Despite the decline in theatrical horror releases during the 1990s, the direct-to-video side of the genre was still thriving. So much so that something like Jeff Burr’s Night of the Scarecrow understandably slipped through the cracks after its unnoticed home-video premiere in ‘96. Even aficionados of this regularly dismissed decade of horror might not be aware of the movie’s existence. Nevertheless, longtime fans still consider this to be one of the more notable offerings of scarecrow horror.
It’s not hard to figure out why Night of the Scarecrow got so lost in the shuffle of ‘90s Dtv horror. Jeff Burr claimed only around 12,000 units were shipped back in the bygone days of video shops. Yet, if you came across this movie’s alluring box art in the horror aisle, you couldn’t be blamed for wanting to take a closer look. The alternative artwork — the titular, sickle-wielding villain...

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 9, “Fathers and Sins”
Written by John Wirth and Reed Steiner
Directed by Billy Gierhart
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
From the moment Cullen (Anson Mount) made the decision to hang the young Mormon teenager in the season premiere, it’s been obvious that there was going to be some kind of brutal retaliation from the Mormons at Fort Smith. Like most things this season, the story has been a slow burn leading to the bloody fight in “Fathers and Sins”.
There is a light humor to most of the episode, until Elam (Common), Ezra (Tayden Marks), and Cullen are chased into Cheyenne and forced into a shootout. Of course, this is Hell on Wheels, so even the lighter moments are tainted with sadness. Ruth’s (Kasha Kropinski) guilt at her involvement in Shaun’s death and Elam’s drunken stupor have become major...

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 3: “Range War”
Written by Reed Steiner
Directed by Dennie Gordon
Airs Saturdays at 9 pm (Et) on AMC
When a show changes show runners there is usually a difficult transition that causes it to suffer. The arrival of John Wirth caused some concern amongst fans when it was announced, but if the first three episodes of Hell on Wheels are any indication, the change has gone smoothly.
“Range War” seems to encompass the ugliness that is the camp. From scalping and to what Eva (Robin McLeavy) describes as “old whore syndrome”, Hell on Wheels is not only a brutal place physically, but also mentally. This is portrayed by the almost hyper energy that radiates off the early scenes this week, seen often through Cullen (Anson Mount).

NCIS, Season 10, Episode 8: “Gone”
Written by Reed Steiner and Scott Williams
Directed by James Whitmore, Jr.
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
When season ten was still shrouded in mystery, a fresh new year waiting to arrive, there was plenty of hopeful speculation concerning possible stories that might unfold throughout the upcoming episodes. One popular hypothetical was the pairing of Abby and Ziva in an undercover mission. While they aren’t technically undercover, Abby and Ziva come the closest to a professional partnership that they will likely ever get for the remainder of the season.
Ziva takes it upon herself to act as a surrogate to Lydia Wade (Kirsten Prout), a teenage girl whose father was murdered during the kidnapping of her best friend, Rosie. Abby and Ziva both work with Lydia to help her identify the men responsible. Where Cote de Pablo’s performance lacked an emotional...

Melinda McGraw is coming to NCIS November 1 as the ex-wife of Gibbs ... and Fornell.
The episode title? "Devil's Triangle." What led both men to marry this woman (Fornell has a daughter with her, as well), and where do things stand between all of them now?
An an interview with EW, which first obtained the photo below, executive producer Gary Glasberg says that with the arrival of Diane Sterling, neither man will know what hit him.
Finding the right woman to spar with Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and FBI Agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano), who have developed quite a rapport over the years, was a task in itself.
“When this part first came up it was a big question of who we could find that would be able to really make something of the banter that we wanted between this character’s two ex-husbands,” Glasberg said. “[Gibbs and Fornell] are two formidable, very unique characters...

Wait a minute...S.W.A.T. is coming back? Who the hell wants another S.W.A.T. movie? The coolest thing about the movie is the TV show, and the coolest thing about the TV show is the theme song (a number one hit for Rhythm Heritage back in '76). But another movie just doesn't get my vote.
If you're on the fence, try this on for size: Columbia has reportedly hired Benny Boom (Next Day Air) to direct a script by TV writing vet Reed Steiner. I say, Benny Boom from Next Day Air will direct it. Benny. Boom.

Dilemma: Director Benny Boom, the guy responsible for the underrated 2009 comedy “Next Day Air”, has been tagged to deliver the sequel to Clark Johnson’s abysmal action flick “S.W.A.T.”, a film I happen to despise with a passion. How do I justify watching the follow-up to a picture I absolutely loathe? According to Slash Film, “S.W.A.T.: Fire Fight”, penned by veteran television scribe Reed Steiner, is set to begin production this April, though for the life of me, I can’t understand why. Apparently it made Columbia Pictures a decent stack of money during its theatrical run, but I’ve never encountered a single person who genuinely liked the original. It’s a pretty safe bet that none of the actors from the first installment will return for the sequel. Unless, of course, Michelle Rodriguez needs to hire another lawyer.

Do you remember the 2003 action crime thriller S.W.A.T. directed by Clark Johnson, starring Colin Farrell, Samuel L Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Michelle Rodriguez? Yeah, me neither. Well the film made Sony over $200 million in worldwide box office receipts, which is apparently enough to warrant a sequel. Columbia Pictures, Original Film, and producer Neal Moritz have apparently hired Next Day Air director Benny Boom to helm the sequel. The film, titled S.W.A.T.: Fire-Fight, already has a screenplay written by Reed Steiner, a television writer/produceer on Nash Bridges, The District, The Shield, Invasion, and NCIS. The sequel will follow Lapd Lieutenant Paul Cutler, who is transferred to a Swat team in Detroit and "finds himself the target of a homicidal genius who is protected by government officials." I'm guessing this is a direct-to-dvd sequel, but I'm not 100% positive. All we know is that production is set...

Screen Gems’ previously announced remake of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah-directed thriller Straw Dogs is one step closer to the screen. The studio has signed on James Marsden (X-Men) to star in the film, which is being directed by Rod Lurie (Nothing But the Truth, The Last Castle). The new Straw Dogs follows Los Angeles screenwriter David Sumner (Marsden), who moves with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, leading to a violent confrontation. TV vet Reed Steiner (NCIS, The Shield, Nash Bridges) penned the screenplay. The original, which Peckinpah co-wrote with David Zelag Goodman, saw Dustin Hoffman in the role of Sumner, with the story set in rural England. It also starred Susan George and received critical acclaim, but also received much controversy, particularly for a brutal rape scene. Both films are based on...
