Norby Walters, the onetime music agent who ran the annual “Night of 100 Stars” Oscar party for years and hosted an iconic low-stakes poker party for actors, died December 12. He was 91. His son, Walters Media Group founder and former Bold Films CEO Gary Michael Walters, confirmed the news but did not provide details.
Born Norbert Meyer, in 1952 Walters started booking jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz into his father’s bar.
Walters and his brother, Walter took over a place from their father and dubbed it Norby & Walter’s Bel Air, but its sign had no ampersand — which led to the name Walters would use during his career. He later took over a failing nightclub located next to the world-famous Copacabana, dubbed it Norby Walters’s Supper Club, and attracted a who’s who of boldfaced New York City names.
“What was I going to do?...

Producer/financier Bold Films made its mark in recent years with critical and commercial indie hits like “Whiplash,” “Drive” and “Nightcrawler.” Its co-founders — Russian-born entrepreneur, chairman and backer Michel Litvak and CEO Gary Michael Walters — hope to achieve similar results with the just-released art-house drama “Colette,” pictured above, and A24’s recent pickup “Vox Lux” (out Dec. 7). But after some low-budget misfires and downsizing, the company is looking to take bigger gambles. Variety spoke with Walters to discuss Bold’s new direction.
How are you planning to change the company’s approach?
We’ll be looking into getting domestic distribution earlier in the process, and creating more commercial projects that are going to be attractive as wide releases. We’ll give them some edge, but I think of it as the “Mary Poppins” principle: you need a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down. More accessible films, maybe with more action components,...

What might appear to be an homage to David Bowie glitz on its cover, is actually much deeper in Brady Corbet’s Vox Lux which follows the unconventional metamorphosis of a young teenager from school shooting survivor to tortured pop idol.
Similar to how Natalie Portman pulled out all the stops and transformed into a sublime, razor-sharp ballerina for her Oscar-winning role in 2010’s Black Swan, she made certain she was vocally prepped and choreographed before her 10 days of shooting on Vox Lux (the entire film was shot over 22 days). Financing dropped out prior to the pic’s production and delaying its start which provided Portman with extra prep time so she was ready to hit the ground running when filming began.
“It gives you more time when things fall apart, as long as they come back together again,” Portman says.

Neon has landed Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux,” a drama about a troubled pop diva that’s drawing some serious awards buzz for star Natalie Portman. The film premiered to largely favorable reviews at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Several studios were interested in nabbing the project.
It is possible that the indie studio could push “Vox Lux” into theaters this year in order to qualify for Oscars, something it did to great success with “I Tonya,” another Toronto acquisition that went on to score an Academy Award for Allison Janney.
“Vox Lux” fits in with Neon’s strategy of partnering with younger, edgier auteurs. The film is only the second feature for Corbet, who previously directed “The Childhood of a Leader.” Previous Neon releases include “Colossal,” “Beach Rats,” and “Ingrid Goes West.” The studio had an arthouse breakout with “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about triplets separated...

Vox Lux, one of the buzziest acquisition titles here at Toronto, is close to a splashy distribution deal. Neon is in the lead, sources said, for the Brady Corbet-directed film stars Natalie Portman as a female pop star who survives a school shooting and becomes famous writing and performing a tribute song to the victims, but evolves into a broken woman. Jude Law plays her manager, and Raffey Cassidy plays the singer as a teenager. Corbert wrote the script, and Christine Vachon, David Hinojosa, Michel Litvak, and Gary Michael Walters produced. CAA Media Finance and Endeavor Content teamed on an auction chased by two tastemaker distributors — Neon and A24, in pursuit. The film premiered last Friday at the Elgin Theatre.

Two music-themed female driven pics are the hot properties on the Toronto auction block right now, and neither is decided yet. After another wild all night Toronto auction, the Tom Harper-directed Wild Rose is close to a seven figure U.S rights deal with a couple distributors chasing. Neon is out front but others are still in it, said sources close to the deal making.
At the same time, the Natalie Portman-starrer Vox Lux is in serious play, and I’m hearing distributors including A24 and Neon are among the distributors chasing.
Sierra/Affinity is brokering foreign deals on Wild Rose that should reap another $4 million, which is a strong showing for a tiny film. Wild Rose centers around an aspiring Scottish lass from Glasgow who follows her dream to become a Country & Western singer in Nashville. Several sources who saw it at last night’s 9:30 Pm...

“Vox Lux” uses the rise and fall of a self-destructive pop star to analyze the past decade or so of school shootings, economic malaise, and global terrorism. Brady Corbet’s sophomore feature is one of the first works of art to truly contend with the post-Columbine, post-9/11 age of anxiety, as well as the celebrity culture that has played like a soundtrack to this turbulent era.
“As Americans and as citizens of the world, we have endured a lot in our recent history,” Corbet told Variety. “I just think it’s important for everyone who sees this film to think about all we’ve been through and kind of own it. It’s not been a beautiful generation. We’ve been living through an obscene and absurd political system long before Donald Trump came to power.”

Natalie Portman is Celeste, a pop star on the verge of a comeback, in “Vox Lux.” A teaser for the film is out ahead of the film’s North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed and written by Brady Corbet, “Vox Lux” is his followup to his award-winning directorial debut “The Childhood of a Leader.” “Vox Lux” already premiered at the Venice Film Festival, garnering rave reviews.
In the 45-second clip, the roars from a crowd build as, who we can assume is Celeste (Portman), makes her way to the stage two minutes before a performance. Mysterious string music begins playing over the scene as the camera follows Celeste from behind as she heads to what appears to be an important performance.

Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has landed another film project. It's an action comedy called Dogtown and it's based on the long-running comic book series Body Bags. The script for the film is being written by Kyle Ward, who also wrote the script for John Wick: Chapter 2.
The stylized and irreverent comic was created by Jason Pearson. Bautista will take on the role of Mack Delgado, "a professional bounty hunter tough enough to be called a "body bagger." Things take a turn for him when the teenage daughter he never knew he had turns up on his doorstep, hoping to reconnect with the father she lost long ago."
The movie is being produced by Bold Films and producer Gary Michael Walters had this to say in a statement:
"This is our first big graphic novel based action movie, which marks an exciting transition at the company. We are moving into larger budgets,...
