Erich Von Däniken first popularized the Ancient Astronaut theory way back in 1968 with the release of his controversial Chariots of the Gods?, which suggested that human civilization was influenced by extraterrestrials that inspired primitive religions. Though the book has been heavily criticized by academics due to its misleading presentation of legitimate historical findings, its […]

Ok, I’ll admit it. I have a soft spot for Robert Dyke’s 1989 sci-fi horror Moontrap. I have ever since the weekend I rented it and 1990′s The Dark Side of the Moon and was blown away by both space-faring terror tales. Which is probably why I own multiple copies Moontrap; well that and the fact there hasn’t been a perfect release of the film on DVD or Blu yet… So when a sequel was announced decades after the release of the film, it’s safe to say my interest was peaked. In fact we first wrote about the sequel, titled Moontrap: Target Earth, way, way back in 2014. Then things went all quiet on the sci-fi front. Until last month.

Ancient aliens visiting earth, guiding early man. In the 70's, with the popularity of Erich von Däniken's book and Harald Reinl's film Chariot of the Gods, they were a hot topic. The Nazca Lines, Pyramids of Giza, and other wonders suggest the use of technology unavailable to people of the period.
This, and the scattered ancient artwork on several continents that suggests flying machines and men in spacesuits, drove a paranormal fad into a pop culture phenomenon.
While much of the evidence related to the ancient astronaut theory has been refuted, it's difficult to debunk much of the artistic evidence left behind by ancient men, and the latest discovery of this kind of graphic evidence is in India.

Prometheus; Rock of Ages; Fast Girls; Shut Up and Play the Hits
In the wake of the absurd levels of hype (both authorised and otherwise) that preceded its long-awaited cinema release, it was perhaps inevitable that Prometheus (2012, Fox, 15) should have been judged a let-down by so many hardcore fans, going from the most anticipated to the most disappointing film of the year in the space of its opening weekend. Hopefully now that the brouhaha has subsided and the promotional caravan has left town it's possible for viewers to see the movie for what it is, rather than what they wanted it to be. In an age of machine-tooled, head-banging franchise fantasy fodder, it's good to find an unashamedly grandiloquent sci-fi flick with big ideas and foolhardy ambitions, even if only some of them are realised. In the words of ultimate space-trooper Buzz Lightyear, it may not be flying but it's certainly falling with style.

In the first article of this “Answering the Titan” series we attempted to decipher the clues that are laid out in Prometheus in an effort to solve what many see as an ambiguous storyline, observing that the movie presents a series of hints alluding to plot answers, though few if any of these answers are definitive. In the second article we explored the mythological and literary motifs that form the philosophical backdrop for the Prometheus narrative, and concluded that Prometheus weaves its narrative tapestry from a disparate collection of ancient myths and legends.
In this article we will talk about the key themes underlying Prometheus which, at its heart, is a cautionary tale about the dangers of dabbling with that which is not fully understood; and a fable that creation, progression and knowledge...

As Ridley Scott's new sci-fi epic lands in cinemas today, June 1, academics at the University of Warwick have given their views on the film - and the Alien films to which it is a prequel.
Dr Jack Cohen, Honorary Professor of the University of Warwick, and one of the joint authors of Evolving the Alien: The Science of Extraterrestrial Life, says he is glad the film avoided the usual design of extraterrestrials as humanoids with ridged brows.
He commented: "The Alien universe, which Prometheus may also be part of, at least avoids the more preposterous fictional universes where most of the aliens look exactly like humans - but with slightly different types of bumpy foreheads. Aliens are likely to be much more alien."
But he added: "However the key aliens of the Alien universe still draw too much on human's own fear images and this obscures more reasoned...

Ridley Scott's return to the Alien universe is grandiose and muddled – with a scene-stealing Michael Fassbender performance
Ridley Scott has counter-evolved his 1979 classic Alien into something more grandiose, more elaborate – but less interesting. In place of scariness there is wonderment; in place of tension there is hugely ambitious design; in place of unforgettable shocks there are reminders of the original's unforgettable shocks. There are also some shrewd and witty touches, and one terrifically creepy performance from Michael Fassbender, who steals the film with the chilling, parasitic relentlessness of that first gut-bound alien. The original took place in space, where no one can hear you scream; in this film, no one can hear you scream above the deafening, kettle drum-bothering orchestral score.
The freaky-dystopian conspiracy spirit of 1970s sci-fi survives, sort of. At one point, someone produces a squeeze-box allegedly once owned by Stephen Stills, but doesn't actually play anything on it.

A classic of British sci-fi makes its Blu-ray debut today. Here’s exactly why you should settle down to watch Quatermass And The Pit…
There are some stories that, despite the ravages of time, continue to resonate down the decades. Quatermass And The Pit is one such example, and perhaps the finest British sci-fi movie ever made.
Already a hit television series in the 1950s, a time when the adventures of Professor Bernard Quatermass were enormously popular, Quatermass And The Pit’s script spent several years in limbo. Other stories featuring the professor had been adapted for the big screen before (these were 1955’s The Quatermass Xperiment, released in the Us as The Creeping Unknown, and Quatermass 2, retitled Enemy From Space), but a lack of interest from American financiers meant that Nigel Kneale’s Pit script sat around unfilmed for six years.
It’s no exaggeration to say that the wait was worth it.

Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford contend with goo-dripping aliens in Jon Favreau's sadly humourless sci-fi western
In all the advertising for Jon Favreau's blockbuster Cowboys & Aliens, the latter element of the provocative title is presented in larger type, thus suggesting the current ascendancy of one genre over the other. Among the dozen or so listed producers are a pair of directors – Steven Spielberg, who has been behind a string of sci-fi movies, and Ron Howard, who has made two ambitious westerns, one rather good, the other a distinct failure.
Based (not surprisingly) on a graphic novel, the picture stars Daniel Craig, a stranger both to the west and to sci-fi, and Harrison Ford, who made his name in the Star Wars movies but came a cropper with his only big-screen western. They play a couple of gun-toting hardmen in post-civil war New Mexico territory, the stamping ground of...

Prometheus, for anyone who’s had their head stuck in a bucket of water for the last year, is the new Ridley Scott sci-fi movie, which is apparently not quite a prequel to his Alien, but is set within the same cosmos and continuity as that 1979 genre classic. A new cast member has just signed up, and a spoiler-tastic synopsis has been leaked.
Well, maybe. There’s more than a hint of space-balls about the ‘leaked’ plot, although it would seem to tie in with recent comments by Scott himself. But that could just be some sneaky li’l squirrel taking note of what the great man said, and bending their phoney-baloney synopsis to match.
But before we get on to that, let’s deal with the more solid Prometheus news: Ben Foster, he of The Mechanic and The Messenger, has apparently been added to a cast that already includes Noomi Rapace,...

The precise nature of Ridley Scott's new film Prometheus has been mysterious since it was first announced. Growing out of the remains of a prequel to the 1979 Alien, Prometheus was said to be a totally different film. But details have slowly emerged that paint it as, in truth, a definite prequel to Alien that uses the same ideas and explores the nature of the dead 'space jockey' seen briefly in that movie. Screenwriter Damon LIndelof recently talked [1] about how Alien and Prometheus are connected, albeit in very general terms. Now there is some new info that makes the connection a lot more clear. Or might, as we don't know that the info is 100% accurate. As the headline explicitly says, there are a lot of potential spoilers in here. In fact, almost everything after the break should be considered spoilerish, just to be safe. Before we get to the maybe-synopsis,...

Ridley Scott and his Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender attended CineEurope (a European exhibitors expo). There, Scott dropped some more plot info. "The (space) journey, metaphorically, is about a challenge to the gods... Nasa and the Vatican agree that is almost mathematically impossible that we can be where we are today without there being a little help along the way. That's what we're looking at (in the film), at some of Erich von Däniken's ideas of how did we humans come about." I love that everyone involved is dancing around the specifics of this film. If you missed writer Damon Lindelof's quotes yesterday , check 'em out. While at CineEurope, Fassbender hinted that he could be an android in the film, which opens on June 8, 2012.

Ryan looks back at the work of author Hp Lovecraft, the writer behind Guillermo del Toro’s forthcoming At The Mountains Of Madness…
In his own lifetime, Howard Philips Lovecraft was a virtual unknown. His stories appeared in pulp magazines such as Weird Tales and Astounding Stories, alongside contemporary genre writers such as Robert E Howard and August Derleth, and wouldn’t be published in book form until long after Lovecraft’s death.
It was only after Hp Lovecraft's passing in 1937 that his work began to be reassessed, and even then his distinctive, verbose prose was scorned by the literary establishment. The critic, Edmund Wilson, infamously dismissed the author's tales as "bad taste and bad art" in 1945.
Gradually, however, Lovecraft's reputation grew, and he's now rightly recognised as one of the 20th century's most important American authors. In 2005, a collection of Lovecraft's stories was collected together for The Library Of America,...

There was a catch to this week's decision of the German Federal Film Board to approve more funds to more screenwrights than usual: In average, most of them walk away with less money. No maximum subsidies (30,000, in exceptional cases 50,000) were given out to the 16 approved projects (out of 60). Instead, all screenplays were affirmed for support payments of either 18,000 or just over 14,500 Euros. Four treatments received 7,000 each. Of course, that group included some better-known names, such as Fatih Akin, director of Head-On and The Edge of Heaven, who has teamed up with journalist Hans Hielscher to write a script called Kämpfernatur (Born Fighter), a story based in the world of professional boxing. We also have Aliza Olmert, visual artist and wife of former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert, who is trying to get her autobiographical novel A Slice of Sea on the big screen with the help of Brit writer/director Gareth Jones.
