Update 21/05/24: As confirmed on the latest edition of Richard Osman and Marina Hyde’s The Rest is Entertainment podcast, the latest cast member to be confirmed is Celia Imrie in the role of Joyce Meadowcroft. Joyce would love that, we feel.
As previously reported by Variety in April 2024, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley and Pierce Brosnan are also attached to The Thursday Murder Club film adaptation, which is being directed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone director Chris Columbus. Mirren will of course play former spy Elizabeth, Kingsley will play psychiatrist Ibrahim, and in something of a casting curveball, Pierce Brosnan will play former union organiser Ron. That just leaves police officers Donna and Chris, and handyman/fixer Bogdan as main characters still to be announced.

A feast for the eyeballs! That’s what the UK’s new TV drama (British shows returning for another series this year are here) output looks like for 2024 – a year of thrills, chills and laughs, from supernatural escapism to immersive historical dramas, true stories brought to life, and plenty to feed Britain’s crime mystery obsession.
Here’s a flavour of what 2024 holds for your TV: book adaptations include a new imagining of Ian Rankin’s Rebus detective stories coming to the BBC, a scandalous adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s iconic novel Rivals (starring David Tennant), Jack Thorne’s take on Lord of the Flies, and much much more.
There’s high-stakes action in thrillers like Red Eye, Black Doves and Nightsleeper, and you can transport yourself back in time to discover the lives of a notorious eighties jewel thief in Joan, sinister Jacobean power play in Mary and George,...

The age rating for the 1964 “Mary Poppins” has been increased in the U.K. due to “discriminatory language.”
On Friday, the British Board of Film Classification upped the Disney movie’s cinema rating from U, meaning it contained “no material likely to offend or harm,” to PG for “discriminatory language.”
In a statement to Variety, a BBFC spokesperson said that the film “includes two uses of the discriminatory term ‘hottentots’. While ‘Mary Poppins’ has a historical context, the use of discriminatory language is not condemned, and ultimately exceeds our guidelines for acceptable language at U. We therefore classified the film PG for discriminatory language.”
The word is a racially insensitive term for the Khoekhoe, an indigenous group in South Africa. The BBFC further explained that the word is used in the film by Admiral Boom (Reginald Owen), including when referring to the chimney sweeps whose faces are covered in soot.

U.K.-based film production and distribution company Sovereign is expanding across the Atlantic with the launch of a distribution arm in the U.S.
With a plan to release two to three titles a year theatrically and across VOD platforms, the first film slated for release from the new entity is Laurent Nègre’s World War II thriller “A Forgotten Man,” which Sovereign also produced. Set in 1945 after the surrender of Nazi Germany, the story follows the Swiss ambassador (played by Michael Neuenschwander) after he leaves Berlin, but finds himself haunted by his past.
The film, which recently had its U.S. premiere at the Miami Jewish Film Festival and first bowed in Zurich, was released in the U.K. by Sovereign with support from the Swiss Confederation and Swiss Films. Its U.S. release is now slated for April.
Andreas Roald, who first founded Sovereign in 2008, and the head of U.

As Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), and Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) have proven in recent years, there is ample precedent for performers to earn Oscar nominations despite snubs at the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards. Indeed, 18 such instances have occurred since 2002, the first year that all four precursor prizes were preceded by official nominations.
Over the last 22 years, each of the four acting Oscar categories has produced at least three out-of-the-blue bids. However, none of the performers who overcame their four earlier snubs managed to clinch the gold and instead had to settle for being Oscar finalists.
It’s worth noting that Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids, albeit in 2001 when there were no Critics Choice nominations. The four precursor trophies were evenly distributed among her Oscar competitors: Judi Dench, Kate Hudson,...

There is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Last year, Andrea Riseborough became the latest Oscar contender to come out of nowhere when she reaped a Best Actress bid for “To Leslie.”
She joined a roster of 23 other performers who heard their names on Oscar nominations morning despite being repeatedly overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar.
(Note: Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids. However, that was in 2001, the year before the Critics Choice introduced nominations. Frances McDormand won with that group for both “Almost Famous” and “Wonder Boys,” Kate Hudson took home the Globe for “Almost Famous” and Judi Dench prevailed at SAG for “Chocolat.

Ever since “The Holdovers” premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, 21-year-old Dominic Sessa has steadily attracted heaps of praise for his debut performance as one of its central characters. Despite earning recognition from some critics groups, he now unfortunately sits as a BAFTA longlist contender with no other key industry precursor bids. However, there is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards.
Below, we list the 24 performers who pulled off Oscar nominations surprises after being overlooked earlier in awards season. Who doesn't love Paddington, the cuddly bear who emigrated from darkest Peru all the way to the bustling streets of London in search of a new home and an adoring family to take him in? Based on the immensely popular children's books by the late author Michael Bond, with the main character voiced to perfection by actor Ben Whishaw, "Paddington" becoming a live-action franchise was just about the biggest no-brainer of a decision any studio ever had to make. It paid off big time when the 2014 movie released to overwhelmingly positive reviews and led to a sequel three years later that inspired even more rapturous reactions -- one that inspired many a seasoned movie-watching veteran to throw around the M-word (masterpiece!) with complete and utter sincerity. Everyone, even the most stubborn and cold-hearted grump, comes around on Paddington eventually!

And now we know he'll be back on UK screens next year.

Break out the marmalade. After much back and forth over whether or not it would happen, “Paddington in Peru” (aka “Paddington 3”) is now most definitely happening, with the threequel set to begin shooting in July. Deadline was first to report the news. Per the outlet, director Dougal Wilson is set to begin filming on July 24.
Commercials director turned first-time feature filmmaker Wilson takes the reins from franchise director Paul King, who directed 2015’s “Paddington” and 2017’s “Paddington 2.”
“After 10 years of working on the ‘Paddington’ movies, I feel absurdly protective of the little bear, and I’m delighted that Dougal will be there to hold his paw as he embarks on his third big-screen adventure,” King said in a statement. “Dougal’s work is never less than astounding: funny, beautiful, heartfelt, imaginative, and totally original. Aunt Lucy once asked us to ‘Please Look After This Bear.’ I know Dougal will do so admirably.

Paddington fans can rest easy... because filming on a second sequel has now been given a date.
While a third movie based around the adventures of Paddington Bear, was announced back in 2016, recent reports had suggested the project was stuck in development limbo.
Speaking to Collider earlier this year, Paddington voice actor Ben Whishaw claimed: “I haven’t read this script and I don’t even know when we’re due to shoot it. I don’t know. I thought it would be happening by now, but I don’t know. It’s gone silent in the way that sometimes these things do.
“Maybe that just means they’re still working on it, or maybe it means it’s not happening, or you just don’t know.”
The previous film in the franchise, the enthusiastically praised Paddington 2, was released back in 2017.

Exclusive: Make that a triple marmalade sandwich. Long-awaited movie threequel Paddington In Peru is on course to start production on July 24, we can reveal.
It has been six years since the second film in the hit franchise and the brown bear is keeping plot details for the third instalment under his famous red hat for now, but as the title suggests, the movie will see Paddington getting into sticky situations in “deepest, darkest Peru”, his country of birth.
The third film will reunite producer Studiocanal, which is once again fully financing, with Heyday, producers of the first two movies as well as the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies.
Story comes from Paddington 1 & 2 collaborators Paul King, Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton with a screenplay by Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamont. As previously announced, music videos and commercials director Dougal Wilson is making his feature debut.

Once the British film academy showered “All Quiet on the Western Front” with seven BAFTA Awards, it became difficult to imagine that there would be much overlap between its 2022 honorees and the subsequent Oscar winners. Although they lauded its film editing, the Brits otherwise overlooked industry juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which, as expected, proved to be an Academy Awards magnet. In the end, the two organizations only agreed on a handful of below-the-line wins, while their top eight category results were completely different for the first time since the BAFTAs became an Oscar precursor more than two decades ago.
At last month’s BAFTA Awards, which took place exactly three weeks before the Oscars, the above-the-line categories were dominated by “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” with three wins each. The former took the top prize of Best Picture and was honored for its directing and adapted screenplay,...

Idris Elba has said it is “stupid” for people to criticise him for his decision to stop describing himself as a “Black actor”.
In an interview last month to promote his new Luther movie, the star, 50, had discussed the topic of race.
“As humans, we are obsessed with race,” he had told Esquire. “And that obsession can really hinder people’s aspirations, hinder people’s growth. Racism should be a topic for discussion, sure. Racism is very real. But from my perspective, it’s only as powerful as you allow it to be.
“I stopped describing myself as a Black actor when I realised it put me in a box. We’ve got to grow. We’ve got to. Our skin is no more than that: it’s just skin. Rant over.”
The remarks, which Elba caveated by saying “Of course, I’m a member of the Black community”, provoked much debate on social media.

The joke writers at Have I Got News for You have shared a brutal dig following the publishing of Matt Hancock’s WhatsApp messages.
On Thursday (2 March), the former health secretary broke his silence after messages were leaked to the Daily Telegraph by Isabel Oakeshott, the journalist who helped him write his pandemic memoir.
Hancock stated that he was “hugely disappointed” by what he said was a “massive betrayal and breach of trust”.
A post on the official Twitter account of the BBC comedy show Have I Got News for You on Thursday took aim at Hancock over the scandal.

Dan Walker has branded Piers Morgan “bitter” and a “numptie” after the TalkTV presenter accused him of “milking” his recent bike crash.

Ahead of the comedy-drama’s final series premiere on 26 March, HBO released the official trailer, which teases rising tensions between Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) and their father Logan (Brian Cox).
After Logan ruthlessly cut off his children from the family’s global media empire at the end of season three, season four picks up right where things left off.
The trailer opens with Logan listing off his recent victories to his personal assistant. “I’ve got plenty on my plate,” he gloats.
It then cuts to the children scheming up a plan.
“We were cut out behind our backs,” Kendall tells his two siblings, before proposing partnerships with Logan’s...

Dame Julie Walters has been forced to leave the cast of the forthcoming Channel 4 drama Truelove, due to ill health.
The veteran star of stage and screen, 73, was diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer in 2018.
In 2020, she gave an interview in which she revealed that she had got the all-clear and said that she felt like a “different person” after having cancer.
Walters’ role as Phil in the drama Truelove was set to be her return to TV after a seven-year hiatus (she was last seen in the acclaimed 2016 Channel 4 drama National Treasure).
Walters will be replaced on the show by Lindsay Duncan, who now stars opposite The Wire’s Clarke Peters.
The pair play former teenage sweethearts who reunite at a friend’s funeral after many years, and make a pact to help each other experience dignified deaths, rather than slow declines.

Exclusive: Julie Walters has pulled out of Clarke Peters-starring Channel 4 drama Truelove due to ill health and is being replaced by Lindsay Duncan.
Truelove creators Charlie Covell (The End of The F***ing World) and Iain Weatherby (Humans), who spoke to Deadline at length about the upcoming BBC Studios-distributed show from The End of The F***ing World producer Clerkenwell Films, said they were “saddened” by the loss of Walters but “with her blessing, Lindsay has joined and we are both huge admirers.”
Filming will recommence in Bristol later this year, around nine months after the drama was put on ice due to Walters suffering from severe back pain. All cast members, including Peters, have agreed to return.
“Last year, filming on Truelove was paused while Julie Walters sought medical advice and attention for severe back pain,” said a Clerkenwell Films statement.
