Throughout the early 2000s, the rock ‘n’ roll film festival “Don’t Knock the Rock” was one of the highlights of any L.A.-based cinephile’s year, an impeccably assembled program of movies, live performances, and panels celebrating the intersection between rock ‘n’ roll and cinema. Created by writer-director Allison Anders and music supervisor Tiffany Anders, “Don’t Knock the Rock” was beloved for its determination to showcase difficult-to-see music documentaries and for the breadth and depth of its programming.
The festival last graced L.A. screens in 2016, but now it’s returning to Hollywood via the American Cinematheque with a line-up that’s one of the best ever. From May 23-27, “Don’t Knock the Rock” will screen an eclectic mix of documentaries, music-themed narrative films, and essential retrospective programs at the Cinematheque’s Los Feliz venue, with an added virtual component that will stream from May 23-July 31. She’s back, back, back again! Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose will once again return to host the 77th Annual Tony Awards live from the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center on Sunday, June 16. This marks her third consecutive year emceeing Broadway’s biggest night.
In addition to working the crowd, DeBose will also serve as a producer and choreograph the show’s opening number. The actress has always opened the show with a bang. But this will mark the first time she has crafted a dance number herself for the telecast. DeBose was nominated for an Emmy for hosting the 75th Annual Tony Awards ceremony, in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category. She could compete in that race again, but it looks like the 2024 telecast may also find the triple-threat performer eligible for the Emmy’s choreography category.

Spinning audiences back to the mid-1970s, UFA Fiction’s latest period series “Disko 76” is set in a pivotal time in the industrial heartland of West Germany as a new American pop music craze takes over the airwaves and dance floors.

Tierra Whack has released her new album, World Wide Whack, via Interscope Records. Stream one of our most anticipated albums of 2024 below.
Billed as her debut album, World Wide Whack follows Whack’s acclaimed 2018 project Whack World. Much like her first debut, this debut’s artsy, playful take on hip-hop comes accompanied by original images and videos. The combination of sonics and visuals fleshes out the fictional character Whack inhabits for the duration of the album, a character who’s described as “an alter ego both untouchable and vulnerable, superhuman, and painfully human.”
Whack went deeper into the project’s vulnerability in an Instagram post that she posted alongside the single “27 Club.” “I was in a dark place for a long time, and no one knew. I found my way out and made a choice to keep living,” she wrote. “I wanna be completely transparent with my ‘whackos’ because I...

Donna Summer’s family is feeling the opposite of love for Kanye West. In a new lawsuit filed Tuesday, Summer’s husband Bruce Sudano alleges West and collaborator Ty Dolla $ign engaged in “blatant theft” when they sampled Summer’s iconic 1977 hit “I Feel Love” on their recently released Vultures 1 song “Good (Don’t Die).”
The copyright infringement complaint says West and Ty Dolla $ign, whose legal name is Tyrone Griffin, “shamelessly” stole the instantly recognizable hook from Summer’s disco classic after they asked for permission to use it and were “explicitly denied.

Donna Summer’s estate is suing Kanye West for the unauthorized use of her song “I Feel Love” on his latest album, Vultures Pt. 1.
A version of Summer’s disco classic, “I Feel Love,” is interpolated on the Vultures track “Good (Don’T Die).” Summer’s estate says when West’s team initially approached them in late January to clear the sample, they declined, citing West’s negative reputation and recent antisemitic behavior.
West went ahead and released the song anyway, and while Summer’s estate has managed to pull the song from some streaming services, they are now going to court to seek an injunction for further distribution as well as compensatory damages for the millions of streams the song has already received.
Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have also threatened legal action against West over his unauthorized use of a performance of Ozzy singing “Iron Man” on Vultures Pt.

Legal threats magnet Kanye West is off the hook with at least one lawsuit that claimed he stole copyrighted material. The Vultures 1 rapper – accused last week of sampling Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” and Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” without permission from Ozzy Osbourne or Summer’s estate – is no longer facing claims he uploaded the video of his infamous Thanksgiving 2021 “Kimye” rant to Instagram without the consent of the volunteer who filmed it.

Donna Summer’s estate has accused Kanye West of copyright infringement over one of the songs from his recently released collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, Vultures 1. The estate claims the rapper asked to use one of the late singer’s songs, and despite not getting clearance for it, he used it anyway.
“Kanye West… asked permission to use Donna Summer’s song ‘I Feel Love,’ he was denied… He changed the words, had someone re-sing it or used AI but it’s ‘I Feel Love’… copyright infringement!” an Instagram...

Turns out Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t the only artist who refused to clear a sample for Kanye West’s new album. The rapper also apparently requested and was denied permission to feature Donna Summer’s disco classic “I Feel Love” on his newly released collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, Vultures Pt. 1. But, just as he did with Ozzy, West apparently disregard the wishes of Summer’s estate and went ahead and featured the song without their permission.
A version of “I Feel Love” is interpolated on the Vultures track “Good (Don’T Die).” Summer’s estate isn’t sure if West had someone re-sing the song or utilized AI technology, but they are clear about one thing: it’s “copyright infringement.”

Kanye West is stirring things up and can’t keep Taylor Swift’s name out of his mouth. The rapper has referred to the “Bejeweled” singer in “Carnival,” which is from the Vultures 1 album he released with Ty Dolla $ign.
“Why she say she sucked my d*** / Then she say she ain’t sucked my d*** / She gon’ take it up the a** like a ventriloquist / I made six Taylor Swift since I had the Rollie on the wrist,” West raps in the track.

Filled with wonderful musical performances exploring the 30-year career of Luther Vandross, Dawn Porter’s sweeping biographical documentary Luther: Never Too Much interweaves archival materials and new interviews in a manner that is effective at telling the story but somehow feels a little too distant from its subject. In particular, the selection of archival materials of Vandross, who passed away in 2005 at age 54, and the film’s later chapters divulging personal struggles with health and weight along with speculation about his sexuality, keep the viewer at arm’s length. Perhaps this is somewhat by design, a case of the film’s subject not speaking out, as some speculate for fear of alienating his female fans and perhaps his record label.
A barrier-breaking artist in many respects, Vandross grew up in the projects of the Bronx before becoming a seminal recording artist working as a background vocalist, producer, and later a...

Ice Cube said he never expected to be onstage accepting a gilded gramophone with his fellow N.W.A members, but that’s what happened Saturday when he, Mc-Ren, DJ Yella and the mother and son of late rapper Eazy-e received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy at the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards.

One of the most exciting categories this year at the Grammys is Best Melodic Rap Performance, where there’s one glaring omission: Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World.” The big hit from “Barbie” was relegated to Best Rap Song, showing a lack of enthusiasm from voters (who likely voted for it in the songwriting category due to its high alphabetical placement on the ballot). But the song’s miss ended up making the category way more interesting with a couple of hits now duking it out for the win. With big names in the category such as Drake and Sza, let’s consider who will ultimately be crowned the winner come February 4.
Let’s start with the song that has the least chance of a win: Burna Boy and 21 Savage’s “Sittin’ on Top of the World.” While the track was a big hit for Burna, it...

The biggest Grammy Award of the night is Album of the Year, meant to honor complete pieces of work that defined the music scene and impacted the culture throughout the eligibility period. The award has gone to some of the most influential records of all time, including The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Adele’s “21.” While some years are more uncertain than others, this year the category seems to be a two-horse race, although a few other players might sneak their way through as well.
The frontrunners here are Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” and Sza’s “Sos.” Both records are massive commercial successes, finishing 2023 as the second and third biggest albums of the year, respectively. Both have also managed to be career peaks for these already uber-popular stars.

Tierra Whack has announced her new album, World Wide Whack, out March 15th via Interscope Records. She will also share a new single called “Shower Song” this Friday, January 26th.
Described in a press release as the Philly rapper and singer’s “most artistic project to date,” World Wide Whack is being billed as her debut album. It was created with conceptual artist Alex Da Corte, who previously directed the animated video for her 2020 song “Dora.”
Much like her 2018 full-length, Whack World, the album will also roll out as a visual art project featuring images and video. During that process, it will reveal Whack’s fictional World Wide Whack character: “an alter ego both untouchable and vulnerable, superhuman, and painfully human.”
Da Corte designed the cover artwork, which references Pierrot, the original sad clown of 17th-century Italian theater; radical 1930s fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli; and Donna Summer. Check it out below.

From The Full Monty to In the Bedroom, Michael Clayton to Eternal Sunshine, the actor – who has died aged 75 – was an intelligent and unshowy delight
For British movie audiences of a certain generation, there is one image of Tom Wilkinson that will always sum up his hold on our hearts: a paunchy, respectable bloke in a dole queue, wearing an anorak over his collar and tie, with a bunch of other depressed but much younger and scruffier males, shyly, almost unconsciously, practising some swaying erotic dance moves to the accompaniment of Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff.
He played the upright, uptight Gerald in the 1997 British comedy The Full Monty, an ex-supervisor at a Sheffield steel mill who got laid off like the blue-collar workers under him but, unlike them, he initially tries concealing his humiliating unemployment from his wife. Every Sex and the City fan will instantly recognize two high-wattage looks up for sale in the latest event presented by Julien’s Auctions — one piece worn onscreen by series star and executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker — as they’ve transcended the function of costumes or fashion to become part of the show’s enduring iconography.
“Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion” is indeed an apt title for an upcoming auction that includes the three-tiered belted tutu skirt worn by Parker in Satc‘s opening credits (and again in the 2008 movie). Did disco ever go out of style? Not if you ask Mark Ronson and Dua Lipa, the forces behind the soundtrack for this year’s No. 1 box office hit, Barbie. Specifically, they co-penned the album’s lead single “Dance the Night,” which is performed by the English-Albanian singer.
In an era where No. 1 movies don’t always have top-ranking soundtracks, the hip swaying, hummable, string-fueled ditty took on a life of its own, becoming an anthem for summer and notching Grammy noms for Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Stateside, “Dance the Night” peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lipa’s fifth top-ten single.
However, as easy and free-breezy as “Dance the Night” might sound, Ronson, who won an Oscar for the original song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, says the single was “the longest I’ve ever worked on any song.

Barbra Streisand’s memoir “My Name is Barbra” was released on Tuesday, and one of the anecdotes in the long-in-the-works autobiography is one about how Judy Garland warned her not to let Hollywood give her the same treatment.
In 1963, Garland had her own TV show on CBS and dueted with the then-rising star Streisand on one episode.
“Judy and I became friends. … And I remember her saying something I never quite understood: ‘Don’t let them do to you what they did to me.’ I should have asked her what she meant, but I didn’t want to appear too nosy,” Streisand wrote in an excerpt shared with People.
“Six years after we did [her show], she was dead at the age of 47,” Streisand lamented. “What a tragedy… and such a loss. She was an extraordinary talent.”
