Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to “Joyride,” a road-trip comedy starring Oscar-winner Olivia Colman and Charlie Reid. The indie studio will release the film in theaters and on demand on Dec. 23.
The picture was directed by Emer Reynolds (“Songs for While I’m Away”) and written by Ailbhe Keogan (“Bad Sisters). The cast also includes Lochlann O Mearáin, Olwen Fouéré, Ruth McCabe, and Tommy Tiernan.
“Joyride” follows 12-year-old Mully (Reid), who, after fleeing his father, steals a taxi and is shocked to find a woman, Joy (Colman), in the back seat with a baby. Joy has decided to give her child away to a friend, and Mully needs some distance from his debt-ridden dad, who’s after the cash Mully has with him. So the middle-aged mother and adolescent embark on a journey across Ireland — a trip that causes a bond to form between them.

It’s 1994, and the people of Northern Ireland are nearly three decades into a violent conflict known as the Troubles. Civilians — thousands of which died during the fray — are generally divided between Protestant unionists, who want to keep the country under United Kingdom control, and Irish Catholics, who call for a united Ireland. Day-to-day life in Derry involve armed military checkpoints, customary bomb disposals, and the constant hum of danger. Family members are in prison. Others are dead. An end to the Troubles is in sight, but for the teenage girls attending Our Lady Immaculate College, this is the only life they’ve ever known. That it may come to an end right as they graduate only instills further anxiety over the responsibilities of adulthood.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 3 of “Derry Girls.”
Season 3 of “Derry Girls” opens with a dramatic montage set to the tune of uilleann pipes, depicting Erin Quinn (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla McCool (Louisa Clare Harland), Clare Devlin (“Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan), James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn) and Michelle Mallon (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) leaning pensively against walls, playing soccer and doing cartwheels, interspersed with shots of burning cars and soldiers carrying guns. It’s the sort of montage that belongs in a period piece about growing up in Ireland during the ’90s — and, as it’s revealed, the kind that Erin, Orla, Clare, James and Michelle want to be remembered for, as they’ve created it themselves using James’ video camera. “They told us we were young,” Erin intones in a comically ponderous voiceover, “yet we understood the enormity of it. We understood what was at stake. Our fear was replaced with something altogether more terrifying…...

No matter how hard the able cast work, this putative heartwarmer can never escape the far-fetched contrivance of its central conceit
Olivia Colman does her best with this fundamentally silly, contrived and implausible movie: a road-trip heartwarmer, or maybe heartmicrowaver. She plays Joy, a solicitor in a small and close-knit Irish town, who has just had a baby, and the strains of being a single mum have brought her to an emotional crisis. One morning she is in the back of a cab with her newborn, about to hand her child over to her best mate who lives nearby for official adoption and then drive on to Kerry airport for a holiday in Lanzarote, clearly in deep denial about her own nascent feelings. But then her taxi is stolen – with mum and baby in the back – by runaway teen Mully (newcomer Charlie Reid) who jumps into the driver’s seat...

There is a short video on YouTube of Gabriel Byrne being interviewed by the Irish comedian and actor Tommy Tiernan. “Do you think you’re a strange man?” asks Tiernan. “I do think I’m a strange man, yes,” replies Byrne without hesitation. The obvious comparison point for “Conversations with Friends” is “Normal People,” the other Hulu miniseries adapted from a Sally Rooney novel with the participation of director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Alice Birch, similarly full of literate, socially fraught and sometimes-naked young people in Ireland.
But “Conversations” also shares some DNA with the late, great HBO series “Girls” — and not just because Jemima Kirke, who played the mercurial Jessa on that show, resurfaces here in older, wiser garb. Though the new show isn’t as barbed or hilarious as Lena Dunham’s controversy magnet, it’s similarly attuned to twentysomething tumult, and how it affects the life of an aspiring writer — to a point, anyway.
Another similarity to “Girls” is that the central young writer’s life has plenty of privilege, even if she doesn’t realize it. Frances (Alison Oliver) comes from a relatively humble background, a child of divorce...

On the most basic level, it makes sense that Hulu’s “Conversations With Friends” would try to echo what made its “Normal People” adaptation so successful. Once again enlisting director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Alice Birch, and once again starring a female actor (Alison Oliver) who resembles author Sally Rooney and a male one specifically poised to become a breakout thirst object (Joe Alwyn), “Conversations With Friends” follows the “Normal People” pattern so closely that it often feels more like a faded impression rather than its own series. In trying to replicate what made the “Normal People” adaptation work, with the same creative team to boot, this version of “Conversations With Friends” becomes strangely bland, as if leeched of all its flavor.
Rooney’s “Conversations With Friends” — her great first novel, about a college student whose relationship with a married man becomes all-consuming — bears similarities to her second (“Normal People”). Nevertheless,...

Channel 4 dropped a “Derry Girls” trailer for its third and final season on Thursday, which shows the girls freaking out about their upcoming Gcse tests.
The series, which is set in Northern Ireland in the 1990s, stars Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Erin, Louisa Harland as Orla, Nicola Coughlan as Clare, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell as Michelle, and Dylan Llewellyn as James.
The synopsis for the upcoming season, which doesn’t yet have a premiere date: “While there’s hope in the air that The Troubles may finally be over, their troubles are only just getting started as they get ever closer to adulthood.”
The trailer features everyone yelling for Gerry (Tommy Tiernan) and the introduction of Damien Molony’s plumber, who has the women in a tizzy. “If you’re that hot, you should at least have the common decency to be a bit thick,” says Aunt Sarah (Kathy Kiera Clarke...

A first look at the third and final season of “Derry Girls” is finally here — and just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled the first Season 3 still and trailer for the show, which garnered global popularity via Netflix. The drama is created and written by Lisa McGee, who mined her own experiences growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
While Season 1 observed the gang navigating their teens in 1990s Derry against a backdrop of The Troubles, Season 2 charted the group navigating their parents, parties, love interests and school against the backdrop of a precarious peace process. In Season 3 — which still doesn’t have a launch date on Channel 4 — viewers will see that while Northern Ireland is growing up, “this gang of eejits certainly aren’t anytime soon.”

Ding ding, everybody off the Taskmaster bus! New passengers incoming! One lucky winner has skipped away merrily with the Taskmaster’s gleaming head as a prize and plenty of time to prepare for the inevitable Series 11-15 Champion of Champions special. Meanwhile the other four have skipped away safe in the knowledge that nobody is ever again likely to ask them to sit on a cake.

“Derry Girls,” the popular Channel 4 comedy set in 1990s Northern Ireland, is ending after its upcoming Season 3, creator Lisa McGee announced on Twitter on Thursday.
Season 3, which is heading into production, will mark the end of the show, but a trio of seasons was always the plan, McGee said.
“It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series. ‘Derry Girls’ is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly…very slowly…start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of time,” McGee wrote. “‘Derry Girls’ is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved.

"Awaken your magic!" Yay! One of the best animated films from last year is now playing in cinemas again. GKids has re-released Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart's magical adventure Wolfwalkers in select theaters in the US, with more venues playing it nationwide coming up this weekend. A young apprentice hunter and her father journey to Ireland to help wipe out the last wolf pack. But everything changes when she befriends a free-spirited girl from a mysterious tribe rumored to transform into wolves by night. Featuring the voices of Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whitaker, Sean Bean, Simon McBurney, Tommy Tiernan, Jon Kenny, John Morton, and Maria Doyle Kennedy. I totally adore this film, along with everything else Tomm Moore has made! I'm happy it's playing again after first opening in the fall. As wonderful as this film is, it's even better on the big screen! If you can safely get to a...

"You're a wolf when you sleep... a girl when you're awake." Apple has released a full-length trailer for the animated feature film titled Wolfwalkers, the latest project from acclaimed Irish animation filmmaker Tomm Moore co-directing with concept artist Ross Stewart. In a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn, comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn saves a wild native girl, Mebh, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwakers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy. The voice cast is lead by Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whitaker, Sean Bean, Simon McBurney, Tommy Tiernan, Jon Kenny, John Morton, and Maria Doyle Kennedy. This premiered at TIFF and it's absolutely wonderful - I raved about it in my review.

“Wolfwalkers” directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart didn’t conceive of the idea for their animated, Irish folklore parable until 2013 as they were finishing their previous film “Song of the Sea.” But even though the film is set in Medieval times, the history has only become more prescient.
“Wolfwalkers” comes from the animation team at Cartoon Saloon, which developed both “Song of the Sea” and “The Secret of Kells,” both Oscar-nominated films about Irish folklore. Their latest completes a trilogy of sorts, but the directors told TheWrap that it stands alone in how it speaks to the problems of today.
“The 17th Century and sadly hundreds of years later has some similar stuff where we have our protector is a fairly recognizable strong man, autocratic leader kind of ruling with fear and division, and also the destruction of the forests for agricultural use and also to symbolically tame the indigenous...

Comedian Omid Djalili, The Thick Of It's Rebecca Front and Tommy Tiernan will also appear in the third series, which will air this Christmas. As previously announced, Joanna Lumley will appear in and direct an episode based on her modelling days. "Directing an episode of Little Crackers was utterly wonderful," said the actress. "I had a brilliant team behind me and a hand-picked cast who couldn't have been better. "The story is based on my life as a model in the '60s and it was fascinating and thrilling to see the London scene I knew then being recreated (more)...

Prepare for the latest battle of the princes. John Simm is first in the field at the Sheffield Crucible; then Rory Kinnear enters the running in a Nicholas Hytner production for the National Theatre. The Thrill of it All

An Irish film-maker has called on U.S. authorities to ban Irish comic Tommy Tiernan . Louis Lentin, the former head of drama at the national broadcaster, RTÉ, said Tiernan should be denied a visa for his shows in the U.S. in October. Lentin said Tiernan's comments at the Electric Picnic festival in County Laois were "disgraceful," and “extraordinarily racist." "He doesn’t realise what he has said. He doesn’t realise the seriousness of it. You can’t make a joke about the Holocaust and just because you say it is a joke does not make it funny or acceptable,” Lentin said. In the meantime, Tiernan's two shows in San Francisco have been postponed due to a "scheduling conflict." Tiernan was due to perform four shows in Los Angeles and San Francisco next month but the San Francisco shows are now on hold....

MONTREAL -- The Just for Laughs festival wrapped a week of carnival gaiety on the streets of downtown Montreal and heat-seeking performances by American comics looking for film and TV deals. For the most part, comics hoping for a big hug from U.S. network executives otherwise enamored with reality series these days were not rewarded with the lucrative deals typical of the gold-rush 1990s. No development deals or agency signings were reported as the English-language section of Just for Laughs wrapped Sunday. Instead, comics tended to convert gags into gigs as Jeff Caldwell earned an appearance on Craig Ferguson's The Late Late Show, and Irish comic Tommy Tiernan was booked onto David Letterman.

"With this year's festival we continue to present an unmatched lineup of programming for fans and the industry to discover," said JFL chief operating officer Bruce Hills in unveiling the key elements of the program for the annual event, which takes place July 14-24. Hills also promised more standup performers than ever before. In one important change to previous festivals, JFL this year will feature a series of special events celebrating some of the biggest shows on TV.
