- Film pioneer--a competitor of Thomas A. Edison--who invented the Bioscope, a motion picture projector. He also developed, in association with G.A. Smith, a color process called Kinemacolour. In the 1910s and early 1920s he produced a series of newsreels, as well as early nature and science documentaries.
