‘Is it autobiographical?’ is usually a question that female novelists can’t escape, but when David Nicholls published One Day in 2009, it also plagued him. Perhaps writing in the romantic genre encouraged interviewers to grant Nicholls honorary-woman status? Lucky him.
One Day is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, whose lives we dip into on the same date each year for a couple of decades. They first meet as students at their Edinburgh University graduation ball in 1988, after which their lives weave in and out of each other’s all the way into their mid-30s. The book was a word-of-mouth hit that was made into a very middling film in 2011, and has since been adapted into a terrific 14-part Netflix series starring This is Going to Hurt’s Ambika Mod and The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall.
Because Emma and Dexter become mildly public figures in the story...

Britain’s Got Talent maker Fremantle has reached an “amicable resolution” with former host David Walliams following the leaked audio that led to his leaving the show.
A Fremantle spokesperson told Pa that the outfit was “sincerely sorry” that Walliams’ “private conversations when a judge on Britain’s Got Talent were published, and the great distress this caused David.” Fremantle label Thames has produced the show with Simon Cowell’s Syco since its inception in 2007 and it is one of ITV’s most popular.
“We have reviewed our production practices on the show to ensure they fully respect the expectations of our talent whilst satisfying the requirements of the show,” added Fremantle. “We thank David for being an important part of the Britain’s Got Talent family and the enduring success of the show and hope to have opportunities to work with him in the future.”

Little Britain, David Walliams and Matt Lucas’ anarchic noughties sketch show, is causing trouble again.
Research by UK media regulator Ofcom found that viewers were shocked that an “explicitly racist” scene from the BBC comedy was available to stream on iPlayer.
Ofcom, via polling company Ipsos, showed 115 people the Little Britain sketch as part of a study into audience expectations on potentially offensive content across linear TV and streaming services.
The scene involved Linda Flint, a university counselor played by Walliams, describing student Kenneth Lao as having “yellowish skin, slight smell of soy sauce … the ching-chong China man.”
First broadcast in 2004, the sketch featured in episode two of Little’s Britain‘s second season and is currently available to view on iPlayer.

Exclusive: David Walliams’ lawsuit against the producer of Britain’s Got Talent has detailed work, including a Channel 4 show, he claims to have lost after his derogatory remarks about contestants were leaked to the press.
Walliams is suing Fremantle for allegedly breaking data protection laws and breaching his privacy after The Guardian published what he argues were private remarks about people auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent.
The Guardian saw a transcript of comments made by Walliams in 2020. The newspaper said he made the remarks while sitting at the Britain’s Got Talent judges’ table and they included him referring to a pensioner as a “c***.”
In a High Court legal filing seen by Deadline, Walliams claimed that his “reputation and earnings have been severely damaged” as a result of The Guardian’s story.

Former “Britain’s Got Talent” judge David Walliams has filed a lawsuit against Fremantle, the show’s producer, after departing from the series last year amid controversy.
The suit, filed last week, is classified as dealing with data protection, according to the BBC. No further details have been revealed at this time.
The filing comes months after the longtime judge for the ITV show, who has also risen to prominence as an actor, comedian and author, exited the show last November when the Guardian reported that Walliams had made sexually explicit remarks about two contestants, according to a leaked transcript.
The recordings trace back to 2020 taping, during which Walliams allegedly calls one contestant a “c–t” and while referring to another by saying, “she thinks you want to f–k her, but you don’t.”
Following the leak, Walliams apologized for his “disrespectful comments” in a statement, saying “I would like...

David Walliams is suing Britain’s Got Talent maker Fremantle, according to reports.
According to the BBC, the former judge on the ITV talent show has filed in London’s High Court an action listed as dealing with data protection against Fremantle label Thames.
Walliams was a judge on Britain’s Got Talent for 10 years until 2022 but last year a Guardian investigation found that he had made disrespectful comments about two contestants, which were leaked on a transcript. He was heard making explicit remarks about contestants during the recording of an episode of the talent show in January 2020. Thames said at the time they regarded Walliams’ comments as private, but that his use of language was “inappropriate.”

The data protection suit was filed last week.
Walliams parted ways with the show, which airs in the U.K. on ITV, last November after transcripts were leaked to The Guardian newspaper in which he reportedly made a number of derogatory comments about contestants.

Like all truly great TV series, Succession is about a lot of things. It is about generational trauma, ambition, betrayal, self-destruction, family, and capitalism. It is also a show about male predation. While pretty much all of its characters are problematic in some way or another, the concept of specifically male toxicity is ever-present but seldom explored. From Roman Roy’s (Kieran Culkin) unsolicited “dick pic” last season, to the cruiseline rape and murder coverup that simmered in the background of the first three seasons, and Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) affair with his much-younger secretary, Succession has indulged a relentlessly cynical view of sexuality, and of harmful male behaviour. In the character of Lukas Matsson, though, the series may have introduced a whole new type of toxic man.
Matsson, played by Alexander Skarsgård, was introduced last season as an erratic Swedish tech billionaire, interested in buying WayStar RoyCo. Episode five,...

The episode ends with Din formally adopting Grogu as his child, bestowing on him the name of Din Grogu. The pair are given a cabin to live in by Greef Karga (Carl Weathers).
Despite some shocking celebrity cameos, and the emotional return of a past Star Wars actor, the third season of The Mandalorian has received a tepid response from fans, and the finale failed to win many people over.
Released on Disney+ on Wednesday morning (19 April), the episode, titled “Chapter 24: The Return”, brought a number of story arcs to a close.

In a TikTok video posted by a user called @pineappleonpisa, Bieber can be seen standing in the crowd with his eyes seemingly closed as Ocean sang “At Your Best (You Are Love).”
“Not Justin Bieber asleep @ the Frank set,” the TikToker wrote atop the viral clip. “It’s past his bedtime.”
In the comments section, while some fans made fun of Bieber, others agreed that he’s “simply just vibing to Frank Ocean’s music”.
Earlier this week, Bieber defended Ocean’s Coachella performance despite criticism from his fans, arguing the singer’s “artistry is unmatched”.

Succession viewers have joked that a debate stemming from the show’s latest episode is the new version of “the dress”.
HBO’s hit drama is currently airing its fourth and final season, which has already seen plenty of explosive plot moments.
*Succession spoilers below – you have been warned*
After the shocking death of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) in episode three, episode four saw the family dealing with the aftermath and considering what happens to Waystar Royco next.
Only adding to the confusion, Frank (Peter Friedman) produces a document, partially written in pencil and never shown to Logan’s lawyers, suggesting that Kendall (Jeremy Strong) should succeed him.
Kendall’s name has been underlined, but his siblings Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) qucikly point out that the clumsily drawn line could have been Logan crossing it out.

Bill Hader recently received the shocking news of his distant relation to fellow acting legend Carol Burnett.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday 13 April, the Barry star recounted the moment Burnett emailed him informing him that they are distant cousins.
“It’s insane,” Hader recalled. “She emailed me and said, ‘We’re related.’
“And I was like, ‘What?’ and I turned to my daughters and I’m like, ‘We’re related to Miss Hannigan!’”
Burnett, 89, who played the formidable orphanage owner Miss Hannigan in the original 1982 musical film Annie, discovered her bloodline connection with Hader on Finding Your Roots.
The PBS docuseries connects celebrities with Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr, who helps them trace their DNA lineage to learn about their ancestrial history.

Simon Cowell has spoken out for the first time on David Walliams’ departure from Britain’s Got Talent.
Bgt returned for its 16th season over the weekend, with longtime star Cowell reuniting with Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon on the judging panel.
The trio were joined by Bruno Toniolo, who has stepped in to replace Walliams.
Back in January, it was confirmed that the Little Britain star would not be reprising his role as a judge on the reality competition following reports that he had made disrespectful comments about contestants.
A transcript obtained by The Guardian allegedly revealed that Walliams described a woman contestant as being like “the slightly boring girl you meet in the pub that thinks you want to f*** them, but you don’t”.
Walliams apologised for his “disrespectful” comments at the time, stating: “These were private conversations and – like most conversations with friends – were never intended to be shared.

Bruno Tonioli caused quite the scene on his first ever episode of Britain’s Got Talent, after replacing David Walliams on the judging panel.
The former Strictly Come Dancing judge appeared on the show for the first time last night (15 April), having never watched it before.
He is now a regular judge alongside Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell.
Because he’d never seen the ITV show, Tonioli didn’t realise that he was supposed to press his red buzzer to reject hopeful contestants mid-audition. Instead, he did it after they’d finished. “No, you don’t have to do that as well,” Cowell told him, while laughter could be heard from the audience.
Tonioli also pressed his golden buzzer in the middle of an act’s audition (though he was meant to wait until it was finished). This meant that while Ugandan dance troupe Ghetto Kids were still performing,...

George Rr Martin has revealed fresh details about his newly announced Game of Thrones prequel series.
The American author, who is behind the fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire, which was turned into the hit HBO series about feuding noble families, wrote in a blog post that the new adaptation will be based on his novella The Hedge Knight.
The book is about the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, in a period where the Iron Throne is still under Targaryen rule before the events of the original series.
Egg, brother of Aemon Targaryen who became a Maester to the Night’s Watch at Castle Black and appeared in Game of Thrones, would later grow up to become Aegon V.
He is also the grandfather of Aerys II, often referred to as the “Mad King”, who was the ruler of Westeros before King Robert Baratheon.

Bruno Tonioli has praised David Walliams for reaching out with a “class” response after he joined the panel of Britain’s Got Talent.
The former Strictly Come Dancing judge will appear alongside Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell on the judging panel for the new series of the talent competition, which returns this week.
Tonioli replaces Little Britain star Walliams, whose departure was announced in January. Months earlier, Walliams had come under fire after a leaked set recording from 2020 heard the actor and author making sexually explicit comments about a Bgt contestant.
Speaking to the Radio Times, Tonioli said that Walliams had been the first person to congratulate him for joining the show.
“I haven’t seen David, but he was the first person to send me a message saying congratulations,” the Italian choreographer said.
“He also sent a fantastic bottle of Italian wine to my dressing room on my first day.

David Walliams was among those vying for Britain’s spot at the next Eurovision Song Contest in a comedy sketch for the BBC’s Comic Relief broadcast.
After performing “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor in a tight leather suit, judges Graham Norton, Lulu and Sam Ryder declared that Walliams had failed to secure the gig.
Upon hearing their verdict, the comedy actor approached the judge’s table and placed a gold, Britain’s Got Talent buzzer on it.
“Well, you might not have liked it but I loved it,” Walliams said, hitting the buzzer, prompting a stream of confetti to fall around him. “Yes! I’m through to the live Eurovision final!” he declared.

Dawn French was unrecognisable (sort of) as Claudia Winkleman in BBC One’s parody of The Traitors for Comic Relief.
The Vicar of Dibley star donned Winkleman’s trademark black fringe for the sketch as well as one of the star’s giant roll-neck jumpers that gradually enveloped her whole face.
“I’m actually Claudia Winkleman: half woman, half fringe,” French tells the contestants.
“It feels like it’s time to have a discussion,” she continues. “And during that discussion I will be walking round this table incessantly saying creepy stuff and looking absolutely gorgeous.”
In one scene, French parts her fringe using a curtain pulley.
The “contestants” included Alison Hammond, who was just confirmed as Matt Lucas’s replacement on The Great British Bake Off, Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mary Berry, Stephen Merchant, Danny Dyer, Jennifer Saunders and two actual Traitors contestants from season one.

Michael Caine became a nonagenarian this week, turning 90 on March 14th. To celebrate, Michael Caine had himself a little birthday bash, with other than Tom Cruise one of the few good men in attendance.
Comedian David Walliams posted photos from Michael Caine’s birthday on his Instagram, complete with pictures of the birthday boy and Cruise. One even shows what appears to be the lamest birthday cake in history, considering it was made for a knighted, two-time Oscar-winner…You can see the pictures below:

As Michael Caine and Tom Cruise are seated next to each other, we’d have to assume they’re close friends. This might be a bit of a surprise to some, considering the two have never worked on a movie together. Ok, they both have a credit on 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember,...

The 95th Academy Awards had two notable absentees over the weekend: Tom Cruise and James Cameron. “The two guys who insisted we go to the theatre didn’t come to the theatre,” Kimmel joked about the pair’s impassioned push to get people back into the cinemas after the pandemic. What the host said next is probably the reason why Cruise was nowhere to be seen. “Everyone loved Top Gun, everyone! I mean, Tom Cruise with his shirt off in that beach football scene? L Ron hubba hubba,” Kimmel joked, referring to Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard and the controversial religion of which Cruise is an advocate.
Kimmel’s wife, executive producer Molly McNearney, has since said that her husband wouldn’t have made the joke in Cruise’s presence, which is revealing in itself, but for Cruise, why risk it? It’s not like he needs to get more...

The A-lister, who co-starred with Caine in 2002’s Austin Power comedy Goldmember, was pictured at the River Café event in the unlikely company of Denise Welch and David Walliams.
Welch shared a video on her Instagram on Wednesday (15 March) of her telling a dirty joke about Caine to the party’s guests.
The camera pans around to show Caine drinking a glass of red wine while Cruise is in hysterics.

Lionsgate has uploaded a final trailer for My Happy Ending, an indie cancer dramedy from the Israeli filmmakers Tal Granit & Sharon Maymon that the studio will be releasing on VOD starting in April after a small theatrical run in February. We haven't posted this trailer anytime before, so we're catching up with it now. The film stars Andie MacDowell as Julia Roth, joined by Miriam Margolyes, Tom Cullen as the handsome Doctor, Tamsin Greig, Sally Phillips, and David Walliams.
