David Harbour and Pedro Pascal are set to appear in a new limited HBO series called "My Dentist's Murder Trial," Variety announced on July 26. The show will be based on a New Yorker article by James Lasdun, "My Dentist's Murder Trial: Adultery, False Identities, and a Lethal Sedation," which unfurled the true saga of how dentist Dr. Gilberto Nunez was charged with (and eventually acquitted of) the murder of his friend Thomas Kolman.
Harbour and Pascal are also both executive producing the series, which has been acquired by HBO, and the script will be written by Steve Conrad, who will also executive produce and direct the first episode. Other executive producers include Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Bruce Terris, Molly Allen, James Lasdun, and MGM Television.
Harbour most recently appeared in the fourth season of "Stranger Things," making a triumphant return as Hopper after being presumed dead at the end of the previous season.

HBO is developing My Dentist’s Murder Trial, a limited series, starring and executive produced by David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Pedro Pascal.
Written by Steve Conrad, who is set to direct the pilot episode, My Dentist’s Murder Trial is inspired by James Lasdun’s 2017 New Yorker article “My Dentist’s Murder Trial: Adultery, false identities, and a lethal sedation.”
The true crime story chronicled in the article centers on Dr. Gilberto Nunez who in 2015 was indicted for killing his friend Thomas Kolman by getting him “to ingest a substance that caused his death.” There were also two forgery counts, including Nunez posing as a C.I.A. agent. Nunez, who had had an affair with Kolman’s wife Linda, stood trial in 2018 where he was found not guilty of murder but guilty on fraud charges, which led to a prison sentence.

The limited series “Perpetual Grace Ltd” aired over the summer from June to August, so it might have fallen under the radar as the Emmys for the previous TV season were still being decided, but with the Golden Globes and SAG Awards approaching it might be time for awards voters to say “Grace,” especially with a showcase performance by Ben Kingsley at the heart of it.
Created by Steven Conrad and Bruce Terris (Amazon‘s “Patriot“), the series follows a young grifter (Jimmi Simpson) who tries to prey on Pastor Byron Brown (Kingsley), but the pastor is more dangerous than he bargained for. It’s a villainous role that has been compared to Kingsley’s turn in “Sexy Beast” (2001), which earned him one of his four Oscar nominations and one of his eight Golden Globe noms. He plays Pastor Brown “with a slight tinge of menace from the very beginning” that is “quickly” unleashed.

Epix drama “Perpetual Grace Ltd” brings a modern noir take on lawlessness and duplicity to the Old West. To play up a sense of timelessness, the crew mixed ingenuity and modern technology in realizing creators Steve Conrad and Bruce Terris’ seemingly simple idea of using black and white for the series’ key flashback scenes.
Set decorator Adrian Segura used the monochrome setting on his iPhone to get an idea of how things would look on camera. “The challenge was definitely to deliver a good set in color that was also going to shoot well in black and white,” he says.
The series wraps its 10-episode first season Aug. 4. It stars Jimmi Simpson as a young grifter and Ben Kingsley as his target, a pastor who turns out to be far more dangerous than he appears.

“Noir is a genre that Roger Ebert described as being about characters who are smart enough to hatch a plan but not smart enough to pull it off… we adhere to that essentially,” said Steve Conrad, executive producer and showrunner of Epix new noir thriller, Perpetual Grace, Ltd.
While the crime drama may contain remnants of the noir tone, Conrad spoke on how the show bends the narrative in that with traditional neo-noir stories “the characters often turn on each other pretty quickly and it becomes an every man for themselves event. We’ve figured that the time that we share with the audience the demonstration will be that it is not material to succeeding or surviving. They’ll come to depend on each other pretty quickly. So it doesn’t follow that noir engineering.”
He continued, “The characters will start to love each other and start to support each...

Behold, summer! Now that spring (and the accompanying closing of this year’s Emmys eligibility) is in the rearview mirror, the warmer months bring plenty of new programming. Some are literary adaptations, others are American versions of global series, and one is based on a show that doesn’t actually exist at all. June is a treasure trove.

MGM-owned premium cable network Epix has, for a few years, been working to define itself as an outlet for original programming. Their latest attempt, “Perpetual Grace, Ltd.,” seeks the audience’s favor by cloaking itself both the familiar. The show’s cast includes familiar faces like Jimmi Simpson of “Westworld,” Terry O’Quinn of “Lost,” and Oscar nominees Sir Ben Kingsley and Jacki Weaver; its giddy amorality-in-the-American-sticks formula seems borrowed from “Ozark,” which itself owes a debt to “Breaking Bad.” Little here feels new, and it’s not a skillful enough pastiche to demand you find Epix on your dial.

Epix describes its upcoming 10-part series “Perpetual Grace, Ltd” as a “modern noir drama.” But Jimmi Simpson’s way of pitching the show, which also stars Ben Kingsley and Jacki Weaver, might offer you just a little more insight into what’s in store for viewers who tune in for the premiere this Sunday. Or possibly make it even less clear, but more intriguing.
“It’s like a stylized ‘The City of Lost Children.’ And then it pauses and tells you about love and how real it is. It just lands, too,” the “Westworld” alum told TheWrap during an interview at the Television Critics Association press tour in February.
Ok, let’s rewind so you understand a little better why Simpson is comparing “Perpetual Grace” to a 1995 sci-fi, surrealist film starring Ron Perlman, which tells the story of a scientist who kidnaps children to steal their dreams, in hopes that they slow his aging process.

If the last few decades of entertainment history has taught us two things, it’s that you shouldn’t mess with a character played by Ben Kingsley and you really shouldn’t mess with a character played by Jacki Weaver. The core of “Perpetual Grace, Ltd” is watching one would-be grifter discover these empirical truths for himself.
Jimmi Simpson plays James, a wandering con man who stumbles on a pair of potential prey he couldn’t have accounted for: Ma (Weaver) and Pa (Kingsley). As the husband and wife leaders of a church, the two have been perpetuating an extensive scheme of their own by slowly pilfering money from their parishioners for years.

The series follows a young grifter named James, played by Jimmi Simpson, as he attempts to prey upon Kingsley’s Pastor Byron Brown, who turns out to be a dangerous guy.
Kingsley said he’d been talking to his reps about “the possibility of having a wonderful leading role in a great TV series” when “lo and behold, it fell into our laps.”
As to the “careful what one wishes for” part, Kingsley called it “grindingly hard work,” in which they shoot about triple the two pages per day that the feature film world sets as its pace.
“However, the quality of the writing sustains us, and the dignity…of our director sustains us,” He said.
