Alfred Sole, the prolific television production designer of Veronica Mars, Castle and MacGyver who had achieved cult-horror status with his 1976 film Alice, Sweet Alice featuring a 10-year-old Brooke Shields in a supporting role, died Feb. 14 at his home in Salt Lake City. He was 78.
His death was announced in a Facebook post by his cousin, filmmaker Dante Tomaselli. A cause of death was not specified.
Sole had already written and directed the 1972 sexually explicit, low-budget film Deep Sleep when several years later – and after the first film had been pulled from theaters on charges of obscenity – he turned to the horror genre. Originally titled Communion, Sole’s second movie premiered at the Chicago Film Festival in 1976 and was released by Allied Artists the following year as Alice, Sweet Alice, a name change disliked by Sole.

A young Brooke Shields meets an untimely end in this religious-themed proto slasher par excellence from director Alfred Sole.
On the day of her first communion, young Karen (Brooke Shields) is savagely murdered by an unknown assailant in a yellow rain mac and creepy translucent mask. But the nightmare is far from over – as the knife-wielding maniac strikes again and again, Karen s bereaved parents are forced to confront the possibility that Karen s wayward sister Alice might be the one behind the mask.
Bearing influences from the likes of Hitchcock, the then-booming Italian giallo film and more specifically, Nicolas Roeg s Don t Look Now, Alice, Sweet Alice is an absolutely essential – if often overlooked – entry in the canon of 1970s American horror.

Let me tell ya, creeps, nothin’ gets the ol’ Xiii’s motor hummin’ quite like a fright flick that is more akin to a fever dream than one of yer more pedestrian linear narratives. And for my money (roughly equivalent to $1.32 Us cash and a third party, out of state, presumably bad check for $16.45), no one does it better than Director Dante Tomaselli! So, before we begin our regularly scheduled revoltin’ reviews (this week featuring Varsity Blood, Jersey Shore Massacre and The Possession Of Michael King) and other assorted jackanappery, let’s check in with ol’ Dante to see what bats stir in his belfry of the damned!

Although Dante Tomaselli has only directed four features over the span of 13 years, I firmly believe the guy is one of the most refreshing and daring voices in the world of horror cinema. His surreal and challenging genre efforts are frequently hard to digest but always rewarding, which is why I was pleasantly surprised when his latest flick “Torture Chamber” finally bubbled to the surface. Like his previous endeavors, this one is well worth the wait. A word of warning: Tomaselli’s “Torture Chamber” is definitely a slow burn. If you’re looking for something fast-paced and straightforward, then you’re definitely casting your lures into the wrong cinematic waters. The director seems more interested in presenting an intense visual story than a traditional narrative, a fact that may turn off some casual horror fans within the first 15 minutes. You really have to commit yourself to a Tomaselli flick. Here...

About ten years ago I came across a dark, strange indie film with the rather simple title of Horror. Although not much to speak of in a narrative sense, Horror was indicative of a filmmaker who was interested in more than traditional shocks and obvious scares. On a purely visual scale, Horror was pretty interesting stuff, and it seems like writer / director Dante Tomaselli is following a similar format with his rough, odd, and sometimes impressively disconcerting Torture Chamber.
Slightly reminiscent of Don Coscarelli's classic Phantasm in the way it favors off-kilter visuals and "nightmare logic" instead of a more traditional narrative, Torture Chamber is about a blind mother and her two sons: one is a good-hearted priest; the other is the second coming of Satan. (Makes you wonder if these brothers had the same dad.) Eventually the brothers meet head-to-head with the fate of all humanity (not to mention satanity) in the balance,...

10. Poltergeist
Directed by Gil Kenan
Written by David Lindsay-Abaire
USA
Release Date: November 14th
Production recently wrapped on the Poltergeist remake with Gil Kenan (Monster House) in the director’s chair and Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) producing. Little is known as they continue to put the movie together in post-production, but we do have a few details, beginning with the cast which includes Sam Rockwell (Moon), Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris. We are also told that the psychic Angina (played originally by Zelda Rubinstein), isn’t going to be revived for the remake. Instead, they are replacing her character with a team of paranormal experts. Based on a vague plot summary, it sounds like the central plot points of the original movie are intact but other characters are added in, such as Carrigan Burke, a host of a TV show called Haunted House Cleaners, who stands in as the movie’s skeptic.

The big names in horror are often recognized by both the genre film community and mainstream entertainment culture. They are showered with accolades by horror fans and film critics, alike. Directors like John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, and Wes Craven have secured their place in history, but many talented directors go unrecognized for their hard work and noteworthy contributions to the genre. To remedy that, we have begun a recurring segment that gives much needed credit to horror directors that aren’t always shown the recognition they deserve. You can check out part one here. Now we present five more of our favorites…

Dante Tomaselli has been making movies since the late '90s. But, he has been garnering a lot of attention over the past seven years, with extremely intelligent, visceral, unrelenting films like Satan’s Playground and the much buzzed about Torture Chamber. Tomaselli is a director to watch. He is quickly becoming a household name to horror fans. He makes thought provoking, intense films that say much more than what we see on the surface. FEARnet caught up with the genre great to get the details on his latest film Torture Chamber and his upcoming film, a redux of Alice, Sweet Alice. Tomaselli filled us in on why scoring his projects is so important to him, when we can expect Torture Chamber to be released, why the budget for Alice is going to be his biggest yet, and why he decided to relocate Alice to the 1970s for his re-imagining.

Seventies slasher classic 'Alice Sweet Alice' is on the remake hit list with 'Satan's Playground' and 'Torture Chamber' helmer Dante Tomaselli behind the camera. And as preparations begin it seems that one of the leading ladies required for the redo has been cast. Kathryn Morris (below), better known for her role as Lilly Rush in long running CBS show 'Cold Case', has signed on to play the role of Mrs Spages the mother of Alice and murdered daughter Karen. Tomaselli spoke of the character recently to the Inquisitr stating that 'In keeping with the spirit of the original, Kathryn's character will look and feel similar, strikingly beautiful, perfectly sculpted dark hair, fiercely protective of her children and plagued by deep Catholic guilt.' The original hit screens way back in 1976 from writer/director Alfred Sole and starred Paula Sheppard and a young Brooke Shields....

The Pine Barrens of New Jersey and the Jersey Devil have been the inspiration for many films and books over the years. F. Paul Wilson’s collection of short stories, The Barrens and Others comes to mind, as does Dante Tomaselli’s film Satan’s Playground.
The appeal of this legend isn’t so much Mrs. Leeds, who gives birth to Satan’s child, but the location of said horrors. New Jersey’s Pine Barrens is a dense forest more than a million acres in size. As man becomes more urban and modern, nature becomes scarier and more isolating. What else could possibly be lurking out there?
Richard Vineyard (Stephen Moyer) is taking his family on a camping trip in order to scatter his father’s ashes on a lake in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, a place the two spent some happy times when Richard was a child.

We are delighted to take this horror picture that delivers the goods to the marketplace.” Torture Chamber stars Vincent Pastore (“The Sopranos”), Christie Sanford (“Desecration”), Lynn Lowry (The Crazies) and Ron Millkie (Friday the 13th).

Indie filmmaker Dante Tomaselli first made a splash with his short Desecration, which he adapted into the acclaimed feature of the same name. His follow-up films Horror and Satan's Playground continued to win him new admirers. And his next film, Torture Chamber, looks like it'll be another horror fan favorite, with shades of The Exorcist and the work of Dario Argento visible in its trailer -- which you can view after the jump. Here's the official synopsis of Dante Tomaselli's Torture Chamber: "A shocking family portrait. A boy oozing blood and saliva, bound by ropes and handcuffs, imprisoned in an animal cage. A deeply religious mother who believes her son is controlled by the devil. A Catholic priest...

If you’re a fan of esoteric low-budget horror and you haven’t heard of Dante Tomaselli, then shame on you, my friend. Shame on you. Although his endeavors are decidedly odd, all of them have unnerved me on one level or another. His 2002 effort “Horror” remains my favorite; the atmosphere is unrelentingly creepy, though I can’t really put my finger on why. The trailer for Tomaselli’s latest genre flick “Torture Chamber” gives me the same feeling, and I’m anxious to give it a whirl. We don’t get movies from this guy often enough, so every upcoming release is always a reason for a little excitement. Prepare your mind with this handy synopsis: Ominous chiller about an unholy bond between a mother and her two sons. A Catholic priest, devoted to saving his family, tries to cure his deranged younger brother — but 13-year-old Jimmy Morgan is...

"I just officially completed my final cut of Torture Chamber," Tomaselli tells us. "I finished a longer version this summer but felt it needed to be trimmed. The film was close to 2 hours, and now it's 1 hour 32 minutes, the right length. When I trimmed the footage, naturally the audio temperature changed. Since I'm the film's main composer, I spent a few months revamping the sound design, giving it a more aggressive, sinister soundscape."

Danny Lopes The Freddie Prinze Jr. of indie horror, Danny Lopes is the actor best known for his roles in all of director Dante Tomaselli's horror films including - Horror, Torture Chamber, Desecration & Satan's Playground. He has also worked as model over the years including his controversial choice to appear in the pages of Playgirl magazine. Danny Lopes strength as an actor is a credibility he brings to playing tortured characters that make bad choices often resulting in disastrous series of events unfolding. With Desecration, Danny Lopes scored his breakout role. With Horror he showed how far he had come along over the years and got to participate in a series of eye popping visuals that left a memorable impression on audiences. Satan's Playground brought a new dimensionality to his work as an actor and allowed him to branch out and show his strengths as an actor. With two new horror films,...

The careers of New Jersey-born actor Danny Lopes and writer/director Dante Tomaselli have been closely linked ever since Tomaselli got his hands on a camera. Lopes made his acting debut in Tomaselli’s first effort, 1999’s Desecration, and the actor has appeared in all of the Jersey auteur’s films since then—Horror, Satan’S Playground (pictured) and the upcoming Torture Chamber (see previous item here). With a recent move to La (though he will remain bicoastal), Lopes continues to spread his creative wings, producing and starring in a new slasher opus called The Locals (no relation to the New Zealand film of the same name; see teaser poster below and previous story here). Lopes tells Fango all about his latest screen stints, beginning with his collaborations with Tomaselli.

Director Dante Tomaselli (Satan’s Playground ) has just released a new one-sheet for his newest film, Torture Chamber, and it’s great (pictured right). The peaceful New England town of Smithville trembles in fear as Jimmy and his deadly young followers attack and abduct its residents — innocent and guilty alike — dragging their victims to an abandoned castle and subjecting them to grisly torments deep within its underground tunnels. Those who discover the terrible secret behind the disappearances and deaths don’t live long enough to tell it. The teacher, the doctor, even Jimmy’s own brother and mother will all confront their fates in the Torture Chamber.
The film stars Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos), Christie Sanford (Desecration), Lynn Lowry (The Crazies – original), and Ron Millkie (Friday the 13th). Also, here’s two new stills from the film, but they’re rather boring looking compared to that great poster.

Danny Lopes From WetWork Media and Clearwater Productions comes "The Locals". With The Locals, producers intend to reach out to horror fans of all ages. The Locals will play up to the moderness of the "found footage" horror sub-genre whiles seamlessly incoporating an 80's slasher angel with some cannibalism that harkens back to the popularity of this sub-genre in the 70's. The Locals will also play up to urban legends and tale talls while capturing the fondness some fans share for the VHS camcorder style of horror all in a cohesive narrative. In the process, The Locals is bound to give each different type of horror fan something to look forward to.
"The Locals" is being directed by Eric Anthony Pereira (who worked on Pirahna 3D's Second Unit), from his script. Danny Lopes, often seen in the visually stunning horror films of cult director Dante Tomaselli, will be expanding upon...

A couple of more new stills have come our way for indie maven Dante Tomaselli's new film Torture Chamber, and they are appropriately gory. Dare you take a peek?
Torture Chamber tells the tale of a boy possessed by an evil so powerful no priest can exorcise it. The boy comes back to his hometown after a failed attempt at it with an army of burned children at his command, whom he uses to abduct both innocent and guilty, dragging them to a nearby castle and subjecting them to all sorts of punishment. Bring it on!
The film is rockin' quite the cast, too, including Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos), Ed Neal (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), Lynn Lowry (The Crazies), Marilyn Burns (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), and Christie Sanford (Desecration).
"In terms of outright fear, I want to push the envelope right off the table. Religious fanaticism ... eternal damnation,...
