The opening shot of Amazon’s Wilderness features a disproportionately huge spider — probably, for thematic reasons, a black widow, but I’m not an arachnologist — tentatively starting across a stretch of asphalt leading out to a picturesque Southwestern vista.
So why did the black widow cross the road?
We’ll never know, because within two seconds, the spider is squished — don’t worry, representatives of People for the Ethical Treatment of Spiders, it’s clearly CG — by the powder-blue vintage Ford Mustang carrying Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen).
Reader, I laughed. Hard. At least half of why I chose to review this six-episode adaptation of B.E. Jones’ novel is because the opening five seconds portended something appealing pulpy and silly, perhaps in a good way.
And you know what? For maybe three episodes, Wilderness comes close to being the show I wanted it to be. It probably isn’t “good,...

It’s no accident that Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” plays over the opening credits of Prime Video’s new limited series Wilderness. The song, which appears in its rerecorded version, came at the suggestion of writer-producer Marnie Dickens, who felt that the vengeful lyrics mirrored the show’s storyline perfectly.
“Marnie wrote that song into the script for Episode Two, but then Prime asked Marnie if there was a young female artist she wanted [over the credits],” recalls So Yong Kim, who directed all six episodes. “Of course she said Taylor Swift.

The trailer for Prime Video’s Wilderness asks how far is too far to go for revenge. The trailer then seems to answer that question with scenes of a wife imagining ways to kill her cheating husband.

The cast of the thriller also includes Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) as Cara, Eric Balfour (Six Feet Under) as Garth, Claire Rushbrook (Sherwood) as Caryl, Marsha Stephanie Blake (Orange is the New Black) as Detective Rawlins, and Morgana Van Peebles (Superstition) as Ash. Jonathan Keltz (Reign) plays Detective Wiseman, Talia Balsam (Divorce) is Bonnie, Crystal Balint (The Fall of the House of Usher) is Liana, Natalie Sharp (The Flash) plays Marissa, Geoff Gustafson (A Christmas Proposal) is Zach, and Jake Foy (Designated Survivor) is Anton.

Jones, and directed for the screen by filmmaker So Yong Kim. The book's description explains: "Shattered by the discovery of her husband's affair, Liv knows they need to leave the chaos of New York to save their marriage. Maybe the road trip they'd always planned, exploring America's national parks - just the two of them - would help heal the wounds. But what Liv hasn't told her husband is that she has set him three challenges on their trip - three opportunities to prove he's sorry... If he fails? Well, it's dangerous out there in the wilderness; accidents happen all the time. And if it's easy to die, then it's also easy to kill." Uh oh! Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen co-star,...

Netflix’s long-awaited The Sandman — based on Neil Gaiman’s much-loved comic series — proved to be something of a hit for the streamer, amassing a billion minutes of viewing and storming to the top of its own charts just three days after its release back in August. The series also managed to charm both critics and fans, praised for its lavish fantasy world and the emotional depth of it characters.
A significant amount of the noise has centered on Johanna Constantine, the occult detective with a penchant for exorcisms. Jenna Coleman plays two iterations of the character: one based in the modern day (effectively a gender-flipper version of DC superhero John Constantine), the other her identical 18th-century ancestor. Although Johanna only appeared in a few episodes, it wasn’t long before there were calls for her to be given her own spinoff series.

Roar is what happens when a group of five-star chefs combine their talents, roll up their sleeves, and wind up making a garbage plate. All the ingredients are there, and all the skill, but it somehow adds up to a muddled creation that’s less than the sum of its parts.

The worst part of “Roar” is also its most consistent. While every episode of Apple’s new anthology show tackles an entirely different story with a different cast to match, they each open with a neon graphic of a woman’s mouth screaming out of a blooming flower. With this image, “Roar” underlines its logline as a feminist scream of a series that, as based on Ceceila Ahern’s book of short stories, explores “what it means to be a woman today.” Watching its trailer, which leans heavily on wackier moments like Nicole Kidman shoving photographs down her throat, you’d be excused for assuming it’s an exaggerated comedy of girlboss errors. Watching the actual show, though, makes for a bit of a more scattered experience.
From Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, “Roar” tells eight stories of eight women whose dissatisfaction with their situations — whether rooted in shame, guilt,...

In our modern age, where audiences demand a never-ending stream of their preferred story, episodic anthology series can be a tough sell. People don’t want to watch one episode of something, only to start over 30 minutes later with a new set of characters in a new setting with new stakes — or, depending on your faith in humanity, networks don’t want to risk losing subscribers by providing a quick, clean ending, rather than lock them in for 11 hours. After all, when you’re beginning anew every episode, the odds that they’ll all be of equal interest, let alone quality, drop off.
But that hasn’t stopped great episodic series from being produced. “Room 104” stretched its horror conceit to exciting extremes. “High Maintenance” transported us to various New York venues with compassionate character portraits. “Little America” found distinctly charming avenues into American immigrants’ lives. Some people watch “Black Mirror.

Joshua Jackson has a wicked new role.
Peacock on Monday released the official trailer for its upcoming miniseries, Dr. Death.
The Peacock Original limited series will stream arrive on the streamer this summer, and let's just say it's a cool new direction for Joshua Jackson.
Based on Wondery’s hit podcast, Dr. Death is inspired by the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community.
Young, charismatic and ostensibly brilliant, Dr. Duntsch was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed.
Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and left permanently maimed or dead.
As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb), set out to stop him.

Avoiding the trappings of other melodramas about the short lives of terminally ill teens, Asia is a restrained and nuanced exploration of the relationship between a mother and daughter. Anchored by two knockout performances, Shira Haas (currently starring in Netflix’s Unorthodox) plays the 17-year-old Vika and Alena Yiv is Asia, her 35-year-old single mother who is a nurse working the night shift at a local hospital. Asia immigrated to Israel from Russia, taking her daughter away from an absentee father and, in doing so for reasons that become clear later in the picture, keeps her close to her side.
Asia spends her nights away from Vika working and later we discover picking up on where she may have left off as a young woman: going to bars and having sex with a regular acquaintance on his car on the top of a wooded hill. Vika also experiments with drinking down at a skatepark,...

“Tales From the Loop” has all the elements of a mystery box show, except it’s largely — and wisely — uninterested in its mystery. Set in a small Ohio town at an undisclosed time, the new science-fiction series from creator Nathaniel Halpern (a writer on “Legion”) tracks the lives of various locals who are affected by the titular “Loop”: a massive black machine housed underground within an experimental physics center.
So, what’s this machine do? As the company’s founder, Russ (Jonathan Pryce), explains to his grandson, Cole (Duncan Joiner), The Loop “makes the impossible, possible.”

One of TV’s biggest potential selling points in its current state is Total Creative Freedom. The extent to which that’s a reality for anyone outside showrunner auteurs commanding nine-figure development deals is suspect, but there’s an ever-growing mythos around television as a place where creative ambitions face fewer speedbumps. Since its inception two years ago, the HBO anthology series “Room 104” has been one of the best-case scenarios of this lack of constraint.
Still, even as episodes flit around between genres and a bevy of different creative voices, the show is working within one of the wildest restrictions of any show on TV: staging every episode inside an unassuming motel room. In the show’s Season 3, debuting Friday night on HBO, “Room 104” goes to its greatest lengths yet to ensure that none of these dozen new episodes feel like what the show has done before.

A second group of filmmakers have petitioned WarnerMedia to reconsider its decision to shutter FilmStruck at month’s end. Here is . the second letter
To whom it may concern at Turner and Warner Bros. Digital Networks:
Roger Ebert once said “the movies are like a machine that generates empathy. It lets you understand a little bit more about different hopes, aspirations, dreams and fears. It helps us to identify with the people who are sharing this journey with us.”
No truer words.
Though we live in a world with increasing ways to view content, the range of content and the variety of storytellers has remained, sadly, limited.
In its short two years of existence FilmStruck was a machine that generated empathy by curating not only classic Hollywood films, but by streaming and highlighting world cinema, cinema by female, traditionally disenfranchised, and Lgbt filmmakers and storytellers. FilmStruck added a depth,...

Childhood can be a very complicated period if you take into account the family context of oneself. It may be that the protagonists of the film (Hee Yeon Kim and Song Hee Kim), the sweet and tender Bin and Jin, are not truly aware of what they’re going through, and it is not until adolescence or even adult life where they will realize how much they have suffered.

Directing your first feature is always a daunting experience, but it’s hard to imagine that anyone has ever been better prepared for that particular challenge than Paul Dano.
