The new editorial director of the Fairchild Fashion Group will be folkloric former New York Observer editor Peter Kaplan. Although Kaplan stepped down from the blushing weekly in 2009, his notoriety has only swelled since his departure. This, in large part, is thanks to three Twitter feeds that chronicle the fictive exploits of cranky, wise, and “real” iterations of a Kaplan caricature created by former Observer staffers Peter Stevenson and Vanity Fair’s Jim Windolf. The real real Kaplan, meanwhile, has served as the editorial creative director of Condé Nast Traveler since last year. According to an e-mail sent to employees of Condé Nast (Fairchild’s parent company) by publisher Chuck Townsend this morning, Kaplan’s editorial purview will soon include Wwd, Wwd.com, and Footwear News, among other Fairchild ventures.
