crossed into so bad it's good territory.

When Madame Web hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, movie audiences met Cassandra Webb for the first time, and they were forever changed. On its surface, the film tells the story of a public servant drawn to the ultimate public service — clairvoyant superheroism. At heart, it’s a tale of failure, friendship, and ultimately redemption.
Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web is the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, and it’s now streaming on Netflix. With all the harsh criticism that Marvel has faced within the last several months, it seems like the overall backlash wasn’t enough for the superhero giant.
Trying to expand their already vast enough universes to deal with accusations of lack of creativity, the MCU had indeed high hopes for its Spider-Man-ish new installment Madame Web starring Hollywood’s big stars like Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney.
Though the movie still was completely crushed by a record number of critics and moviegoers, Madame Web might have a chance to be reconsidered as the superhero film is set to soon arrive on Netflix.

Netflix is an amazing place because its library boasts not only its originals, but also licensed movies and shows that people either didn't have the motivation or the opportunity to watch before. Not all of these movies and TV shows become smash hits, or even get rediscovered — a bad project usually stays bad, except for the extra views. Still, a Netflix subscription is a great way to watch something you didn't want to spend a movie ticket on.
Sony's Spider-Man Universe films are particularly notable in this regard. Following Netflix's exclusive deal with Sony in 2021, a number of films, including Ssu, have found their way to the streaming service sometime after their theatrical release.
Now, the critically and commercially disappointing Madame Web is coming to Netflix's library, and it's happening much sooner than originally expected. Let's take a look at which regions and when the movie will be available for streaming on Netflix.

Madame Web should have been a game-changer for Sony Pictures. While Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage were box office hits, neither received overly glowing reviews and the awful Morbius left any possible goodwill fans had for the studio bleeding out on the floor.
With Madame Web billed as a standalone adventure and a movie that finally put the spotlight on some of the heroes from Spider-Man's world, it looked like the stage was being set for a new female-led superhero franchise. Three Spider-Women swinging into the action under the watchful eye of Cassandra Webb seemed like a genius move, but when it hit theaters...well, you know the rest.

Spider-Man finally made his cameo in X-Men ’97. The web-slinger was seen in the latest episode of the X-Men revival, swinging through New York City, as Magneto’s global Emp shut down the power grids of the world, plunging humanity into the dark ages and depowering every Prime Sentinel in the world.

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th (you can watch the teaser Here), and we have previously seen a picture of a Xenomorph from the film – in fact, that’s the image featured above this paragraph. Now USA Today has shared another image of an Alien: Romulus Xenomorph, and you can check that one out at the bottom of this article. It has been said that Álvarez was dedicated to using practical effects on this film (we’ve even seen him playing with a remote controlled Facehugger), so it’s nice to see glimpses of these creatures that actually existed on the set.

Madame Web arrived in theaters earlier this year and is seemingly destined to go down as one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, it earned only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, making it a critical and commercial flop Sony won't easily recover from. Of course, it's too late now to change its 2024 slate as Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter are fast approaching.
Box office numbers like the ones above confirm the vast majority of fans and regular moviegoers didn't bother seeing Madame Web on the big screen, but you'll soon be able to watch it at home... provided you have a Netflix subscription.

If you never caught Madame Web in theaters (I certainly wouldn’t blame you) but still want to check out the box office and critical disaster, you might be interested to know that the film will be coming to Netflix on May 14th.
Madame Web was a bit of a disaster, which is a shame for any project that people worked hard on, but you’ve got to wonder what type of movie the creative team had originally envisioned. While there was potential there, the final result wasted every opportunity. You had Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor as three different Spider-Women… except we never really get to see this in action beyond a few glimpses into the future. Toss in some bewildering dialogue and subpar action, and you’re just left scratching your head.
Madame Web star Dakota Johnson later slammed the movie, saying she would never do anything like it again.

Last month, 20th Century Studios unveiled a teaser trailer for Alien: Romulus, director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise that is set to reach theatres on August 16th. (You can watch the teaser Here.) With the release date still four months away, it might be a little while before we see a full trailer – but while we wait for that to come along, star Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) is building the hype by promising that the film will deliver everything fans want to see.
Spaeny told CinePOP, “I don’t think I can say much, but I already delivered something, so I’ll just repeat it. It takes place between Alien and Aliens, in terms of plot and chronology. But we have an incredible cast, some new faces. The Facehuggers are there. You will get everything you want from the film. Fede Alvarez is an incredible director who has...

Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote, Venom, will hit the silver screen again later this year. The monstrous bond between humans and the extraterrestrial life form first slithered its way into the hearts of audiences in 2018.
A still from Venom
The wide fanfare of the movie spawned a trilogy. The third and final movie, “Venom: The Last Dance” will be released in October this year. The movie was earlier slated for a November release but had to shift its schedule for one obvious reason.

Just a few months ago, we all saw Madame Web crash and burn in theatres. It wasn’t as meme-worthy as Morbius, but it was another fascinating misfire in Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent cinematic universe. Now that dumpster fire is coming to home video.
For those of us who like to punish ourselves with bad movies, we’ll have a chance to bring Madame Web home on April 30. The Sj Clarkson-directed “film” will be available on 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD. Surprisingly, the discs will have some bonus features.

Tom Holland ventured into the entertainment business at a young age. Before transitioning to film, he built a career in theatre. His first significant stage role was the titular character in the West End production of the coming-of-age musical Billy Elliot the Musical in 2008. He previously starred as the best friend of the protagonist.
Tom Holland in The Crowded Room
The turning point in Holland’s acting career came in 2012 when he worked with Naomi Watts in the disaster drama film The Impossible. Three years later, he had his breakthrough in Hollywood with his portrayal of Peter Parker and his alter-ego Marvel superhero Spider-Man.
It is a role that he has played numerous times. While fans do not seem to have gotten enough of the actor in the Spidey suit, recent Madame Web concept art featuring him is not something they seemed to be eager about.

You know your movie’s a failure when it’s been bested by Morbius, but that’s where Madame Web has found itself. The critically panned movie is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, a franchise which doesn’t seem to include the web-slinger, but some recently released Madame Web concept art does feature Tom Holland’s Spider-Man battling Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahims).
Concept artist Sebastian Meyer, who has worked on movies such as Doctor Strange, Star Trek Beyond, Aquaman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and more, revealed a series of Madame Web illustrations, some of which include Spider-Man.
You can check out the rest of Meyer’s wonderful Madame Web concept art on his site. Of course, Spider-Man didn’t appear in Madame Web, but it was once rumoured that Sony wanted to include the character.

Rolling Stone UK’s latest cover features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 33, who is set to have a busy final few months in 2024. In addition to playing the lead in Sony’s superhero film Kraven the Hunter (opening in theaters on August 30), he will be joining Bill Skarsgård in the horror movie Nosferatu, helmed by Robert Eggers (releasing on December 25).
Oh, did we mention he also has a supporting role in David Leitch’s flick The Fall Guy, which will arrive on May 3? Recently, the actor has been in the news for his fervent promotion of the upcoming Sony project, Kraven the Hunter. However, it appears that his efforts are falling flat with fans, as he employs the same trope that audiences have grown tired of.

While Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web brought a new low to the Sony Spider-Man Universe, fans still have the Aaron Taylor-Johnson starrer Kraven The Hunter as well as Tom Hardy’s Venom: The Last Dance to see if the Ssu is worth anything. Fans were not ready for a film to be worse than the meme-worthy Morbius, but Madame Web played to win in that competition.
However, Taylor-Johnson has assured fans that Kraven The Hunter is good and worth exploring in the cinemas. The Bullet Train star mentioned how the film was different from the usual franchise fare that audiences were used to and that he would not have chosen to work on it if the film did not have any potential.

When it comes to being an actor, it is known that those in the business would have to pay their dues. Sometimes studio politics means playing the game in order to get to the better stuff. The phrase that’s usually said is “one for them” — meaning you just take a job just to show you are a team player. And Syndey Sweeney is attributing her role in the infamous Madame Web to be exactly that. After Sony attempted to expand their Spider-Man property, only to get caught in its own web, which let audiences prey on it, it was recently given a mercy release on digital.

‘To me, that film was a building block,’ says Sydney Sweeney of the much-maligned comic book movie, Madame Web.
Considering she’s just starred in the film that will probably be remembered as 2024’s least loved movie, Sydney Sweeney seems to have deftly sidestepped any negativity emanating from Madame Web's dismal reception.
How so? Well, her breakout rom-com Anyone But You is still playing in cinemas, a pretty amazing feat considering that the film debuted at the tail-end of last year. That movie is proving to have real legs, and although Sweeney may have followed it with a supporting appearance in Sony’s maligned Spider-Man spin-off, she’s quickly following Madame Web with Immaculate, a fun take on the convent horror genre in which she plays a nun subjected to all kinds of peril throughout the film’s zippy runtime.

Sydney Sweeney is looking at the positive side of starring in Sony-Marvel’s Madame Web despite the negativity surrounding the film.
Although the superhero film failed to attract numbers at the box office, the Euphoria star talked about the importance of being part of that production.
“To me, that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there,” she said in an interview with GQ. “Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.”
Since the Madame Web trailer’s debut, social media has poked fun at the movie for a line Dakota Johnson’s Cassie says that gives a quick backstory of the film’s villain.

These fans have hopeful news that the actress can still return to her role in a Spider-Man film.

After crashing and burning at the box office, becoming the subject of multiple jokes at its expense during the Academy Awards, and even driving its own main star to completely disassociate herself from anything to do with it, "Madame Web" admirably lived up to its billing as 2024's heir apparent to the "Morbius" debacle. These sorts of high-profile flops don't come around very often, even as the superhero bubble seems to have well and truly burst in recent years, so I'm being sincere when I say I hope we all thoroughly enjoyed the phenomenon of society coming together to good-naturedly clown on one misguided movie in particular.
But the fun doesn't have to end just yet! "Madame Web" might as well be the movie that the term "guilty pleasure" was invented for, based on /Film's rather tepid review by Witney Seibold, so we all have yet another chance to experience...

Sydney Sweeney isn’t taking a break anytime soon, as she revealed that she’s finally heading back to the Euphoria set to start filming season three.
During a recent interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, the actress was asked if she was planning “to take a little time off after all this madness” following a busy past year with Anyone But You, Madame Web, and Immaculate press tours.
But Sweeney informed Horowitz that next on her plate is filming for the next season of Sam Levinson’s hit HBO series. “I go into Euphoria,” she noted.
However, she wouldn’t confirm an exact date or if she’s seen any scripts yet when asked, adding, “Maybe. I don’t know.” But Sweeney said she is excited to reunite with the cast for the highly anticipated third season.
“I always feel like I go home,” she said of the series.

The idea, at least in theory, sounds impressive, and in the comment section of the video that leaked the idea behind the game, fans can be seen lamenting that the game will possibly never be released.
