- Born in Mexico City on October 28 1956, he comes from a family in the movie industry in that country because his father Jesus Sotomayor produced over 91 films. He started as production assistant in the year 1976 on a Telenovela for Televisa by the title "Tele Mecanica Nacional" and from that production he also covered other positions up to being assistant to the director in the series "Toda Una Vida".
In 1981 he moved to Los Angeles, California to specialize as a director on the American Film Institute for two years. Then he went to live in New York City to work for SIN (Spanish International Network) that today is Univision from 1982 to 1985. He was in charge of the editing of the movies to be broadcasted by the network, he produced three soccer matches of the famous "Copa Intercontinental" and also he was the producer of the first Spanish speaking music video show called "Furia de Juventud" for SIN.
In 1985 he went back to Mexico City to work for Televisa as first assistant to the director on the historical series "Senda de Gloria". On this particular case he ended up in charge of the production.
In 1988 "Pasion y Poder" became his first Telenovela as executive producer. This series had great ratings and also was awarded by the press in Mexico and the United States (Spanish speaking) as the best Telenovela of that year.
Sotomayor produced a total of 22 Telenovelas for Televisa. Five of them in English, part of a very ambitious project, to shoot the same story simultaneously in English and Spanish. This project started on a partnership with Fox TV with the co production of Imperio de Cristal and Crystal Empire. He executive produced two historical Telenovelas, "La Antorcha Encendida", based on Mexico's independence and "El Vuelo Del Aguila" about the life of the controversial dictator Porfirio Diaz.
The most successful Telenovelas are "Pasion y Poder", "Cadenas de Amargura", "Valeria y Maximiliano" but most especially "La Mentira" that still is among the most watched Telenovelas in the history of television in Mexico and in the United States topping all the American networks on specific markets like Los Angeles California on its finale week.
In 2005 he produced a Telenovela "La Ley del Silencio" for FremantleMedia in the United States.
Given the gigantic explosion of the digital media Sotomayor decides to take the chance to venture to bring the Telenovela genre to the Internet and mobile platforms. "Vidas Cruzadas" is the title of the Telenovela produced in partnership with Univision.com and Endemol USA. This series consisted of 15 episodes with two of the biggest names in the television market: Kate Del Castillo and Guy Ecker. This series has become the third most watched property in the history of Univision.com- IMDb Mini Biography By: Carlos Sotomayor
