Romance. Adventure. Bickering. Mudslides. Alligators are ready to devour you at a moment’s notice. This is all at the heart of Romancing the Stone – the movie and the production. Before it became a hit with audiences – which took some time itself – the script was developed by a sole waitress…before landing at the feet of an Oscar winner before bouncing between studios before finding itself the victim of poor press before a miraculous recovery at the box office. With additional backstories of mended feuds, career skyrocketing, and tragic deaths, it reads like something out of a book – not those trashy paperbacks but almost something even more unbelievable: the making of Romancing the Stone.
So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to this movie?!
Romancing the Stone began where so many romances do: a diner! It was while working as a waitress in Malibu, California, in the late ‘70s that...

1923 Episode 3
Being finite, even by definition, should never be seen as a limitation. There’s something to be said about the simple fact that all things must end, something can be reassuring within it, and there is something almost beautiful about that fact.
It’s also a fact that fans of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe will recognize from the last few seasons of television that he has written. While Yellowstone’s current season stops to smell the roses, 1923 continues its premiere season with purpose and drive. If you missed last week’s episode, “Nature’s Empty Throne” – the show gave its audience a Christmas gift so large, it required a specialty-sized roll of paper just to gift wrap it.
Last week, change was in the air all over the world for members of the Dutton family, as Spencer (Brandon Sklenar), fresh off his latest hunt...

A romance writer stranded in Upstate New York during a freak snowstorm finds herself torn between two hunky guys in the heartwarming seasonal movie, Must Love Christmas. Sounds like a juicy plot torn from one of the protagonist’s popular books! It’s true, writer Mark Amato says, “fiction and real life collide” in this story studded with furtive glances and delightful Yuletide decorations. “She’s basically the Danielle Steel of the holiday genre,” says Liza Lapira, who plays famed novelist Natalie Wolfe — a departure from the butt-kicking Air Force sniper turned vigilante justice seeker she plays on The Equalizer. “The wizard behind the curtain of all these cute Christmas novels is this neurotic New Yorker who’s sadly all alone in her Brooklyn brownstone.” (Credit: Bettina Strauss/CBS) While she’s beloved by fans, Natalie has lost her fire after being humiliated by an unflattering article and become something...

Who knew when the year began that a sequel to a 36-year-old movie starring its 60-year-old actor who headlined the original would be the box office champ so far this year? But “Top Gun: Maverick” starring Tom Cruise, which was released Aug. 23 on digital formats while still flying high in theaters is not only the No. 1 film of the year with a staggering haul of 683.4 million domestically and 720 million overseas. And the acclaimed film didn’t even play in China or Russia. “Top Gun: Maverick” is also the biggest film of Cruise’s career which began in 1981 with Franco Zeffirelli’s “Endless Love.”
And with the digital release, let’s relive 1986, the year we first felt the need for speed and flew into the danger zone. The year the original “Top Gun” took our breath away.

The fourth season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” is set in 1986. Talk about déjà vu.
The top movie of the year was “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise and this year, the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” is the top flick earning nearly 582 million in North America. “Cobra Kai,”the TV sequel to “Karate Kid,” is one of the most popular series on Netflix and several “Star Trek” series have blasted off on “Paramount+.
A handful the top ten TV series including “Cheers,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “The Golden Girls” are living on in repeats. One of the top series, “60 Minutes,” is still chugging away on CBS after 54 seasons making it the longest running primetime series on the small screen. And Michael J. Fox, who won the Emmy that year for “Family Ties,” will receive an honorary Oscar this fall.

A close-up of textures and floating tendrils dance around the screen as the cast names come on screen. As the camera zooms out, the viewer realizes the images are in fact macro close-ups of a human eyeball. Director Michael Mohan wanted to throwback to erotic thrillers such as “Basic Instinct” and “Body Heat” for the title sequence to his new film, “The Voyeurs,” now streaming on Amazon Prime. The familiar florid font was inspired by the book covers of romance novelist Danielle Steel.
Mohan worked with title director Teddy Blank to put the sequence together. “The Voyeurs” stars “The White Lotus” actress Sydney Sweeney as optometrist Pippa. With her boyfriend Thomas (Justice Smith), the two become unreasonably consumed with watching the randy across-the-street neighbors.
Mohan and Blank breakdown the title sequence and how it almost didn’t happen.
What were some of the initial conversations you had surrounding the title sequence?...

In his super-prolific career Rishi Kapoor did a lot of junk films. The movies were rancid in their demerits. But Rishi was never short of a miracle even in the films that insulted his incredible talent. Try these, and you’ll know what I mean.
1.Zehreela Insaan (1974): Right after the gentle romance of Bobby, Rishi Kapoor pasted a mean moustache on his face and played a grey character, a rebel without a cause who can only be tamed by his beloved Masterji, played by Pran who played Rishi’s stern father in Bobby. Rishi falls in love with two women. The first played by Moushumi Chatterjee is forcibly married to a shady man. She ends up a sex worker. After decades of A-list fame and high-fashion red carpet moments, one would think designers would jump at the chance to dress Jane Seymour.
But while reflecting on all things fashion during a recent interview with The Guardian, the 68-year-old actress revealed that’s actually not the case: “…nowadays not every designer will dress someone my age,” the Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman star told the outlet.
Luckily, Seymour doesn’t mind repeating outfits.
“I don’t care whether re-wearing clothes is acceptable or not — if I’m feeling the dress and the occasion, and if it fits, then I’ll wear it again,...

The thought is almost too wild to entertain, but there exists a parallel universe in which Rachel got written off — or worse, recast — in “Friends.” The New York-set sitcom that defined the 1990s and ran into the early aughts, created by Marta Kaufman and David Crane, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its pilot episode this September. To mark the occasion, culture historian Saul Austerlitz has written a book, “Generation Friends,” detailing the history of the show, from inception to grand finale. Advance excerpts of the book obtained by EW reveal the potential casting snafu.
Apparently Aniston had already shot a few episodes of an unaired CBS sitcom titled “Muddling Through” when she was cast in “Friends.” If the series had been picked up, Aniston would have had to leave “Friends” halfway through the first season.
Here’s the relevant excerpt:

Henri Bollinger, a five-time president of the Publicists Guild and a fixture for decades at its signature Publicists Guild Award luncheon, died Monday at the Motion Picture & Television Fund campus in Woodland Hills of complications from surgery, Deadline has learned. He was 89.
Bollinger’s Hollywood publicity career spanned 60 years. He joined the then-Publicists Guild of America in 1957, the second year of its existence.
Recalling those early years to writer Ed Crane in the Publicists Awards’ 50th anniversary program, Bollinger said, “attendance at General Membership meetings ranged between 150-200 members. In those days you were fined $15 if you missed a meeting [held usually at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel] without a valid reason.”
He served for more than 55 years on the Publicists Awards Committee, which organizes the annual ICG Publicists Awards Luncheon held at the Beverly Hilton. He was chairman of the committee for 37 years, retiring from that position earlier this year, though remaining a committee member.

If you think it’s tough for a writer in 2018, imagine how Margaret Atwood felt at the beginning of her career. “It was impossible,” the celebrated author says. “I was starting out in Canada in the 1950s. There was no market. I thought I would have to have a day job.”
Her back-up plan could have made her into the next Danielle Steel. “I thought I’d write true romances,” Atwood says. “But I tried, and I basically couldn’t do it. I was 18, what can I tell you? It bogged down in the middle. I could do the plots, but I couldn’t do the prose. It was in the age of dots. Something happened on the sofa, and then they were …” She pauses. “Dot, Dot, Dot! I couldn’t do that.”

Being friends with Bill Murray has had some drawbacks for Mitch Glazer. Since the former SNL Mvp, poetry aficionado and part-time party crasher doesn't have an agent or a manager, total strangers call Glazer up to see if he will convince the man to be in their movies. And it also means that Murray calls him up whenever Road House is on TV, to deliver a play-by-play commentary on the scene where Patrick Swayze has sex with Kelly Lynch (Glazer's wife). But it also means that the writer-director gets to...

Rock the Kasbah
Written by Mitch Glazer
Directed by Barry Levinson
USA, 2015
That noise you hear is the sound of Elaine May celebrating. She’s no longer the architect of Hollywood’s most ill-conceived Middle East comedy. That’s an exaggeration, of course, as Rock the Kasbah never reaches the goofy heights (or depths) of May’s notorious bomb, Ishtar. Still, it’s hard to imagine what legendary director Barry Levinson and uber-cool demigod Bill Murray were thinking. From the off-kilter script to the uneven performances, this movie is bafflingly bad. Even Murray seems adrift in what, presumably, started as a vehicle for his particular genius. Rock the Kasbah is 2015’s biggest head scratcher.
Perhaps through sheer will alone, Barry Levinson (Diner, Rain Man, Wag the Dog) still manages to keep Rock the Kasbah a fascinating failure. What begins as a raunchy, quasi-satirical road picture ends as a queasy tribute to “disgraced” Afghan Star contestant,...

A Bill Murray – which is to say, a performer of particular stripes that enjoys almost unanimous affection from moviegoers – is a rare and precious thing. As much a performance artist these days as he is an actor, Murray himself has settled into being the communal whacky uncle on our mom’s side (dad’s is where you’ll find Tom Hanks). Murray is a piece of modern Americana, as close to a folk hero as Hollywood has ever produced, and it’s by his grace that many poorer projects find their silver lining. But like any legend, that reverence can be exploited to justify undertakings of odious construction and intent, which Murray’s latest film, Rock the Kasbah, most certainly is.
That this movie likely wouldn’t exist without Murray’s involvement makes it tempting to point an accusing finger squarely at him, but we’re all to blame here.

Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. A veteran entertainment journalist looks back at the long, hard road the young star has taken—and whether her most recent comeback will stick.
One of the perks of being a veteran entertainment editor at fashion magazines has been the opportunity to watch the likes of Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna literally grow up before my eyes—and evolve from awkward albeit preternaturally driven teenagers into the global superstars of today. I have also relished the opportunity to peer behind the curtain of Photoshop and see these young women as they really are, warts and all. Danielle Steel, the San Francisco and Paris-based "Queen of Romance" novelist who has sold 600 million books in 70 countries and 45 languages, has been awarded France's highest honor, the Legion d'honneur, say news reports. Steel joins such other non-French culture figures as Walt Disney, Julia Child, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Alan Greenspan, Bob Dylan, Bono and novelist Philip Roth in being recognized for what the Agence France-Presse calls "service to France or work that is deemed to uphold its ideals." Britain's The Telegraph quotes the author, 66, as saying: "I love French literature. Colette is a special favorite of mine." Born Danielle-Fernande Dominique Schulein-Steel in New York,...

I resent the term guilty pleasure. My girlfriends in particular have a way of dismissing their cruder entertainment indulgences, sheepishly admitting that they whipped through the Fifty Shades books or have seen all of Katherine Heigl’s movies. My feeling is, Hey, whatever gets you through a plane ride. I don’t hear guys apologizing for obsessing over their fantasy-football lineups or for fussing online about whether Ben Affleck will make a proper Batman.
So I was surprised by the guilt I felt when my 5-year-old daughter caught me watching a rerun of The Real Housewives of Orange County. I...

E.L. James made a big splash with the release of her best-selling trilogy, "Fifty Shades of Grey." The former fan fiction author reportedly made $95 million over the past year, making her the top-earning author between June 2012 and June 2013. A reported 70 million copies of "Fifty Shades of Grey" were sold during the first eight months of the book's release.
Forbes writes that "the e-book format was a key factor" to landing James at the top of the magazine's annual list. Following close behind her was longtime juggernaut James Patterson, who made $91 million in the same time period.

Sex sells. "50 Shades of Grey" author E.L. James topped Forbes' highest-earning authors list with an estimated $95 million over the last 12 months ending in June. It's an auspicious debut on the list for James, who topped list veterans like James Patterson (No. 2 with $91 million) and Danielle Steel (No. 5 with a paltry $26 million). I’ve spent this column space looking at the Oscar race and trying not to offer any of my opinions about how the whole thing was shaping up.
But now the Oscar race is almost over, the voting deadline has passed, and there’s little else to do but judge the outfits, open the envelopes and listen to the speeches. So, I think it’s time I stated my opinion about the film that now seems poised to win Best Picture.
After important wins from all of the industry guilds, including Producers, Directors and, most perplexing, Writers, Argo seems to be the obvious frontfunner for Sunday night's biggest prize. Considering the strength, depth and individualistic voice of most of the other nominees, this, in my humble opinion, is a depressingly mediocre choice.

Could iDreamBooks, a new review aggregation site, be the Rotten Tomatoes for books?
Determining what to read can be tricky, and we each have our go-to methods: Scouring the new release shelves at stores, consulting The New York Times' bestseller list, clicking "You May Also Like" suggestions on Amazon.
Word-of-mouth recommendations reign supreme, as evidenced by "50 Shades of Grey"'s sudden surge of sales before the book was even sold to a major publisher. This phenomenon seems less common in the film industry, possibly because movie reviews are easier to quantify. There are star ratings and the easy-to-consult site, Rotten Tomatoes, to guide viewers towards the most critically acclaimed flicks.
iDreamBooks, a site openly inspired by Rotten Tomatoes, has created a system that aims to aggregate and streamline book reviews, giving new releases from the big six publishers (Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, Random House, and Simon & Schuster) a percentage rating.

With a title like Your Sister.S Sister, I was expecting to see something more along the lines of a Nicholas Sparks or Danielle Steel adaptation rather than the truly hilarious and heartfelt sort-of romantic-dramedy it turned out to be. Jack (Mark Duplass) has had a rough time dealing with the death of his brother, which happened exactly one year ago. Jack.s best friend / late brother.s ex, Iris (Emily Blunt), gives him the keys to her father.s remote cabin for a little alone time to relax and reflect on his life. Once there, he discovers Iris. sister Hanna (Rosemarie DeWitt) is already staying at the cabin after ending a 7-year relationship with her girlfriend. After a drunken night of confession, Jack and Hanna sleep together only to be woken up the next morning by the arrival of Iris, who decided Jack shouldn.t be entirely alone after all.

**Updated with official word from Stephen King** Stephen King shows no signs of slowing down. Last November we saw the release of 11/22/63 and The Wind Through the Keyhole is schedule for wide release later this month. The Shining sequel, title Dr. Sleep, isn’t expected until next year, so it made fans wonder if King would release a new book between now and then. We aren’t sure when this book will be released, but it has been revealed that he’s working on a new story revolving around an amusement park serial killer.
This news comes from a recent interview conducted by Neil Gaiman in The Times: “That’s the desk that King sits at every day, and it is where he writes. Right now he’s writing a book called Joyland, about an amusement park serial killer. Below the window is a patch of well-fenced land, with an...

Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga are Forbes' two highest-earning women in entertainment, with $290 million $90 million, respectively. The rest of the top ten is varied but reminds that TV makes fortunes: Bethenny Frankel (reality star and Skinny Girl owner) - $55 million, supermodel Gisele Bundchen - $45 million, pop star Taylor Swift - $45 million, Ellen DeGeneres - $45 million, Judge Judy Sheindlin - $45 million, pop star Katy Perry - $44 million, pop star and new Academy member Beyonce Knowles - $35 million, and author Danielle Steel - $35 million. The media mogul – who quit her successful chat show earlier this year after 25 years to focus on running her own network - made $290 million between May 2010 and May 2011 to top Forbes' Highest Earning Hollywood Women list, ahead of celebrities including Lady Gaga, Gisele Bundchen and Ellen DeGeneres.
Her closest competitor 'You and I' hitmaker Gaga only managed to make $90 million in the same period, $200 million less than Oprah, while former 'Real Housewives of New York' star Bethenny Frankel was third with $55 million thanks to her New York Times bestseller and Skinnygirl food empire.
Supermodel Gisele, talk show host Ellen, TV's Judge Judy Sheindlin and country superstar Taylor Swift all tied for fourth place with earnings of $45 million.

Oprah Winfrey has topped Forbes magazine's annual Hollywood’s Highest-Earning Women list, just two months after Lady Gaga replaced the TV icon as the queen of the publication's 100 Most Powerful Women countdown.
With an estimated $290 million (£181 million) haul from May 2010 to May 2011, Oprah has earned almost $200 million (£125 million) more than Lady Gaga, who comes in a distant second.
Also making the top 10: Gisele Bundchen, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Beyonce and author Danielle Steel.

Lady Gaga may have passed Oprah Winfrey on Forbes’ annual list of The 100 Most Powerful Women this year (Gaga fell from No. 7 to No. 11, while Winfrey slid from No. 3 to No. 14), but Winfrey still sits atop the magazine’s list of Hollywood’s Highest-Earning Women. Winfrey made an estimated $290 million between May 2010 and May 2011, which is $200 million more than Gaga banked in second place. As Forbes notes, however, with Winfrey’s show gone and her network yet to deliver on high expectations, that gap may close come next year’s rankings.

All lives are brief. That is what we learned early in Brief Lives, and now, in the last chapter, the lesson is offered again in various guises. Stories have conclusions, even stories of the Endless. They are Endless, but not Immutable.
Death is feared by all, even those, like Orpheus, who yearn for it for a thousand years. When she arrives, bringing a last border to life, she opens up a vast unknown. (Or perhaps it is not vast. The unknown is, by definition, unknowable until it is known. It could be narrow, tiny, crushing, nothing.) Death is the one constant in an ever-changing universe. (That sentence lies. If the universe is ever-changing, then change is also a constant. Death and change dance together in the ever-changing universe.)
Now that we have reached the last chapter of Brief Lives, we can look at it as a complete tale and not...

New York (Reuters) - American author and entertainment mogul James Patterson has topped a Forbes magazine list of the world's highest paid authors, earning more than twice that of No. 2 Danielle Steel.
Patterson, 64, the dominant mass market fiction author who has published more than 80 books at a prolific rate with the help of collaborators, earned $84 million for the past year, according to the survey based on sales from May 2010 to April 2011. Figures were supplied by Nielsen SoundScan and Forbes considered input from numerous agents, managers and editors.
Steel, also 64, earned $35 million, according to the Forbes survey at www.forbes.com. The magazine said the top earning authors were successfully tapping into e-books, which is the fastest growing section of book publishing, while hardcover sales are in long-term decline.

Every year Forbes releases their Celebrity 100 list which isn't comprised of the richest or most famous celebrities, but rather aims to rank (using, what, I don't know, the Hogwarts Sorting Hat?) and quantify that elusive quality of "celebrity." The Five Categories on which these people are judged are Money and their presence on TV/Radio, in the Press, on the Web, um, in the Social scene. (I secretly suspect there is a swimsuit competition as well.) Once Forbes has thrown America's most famous people through this weird and somewhat arbitrary Hadron Collider, do you know what comes out the other side? For the most part it's the People Who Are Making This Country A Stupider, Duller, Cheesier, Lamer Place. So you can get it a taste, here's the Forbes Top Ten:
1. Lady Gaga
2. Oprah Winfrey
3. Justin Bieber
4. U2 (though I suspect they really mean Bono)
