Powerhouse Indicator’s first foray into the Universal library yields six noir thrillers, all crime-related and all different: the list introduces us to scheming businessmen, venal confidence crooks, black-market racketeers, a femme fatale, a gangster deportee and baby stealers. The B&w features are enriched with some of the best actors of the postwar years, and the titles themselves are a litany of vice and sin: The Web, Larceny, Kiss the Blood Off My Hands, Abandoned, Deported and Naked Alibi.

One of the best pictures of 2015 is an accurate and relevant movie about a truly difficult subject. David Beckham made his much-anticipated appearance in Only Fools and Horses on Friday night (March 21).
The former footballer starred opposite Sir David Jason (Del Boy) and Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney) in the one-off skit for Sport Relief.
The Only Fools short saw Del Boy and Rodney trying to flog 'Golden Balls' boxers, which Rodney begrudgingly modelled.
Sitting in the cafe, Del Boy was moaning about 'that git' who signed the pants, only for Beckham himself to correct him: "They're boxer briefs."
Beckham, as well as delivering the classic line "Shut up you tart" to Rodney, also told Del Boy's younger brother exactly how to model the boxers.
Swapping their favourite artist picks, Rodney went for Matisse while Beckham chose Tony Hart: "That Morph cracks me up."

Only Fools and Horses will not return for a full series, according to writer Jim Sullivan.
The much-loved comedy will return for a one-off sketch for Sport Relief on BBC One tonight (March 21), with David Beckham starring opposite Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.
However, Jim Sullivan - the son of late creator John Sullivan - has confirmed that there are no plans for it to return for further episodes.
"It's a relief now that it's done as we were all sworn to secrecy for what felt like a long time," he told Radio Times.
"It's also good to be able to set the record straight about some of the rumours - that the sketch is based on a 'missing script' about Del's 65th birthday, that it's a trailer for a new episode, that we're writing a new series etc. None of it is true."

I never thought much about it before, but it dawned on me while watching Monsters University that Pixar essentially makes bedtime stories for both sides of the page, the reader and the read to.
This formula, blending the concerns of parents and their kids into familiar, high-energy family entertainments, has been the stock and trade of the studio for almost twenty years now. It’s not surprising then, that in a period of creative drought the gang are returning to the world of Monsters Inc., a universe that takes the idea of that ultimate bedtime story villain, the bogeyman, and turns him on his head. The only question is whether the same audience enchanted by the adventures of Sully, Mike and Boo will go out for a prequel that sends the two monsters to college and jettisons the little tyke altogether.

Most of us look back on our college years with great fondness, except for the occasional night of overindulgence. This week, Disney releases Monsters University, the prequel to the 2001 animated hit Monsters, Inc., that glances back at the academic origins of James Sullivan and Mike Wazowski as well as the roots of their friendship. Though computer animation has become the prevailing medium for both Disney and Pixar, given the themes of Monsters University, we thought it was high time to reexamine some landmarks from the studio's past. Specifically we thought we’d take a look at some of our favorite live-action films in the Disney catalog and see if they carried any lingering relevance to contemporary cinema. You know, just another fun afternoon with the...

"Monsters, Inc." may be the most original and underrated film ever to come out of Pixar, an inventive spin on the professional bogeymen hiding in kids' closets and the reasons they're there in the first place. It's their job, and a fully realized alternate universe is utterly dependent on their work.
"Monsters University" is a prequel that is far more conventional, not nearly as witty or clever as that original. The 3-D animation takes the art form to a new level, a few sentimental moments connect and the climax is a hum-dinger. But with the bar set so high by the first film, this "Mike & Sully: The Fraternity Years" can't help but feel like a letdown.
"University" takes us back to Mike Wazowski's childhood, when the smallest, shrimpiest-voiced monster on the bus resolved, after one school field trip to Monsters, Inc., to become a "scarer." It doesn't matter many people tell him,...

Candy and punch-based drunkenness aside, the best part of Halloween has to be the celebrity costume. First of all, it tricks the lost souls that roam the earth on All Hollow’s Eve into thinking you’re Ryan Gosling from Drive. Second of all, it helps pay homage to celebrities, a group of people who entertain us all year long with their movies, their nip slips and their mug shots. So why should other celebrities have to miss out on that joy, forever forced to be a sexy witch or a sexy cat or a sexy key grip? As long as they don’t happen to be going to the same shindig, we think it’s more than okay for famous people to go as other famous people. If Deryck Whibley can go as ex-wife Avril Lavgine, we say everything is game.

A collection of new character art for Pixar's upcoming prequel Monsters University has been released showing Mike, Sulley and a few other characters in their college days. The story gives us the origin of how Mike Wazowski and James Sullivan met in scare college and how they eventually ended up becoming friends.
We haven't seen much from this movie since the teaser trailer was released back in June. The movie stars the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray and Peter Sohn. It hits theaters on June 21st, 2013.
I loved the first movie, and this one looks like it's going to be at least equally as entertaining.
Here's the Synopsis:
Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University...

At Disney's D23 expo, director Dan Scanlon and animator Ricky Nierva revealed shots from the upcoming "Monsters, Inc" prequel, called "Monsters University," which will focus on Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James Sullivan (John Goodman) during their college days. Scanlon said that fans will get to see more of the monsters' world seen in the first film. "They're going to be outside and they're going to be on campus," he explained. "[They're] going to meet monsters like they've never seen before." It's likely that the monsters will range from professors to geeks to athletes. Scanlon confirmed that Randall Boggs, voiced by Steve Buscemi in the original film, will return as well. There will also be lots of references to college movies from the 80s. "Monsters University" is set to hit theaters on June 13th, 2013, and Pixar is currently focusing on designing younger versions of Mike and Sulley. Check out some shots...

Honestly, no one does it better than Pixar. However, over the last few years I’ve found myself slipping out of love with the studio. I just chalked it up to me getting older and out of touch. The fact is I think the films the studio has been focusing on have been mediocre at best. Going into the Walt Disney Studios Panel at D23, Pixar had a lot of ground to cover. Let’s start out with the easy stuff. Up until Friday the D23 Expo had been sort of a bust in the terms of any real newsworthy stories or announcements. So I was afraid Saturday would bring about more info on projects already announced. That was not the case once the Pixar segment of the presentation concluded. Rockstar COO John Lasseter was on hand to whip the crowd into frenzy the only way he knows how. He...

While at a 20th anniversary screening of his 1991 comedy western, City Slickers, Billy Crystal talked about the upcoming follow-up, Monsters, Inc. 2, which is in fact a prequel.
The movie, which is more officially titled Monsters University, follows future best buddies Mike Wazowski (Crystal) and James Sullivan (John Goodman) when they were back in college working their way towards jobs at Monsters, Incorporated. At the time, the two aren't friends but more like rivals before eventually forming the relationship we saw in the original.
Crystal's voice was going during the event, due to a 5 1/2–hour fourth recording session earlier in the day. Of the movie, he shared "I have to tell you something, it is hilarious. The Pixar people are geniuses. It’s 10 years since the first movie. Yeah, it’s crazy. And it’s a prequel. They’re in college. It’s how they met, it’s how Michael and Sully meet,...

Boston journalist James Sullivan has a gift for aiming the microscope at specific events and drawing out their implications, as proved by his superb 2008 book The Hardest Working Man, about James Brown’s Boston Garden concert of April 5, 1968, the night after Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. (Local TV televised Brown’s show, which is credited with helping cool racial tensions in the city; Boston remained relatively unharmed in the aftermath of King’s murder.) It’s a (hard-working) man’s world
Back when celebrities were courageous enough to talk race into a microphone and the general public cared to hear, James Brown was King. The Godfather of Soul may have very well secured this particular crown on April 5, 1968—less than a day after civil-rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was slain on a Memphis hotel balcony. That night, on the Boston Garden stage, Brown charged into “Get It Together,” and calmed the anxious crowd in attendance, the riot police and the local TV audience.

Two years after James Brown's death, the unexpected upswing in books about him has hit. This summer saw the enlightening anthology The James Brown Reader, September brought Don Rhodes' personal-reminisces collection Say It Loud!, and more biographies are forthcoming. So The Hardest Working Man: How James Brown Saved The Soul Of America, a retelling of one of the most legendary concerts of the 1960s, was probably inevitable. What wasn't was a write-up this good: Boston Globe contributor James Sullivan has produced one of the most vivid music books in recent memory. The Hardest Working Man has loads of detail about its subject, a Brown concert at Boston Garden the night after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s murder; the show was broadcast several times on local television, helping ease tensions in the area. (That show was also explored in a documentary that Shout Factory included on the recent three-dvd set.
