Andalusia boasts legendary locations, used for decades in productions from “Lawrence of Arabia” to “Game of Thrones.” Now it’s the turn of the filmmakers from the region to get attention. This year’s Seville European Film Festival ran an Andalusian Panorama. Its aim was to showcase the latest and best of Andalusian cinema. A reccy:
Antonio Canales, Dancer (Raúl Rosillo, Spain )
A portrait of a legendary figure in flamenco culture. Rosillo’s film tracks Canales career through avant garde staging and interviews. Produced by José Carlos Conde, Antonio Carreto Cano, Victoria De Prado. A Seville world premiere.
@Buddhistandqueer: From Sari To Habit (“@Buddhistandqueer: Del Sari Al Habito”, Dani Sa-Lo, Spain/India)
Set in India, this doc short follows Tashi, a queer activist who, though now a buddhist monk, continues fighting for justice in their community. Tashi’s complete comfort in who they are is not fully shared by parents.

The Video Essay is a joint project of Mubi and Filmadrid International Film Festival. Film analysis and criticism found a completely new and innovative path with the arrival of the video essay, a relatively recent form that has already its own masters and is becoming increasingly popular. The limits of this discipline are constantly expanding; new essayists are finding innovative ways to study the history of cinema working with images. With this non-competitive section of the festival both Mubi and Filmadrid will offer the platform and visibility the video essay deserves. The seven selected works will be premiering online from June 7 - 13, 2021 on Mubi's Notebook. The selection was made by the programmers of Mubi and Filmadrid. From The Flicker to Gaspar Noé by Carlos Baixauli A journey into experimental cinema through the films of Gaspar Noé and his dialogue between the use of the flicker technique and the works of directors such as Paul Sharits,...

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

I haven’t traveled all I have to Buenos Aires and back to tell you about how this festival, alongside Mar del Plata and Valdivia (this last one in Chile), form the triad of the most important festivals of Latin America, because if you know about it, you know about it. People that have travelled to Argentina for the past 17 years in April have felt the presence of cinema in the streets—and Buenos Aires is a big city. The importance of a festival that brings over 300 titles, some of them for the first time crossing an ocean, is fundamental for the Latino viewer, as well for those who want to make the effort and come to see the movies that play here. On a closer look, what plays here may seem to be eclectic at times, it is purely due to what seems to be the motto of the festival: discovery.

"Sidney Lumet: Experimental Filmmaker?" That title's a grabber and the link to Fergus Daly's essay in the new Winter 2011 issue of Experimental Conversations, Cork Film Centre's online journal of experimental film, art cinema and video art, began bopping around, given a propulsive boost from Girish Shambu and Catherine Grant:
When Lumet died and tributes started to flood in from luminaries such as Scorsese, Allen and Pacino, it was easy to forget the disdain with which Lumet was often met with throughout his career, most notably the appalling attacks on him by the likes of celebrity reviewer Pauline Kael, an unaccountably influential figure in American film criticism who assassinated Lumet time and again, personally and professionally… In the final analysis, Kael's type of neurotic and unconsidered attack may be entertaining for celebrity culture devotees but in the end it has nothing to do with the cinema.
