Recording artist Dua Lipa just released her latest album this past week, so there's no better time for the pop star to pull double duty as the host and musical guest of "Saturday Night Live." Of course, her first time taking on the honor unfortunately comes after Ryan Gosling hosted a banger of an episode, packed with viral gems like the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch. But if your expectations were firmly in check, then you probably enjoyed this lukewarm, fairly amusing but not raucously hilarious episode of "SNL."
Thankfully, Dua Lipa turned out to be a solid host alongside her musical guest duties. She was game to jump into a variety of characters, didn't severely derail any sketches with subpar performances, and she was even willing to make jokes at her own expense during the monologue. However, the sketches were not exactly of the highest quality, and though Dua Lipa did her best,...

Dua Lipa went all in on Saturday Night Live for the NBC show’s May 4 episode.“I’m here, I’m hosting, I’m performing, I’m making the wigs, I’m dealing Adderall to the writers, I’m doing it all,” she said in her opening monologue. “So tonight, I promise you, I’m gonna give you everything.” She also dealt out Radical Optimism — the name of her new album — to audience members in tough spots… though she couldn’t help South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (played by Heidi Gardner). Check out highlights from Lipa’s episode below. Kenan Thompson’s Columbia dad supports other people’s kids protesting In a discussion with other college parents in a cold open, Kenan Thompson’s Alphonse was supportive of the pro-Palestine protests taking over campuses across the country… as long as his daughter, a Columbia student, wasn’t one of the protestors.

There is such a thing as getting too much press, it turns out, and Jerry Seinfeld definitely hit that point as he dropped by this week’s Saturday Night Live.
The comedian and Seinfeld star paid a surprise visit to SNL’s Weekend Update midway through a very long press tour for his Netflix movie Unfrosted. (Streaming now, he’d like you to know!) Colin Jost introduced him simply as “a man who did too much press,” and a harried Seinfeld sat down looking exhausted and disheveled. He didn’t even know which show he was on: “Is this a podcast?...

As college campus protests ignite across the U.S. over the Israel-Palestine conflict, “SNL” weighed in with its cold open this week as Kenan Thompson played an incredulous parent of a Columbia University student.
Michael Longfellow acted as a reporter for Spectrum News New York 1 on “Community Affairs,” shining light on the ongoing protests throughout the country and their impact. Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner and Thompson were seated as parents weighing in on the state of the nation on college campuses. Longfellow’s character says, “College students have been protesting Israel’s actions in Gaza on campus across the nation. Tonight, we’ll be discussing with my guests who are parents of college students here.
Day played a New School parent, Gardner played a Hunter College mom and Thompson played a Columbia University dad. Longfellow launched into his questions, asking the parents how they felt about the protests on campus.

Saturday Night Live tackled the thorny issue of college protests this week — and thankfully, Kenan Thompson was there to find some laughs in it.
In Saturday’s cold open, Thompson played Alphonse, the father of a student at Columbia University who was a guest on a local talk show and initially came out as supportive of the pro-Palestinian protests. But when the host asked about his own daughter being in the protests, Alphonse just laughed: “Alexis Vanessa Roberts better have her butt in class.” He’s fine with other people’s kids protesting, but not his kid: “She ain’t talking about ‘Free this,...

Saturday Night Live‘s latest cold open centered on Columbia University’s handling of the pro-Palestinian protests on campus amid the Israel–Hamas war.
During the sketch, Mikey Day, Kenan Thompson and Heidi Gardner played concerned parents of students participating in the protests.
Last week, hundreds of demonstrators were arrested after the school’s president called the New York Police Department to help restore order on campus. Police cleared the university’s Hamilton Hall after protesters occupied the administration building earlier in the day.
After being asked their thoughts on the protests, Gardner initially responded, “It’s been tough. Now, I’m all for free speech, but I don’t understand what they think they’re accomplishing and that’s really putting a strain on me and my daughter’s relationship.”
Thompson later shared his thoughts: “Nothing makes me prouder than young people using their voices to fight for what they believe in.

Saturday Night Live tackled the college campus pro-Palestinian protests by taking aim at high education’s high tuition costs and questionable payoff.
Rather than tackle the Gaza issue itself, SNL instead went with the Pov of parents, featuring a spoof of a NY1 talk show roundtable of parents concerned about their children taking part in the demonstrations.
While two of the parents earnestly expressed worry over their kids but acknowledged their right to express themselves, Kenan Thompson played a Alphonso Roberts, a parent with a daughter at Columbia University, and a father who will have none of the disruption.
His daughter, he said, “better have her butt in class. Let me find out if she is in one of those damn tents instead of the dorm room I pay for.”
He added, “I am all in favor of you all’s kids protesting. My kids know better.”

Showrunners are the creative visionaries of a series.
They might not be the original creators, but they cover all aspects of the creative elements, evolve the show's vision, and decide where the story and character arcs will go.
They run the writing rooms, head the development, hire writers, and ensure actors are kept happy and that the budget is not exceeded.
Series are usually a collective effort, with writers giving their thoughts, but showrunners have the final say and are essential.
Where would the industry be without people like Shonda Rhimes, Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), and Ryan Murphy?
It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.
If the reason you fell in love with a series is altered or gone one day, then the connection created is absent,...

There is a lot of hype surrounding this month’s The Fall Guy, and considering it’s a tribute to the world of cinematic stunt work, it’s no surprise that Tuesday’s Los Angeles premiere pulled through, with stuntmen jumping through glass and leaping off balconies to dazzle the crowd before the movie even started. But Ryan Gosling had his own moment, reprising his runaway rendition of Beavis (to Mikey Day’s Butt-Head), bringing the metalhead slackers to one place you’d never expect to see them.
Appearing at The Fall Guy’s premiere, Gosling and Day stepped out as the characters, dressed from enormous head to toe just as they were on Saturday Night Live last month – although it is still a little bothersome that their Beavis and Butt-Head are in shirts that say “Death Rock” and “Skull”, since Beavis would always rock a Metallica shirt and...

Beavis and Butt-Head made an unexpected red carpet debut at the Los Angeles premiere of “The Fall Guy” on Tuesday night.
Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day appeared on the carpet together dressed as live-action versions of Beavis and Butt-Head, respectively, from the infamous “Saturday Night Live” sketch.
After initially posing for photos in a mint green monochromatic suit, Gosling disappeared while his “Fall Guy” co-star Emily Blunt, along with the rest of the cast and crew, did interviews. As host of the April 13 episode, Ryan Gosling brought “Saturday Night Live” its biggest Peacock audience ever when accounting for seven days of viewership.
While an exact number of Peacock viewers is not available, the episode’s seven-day total across all platforms is 8.9 million — up from the 1.7 million viewers who tuned in night-of. This comes from a combination of Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on NBC and NBCUniversal’s own data regarding streams on Peacock.
This represents the show’s best seven-day viewership since December of 2021, when Billie Eilish served as both host and musical guest. Additionally, the episode rose from 0.3 rating among adults age 18-49 on April 13 to a seven-day rating of 2.0, the show’s highest since Dave Chappelle hosted in November 2022 with Foo Fighters as musical guest.

Ryan Gosling is not a dumbass; heh heh, heh, heh heh heh, heh! Thanks in large part to a “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch that went viral, Gosling’s “Saturday Night Live” episode is the most-watched “SNL” since late 2021.
Counting one week’s worth of delayed viewing (which is fine and normal but really helps when something goes viral) and all platforms, the April 13, 2024 telecast of “SNL” drew 8.9 million total viewers, according to NBC. That’s the most since Billie Eilish hosted the program on December 11, 2021.
The Gosling episode, for which he was promoting film “The Fall Guy,” is the most-watched “SNL” episode ever on Peacock. Gosling’s musical guest was Chris Stapleton.
On YouTube, 46 million users have “viewed a portion of the episode,” NBC said, the most since 2020. That’s an important specificity given the viral nature of the “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch. In all, there were 170 million social-video views...

Saturday Night Live turned in some comedy gold with a recent Beavis and Butt-Head sketch.
And the segment was so funny that the host and several cast members broke into laughter on live television.
The Beavis and Butt-Head sketch has gone viral, partially because of how good host Ryan Gosling was in the part. But the humor was also elevated by several cast members breaking character.
Sometimes, an SNL sketch can break down if the people in it can’t stick to their characters. But other times, having the host break character can add to viewer enjoyment.
Ryan Gosling is someone already known for breaking character on SNL. He has done it in the past, and it happened again several times during other sketches on the April 13 episode.
But one person kept it together during the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch – Saturday Night Live veteran Kenan Thompson.

One of the most impressive parts of the April 13 episode of “Saturday Night Live” was Kenan Thompson’s ability not to break during the hilarious “Beavis and Butt-Head.” During the episode, a NewsNation anchor (Heidi Gardner) attempts to interview a professor (Thompson) about AI, but the conversation is interrupted when Thompson’s professor notices that two audience members, played by host Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day, look exactly like Beavis and Butt-Head.
While Gardner and Gosling couldn’t help but laugh through the duration of the sketch — which has been viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube in the five days since its air — Thompson somehow kept a straight face.
That was because he broke so hard during dress rehearsal, he tells Variety.
“It’s hit or miss. Sometimes I can hold it, sometimes I can’t. I got lucky on ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ that I cracked so hard at dress rehearsal,...

Eva Mendes praised Ryan Gosling’s Cuban accent in the “Can’t Tonight” Saturday Night Live sketch.
Gosling co-starred in the sketch with Marcello Hernández as two men trying to convince their friend, played by Kenan Thompson, to go out with them.
“Coño! My Cuban Papi made this Cuban Mami so happy with this!! Years of hanging out with my Dad paid off,” Mendes wrote on Instagram, sharing the sketch video.
Mendes, who is of Cuban descent and in a relationship with Gosling, acknowledged that Gosling picked up the accent by hanging out with her father.
Gosling and Hernández have heavy Cuban accents in the sketch, prompting the waitress (Sarah Sherman) to ask where the three guys were from.
Thompson’s character explains, “I’m Dominican, and he’s Cuban [Hernández], and he [Gosling] is from Tennessee, but ever since he married a Cuban woman, he is different.”

Eva Mendes is sharing her thoughts on one of partner Ryan Gosling‘s Saturday Night Live sketch.
Over the weekend, the 43-year-old Barbie actor hosted the NBC sketch show and in one skit, Ryan played a man from Tennessee who developed a Cuban accent after marrying a Cuban woman.
“A Cuban wife can change you,” Ryan says in the sketch, as he goes back and forth between stereotyped American and Cuban accents.
A few days after Ryan‘s episode aired, Eva – who is Cuban – reacted the sketch.

Eva Mendes offered her stamp of approval on Tuesday for husband Ryan Gosling’s Saturday Night Live performance, shouting out his particularly relevant sketch in which he spoke with a Cuban accent.

Twenty years in, Kenan Thompson is the longest serving cast member on Saturday Night Live, but he likely owes part of his success on the show to his early work on another sketch comedy series, Nickelodeon’s All That, which premiered thirty years ago today on April 16th 1994.
Created as a Saturday Night Live for kids by Mike Tollin and Brian Robbins, All That consisted of comedy sketches performed by a cast of kids, alongside performances from some of the biggest musical acts of the day.
As it happened. Thompson—then fresh off his screen debut in D2: The Mighty Ducks—was the very first person All That viewers saw onscreen in a cold open:
Much like his SNL career, Thompson’s time on All That was marked by a large number of characters including Pierre Escargot, Superdude, and a Bill Cosby impression that he’d later bring to SNL.

This past weekend, Ryan Gosling hosted a spectacular episode of "Saturday Night Live." There wasn't a single bad sketch among the bunch that debuted on the staple late-night comedy series, but there was one clear standout that had pretty much everyone involved breaking.
During a News Nation panel about artificial intelligence featuring Kenan Thompson as an expert on the subject being interviewed by Heidi Gardner, a distraction emerges in the audience in the form of two young men who happen to look uncannily like live-action versions of the animated characters Beavis and Butt-Head, from Mike Judge's comedy series of the same name. If you need a refresher or you missed the sketch over the weekend, take a look below:
Gosling appeared as Beavis, complete with an elongated, prosthetic nose and a big blonde pompadour haircut. After he's moved to avoid any more distraction, he's replaced with Mikey Day as Butt-Head,...

Amid new scrutiny on child performers in the wake of the Quiet on Set docuseries, former Disney actress Christy Carlson Romano is opening up about the moments when she and her mother had to speak up on the set of Disney show Even Stevens, which Romano starred in as a teen.
In a conversation on Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast, which also included Bialik’s fellow Blossom alum Jenna von Oÿ, Bialik asked the former child stars about times in which they had to assert themselves during production and what “worked well” in managing to be heard.
Romano noted that there were a couple of times when she was able to have a say in the production choices. One was when writers would come to her to draw from her own experiences while writing for her character, Ren. “They would be like, ‘Hey, you just turned 16. Are boys interesting to you?...

Saturday Night Live‘s Heidi Gardner said she tried mighty hard not to break character during last weekend’s now-viral Beavis and Butt-Head sketch, but seeing fellow cast member Mikey Day in full Butt-Head mode was just too much.
“They were in costume for the earlier rehearsals on Saturday with their wigs and outfits but not the prosthetics,” Gardner told Vulture about Day and Ryan Gosling, who played Beavis. “The dress rehearsal was when the prosthetics made their debut — the noses and the mouths. I didn’t know about Mikey’s exposed gums and teeth.
“When I looked and saw Mikey in the dress rehearsal, I lost it,” she continued. “I was shocked. I’m thinking about it right now and laughing. I recovered and tried to tell myself in between dress and the live show, ‘you can’t laugh like that again.’”

It got as far as dress rehearsal, but the powers that be at Saturday Night Live opted not to include a Weekend Update visit from Kenan Thompson’s O.J. Simpson on this weekend’s live show.
According to multiple tipsters who were in the audience at dress rehearsal, the segment saw Thompson-as-o.J. dressed as an angel, complete with a halo above his head, telling Colin Jost about his new life in heaven.

He said he was back to the physical shape he was in as a professional football player, but whenever he tries to score, he’s off by a yard and has to return to the other end of the field.

Even though Ryan Gosling popped up during Kristin Wiig's induction into the Five Timers Club in last weekend's episode of "Saturday Night Live," the "Barbie" star had actually only hosted the late night sketch comedy show a couple times. Despite having just that pair of hosting stints under his belt, Gosling had already proven he was a reliable and hilarious host. But even with expectations high, Gosling made this third round hosting "Saturday Night Live" an absolute banger, delivering one of the best episodes that I've ever seen. And it wasn't just because of guest appearances by former "SNL" cast member (and recent host) Kate McKinnon or a cameo by Gosling's "The Fall Guy" co-star Emily Blunt. Even without those bonuses, this episode of "SNL" was simply phenomenal.
So let's not waste anymore time. Come with us as we dig into the highs and non-existent lows of Ryan Gosling's latest "Saturday Night Live.

When Ryan Gosling was first announced to host "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, most of us expected a giggle-heavy affair. His first two hosting gigs, from "Close Encounter" to "Terrezano's," had Gosling breaking in nearly every live sketch, so it was no surprise when Gosling broke constantly last night as well. What we didn't see coming was just how much the rest of the cast broke, especially in the sketch where a serious intellectual panel is interrupted by two guys in the audience who inexplicably look like Beavis and Butt-Head.
First we're introduced to Beavis, played by Ryan Gosling, who insists that he's not pulling a prank, that he's never heard of Beavis before, and has never been told how much he looks like him. It's an unlikely story, but Heidi Gardener's Bobbi Moore and Kenan Thompson's Professor Hemming are willing to move past it, so long as "Beavis...

Known for breaking character and cracking up Saturday Night Live cast members in his previous two hosting stints on the NBC sketch program, Ryan Gosling stayed true to himself tonight, laughing in every skit he was in, much to the delight of the studio audience, and challenging his co-stars to keep a straight face — even seasoned veterans like Kenan Thompson.
The tone was set in the cold open, reuniting Gosling and Kate McKinnon for a third Close Encounters sketch, in which host Gosling could not stop laughing as McKinnon was demonstrating how aliens observed Gosling character’s private parts close and personal during their alleged abduction. She chuckled a few times too, with the rest trying to hide their smiles.
Then came The Engagement skit, in which Gosling played a newly engaged man having serious second thoughts about his decision to propose.

One of the sketches where most of the Saturday Night Live cast completely broke character tonight was in the Beavis & Butt-Head parody.
Heidi Gardner played a NewsNation journalist holding a town hall about A.I., with Kenan Thompson playing an MIT professor.
As the pair discussed A.I., Thompson’s character was distracted by an audience member who looked strikingly similar to Beavis, the animated character created and voiced by Mike Judge. Host Ryan Gosling wore Beavis’ signature flat-top blond hair, a blue T-shirt, and shorts.
“There’s a gentleman in your audience who is strikingly similar to Beavis from the cartoon Beavis and Butt-Head,” Thompson’s character said.
