The small screen adaptation of Cruel Intentions will stream on Prime Video, and details have landed for the show.
Cruel Intentions is a seminal teen film of the 1990s, planting the story of Dangerous Liasons firmly in late twentieth century youth culture, with star making turns from Selma Blair, Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon
It’s also the film that helped launch the big screen career of Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Now, Cruel Intentions is heading to the small screen in a fresh modern take (we assume). Many versions of a television adaptation have been attempted in the past, including a 2016 pilot which saw Gellar reprise her role, but ultimately none of them were commissioned.
At one stage, a television version did see the light of day, but it was released as Cruel Intentions 2, thanks to some hasty re-editing in post-production (and it didn’t share the lead cast of the film).
Anyway,...

Lovecraft may have argued that the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown, but there’s no denying the intellectual thrills of unraveling a good old-fashioned mystery. After all, some answers can serve to make a story even scarier, and I have a personal soft spot for horror yarns about grizzled investigators attempting to piece together a morbid puzzle.
This is precisely why I’ve been a fan of the Saw franchise from the very beginning, with the detective angle behind all the blood and guts making this gruesome franchise stand out amongst other so-called “torture-porn” movies.
And with the long-anticipated Saw X on the horizon this week, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best investigative horror films ahead of Jigsaw’s latest killing spree. After all, sometimes it’s fun to figure out exactly why our protagonists are going...

The Creative Coalition’s annual Humanitarian Awards takes place the week of the Primetime Emmys — but even though the big show was pushed to January, the benefit luncheon still took place on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the La Peer Hotel rooftop in West Hollywood, attracting a wide range of honorees and presenters.
The Humanitarian Awards recognizes talent who donate their time, resources and their celebrity to promote worthy social causes. This year, honors went to Jason Alexander, Pauline Chalamet, Billy Eichner, Wendie Malick, Arian Moayed and Lena Waithe, as well as Josefina López, who was saluted with the Your Voice Carries Weight award. Presenters included Alyssa Milano, Cazzie David, Lawrence O’Donnell, Gloria Calderón Kellet, Samantha Hanratty, Debbie Levin, Bradley Whitford and Darnell Moore.
Variety co-editor-in-chief Cynthia Littleton hosted the luncheon, which opened with remarks from The Creative Coalition CEO Robin Bronk; both cited the org’s continued fight for arts funding and education.

Laura Benanti has left Amazon’s upcoming TV adaptation of “Cruel Intentions.”
The Tony-winner was set to appear in the recurring guest star role of Caroline’s (Sarah Catherine Hook) mother, Claudia.

King of Queens focused on Carrie and Doug Heffernan as they navigated married life after Carrie’s father, Arthur Spooner, moved into their basement. While the series, at its core, was about marriage and family, several important supporting characters rounded out the cast. Doug, in particular, had several friends deeply involved in his daily life. One of those friends, Richie Iannucci, was a regular at the Heffernan house until he suddenly wasn’t. Richie disappeared and was never spoken about again. So, what exactly happened? Larry Romano, the actor who took on the role, asked to be let out of his contract to pursue another part. It didn’t turn into anything big, though.

As a Western based on real events, "Tombstone" was made with an eye toward historical accuracy, with all but one actor, for instance, growing out a real mustache, to be waxed and curled up in accordance with period photos. Not everything that transpires in "Tombstone" is in line with what really happened, however. The movie documents the feud that erupted between the family of "legendary lawman" Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) and a gang of local cowboys in Tombstone, Arizona, in the late 1800s, with tensions spilling over into the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the ensuing Earp Vendetta Ride. Unsurprisingly, though, in compressing a multi-year story down to 130 minutes, "Tombstone" takes some liberties with the timeline of events.
According to MovieWeb, much of the colorful dialogue in "Tombstone" — such as the line from Val Kilmer's tuberculosis-ridden Doc Holliday, "You're a daisy if you do" — is pulled from real newspaper reports.

In 1993, "Tombstone" assembled a cast for the ages to tell the story of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The throwback Western, led by Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer -- in what is perhaps Kilmer's best performance -- showcases a lot of tough guys in cowboy hats as it dramatizes real events that took place before and after the gunfight in Tombstone, Arizona, circa 1881. Special effects make the gunfight seem real, but thirty years later, in the age of "Ted Lasso," perhaps the most impressive effect on display in "Tombstone" is the mustaches, not the machismo.
As Earp, his brothers Virgil (Sam Elliot) and Morgan (Bill Paxton), and Holliday come walking over the hill on their way to the Corral, they all sport period-appropriate mustaches. So, too, do their enemies, the red-sashed Cowboys, led by "Curly Bill" Brocius (Powers Boothe) and Holliday's rival,...

Although "Heaven's Gate" is now regarded in some circles as a misunderstood masterpiece, Michael Cimino's lavish box office flop had a lot to answer for at the time. Not only was it blamed for the death of the American New Wave, but it was also seen as the final nail in the coffin of the Western. Released in 1980, the subsequent decade was an especially fallow period for the genre, but at least we got "Three Amigos."
The drought lasted almost exactly 10 years until Kevin Costner's "Dances With Wolves" became a massive box office success and went on to win seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, reinvigorating the oldest and most resilient of U.S. genres once again. Two years after Costner's triumph, Clint Eastwood's harsh but lyrical "Unforgiven" was also a big hit with audiences and won the same big prizes at the Oscars. The Western was back.

It's a story we see all the time. A quiet and quaint lakeside town. A family from that town maintaining appearances in public but breaking down in private. A series of vicious crimes that even the town's seasoned detectives have a hard time wrapping their heads around. Ultimately, a darkness emerges from the picture-perfect facade and swallows it whole.
So it goes in Adam Randall's 2019 film "I See You." It is something of a mystery movie, a thriller that draws anxiety and suspense from the question of what is lurking beneath the surface of what you're seeing. Even though the small town with hidden crimes setup is familiar, the story goes in wild directions that keep the viewer from ever feeling truly grounded.
What makes the movie different from that setup is the vast array of plot reversals; the way moments take on new meaning when viewed from a...

"I See You" defies expectations. What begins as a typical crime thriller mutates into something more intricate and profound. Devon Graye penned the script, blending together social commentary on child abuse, infidelity, police corruption, and homelessness. At the heart of the film is the concept of phrogging -- when a person or persons secretly squat inside someone else's home. Director Adam Randall elevates the film with long static shots, emotional character close-ups, and methodical dolly glides. The camera work here takes on a life all its own. But let's not forget the film's chill-inducing score, courtesy of composer William Arcane, which punctuates the film's vital and mouth-dropping moments.
Initially, "I See You" arrived in theaters in late 2019 and grossed just over $1 million at the box office. But when the film hit Netflix, it went viral -- scoring top slots in the streamer's daily Top 10 list. As we revisit this harrowing movie,...

As Epix morphs into MGM+ today, its leader is preparing to deliver an expanded slate of originals under Amazon’s ownership.
The top-to-bottom rebrand of the service that debuted in October 2009 coincides with the Season 3 premiere of “Godfather of Harlem,” which has become one of MGM+’s signature shows. Beyond that, MGM+ Head Michael Wright tells Variety the plan is to increase the streamer’s volume to at least eight original series a year.
Last week during MGM+’s session at the Television Critics Assn. press tour, Wright revealed a development slate that includes an adaptation of the MGM film “Hoodlum” from Chris Brancato (who’s also behind “Godfather of Harlem”); a take on the novel “The Emperor of Ocean Park” from John Wells Prods.; post-apocalyptic thrillers “Earth Abides” and “Ark,” also both based on books of the same name; and the comedy “American Classic,” starring Kevin Kline and Jon Tenney.

Warning: This contains spoilers for the And Just Like That... finale. Is Carrie and Samantha's friendship on the road to recovery? It looks that way. On Feb. 3, during the finale of And Just Like That..., Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) goes on a second date with math teacher Peter (Jon Tenney). At the end of their date, the pair share what Carrie would describe as a "not awful" kiss. But who does she decide to text about this encounter? None other than the one and only Samantha Jones (played by Kim Cattrall in the original Sex and the City). "I kissed a man," Carrie texts Samantha as she sits in her apartment. "The first of many," Samantha replies. "How...

Epix has put four scripted projects into development including a pair of comedies with one starring A Fish Called Wanda star Kevin Kline.
Kline is to star in American Classic, which would mark the actor’s second TV project if it goes to series. He recently signed up to star alongside Cate Blanchett in Alfonso Cuarón’s Disclaimer for Apple.
In the half-hour American Classic, Kline plays Broadway star and notorious narcissist Richard Bean, who suffers a spectacular public meltdown and returns to his tiny hometown and the family-run theater where he first became aware of his own brilliance.
When he arrives, he is shocked to discover that his father, the former artistic director, has slipped into a puppet-filled dementia, and that the once-respected theater run by his brother, played by The Closer’s Jon Tenney, and his wife, who is now the town’s mayor, has become, by necessity,...

Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of “And Just Like That,” which premiered Feb. 3 on HBO Max.
Reader, if you’re seeing these words, we must congratulate ourselves — we’ve made it through the “And Just Like That” wars alive.
The “Sex and the City” revival, which premiered in December on HBO Max, has been the subject of passionate discussion (and division) through its 10-episode season, while also becoming the streamer’s most successful original series. The two things are certainly intertwined, said Casey Bloys, the chief content officer at HBO and HBO Max, who told Variety, “In terms of viewership, it’s been phenomenal.”
Bloys didn’t stop there, though. “Criticism of any show is fair game — when you put a show out in the world, people have a reaction, and that’s healthy, and that’s normal,” he said. “Having said that, in my experience,...

Well, loyal readers, it’s that time again. December 31st, and you know what that means… it’s Val Kilmer’s birthday!
We here at Trailers From Hell would like to commemorate the moment with a look back at perhaps Kilmer’s signature role, the hard-partying sharpshooter Doc Holliday in the classic modern Western Tombstone (1993).
The story of Doc, the Earp brothers and their battle with a vicious gang of outlaws known as the “Cowboys” for the soul of Tombstone, Arizona, including the historic gunfight at the O.K. Corral, has been depicted on screen many times, many ways. But never with the verve and vigor of this picture, a riveting actioner boasting a cast of All-Stars. They even got Robert Mitchum to narrate!

We couldn't help but wonder: Who is Carrie Bradshaw kissing in this new photo from the Sex and the City reboot? Sarah Jessica Parker's character was spotted locking lips with a mystery man on the set of And Just Like That… in New York on Oct. 20. The actress performed the scene with Jon Tenney, who fans may recognize from the TNT show The Closer. HBO Max has yet to reveal the actor as part of the cast, so his character's identity (and ties to Carrie) are unknown at this point. One thing is for sure: This guy is not Mr. Big, who's played by Chris Noth. Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year and immediately became the talk of the fest after it won Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Now, A24 is set to share this moving story with the world — well, in limited release at least. The family drama opens in select theaters for an awards season qualifying run but will open wider on February 12, 2021.
Written and directed by Chung, Minari parallels his life as it tells the story of a Korean-American family that uproots from metropolitan Los Angeles to rural Arkansas to chase the American Dream. The problem is Anthony (Jamie Dornan) seems to have inherited a family curse, and remains oblivious to his beautiful admirer. Stung by his father Tony Reilly's (Christopher Walken) plans to sell their family farm to his American nephew (Jon Hamm), Anthony is suddenly jolted into pursing his dreams in this comedic, moving and wildly romantic tale. The fact that it’s a very complicated matter even identifying the “I” and “you” in “I See You” is just a sample of the narrative tricks in this very tricksy thriller. Working from an impressive first produced screenplay by actor Devon Graye, Adam Randall’s film is an eerie suspense exercise that starts out looking like a supernatural tale — one of several viewer presumptions this cleverly engineered narrative eventually pulls the rug out from under. Saban Films opens it on 10 U.S. screens this Friday, while Paramount is handling concurrent home-formats release. Long-term viability as a streaming offering is assured, while the distinctive plotting may well lure offshore remake bids.
Philipp Blaubach’s probing, restless camera charges the very air with unseen menace from the start, as a 10-year-old boy bicycles home through a picturesque small-town, his progress down a forest trail violently curtailed by some invisible barrier or force.

It seems like it’s been a while since I’ve seen Helen Hunt in a movie. Well, we’ve got a trailer to share for a new film project of hers called I See You. The movie is said to be a “mind-twisting psychological thriller” and it looks like it tells an interesting and messed up story with lots of twists and turns that the audience won’t see coming.
Here’s the synopsis that was shared for the movie:
When a 12 year-old boy goes missing, lead investigator Greg Harper (Jon Tenney) struggles to balance the pressure of the investigation and troubles with his wife, Jackie (Hunt). Facing a recent affair, great strain is put on the family and slowly gnaws away at Jackie's grip on reality. "If you did something, you can tell me." Saban Films has released the first official trailer for an indie horror film titled I See You, from director Adam Randall (of iBoy previously). This first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, then went on to play at Cleveland, Edinburgh, and Lisbon Horror Festival. Strange occurrences plague a small town detective and his family as he investigates the disappearance of a young boy. Starring Helen Hunt, Jon Tenney, Judah Lewis, Owen Teague, Libe Barer, Greg Alan Williams, Erika Alexander, and Allison King. I'm intrigued by this because it's not just a horror, but a "puzzle", where "nothing is exactly what it seems" as the trailer says. And that wooden mask is super creepy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Adam Randall's I See You, direct from Saban's YouTube: When a 12-year-old boy goes missing, lead investigator Greg Harper...

Greg Harper (Tenney), lead investigator, struggles to balance the pressures of the case while finding a way to forgive his well-heeled wife, Jackie (Hunt), for a recent infidelity. When a malicious presence manifests itself and puts their young son in mortal danger, the truth about evil in the Harper household is finally uncovered.
