Since the medium’s infancy, viewers have enjoyed sharing holidays with their favourite television characters. We grow invested in our friends on screen over the years; spending Christmas with them is a rite of passage, a chance for us to share tradition from our world with the fictional ones we see on screen. Some shows embrace the season wholeheartedly, characters in good spirits and enjoying the trappings of the season; others skew a little darker, bringing the more oppressive, burdensome side of the holidays to life. Either way, Christmas episodes tend to demonstrate the strengths of our favourite series,...

Sort (No Mans Land) is a very powerful short that comes from director David Adler. The CG animated film is set during World War I in 1916, and the story centers on two Danish soldiers in the German army. One of the soldiers has a burnt, deformed face, and the two are stranded in a bomb shelter on the Western Front. They are struggling to survive the constant bombardment of the enemy attacking from the outside. The two characters also have their own struggles within the shelter to overcome as well.
The moment I started watching this film I was hooked. It reels the viewer right in with an chilling action sequence of a battle taking place in the dead of night. It's really a thrilling sequence of red flashes and shadowy silhouettes, and the movie only gets better from there.
The animation style and character design is unique, and the narrative is completely captivating.

“When I need to take the Pill/ I look upon the windowsill…”
Mindy Lahiri and her cohorts dove headfirst last night into what is (somehow?) one of the big political debates of 2014: Birth control access! Dr. Lahiri was counseling an 18-year-old who wanted a prescription for the Pill without telling her overprotective detective father (Tim Daly), who proceeded to find out anyway, and then storm into Mindy’s office to demand answers. “You just watch yourself, you sex-crazed quack. I could get you on the no-fly list like that,” Detective Lang threatened.

Financial writer (Snap Judgement), documentary film producer (The Burger and the King) and Athens Biennial artist David Adler just returned from Greece, and files a report on the Frieze blog. He opens, “‘Athens is the new Berlin.’ This hopeful phrase, constantly repeated by visitors to the 3rd Athens Biennale, and by the artists who have moved to Athens to take advantage of the cheap rents and cultural climate, may or may not be true. There are many contenders for the title – Buenos Aires, even Warsaw – but what is indisputable is that Athens is the leader in EU econ-disaster tourism.”
Later in the piece, which surveys the wreckage — financial but also personal — caused by Greece’s sovereign debt crisis and EU skirmishing, he finds that film and dance are the art forms benefiting most from the country’s malaise:
Greece, though cut off economically, politically and even geographically, is not isolated culturally.

Leading up to the Oscars on Feb. 22, we will be highlighting the nominated films that have appeared in the magazine or on the Website in the last year. Damon Smith interviewed Man on Wire director James Marsh for our Summer '08 issue. Man on Wire is nominated for Best Documentary. James Marsh has wrestled before with subjects — both fictional and real life — whose obsessions have fueled eccentric and, at times, even extreme behavior. In The Burger and the King (1996), based on David Adler‘s book, he chronicled Elvis Presley‘s lifelong habit of compulsive eating. Wisconsin Death Trip (2000), based on the nonfiction book by Michael Lesy, traced the origins of a bizarre strain of murders, suicides and odd happenstances in a small...
