- Chilean-born Hollywood import Vernon Steele began as a supporting actor on Broadway in 1906. He was a bit part player in silent films, eventually graduating to leads and regressing back to lesser roles during the talkies. He had, at least, a fine bass voice used to good effect as King James in Captain Blood (1935).
