Leading Chinese film director Chen Kaige is poised to shoot historical epic “Swan Song” as his next feature movie. It will focus on 18th century classical music composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky through critical failure, persecution for his sexuality and a mysterious death during the strife of the soon-to-collapse Russian Empire.
Moonstone Entertainment will launch pre-sales on the film at Cannes later this month. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2024 and early 2025 in the Baltics.
“Swan Song” was written by Shahar Stroh, who will also produce alongside Moonstone principal Etchie Stroh. Corporate credits go Moonstone Entertainment and Strohberry Films.
“The story of ‘Swan Song’ goes beyond the music of one man. It is about the perpetual struggle of beauty and love against darkness and hate, and I am excited to be bringing it to a global audience,” said Chen in prepared comments. “Creating a visually stunning and compelling story, paired with Tchaikovsky’s timeless music,...

1091 Pictures has acquired worldwide digital rights to A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem, a feature documentary directed and produced by Yu Gu, written and produced by Elizabeth Ai and co-produced by Jin Yoo-Kim. The film, which had its world premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, will be available to buy on platforms January 26, 2021, and rent February 2.
The doc follows Lacy, an Oakland Raiders cheerleader who sued the team in 2014 for wage theft, and Maria, a former cheerleader for the Buffalo Bills who filed a similar suit with three others, as they fight for fair compensation from the NFL amid a structure in which some cheerleaders are compensated at less than minimum wage, compared with the teams’ players, mascots and concession workers. In the process, they reveal a culture of toxic masculinity and the devaluation of women’s labor in society. The Raiders eventually settled their suit and increased their cheerleaders’ pay.

Based on the best-selling novel by Gary Brandner, The Howling made effective use of the classic werewolf tale but more importantly the film deserves respect simply for being the innovative modern werewolf flick, that is the first to actually show the lycanthrope transformation process in slow, painstaking detail through a combination of clever edits and animatronics. The Howling may not be as polished or effective as John Landis’ 1981 An American Werewolf in London, but the film delivers more action, gore and true scares letting the wolves bite in and howl more often than not. Werewolves are the least-regarded of all the classic monsters. Unlike vampire films and Mummy films werewolves have never had much luck at the box office. 1981 changed all that with not one but two movies baring these hairy beasts. The combination of American Werewolf In London and The Howling (both released in 1981) further backs up the theory...

Back in September I was fortunate enough to interview the legendary Joe Dante and we discussed the recent remake of Piranha and he told me there was also a remake of his classic The Howling being shot, pretty much as we spoke.
Now film distributor Anchor Bay have announced they’ve acquired the rights to release the film in all English-speaking countries. The Howling: Reborn is currently in post-production.

The Howling franchise has been around for what seems like forever. Yes, the sequels have been known to fly completely off of the rails sometimes, but hey, they're as tenacious as The Children of the Corn flicks! We're hoping this latest flick gets things back on track. We'll find out soon enough too as The Howling: Reborn has just scored itself some distro!

Somewhere along the way we've lost track of how many movies there are in The Howling franchise. Six maybe? Yes. Six. Variety has reported that Joe Dante’s 1981 werewolf classic The Howling is getting a Hollywood makeover.
Producers Joel Kastelberg (Highball) and Etchie Stroh (The Promise) want to reboot the franchise as The Howling: Reborn. Taking on both writing and directing duties will be former studio marketing executive Joe Nimziki, who will be making his feature length film debut with this project.
The original film spawned six terrible sequels released from 1985 to 1995, which were never meant to be anything more than a long, drawn-out attempt to cash in on the original cult classic. Some may argue that this is exactly why the series should be rebooted, but in my opinion remakes hardly ever surpass the original, and in an era of Hollywood where most films seem to be remakes/reboots/re-imaginings or sequels/prequels, I would prefer for Kastelberg, Stroh, and Nimziki to make an original werewolf movie completely independent...

I love werewolves. I think I’ve said that multiple times before. Do I love them enough to watch The Twilight Saga: New Moon? No, because those aren’t exactly werewolves-though they were the only redeemable aspect of that god awful series of books. Now, do I love werewolves enough to watch the planned re-boot of Joe Dante’s 1981 film The Howling? You bet your gut slicing claws I do. This is not to say I don’t have my reservations about any horror film re-boot based on a property from the 1980’s, which I most definitely have a love hate relationship with. But, with all the re-boots, re-makes, re-launches and re-do’s coming at us from that time we call The 80’s, they might as well give werewolves their due side by side with supernatural serial killers and demons.

It appears as if our prayers have been answered friends, and werewolves will be following vampires in the great 'classic monsters rebirth' cycle of this century. Universal is hitting hard with The Wolf Man early next year, and there are remakes of An American Werewolf in London and An American Werewolf in Paris are being whispered about in the halls of Hollywood. The only potential downside to all of this is if the Twilight effect kicks in, and future werewolf movies are stripped of their grit and given a glossy, teen-targeted look. Insert the potentially problematic premise of The Howling: Reborn, announced today via Variety. Indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are setting up a remake of the 1981 Joe Dante film, which followed a news anchor being stalked by a killer who turns out to be a werewolf. This new film will follow more of a Gossip Girl meets Twilight, with...

Now that New Moon is raking in the cash, and doing what very little it can for the werewolves of the world, the vamps are gearing up for some further sharp-toothed competition. Variety reports that The Howling will return to the big screen by the hands of indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh under the name The Howling: Reborn. Since it's been over three years since we first heard rumors of a remake, my guess is that this is a whole new can of worms.
A former marketing executive for studios like MGM and New Line, Joe Nimziki wrote the script and will direct it when the feature starts shooting this February. Once that's all done, they're hoping to get this howler into theaters for Halloween. The plot is being kept under wraps, but the original followed a TV newswoman who goes on a...

Joe Dante’s The Howling is a fun and really flawed film. It has a boatload of fans, but I think they’d be hard pressed to say it’s not really weak in some areas, limited by budget and ultimately overshadowed by its big brother, An American Werewolf in London.
This sort of film — the one that has a lot of potential that wasn’t fully realized — is the variety that I’m okay with Hollywood remaking. According to Variety, that’s exactly what producers Joel Kastelberg and Moonstone Entertainment’s Etchie Stroh are doing with The Howling: Reborn. The film is scheduled to begin shooting in February, with a release in Halloween of next year.
Details about the plot are being kept under wraps, so it’s currently unknown whether the remake will follow the reporter-being-stalked-by-serial-killer-werewolf track of the original film or one of its six sequels.

Here’s an idea for you. Let’s take a nearly forgotten, ’80s franchise, one where the first film is almost considered a modern classic. We’ll reboot it by slapping the subtitle Reborn at the end. Who should we get to direct this bad boy? I got it. A marketing exec. Let’s completely bypass even giving this to one of the commercial or music video directing guys. This things cries for a marketing exec.
That is precisely what Joel Kastelberg and Moonstone Entertainment’s Etchie Stroh are doing with The Howling series. According to Variety, The Howling: Reborn is set to begin shooting in February with a release date around Halloween tentative. The man behind the camera on this one is to be Joe Nimziki, who, aside from having a playfully goofy last name, was a studio marketing executive for New Line, MGM, and Sony. Needless to say,...

Reconfirming what we reported here from the Afm last month, Variety has officially announced that indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Moonstone Entertainment's Etchie Stroh are re-launching the Howling werewolf franchise with The Howling: Reborn . Also as stated in our previous post , former studio marketing exec Joe Nimziki, who worked at New Line, MGM and Sony, will make his feature directorial debut from his own script. Shooting is expected to begin in February with an October, Halloween release for 2010. While plot details are being kept under wraps, we can assume that the story will follow Joe Dante's original 1981 flick, which launched the franchise and went on to spawn six sequels. Dee Wallace-Stone starred as a news anchor stalked by a serial killer who turns out to be...

The horror franchise The Howling, which was first introduced in 1981 and spawned six sequels, is now being relaunched in a new film entitled The Howling: Reborn.
The original film was directed by Joe Dante and starred Dee Wallace-Stone as a news anchor stalked by a serial killer who turns out to be a werewolf, but so far all plot details for the new film are being kept under wraps.
Producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are reinventing the franchise and, according to Variety, former studio marketing executive Joe Nimziki will make his feature directorial debut on the film, working from his own script.
Steve Lane and Bob Pringle, who served as executive producers on the original, will also executive produce The Howling: Reborn.

The 1981 werewolf movie The Howling is getting a second shot to find an audience. A remake is in the planning stages and tentatively scheduled to go in front of cameras next February. It could even be out in theaters by Halloween 2010.
Two movie producers known for their indie films are responsible for shepherding this new Howling. They are Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh and they've got a director by the name of Joe Nimziki who used to work as a marketing executive for studios. He's written a screenplay called The Howling: Reborn, which is very appropriate since the six Howling sequels that followed the original not only stunk up the franchise, I would dare say that an entirely new stinky odor was created.
The original Howling had three great things working for it: strong direction by Joe Dante (Gremlins, the upcoming thriller The Hole 3D), a tight, serious script...

I was trying to come up with an analogy for Hollywood.s annoying tendency to find something that makes money then beat it into the ground until it.s beyond predictable and over-processed. There.s nothing as annoying though. When The Dark Knight made billions, studios decided that all superhero movies should be gritty. When Twilight doubled its budget in a weekend, studios bought up every vampire franchise possible. And now that New Moon has done the same, it seems that wolves are next. According to Variety, producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are making plans to reboot the Howling series, an 80s horror franchise based on a novel about a newscaster who is stalked by a werewolf. The mildly popular original movie spawned six sequels, including one entitled The Howling II: Stirba . Werewolf Bitch. Seriously. The producing pair has signed on Joe Nimziki to direct and write. Of course,...

A new moon is rising on The Howling franchise.
Producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh, the latter of whom is associated with Moonstone Entertainment, are planning a re-launch of the werewolf movie franchise entitled The Howling: Reborn. According to Variety, the film is scheduled to begin shooting next February for a Halloween 2010 release.
The 1981 movie The Howling, which was directed by Joe Dante and scripted by John Sayles, is considered one of the better werewolf movies, along with An American Werewolf in London (also slated for a remake). No word if The Howling: Reborn will be a remake or have any ties to the original, which concerned a news anchor (played by Dee Wallace-Stone) whose stalker turns out to be a werewolf, and an isolated country resort full of other shape-shifting creatures.
Joe Nimziki, who previously worked as a marketing executive, will write and direct the new movie,...
