“Betrayed” doesn’t depict anything that hasn’t been seen many times before, but that’s less a knock on its lack of originality than a sad reflection of the fact that millions suffered similar hardships, tragedies and horrors during the Holocaust. Based on a true story, Eirik Svensson’s WWII saga focuses on the Braude family, who along with hundreds of fellow Norwegian Jews were rounded up and sent to work camps or, via the SS Donau cargo ship on Nov. 26, 1942, to Auschwitz, from which they never returned. , and no less valuable — or powerful — for being regrettably familiar.
Svensson opens “Betrayed” with Nazi collaborator Knut Rød (Anders Danielsen Lie) tranquilly dispensing orders to his men to detain the remaining Jews left in Oslo. It’s a small, quiet vision of the bureaucratic work upon which fascist genocide is built, and it casts a mournful pall over the ensuing action,...

In 2013, Daniel Rye, a Danish photographer in his mid-twenties, went to Syria to document the plight of civilian refugees and was kidnapped by Isis. Ransomed and held captive for 13 months, Rye was psychologically and physically tortured, starved and beaten by his captors, first on his own and then alongside several other international hostages, among them U.S. journalist James Foley.
This is the inherently dramatic true story told in Puk Damsgaard Andersen’s book “The Isis Hostage,” but it takes intelligence and paradoxical restraint from directors Niels Arden Oplev (Sweden’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) and Anders W. Berthelsen, as well as a superb, exceptionally physical lead performance from Esben Smed, to adapt it into “Daniel,” . Partly, the balance between gritty, true-life fidelity and pacy, exciting storytelling is achieved because in Rye, to whom Eric Kress’ warm, compassionate camera clings so doggedly, we have such a sympathetic, human protagonist.

When Only God Forgives premieres next month at Cannes, listen carefully. Some films are employing very strange instruments to get the sounds they want
Cristal Baschet
Only God Forgives (2013)
What is it? It looks a bit like a large glockenspiel with sculpted metal tear drops attached.
Who built it? French instrument-makers and artists Bernard and François Baschet, in 1952.
How does it sound? It creates "a unique sense of melancholy and foreboding", says Cliff Martinez, the ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer who worked with Nicolas Winding Refn on the soundtracks for Drive (2011) and Only God Forgives – which also stars Ryan Gosling, and premieres at Cannes the week after next. Both scores rely on the Cristal Baschet, which Martinez first saw at MoMA in New York when he was 10.

Los Angeles -- The Norwegian directing team of Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg, whose biopic of World War II resistance fighter Max Manus was a huge hit on home turf, have turned to another native hero for "Kon-Tiki." One of the most-vaunted escapades of the 20th century, Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 Peru-to-Polynesia expedition by raft gets glossy big-screen treatment in this efficiently told action-adventure. Delivering visual drama and understated character study, sometimes in disappointingly formulaic fashion, the feature has its incisive moments but falls short as both epic and intimate portrait.
With effective immediacy, the directors dramatize some incidents from Heyerdahl's 1950 Oscar-winning documentary about the trip, and cinematographer Geir Hartly Andreassen pays tribute in re-created B&W footage of the building of the raft. Too much of the action, though, devolves into close encounters with sharks, scenes that leave the on-deck characters adrift rather than helping to define them.

The Film:
Let The Right One In is a fantastic and extremely strange film to say the least and after watching it for the second time on Blu-ray, my thoughts about it are even stranger: If I identify it as a “cruel” film, that leaves me vulnerable to being accused of giving the film an uncharitably “cruel” reading. On the other hand, if I say that the film is one of my favorites, I might have to explain why I like it in order to escape being called a misanthrope. I’m even tempted to say, moreover, that one either likes this film, or one detests it—but if I said this I would be wrong: according to IMDb’s user ratings—which I regard as fairly accurate in gauging how well “liked” a movie is among a general audience—the film has scored an 8.0 out of 10.0 among the site...

On Avatar, the situation is the complete opposite. A luxury in film scoring today, the total time given to the scoring process on this film will probably exceed one year! Horner is currently working exclusively on this film,...
