Director Brian De Palma followed Carrie with another gory vaunt into the supernatural. Here's why The Fury deserves a revisit...
When it comes to telekinesis and gory visual effects, the movie that generally springs to mind is David Cronenberg’s 1981 exploding head opus, Scanners. But years before that, American director Brian De Palma was liberally dowsing the screen with claret in his 1976 adaptation of Carrie - still rightly regarded as one of the best Stephen King adaptations made so far. A less widely remembered supernatural film from De Palma came two years after: De Palma’s supernatural thriller, The Fury.
The Fury was made with a more generous budget than Carrie, had a starrier cast (Kirk Douglas in the lead, John Cassavetes playing the villain), and it even did pretty well in financial terms. Yet The Fury had the misfortune of being caught in a kind of pincer movement between Carrie,...

Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

Reporters from CNN and Al Jazeera shared their stories about reporting from Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines on Friday, calling the experience “absolutely terrifying.” CNN’s Andrew Stevens and Al Jazeera’s Jamela Alindogan, both sent to the city ahead of the storm, were stuck in what is believed to be one of the worst typhoons in human history. Over 10,000 people are estimated to have been killed. Alindogan reported from one of the worst-hit areas, the coastal city of Tacloban, and told Democracy Now about her experience. About a minute into her live broadcast, she said, “the typhoon struck and it.

People who talk about movies online with others are six times more likely to purchase movie tickets than those who don't, according to a study released Tuesday. That people who talk about movies go to see movies makes sense -- it's the degree to which they do that should matter to marketers, Andy Stevens, executive vice president of research at ShareThis, which did the study, told TheWrap. "This tells us not only that sharing is a strong indicator of purchase intent but also that sharers are a highly valuable audience to target...

WWE Legend ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper has hit the roof after reports emerged yesterday that he had made indecent remarks to WWE Diva Kaitlyn backstage at Raw 1000.
Piper’s many followers on Twitter were treated to dozens of angry tweets from the Hot Rod when the website WZROnline.com printed an unfounded claim that was read by Piper’s daughter who was awaiting her father’s safe return after his involvement in the Heath Slater Vs Legends angle from Raw this past week.
Upon reading the article himself Piper took to Twitter, lashing out against those responsible. Below are a few choice excerpts from his rant:
(1) Everybody Out Of The Fu*Ken Pool Now! Just walked in the ranch.Been gone 4-wks..I come to hug my kids!.1st thing I hear is @KaitlynnWWE

Marcy Rubin
A veteran of international media sales and distribution, Marcy Rubin brings an extensive understanding of the ever-changing international marketplace to the table. Over the past 25 years, she has arranged financing via foreign pre-sales for over 100 independent films. After graduating from American University in Washington, D.C., she headed to Los Angeles and has worked at Merv Griffin Productions, Cinema Entertainment, and Kodiak Films. For the past 20 years, Rubin held the position of international sales executive at the prominent international production and distribution company, CineTel Films. During her tenure at CineTel, she developed a vast network of contacts with international distributors, television broadcasters, and financial institutions, and serving on the board of directors of Ifta, the trade organization of the independent film community (1996 and 1997). Now a sought-after member of that community, she speaks on various panels about the international marketplace. The next logical step for Rubin was to launch her own business, which she did in 2011: Blue Galaxy International, a full-service international distribution company with global representation. Fiorenza Cella Fiorenza Cella, founder of the video distribution company Free Dolphin Entertainment, began her career as a journalist with the Italian TV network Italia Uno (Mediaset). Her experience in London, where she worked with the BBC to develop youth programming, helped to spark her vision of a world connected via entertainment media. Cella catapulted her international savvy into the creation, in 1995, of Free Dolphin, headquartered in Paris. Within five years, she brought the company into the major leagues with the sale of television rights to both French and Italian networks, and Free Dolphin rose from a fledgling enterprise to a force in the industry. During 16 years at the company helm, Cella forged solid relationships with the heads of major channels in France, Italy and Spain. Today she is again building on her talent. As a partner in Blue Galaxy International, Cella has turned her attention toward global distribution and production, a natural path for the media pro.

Rochester, NY - Ever wonder why schools today stink compared to decades ago? Every think tank moron has their dubious reasonings that appeases their corporate masters. But the truth is extraordinarily simple: Schools dumped their education films.
Do you remember those days when the gym teacher had to pad out health class by wheeling in the 16mm projector from the Av department? They’d thread up classic tales about your body, narcotics, driving safety and manners. Things which kids nowadays can’t seem to handle.
When the Vcr arrived in schools, the 16mm projector was quickly dumped as teaching tool.
Where did these classic films go? Many arrived at the city dump. However a few lucky tens of thousands found themselves on the racks of the Av Geeks Archive. This repository of cinematic education is overseen by Skip Elsheimer. He started collecting the films after I moved out of the infamous PineHaus.

Actor Charles Bronson and Cape Fear director J. Lee Thompson collaborated on numerous films over the years, and while it seems unlikely that anyone would cite 1983's 10 to Midnight as the best work the duo ever did, it does have the distinction of becoming one of my personal favorites. (So there.) A bizarre mixture of police procedural and slasher flick, this seedy little movie typifies Cannon Films' output in the '80s -- low budget and exploitative, but still competently made and entertaining.
This time out Bronson plays grizzled Lieutenant Leo Kessler, who teams up with Detective Paul McAnn (Andrew Stevens) to hunt down a sexual psychopath who's been slashing local women. The cops know their perp is Warren Stacy (Gene Davis), but Stacy is smart enough to have an alibi and kill his victims while naked so as not to leave any evidence behind. In his all-consuming quest to get his man,...

Tacoma - Who could imagine making a documentary about dolphins could lead to so much trouble. When director Louie Psihoyos exposed what the Japanese locals were doing to dolphins in Taiji, Japan in The Cove, he found himself a wanted man. This sea-side community celebrates their relationship with the dolphin. But there’s a darkside when they herd dolphins into a cove, sell the prized ones to aquariums for $150,000 each. The remaining dolphins are slaughtered and given to school kids as whale meat. He found himself wanted by the Japanese law for various charges including videotaping undercover police officers.
Certain folks have defended this slaughter as cultural dining. How dare Americans protest what the Japanese eat. The falsely labeled dolphin meat has toxic levels of mercury. Remember that this is the same Japan that will shut off imports of American agriculture and livestock with the rumor of something being amiss.
