George A. Romero’s elite classic Dawn of the Dead turns 45 years old this year, while Zack Snyder’s remake approaches its own 20th anniversary. But the two different versions of Dawn of the Dead are far from the only two horror movies set inside shopping malls.
“Mall Horror” is basically its own subgenre, and below are two under-discussed gems in the shopping mall arena that are well worth your time as you celebrate the 45th anniversary of the greatest “Mall Horror” movie ever made – and the one that started it all…

By the late 80s, the slasher boom had all but dried up. That’s not to say there aren’t gems to be mined from the era, but the heyday had passed. Shot in the famous Sherman Oaks Galleria, Phantom of the Mall is a very fun, very...

The concert was to be the Saturday night entertainment at the NRA Convention held this weekend in Houston, just 300 miles east of Uvalde, Texas, where 19 students and two teachers were killed Tuesday by a gunman wielding an assault rifle.

After a string of performers pulled out of this weekend’s planned NRA “Grand Ol’ Night of Freedom” concert in Houston, the musical event apparently has been canceled.
The concert was to have taken place during the organization’s annual conference. “American Pie” singer Don McLean, Larry Gatlin, Larry Stewart, Lee Greenwood, T. Graham Brown and Danielle Peck all canceled in the past few days, and this morning the only remaining act, country singer Jacob Bryant, posted on Twitter, “The show has been cancelled since yesterday.”

While there doesn’t seem to have been any official announcement from the NRA, the page on its website once devoted to the event — billed as “A Saturday night concert like no other” — reads simply, “We’re sorry. We can’t find that page.”

“Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 1 will now include a warning card following the massacre that took place at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers were killed. Netflix’s acclaimed sci-fi show takes on a darker tone this season, with the first eight minutes of the premiere episode depicting graphic images of dead children.
The warning will read, “We filmed this season of Stranger Things a year ago. But given the recent tragic shooting at a school in Texas, viewers may find the opening scene of episode 1 distressing. We are deeply saddened by this unspeakable violence, and our hearts go out to every family mourning a loved one.”

A country music concert slated for this weekend’s NRA Convention in Houston just lost another performer. Larry Gatlin, a member of the country trio the Gatlin Brothers, has dropped out of the lineup. The 74-year-old vocalist and songwriter behind Gatlin Brothers hits like “All the Gold in California” and “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer to You)” says in a statement that he “cannot, in good conscience, perform at the NRA convention in Houston” following Tuesday’s massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

The thing I miss the most about the heyday of the ’80s slasher movie is that there were so many of them that eventually filmmakers had to start finding ways to shake up the formula and continually introduce weirder and weirder stuff. That's not to say that all of these movies were necessarily "good," but that they managed to be distinctive within a sub-genre known for its sameness. For as good as horror is today—and we are in a really good place for horror—there is no one corner of the genre that is so prevalent as the slasher once was that inspires various permutations. We don't get a Sleepaway Camp or a Blood Rage much anymore. The reasons for this are ultimately positive and encouraging—the current crop of horror films are so vastly different from one another that we avoid this phenomenon—but it still makes me...

This November, Arrow Video offers horror fans a wide variety of thrills and onscreen kills with their respective Blu-ray releases of C.H.U.D., The Initiation, and The Driller Killer, and the full release details for all three Blu-rays have now been revealed.
Press Release: Mvd Entertainment Group furthers the distribution of Arrow Video in the Us with three great new titles in November. The month kicks off with The Initiation on Blu-ray, one of the best of the college-based slasher movies of the 1980s. One of the later entries into the genre, it had horror fans hooked with its tense stalk 'n' slash scenes and it's surprising twist of an ending.
The horror continues with C.H.U.D., the classic 80s horror featuring the Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers making their long-awaited debut on Blu-ray with a brand new restoration from original film elements.

Like any blossoming all-American gal, Kelly is looking forward to her sorority initiation with a mixture of excitement and apprehension – and she s got every reason to be anxious considering the prank her sorority sisters have tasked her with a late-night break-in of her fathers department store. At first, it seems pretty straightforward and everything goes to plan, but once inside the mall, Kelly and her fellow pledges finds themselves locked in, and they re not alone…
Making its second appearance on DVD here in the UK (the first was an “only just better than VHS” release by Pegasus), The Initiation is one of my personal favourites from the Eighties slasher boom. Taking its lead from those slasher movies that came before it,...

After she had the heart attack out in Michigan on Thanksgiving 1988, I stood by her bedside in the recovery room and she tried so hard to tell me something, but it just didn't work. I loved her so much. Did she know how much? I never told her. There are always questions you wish you'd asked after it's too late to get an answer. Sometimes years can pass before you realize they're questions.
Everyone said I "took after her," and I did. My features are more rounded than anyone else on either side of my family. Martha R. Stumm was the youngest of six surviving children of a Dutch-Irish-German couple who raised their family on a farm outside Tayorville, Illinois. Years after after her father died and her mother opened a boarding house in Urbana, enough oil was found beneath the land to make it worth drilling.

Comic books are breaking all kinds of cultural barriers these days. Over the weekend DC Comics was honored at the 15th annual Prism Awards for their accurate portrayal of mental health/drug abuse in two titles.
The first of which, The Rise of Arsenal focuses on Roy Harper’s battle against drug addiction in the wake of losing his daughter. The second is a Vertigo title called Greek Street, which in the recent Ajax storyline dealt with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Look for the award-winning Greek Street storyline in Volume 3 which hits stores in September. You can read The Rise of Arsenal in the recently released hardcover graphic novel, Justice League: The Rise and Fall.
About the Prism Awards:

The Initiation (1984) D: Larry Stewart Daphne Zuniga, Vera Miles, Clu Gulager With the Halloween approaching, it's the time of year for ghosts and goblins and witches and scary guys chasing Jamie Lee Curtis across the street. With that in mind, it's also time to take a look at 31 of the greatest slasher films of the last 31 years, coming to you over the next 31 days. ("Greatest" being an admittedly relative term for the genre, of course.) What makes a slasher film? Well, we've all heard the general rules from Wes Craven's Scream. The ingredients are...

Anne Hathaway, William Shatner, Benjamin Bratt, Chandra Wilson and Dana Delany were honored Thursday for individual performances in film and TV categories of the 2009 Prism Awards.
Presented by the nonprofit Entertainment Industries Council, the Prisms honor productions that advance public awareness of substance abuse and mental-health issues. FX will air the ceremony Sept. 26 as part of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
"In these difficult economic times, when many of us know someone in our lives touched by these issues, the stories we honor with Prism Awards have shown great sensitivity toward those who are experiencing addiction, substance abuse and other mental-health problems," Eic chief Brian Dyak said.
Hathaway was honored in the feature performance category for Sony Pictures Classics' "Rachel Getting Married." The film also received a Prism.

I was born at the center of the universe, and have had good fortune for all of my days. The center was located at the corner of Washington and Maple streets in Urbana, Illinois, a two-bedroom white stucco house with green canvas awnings, evergreens and geraniums in front and a white picket fence enclosing the back yard. Hollyhocks clustered thickly by the fence. There was a barbeque grill back there made by my father with stone and mortar, a dime embedded in its smokestack to mark the year of its completion.
There was a mountain ash tree in the front yard, and three more down the parking on the side of the house. These remarkable trees had white bark that could be peeled loose, and their branches were weighed down by clusters of red-orange berries. "People are always driving up and asking me about those trees," my father said. He had planted them himself,...
