Calling the production of 1989's "Batman" an uphill struggle is an understatement. There's a reason director Tim Burton claims bringing his vision of the Dark Knight to fruition was "torture." Lawyer-turned-producer Michael E. Uslan, who'd acquired the rights to a Batman movie in the '70s, envisioned a darker cinematic take on the character, and Burton was brought on to make it happen. But keeping things on track was a slog from the outset.
Burton had to work hard to convince Uslan that Michael Keaton should play Batman, and that was just the beginning of his struggles. The director clashed with producer Jon Peters, who reportedly caused Burton to run off set in tears after he told him to add more "pathos and romance" to his movie. Carl Grissom actor Jack Palance also gave Burton a dressing down after a miscommunication on-set. And all of this was happening within the...

Long before every conceivable comic book character received a film adaptation in the hopes of becoming the next blockbuster, there was Superman. While box office returns diminished over the course of four movies, the Man of Steel’s big-screen success heralded a crop of other superhero movies. Producers Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan swooped in to acquire the film rights to DC Comics’ other most well-known character, Batman (and they remain executive producers on every Batman movie), along with a more obscure title, Swamp Thing.
Not unlike a common trajectory in the modern comic book movie boom – in which filmmakers who have proven themselves in the genre space are given the keys to superhero properties – Wes Craven was enlisted to write and direct 1982’s Swamp Thing despite his unfamiliarity with the source material. While he would go on to make a name for himself with A Nightmare on Elm Street next,...

Decades before internet dwellers decried Robert Pattinson earning the lead role in Matt Reeves' "The Batman," there was the original Batman casting controversy. When Michael Keaton was confirmed for 1989's "Batman," the backlash was significant enough that director Tim Burton had to fight to keep his star. But as with most casting debacles, it turned out to be for nothing. Not only had Keaton figured out Batman's real power lay within Bruce Wayne, the actor was in perfect alignment with Burton's vision for a shadowy, expressionistic reinvention of Batman for a new generation. Which, as it happens, lined up with what producer Michael E. Uslan had envisioned when he set "Batman" 1989 in motion.
The lawyer-turned-producer had acquired the rights to a Batman movie in the '70s, and was intent upon seeing his dream of a truly dark onscreen Dark Knight come to fruition. As Uslan put it, the goal...

Although "The Flash" may have been a paltry send-off for Michael Keaton's Batman, nothing can undermine his first two appearances in the cape and cowl. When 1989's "Batman" arrived, not only was it a box office smash, but its dark and subversive tone was unlike anything anyone had seen, especially in the context of a comic book movie.
Often, you'll hear praise heaped on Tim Burton for this magic trick — and rightly so. Without the director's unique artistic vision and offbeat sensibility, "Batman" would not have been the unforgettable expressionist experience it was. You might also hear about the late Anton Furst's production design, which gave vivid life to the nightmare scape of urban decay that was his Gotham City. But there was a lesser-known presence that helped shape the 1989 blockbuster, and without which "Batman" may never have been made.

To tamp down any speculation right away, this post will not be of a lascivious nature, and should not be confused with the rumors — started by Adam West himself in his 1994 autobiography — that he and his "Batman" co-star Frank Gorshin were once kicked out of an orgy because they wouldn't stop acting like their "Batman" characters. This is a story sans orgies.
It is a story about how William Dozier, the creator of the 1966 "Batman" TV series, became interested in the character after a TV executive went to a party at the Playboy Mansion in Chicago, and dipped into the mansion's screening room (!) to watch some of the "Batman" theatrical serials from the 1940s. This is a story chronicled by author Les Daniels in the 1999 book "Batman: The Complete History."

Leslie H. Martinson's 1966 feature film "Batman," a spinoff feature from the popular TV series that launched the same year, is -- without hyperbole -- one of the best films of its decade. There is no film more sublimely self-aware, more colorful, funnier, or more brazenly entertaining than "Batman." None of the Batman films since have managed to approach Martinson's miraculous cinematic purity and subversive satire. "Batman" celebrates the ridiculous, childlike glory inherent in superhero comics, while also sending it up; Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) are so obnoxiously square, one can't help but laugh at them a little bit. However, West and Ward are so brilliantly earnest in their comedic performances, one can't help but also admire their genius. Add to that four over-the-top villain performances from Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Lee Meriwether, and Burgess Meredith, and one can see how "Batman" approaches the sublime. It is...

Many directors have taken on the challenge of bringing Batman to the big screen. Some have been successful, while others have created ... well, less successful renderings of the infamous vigilante. Tim Burton's 1989 adaptation of the comics is often looked upon as one of the best realizations of the story of Bruce Wayne. A charismatic Michael Keaton dons the cowl in Burton's vision, and he is largely convincing as he protects Gotham from the evil clutches of Jack Nicholson's maniacal Joker.

In 2005, Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" introduced a darker and moodier version of the iconic superhero than had ever been seen on-screen before, and that angst and violence was further embraced by Matt Reeves' "The Batman" in 2022. For the first time in a while, moviegoers were given raw and brutal street fights between The Dark Knight and Gotham goons, and wanted more.
The overwhelming success of Nolan and Reeves' films proved that Batman fans longed for the tortured and barbaric version of the character after years of being dragged through goofy and childish portrayals of the vigilante in films such as 1966's "Batman," starring Adam West, and 1997's "Batman & Robin," starring George Clooney. Nolan's trilogy often receives credit, rightfully so, for tossing the grit and dirt back into the vigilante's image and tugging the film version of Batman closer to his graphic novel roots. The Batman now has a solid premiere date on HBO Max. The Warner Brothers blockbuster will launch on the streaming service on Monday, April 18, and also will air on HBO on Satuday, April 23 at 8 Pm Et.
It was expected that the Matt Reeves-helmed pic, starring Robert Pattinson in the dual role of Gotham City’s vigilante detective and his alter ego, reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne, would land on HBO Max in late April. A tech glitch on the HBO website last month briefly posted the date of April 19 for the HBO Max launch before it was taken down. All Warner Bros. theatrical releases are slated to hit the streaming service 45 days after their debut in cinemas. The pic has grossed 735 million worldwide, 359 million domestic.

Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman has winged its way past the half a billion dollar mark worldwide to become the fourth highest-grossing studio release of the pandemic era. The global total is $505.8M through Wednesday, and there’s still plenty of gas left in the Batmobile.
The split on the critically praised, Matt Reeves-directed pic is $258.3M domestic and $247.5M through yesterday at the international box office.
Robert Pattinson’s turn in the Batsuit started offshore rollout early in Korea on March 1, and across its first weekend in 74 overseas markets bowed to $124.2M. This repped the top international opening of 2022, WB’s best pandemic-era offshore debut and its best internationally since Joker in October 2019 — as well as the 3rd biggest overseas pandemic-era debut in like-for-like markets behind Spider-Man: No Way Home and No Time To Die.
The global launch including domestic’s $134M was $258.2M, smashing WB’s pandemic-era records.

Matt Reeves’ upcoming film The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, will be the longest Dark Knight pic in history at a runtime of two hours and 55 minutes, Deadline has confirmed. The news first surfaced as the film received its PG-13 rating from the MPAA.
Set for release in the U.S. on March 4, The Batman is also one of the longest superhero films in history, boasting eight minutes’ worth of credits alone. It follows Avengers: Endgame, which came in at three hours and one minute, as the longest to hit theaters. And while Zack Snyder’s Justice League went straight to HBO Max last March, it’s the longest overall, at a runtime of four hours and two minutes.
The past Batman films closest to Reeves’ in length are Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, and Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which came in at the same length as the first Dark Knight.

DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes wrapped up with a 30-minute discussion with director Matt Reeves about The Batman, and it did not disappoint. Introduced by Robert Pattinson and moderated by DC FanDome host Aisha Tyler, the fast-talking Reeves covered quite a bit over the course of the panel, including giving fans a pretty clear idea of what sort of story they’re in for when The Batman debuts in October of next year.

As had been discussed before, The Batman is set during Bruce Wayne’s second year as a crimefighter, meaning it’s not an origin, but the Dark Knight is clearly still establishing himself and becoming the hero he’ll eventually become. As Reeves made clear, “He’s far from perfect.” While Batman is no longer a new presence in Gotham City when The Batman starts, he’s not having the affect on the...

Newcomer and recent Juilliard graduate Jayme Lawson has joined the cast of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” TheWrap has confirmed. Lawson’s role is being kept under wraps.
Robert Pattinson is set to star as the Dark Knight, with Reeves having taken over the directing gig after Ben Affleck stepped away from the project. Affleck was also originally expected to play Batman but then said he would be hanging up the cape for good.
Reeves has since described the film as a “defining” and “very personal” story about the Dark Knight, rather than an origin story in the vein of Frank Miller’s beloved “Year One” series.

In an interview with the New York Times that was published on Wednesday, Pattinson was asked what about Batman excites him, to which he said: “I love the director, Matt Reeves, and it’s a dope character.”

Jonah Hill is no longer in talks to join the cast of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The Oscar nominee was previously in talks to play the Riddler.
Robert Pattinson is set to star as the Dark Knight. Reeves took over as director after Ben Affleck stepped away from the role. Reeves has since described the film as a “defining” and “very personal” story about the Dark Knight, rather than an origin story in the vein of Frank Miller’s beloved “Year One” series.

Exclusive: We hear that the two-time Oscar nominee is no longer in talks to play the villain in Warner Bros. reboot of The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. Essentially talks broke down, which happens on big pics like these. We originally broke the news that Jonah Hill was in talks to play a villain in the movie, either Riddler or Penguin. We understand Warners is circling around new candidates already for one of those roles in the Matt Reeves-directed DC movie.
We heard that there was interest from the production in Seth Rogen for the role of the Penguin, however, but I hear no offers or talks occurred.
The current cast in addition to Pattinson includes Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon.
The Batman is set for release on June 25, 2021.
Mattson Tomlin and Reeves co-wrote the script for The Batman. Dylan Clark and Reeves produce. Michael E. Uslan is Ep.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the final trailer for director Todd Phillips Joker.
The film will be in theaters nationwide October 4.
Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
