Since Gunn & Safran assumed control of the Dceu and rebranded it as the Dcu, a significant faction of fans who appreciated Snyder’s vision has been discontent. Gunn faces ongoing criticism and is frequently compelled to justify a movie that has yet to be completed or released.
The latest controversy revolves around allegations of potential excessive use of CGI in the forthcoming ‘Superman’ film.
The production schedule for upcoming Dcu projects is well-known by now, highlighting Gunn’s active involvement in all forthcoming shows and films. ‘Superman’ was the second project to begin production this year, closely followed by ‘Creature Commandos,’ which is nearing completion. Additionally, ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 and ‘Waller’ are slated to be shot concurrently as TV series.
Fans expressed concern when Gunn revealed he would write and direct all episodes, fearing it might detract from his focus on the ‘Superman’ production. Some argued that since ‘Superman’ was initially supposed to finish filming early,...

Ever since Gunn & Safran took over Dceu and rebooted it into Dcu, a large portion of the fandom that liked Snyder’s vision was mad. Gunn is constantly under attack and forced to defend the movie that isn’t even remotely close to being finished or released.
The most recent controversy and accusation is targeted toward the potential overuse of CGI in the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie.
The production schedule of the upcoming Dcu projects is fairly known at this point, and it’s clear that Gunn is working hard to take an active part in the development of all shows and movies to come. ‘Superman’ was the second project to start production this year, with ‘Creature Commandos’ almost being done. Then we have ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 and ‘Waller,’ TV shows that are supposed to be shot simultaneously.

David Corenswet is our new Man of Steel, but before landing the leading role in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, he had auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, at least, that was the rumour.
Responding to a fan on Threads, Gunn confirmed that Corenset did indeed audition for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but admitted that he doesn’t actually recall it. “I asked him about it and he said he did so I believe him, but I don’t remember it,” Gunn said. The fan also asked if Superman’s flying scenes in the new movie might be similar to Adam Warlock’s flying scenes from Guardians 3. “No, what we’re doing now for flying is much more complex than what was done for [Adam Warlock],” Gunn responded.

Last year, Gunn and Safran introduced new plans for the “Dcu,” a cinematic universe intended to replace and reboot the Dceu. The initial phase, dubbed ‘Gods & Monsters,’ encompasses animated projects and live-action shows set in Themyscira long before Wonder Woman’s era.
Although the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ debuted first, the true kickoff of the Dcu will be ‘Superman,’ a live-action film centering on a younger Superman, effectively supplanting Cavill’s established Man of Steel. While the movie is still far from release, we’ve gathered available information in this comprehensive guide. Let’s dive in!
The plot of the film remains a mystery, yet its inspiration is clear enough
At the Dcu reveal, Gunn mentioned that the upcoming movie draws inspiration from ‘All-Star Superman,’ despite the costume drawing from Alex Ross’ art and the logo resembling ‘Kingdom Come’ Superman at the table reading. The movie’s brief synopsis...

It seems that not a single Gunn’s announcement related to the upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot can go without controversy. A while back, when Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl, the director was criticized for having an all-white main cast of the movie.
Now the most recent outrage is directed toward the cast being “D-List” in nature. Everything started with the announcement that Pruitt Taylor Vince will be cast as Jonathan Kent in the upcoming reboot with Neva Howell cast as Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive human mother.
Even though both actors are established in their own right with medium-sized roles, none of them in the past has led blockbusters. Vince will star as a series regular in the upcoming Apple TV+ series ‘Lady in the Lake,’ alongside Natalie Portman, set to release this summer. His extensive television work includes appearances in popular series such as Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things,’ Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,...

It appears that every announcement about James Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot sparks controversy. Some time ago, when Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl, the director faced criticism for assembling an all-white main cast (despite Supergirl not being a part of main cast…)

On one hand, fans seem to believe he’s the perfect actor for the role, but on the other, fans just cannot picture him playing Pa Kent.

While it might seem as though he already has a pretty stacked cast, James Gunn is reportedly adding at least one more, as The Wrap reports that Pruitt Taylor Vince will play Jonathan Kent, Aka the titular hero's adoptive human father in his new take on Superman.
Vince is taking on the iconic — and assuming Gunn is sticking to canon – ill-fated role of the Smallville father who discovers the infant Kal El and raises him alongside wife Martha Kent as Clark Kent. Kevin Costner played the role for Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel, while Glenn Ford took on the role in 1978’s Superman, directed by Richard Donner.

The sequel to the 2005 superhero horror film was stalled due to the writers strike but with writers back at work, Lawrence has been in meetings with Reeves to continue the saga.

When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 3, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. In celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary, here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

Indy’s back — and in tears.
The time finally came for the Cannes Film Festival to host an old friend — a swashbuckling archaeologist named Indiana Jones — courtesy of the world premiere of James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Held Thursday evening at the Palais, the screening saw the filmmaker joined by beloved franchise star Harrison Ford alongside co-stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge (in Schiaparelli Haute Couture), Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore (in custom Ami), Shaunette Renee Wilson and Mads Mikkelsen.
And after every last credit rolled for the Lucasfilm and Disney blockbuster, the black-tie audience responded by dialing up a rousing standing ovation to five minutes, a strong showing for the out-of-competition title on what turned out to be a very emotional night for its franchise star.
Ahead of the screening, festival director Thierry Fremaux surprised the audience by taking the stage and presenting a highlight reel of Ford’s legendary career.

As many of you Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fans know, before Vince Gilligan became a demi-God of modern television in the late aughts, he was learning the ropes under the hands of Chris Carter, the father of The X-Files. Gilligan wrote or co-wrote 30 episodes of the classic sci-fi series, which undoubtedly played a key part in his success many years later. Carter gave Gilligan enough creative freedom that allowed him to play out the full scope of his ideas ranging from suspenseful to touchingly dramatic to campy and downright hilarious. As a result, he’s written some of the most gripping and beloved episodes in the show’s history.
Gilligan had great talent to begin with, but it was the versatility of The X-Files that permitted his creativity to flourish in numerous ways. Now, we’re here to highlight some of the finest work he’s done for the series through nine seasons.

Keanu Reeves has admitted just how hard he fought for Warner Bros to greenlight a Constantine sequel.
In September 2022, the studio confirmed a forthcoming sequel to the actor’s 2005 fantasy horror film – based on DC/Vertigo’s Hellblazer comics – in which he starred as suicide survivor and demon hunter John, who finds himself entangled in a supernatural plot between angelic and demonic forces.
The spin-off comes nearly two decades after the original was released, with Reeves admitting it took continued persistence before Warner Bros finally agreed to a sequel.

The actor revealed (complete with an Oliver Twist accent) that he asked, “Can I please have some more?” to Warner Bros. every year since “Constantine” was released in 2005.
“I don’t know if it was unfinished business but it was definitely a role that I loved, and I thought that Francis Lawrence, the director, did such amazing work. I loved playing that character, and I really enjoyed the film,” Reeves told Total Film (via MovieWeb). “I was like, [adopts Oliver Twist voice,] ‘Can I please have some more?’ … I kept asking almost every year. I’d be like, ‘Can I please?’ [and] they’d be like, ‘No, no!'”
As for the sequel, which was confirmed in September 2022, Reeves said, “It’s exciting. It’s almost like an open playground that we can hopefully cook something up and play in,...

For occult expert John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), exorcising demons on a freelance basis is as mundane as it gets. Intensely cynical and acutely aware of his loneliness, Constantine is forever caught in a war between Heaven and Hell, jilted by God and loathed by demons. However, Constantine's motive to do what he does is not entirely selfless: He's a dying man who has been marked for Hell, trudging through life and experiencing unimaginable horrors. He is as burnt out as the endless chain of cigarettes he smokes, while he takes on cases that require his expert occult knowledge and effortless prowess.
Such is the plot of Francis Lawrence's 2005 directorial debut, "Constantine," which features a beloved Vertigo/DC Comics character who had little in common with his comics counterpart. Although the film received mixed critical reviews at the time of its release, "Constantine" has (rightfully) garnered a cult following over...

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead season 11 episode 19.
Over a decade ago, The Walking Dead started out as a series depicting the horrors of a post-apocalyptic world in which re-animed humans have come back after death to eat the living. This is all very typical of the zombie genre, but fans were quickly treated to what made the show different, and actually quite revolutionary compared to its rivals. After the initial threat of a walker (the most common name for the zombies) or two has been snuffed out, humans have to worry about recreating a world that is habitable for the survivors. This quickly leads to the most realistic epiphany in the series: people are the biggest threat to each other, end of the world or not, because humans are often inherently selfish and weak.
There were a few characters in the first two seasons who epitomized this idea,...

Director Robert Benton and Paul Newman come through with an extremely pleasing small town story. Snowy North Bath New York would seem a pit of failures big and small, until we begin to appreciate its social web of ‘support relationships’ that fill in for broken family connections. Newman’s injured laborer can’t get a fair shake, but he begins to realize the importance of his neighbors and his grandson. The comic conflicts are wholly believable, with Jessica Tandy, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Philip Seymour Hoffman on board: this one is Mellow and Mature (and a little racy) without succumbing to Hallmark TV drama sentimentality.

This article contains spoilers for Tales of the Walking Dead episode 1, Fear The Walking Dead, and The Walking Dead.
In general, the shows that make up The Walking Dead‘s expanded universe don’t tend to leave a lot of room for sentimentality. This is a world determined to drive humans to extinction, with threats all around. Be it the crumbling, zombie-infested cities or the harsh, unforgiving wilderness, there’s not a lot of succor to be had. With humans driven to banditry or worse, and the general difficulty of finding food and potable water in this universe, there aren’t a lot of time or resources for seeking out animal friendships.
Man’s best friend could be another casualty of the insatiable appetite of the dead. Fortunately, humans aren’t the only creatures on Earth with a knack for making do. Things are hard all over, but animals are...

In 2000, “The Practice” became the first drama series to receive five guest acting Emmy nominations in a single year. That record, which was matched by “House of Cards” in 2016, has now been shattered by “Succession.” Of the HBO show’s seven 2022 guest bids, an unprecedented four are in the male category. Included in this quartet of contenders is Alexander Skarsgård, who is back in the fold five years after taking home his first Emmy for his supporting performance on the limited series “Big Little Lies.”
Skarsgård earned this Best Drama Guest Actor nomination for his work in the third season finale of “Succession,” entitled “All the Bells Say.” His character, Lukas Matsson, was introduced two episodes earlier as a Swedish businessman considering selling his streaming platform, GoJo, to Logan Roy (Brian Cox), the founder and CEO of media conglomerate Waystar Royco. Dreyfuss is a former mobster resorting to violence in a film whose delightful score can’t save it from being a hot mess
The best thing about this crime melodrama is the score, credited to composers Shane Endsley, Ben Wendel and Nate Wood (all part of a jazz group called Kneebody); it is a weird, lilting horn-led underlay to the action, full of keening melodies with an urban, smoky nightclub vibe. It’s a delight – but seems to have almost no relation to the action we see on screen. You might almost imagine that the group’s work just happened to be what was playing in the editing suite when the film was being cut together and a quick deal was done to add class to what is a deeply indifferent, muddled drama.
Written and directed, somewhat ineptly if we are being honest, by Adam Lipsius, The Last Job tells...

Crime Story is a film that tries to sell an improbable story. Though there are some good performances here, enjoyment of the film hinges on the viewer's ability to suspend disbelief.
We first meet our anti-hero, Ben Myers, via voiceover. Richard Dreyfuss's voice is easily recognizable,as is the scene. He's been shot and wounded and is being questioned by paramedics on the ride to the hospital. Briefly, we're treated to what must be his life, and mistakes, passing before his eyes. Claiming to be "based on actual events," we are now informed that we are going to a point in time "12 hours earlier."
Ben Myers is a 71 year-old man. We get this information from the paramedics in the first scene. When we first see Ben, we also see that he is obese. He and his second wife, Nan,...

Worse things have happened to Oscar winners, but it’s still unfortunate to see both Richard Dreyfuss and Mira Sorvino flailing in the inept muddle of “Crime Story.” Playing a semi-estranged father and daughter thrown into crisis mode over a few hours’ course following a home robbery, the stars are not exactly at their best here.
But then the odds are sharply stacked against them, as writer-director Adam Lipsius’ film has the feel of an enterprise whose script wasn’t quite ready for “action!”: Half the dialogue sounds haplessly improvised, with sporadic voiceover narration coming off as an equally forlorn attempt to belatedly cohere a half-baked whole. Such things do not a taut crime thriller make, and “Story” (previously promoted as both “”The Last Job” and “Reckoning”) also fails as a rather maudlin dysfunctional-family drama, among other things. Saban Films is opening the feature in 10 U.S. cities this Friday,...

"I decided to do what I do." What a terrible line. Saban Films / Paramount have released an official trailer for a very generic action thriller titled Crime Story, which is getting a theatrical + VOD release this August for anyone who might want to watch this. The pitch: an old man suffering from cancer seeks revenge on the thieves who have destroyed his life. Academy Award-winner Richard Dreyfuss stars as an infamous ex-mob boss who "must finally face the consequences of his dark past" when his family also gets caught up in his vengeance plot. The full cast includes Mira Sorvino, Cress Williams, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Derek Russo, Haviland Stillwell, and Andrea Frankle. Despite starring two Oscar winners, this is straight-to-the-bargain-bin, derivative "content" that everyone will just forget as soon as they finish watching. Oh well. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Adam Lipsius' Crime Story, direct from Paramount's YouTube:...

Streamer's Choice: "Nobody's Fool"
Because so many of our readers find themselves house-bound during this period of Coronavirus, we'll be providing occasional reviews of films and series currently available on popular streaming services.
By Lee Pfeiffer
Paul Newman gives a delightful, Oscar-nominated late career performance in "Nobody's Fool", a comedy/drama written and directed by Robert Benton. Newman plays Sully Sullivan, a 60 year-old lovable cad who finds himself down on his luck in his boyhood hometown of Bath, in upstate New York. He barely scrapes by doing odd jobs for Carl Roebuck (an inexplicably unbilled Bruce Willlis), the obnoxious owner of a local construction company. The two men are sworn enemies but they maintain a relationship because they mutually benefit. Sully makes his home in the boarding house of the elderly widow, Beryl Peoples (Jessica Tandy), who showers him with maternal love. The feeling is mutual and Sully acts as handyman and confidant to Beryl.

Though Netflix rarely makes public the viewing figures for their shows and films, the numbers for their recent hit Bird Box have been too impressive not to share. In fact, in its first week alone, we’ve been told that the movie was viewed by a whopping 45 million people.
Yes, it’s become quite apparent that Susanne Bier’s post-apocalyptic thriller has taken the world by storm ever since hitting the streaming service in December, with its gripping story of survival inspiring all sorts of discussion amongst Netflix subscribers. And while the pic had a fairly conclusive ending, there are certainly more than a couple of ways that things could continue. As such, all talk has now turned to whether we’ll see a sequel or not.
After all, though Malorie and her children seemed to have found their safe haven at the end of Bird Box, the story doesn’t need to finish there.

According to hundreds of Gold Derby users currently predicting the Creative Arts Emmys, Cameron Britton (“Mindhunter”) is the front-runner to win Best Drama Guest Actor for his role as real-life serial killer Ed Kemper. But on paper that might seem unlikely. “Mindhunter” got no other nominations, so can he really take down actors from Best Drama Series contenders like “This is Us” (Gerald McRaney and Ron Cephas Jones), “The Crown” (Matthew Goode) and “Westworld” (Jimmi Simpson)? To win under those circumstances is somewhat rare, but not unprecedented.
The Emmys introduced guest-acting categories in 1986, and since then eight people have won on their shows’ only nomination. It happened three times in Best Comedy Guest Actor: Cleavon Little, Tim Conway and Peter Scolari.
It happened three times in Best Drama Guest Actress: Viveca Landfors, Amanda Plummer and Cloris Leachman.

One of Emmy’s deep, dark secrets is that she loves serial killers. In fact, over the past two decades many actors have won Best Drama Guest Actor for playing such psychotic murderers. Remember Pruitt Taylor Vince on “Murder One” (1997)? How about John Larroquette (1998) and Michael Emerson (2001) for “The Practice”? More recently there was John Lithgow for “Dexter” (2010) and (to a lesser extent) Joe Morton for “Scandal” (2014). All of this is great news, of course, for Cameron Britton on Netflix’s “Mindhunter,” who portrays TV’s latest serial killer Edmund Kemper.
SEEJonathan Groff (‘Mindhunter’): Emmy Experts say the Netflix G-Man could track down his first nomination
Britton may not have a recognizable name, but that didn’t stop Vince or Emerson from winning Emmys thanks in part to the lasting impact of their characters. All of Kemper’s scenes take place in prison many years after he was arrested for his spree killings.

Normally, I don’t bother to cover poorly received films here. It’s easier to focus on the positive, at least outside of the awards race. However, this is a unique situation. The mob film Gotti opened last weekend, to some of 2018’s worst reviews. Well, some of in the sense that only a very small amount of press, notably those who were granted interview opportunities, were screened the movie in advance of its release. That led, in part, to a poor showing at the box office. Then, this week, the producers tried to use social media to spin it, claiming that audiences, the few who saw it, anyway, loved it, while critics were trying to keep you from seeing it. Simply put, that’s fake news, so it’s something I’m going to address today. The movie is a biopic of crime boss John Gotti. The plot synopsis...

Devised as John Travolta’s awards contender, ‘Gotti’ opened in 11th place this weekend, while Pixar broke records with 'Incredibles 2' grossing $182.7 million.
Though ‘Gotti’ had a tiny budget of $10 million, its $1.7 million opening is among the lowest in Travolta’s 40-year film career, which has broken $1 billion. All things equal, the film was only offered in 503 U.S. theaters while most wide releases can reach up to 4,000 theaters.
Of that $1.7 million, nearly 40% of ‘Gotti’s’ domestic gross came from MoviePass subscribers, who purchased tickets through the $9.95-monthly service. On Monday, MoviePass announced they had hit 3 million subscribers, which means that ‘Gotti’ could have potentially grossed over $25 million had all MoviePass subscribers seen the film.
Critics weren’t kind to the project they described as an exoneration of the real-life mobster murderer, who was often called Teflon Don in the media.
But Travolta was drawn to that dichotomy of a folk hero in the headlines and villain in the streets. When IMDb Special Correspondent Dave Karger caught up with Travolta and director Kevin Connolly at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the pair explained how it was the actor’s passion that willed ‘Gotti’ into being.
The Cannes screening was not in Competition at the festival, but was part of the film’s streamlined advertising campaign that relied on Travolta’s celebrity to get the word out. The strength of Travolta’s name attracted venerable character actors Stacy Keach and Pruitt Taylor Vince to the project, as well as Travolta’s wife Kelly Preston, who plays Mrs. Gotti.
Despite an aggregate score of 0% from critics, IMDb users are split on their feelings. Some point out that Travolta’s solid performance was lost in a boring, ‘Goodfellas’ ripoff. The film currently rates an average of 4.9 from close to 900 reviews.
‘Gotti’ may not be a masterpiece, but it’s got us talking! To hear more about the film, you can watch our interviews with Travolta, or add the film to your Watchlist.

Chicago – Probably the last classic era of romanticized organized crime in New York City was the reign of John Gotti… the high profile boss of the Gambino family from 1986-1992. Nicknamed both the Dapper Don and Teflon Don (because of his ability to avoid prosecution), he is brought back to life by John Travolta in the sparely titled “Gotti.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The film is directed by Kevin Connolly, who portrayed “E” on HBO’s “Entourage,” and he takes a Citizen Kane-like approach to telling the story, jumping around in the eras of Gotti’s reign, anchored by his relationship with John Jr., who followed in his father’s footsteps until desiring to leave the “life” and avoid prison (the film used John Jr.’s book “Shadow of My Father” as its centerpiece source). There is a lot of material in the film, but it is buttressed by John Travolta’s tour-de-force performance of the title character,...

John Gotti Jr. thinks the story of his father’s life should at least be playing on a few more screens on the Gambino family’s home turf. The son of the notorious mobster is distressed that “Gotti” is only playing a few theaters in Brooklyn.
“It’s not being shown in areas where the story happened and that’s a shame,” he said. “I don’t get it.”
Gotti Jr. has been working on getting the film off the ground for nearly a decade, and the biopic starring John Travolta finally arrives at 503 theaters this weekend. But the low-budget drama could get whacked at the box office.
The long-gestating project, which was directed by “Entourage” star Kevin Connolly, is now saddled with a 0% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on six reviews from the Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered on May 15 and Travolta made headlines boogieing onstage with 50 Cent at the after-party.

Chicago – John Travolta has fulfilled his career legacy of icon status, and he continues to work on projects that highlight his performance abilities. Fresh off his role as real-life Robert Shapiro in “The People Vs. O.J. Simpson,” Travolta takes on another historical figure in his portrayal of mobster John Gotti in the new film “Gotti.”
The film, directed by Kevin Connally (“Entourage”), is a multi-era biography film, based on a memoir by Gotti’s son John Jr. The main story reveals the relationship of a father who lived and died by the mob code, and a son who chose to leave that world behind, in hopes of redeeming himself and the family name.
