If you’ve just finished the movie and are asking yourself if Novakovic’s Bloodline Killer is a slasher or a horror, it’s not. Don’t let the Google search or the makers fool you; it doesn’t even qualify to be called a thriller either. Shawnee Smith plays Moira Cole, who is trying to save her family from her obsessive cousin, and you thought family gatherings weren’t fun without the cousins?

The Story: A goofball gym teacher (Mark Harmon) is forced to teach a remedial English class over the summer.
The Players: Starring: Mark Harmon, Kirstie Alley, Dean Cameron, Courtney Thorne-Smith & Shawnee Smith. Music by Danny Elfman. Directed by Carl Reiner.
The History: Hollywood spent a couple of years trying to make Mark Harmon happen as a movie star. Fresh off an arc on “St. Elsewhere” which infamously had his character contract AIDS from a one-night stand, his career was red hot. For a while, he was seriously considered to replace Don Johnson on “Miami Vice” after contract negotiations fell through, and in 1987-88, we got a bunch of starring vehicles that would try him out in a variety of genres to see if one would stick. He did action in The Presidio (even doing his own stunts – although the film was stolen by co-star Sean Connery), drama in Stealing Home,...

"You think it's him, don't you?" Vertical has debuted the trailer for an indie horror film titled Bloodline Killer, the latest from indie filmmaker Ante Novakovic. This is set for release later in April if anyone wants to confront the masked killer in this. Bloodline Killer is a terrifying horror-thriller that follows Moira Cole who endeavors to rebuild her shattered life after the murder of her family at the hands of her deranged and obsessed cousin. However, Moira is reminded of these painful memories every October as her own survival story was optioned into a successful film series called The Skulleton. Ha! Another intriguing meta genre film concept! This horror stars Shawnee Smith as Moira, plus Taryn Manning, Drew Moerlein, James Gaudioso, Montanna Gillis, Kresh Novakovic, Adam Shippey, Anthony Gaudioso, with Bruce Dern & Tyrese Gibson. This is a terrifying trailer with intense scenes in it. But will the film be any good?...

Whether you love or hate them, remakes have been around for a long time, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. An update on The Crow is set to arrive this summer, with Hollywood’s version of Speak No Evil not far behind, just as two upcoming examples.
While not all remakes can hold a candle to the original, there’s been no shortage of fantastic movies that reworked genre favorites in thrilling new ways. Some of which even managed to eclipse the original classics, like 1986’s The Fly or 1982’s The Thing.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror remakes that set themselves apart from the source material, either through expanded storytelling or heightened, visceral horror.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Stephen King made it very well known that he wasn’t a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of his book The Shining, so seventeen years later he took the chance to bring the story to the screen himself. He wrote the script for a three-part mini-series that was directed by Mick Garris and aired on ABC back in 1997 – and tomorrow, March 12th, Scream Factory is giving the mini-series version of The Shining a Blu-ray release! Copies are available for purchase at This Link.
The mini-series version of The Shining has the following synopsis: Jack Torrance and his family move into the sprawling, vacant Overlook Hotel to get away from it all. Away from the alcoholism that derails Jack’s writing career. Away from the violent outbursts that mar Jack’s past. But Jack’s young son Danny knows better. He possesses a psychic gift called the shining — a gift...

20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.
In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.
Despite being often maligned by detractors for its mindless sadism, fans are just as much invested in the series’ soap opera-esque melodrama as the innovative death traps. Formulaic though the general plots may be, the non-linear storyline is deceptively...

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

The "Saw" films will continue to slice and dice their way into theaters until morale improves -- or until audiences finally get tired of the über-successful horror franchise. If the universal acclaim and strong box office performance of "Saw X" proved anything, however, it's that a return to its roots was sorely needed. As the eleventh film in the series is scheduled to release later this year, that theme is about to continue in a big way.
We haven't been told much about the cast or even the plot of "Saw XI" since the sequel was first announced back in December of last year, though it's been easy to imagine the creative team picking up on the ongoing prequel storyline almost exactly where they last left off. While the involvement of the man, myth, and legend Tobin Bell remains unclear, we now know that at least one other franchise veteran...

The long-running Saw franchise is headed back to the big screen this Halloween season, with the box office success of last year’s Saw X paving the way for this year’s Saw XI.
Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report this week that Saw X director Kevin Greutert will return to direct the upcoming Saw XI! In addition to Saw X, Greutert directed both Saw VI in 2009 and later Saw: The Final Chapter in 2010, along with the horror movies Jessabelle in 2014 and Jackals more recently in 2017. He also edited Saw I through V and Jigsaw.
This has to be considered very good news for Saw fans, as most felt that Saw X was a much-needed course direction for the franchise, finally bringing it back to the highs of the past. 2023 was a good year for villains. With social media discourse at an all-time low, public figures taking constant swipes at each other, and A.I. poised to render all news meaningless, it seems like the year was filled with nefarious people coming out of the woodwork to make our lives a little more stressful.
But no matter what nightmares we saw playing out in real life, we could rest in the knowledge that something equally evil or maybe even worse would be showing at our local cineplex or streaming platform. The horror genre is filled with larger-than-life foes from centuries-old monsters to futuristic killers and this year gave us villains in spades.
Some are humorous, some tragic, some pulled from reality, and some difficult to pin down. But regardless of their stories, the following ten villains made our lives just a little more terrifying – and if we don’t honor them here,...

Hollywood reeled in 2023. There’s no way around that. From striking creatives to the existential crisis of theatrical futures, this year held the entire entertainment industry in its death-like grasp. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough double down on the audience least likely to abandon ship. And anyone who’s actually sat and counted how many annual horror conventions there are knows exactly which audience to bet on.
It’s entirely possible that horror is the most stable and reliable movie genre, but just because its demographic is almost certainly the most voracious doesn’t mean they’re the least discerning. If anything, the list of films that almost made our top 10 would alone be ample ballast for the argument that horror aficionados cast their nets wider than fans of other genres. Take this list as a starting point, and then take it way further than you ever dared.

'Saw XI' is set to be released in 2024.Lionsgate has officially announced plans for another instalment in the long running horror franchise and fans only have nine months to wait. The studio surprised fans by confirming the news out of nowhere on Monday (11.12.23) with a Saw-style backdrop and Roman numerals spelling out a September 27, 2024 release date. The caption simply read: "The game continues."It means the 11th movie in the iconic series will drop a year after 'Saw X' hit the big screen on September 29 this year.Although the turnaround seems fast, the franchise has managed it before with the success of 'Saw' prompting a sequel to be greenlit and released just 364 days later. Each subsequent 'Saw' movie was then released less than a year after its predecessor until 'Saw 3D' - the seventh in the franchise - which came 371 days after 'Saw VI'.

Jigsaw will be back inflict pain once more in Saw XI, and the new film is arriving in 2024: more details here.
It is rare for any franchise to reach ten films. It is even rarer for the tenth film to receive some of the best reviews of the series.
Such was the case with Saw X, the film that put Tobin Bell front and centre one again as malicious vigilante John Kramer/Jigsaw.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the impressive box office returns of Saw X, Lionsgate has confirmed that it is pressing ahead with Saw XI.
You won’t have to wait long to see it either, as the official Saw social media accounts posted an image stating the sequel would be with us in just over nine months time, on the 27th September 2024.

Lionsgate is back with a bang, announcing “Saw XI” with a slated release date of September 27, 2024. The news came out of the blue, especially since “Saw X” graced theaters just over two months ago. The announcement was made on Instagram, intriguing fans with Roman numerals set against a spooky “Saw” backdrop.
The “Saw” franchise is no stranger to fast-paced releases. Echoing the quick success of the earlier films, “Saw XI” is following closely on the heels of its predecessor. This pattern of rapid production has been a hallmark of the series since “Saw II” rushed to screens just a year after the original.

Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw returned in this year’s Saw X and it was a huge success, not only in the box office ($107M worldwide) but also on Rotten Tomatoes where it currently sits with an 80% critic and 89% audience score.
It comes as no surprise that Lionsgate is moving forward with the next installment, Saw XI, which has been dated for September 27, 2024, almost exactly one year from the latest film’s release.
The news came across the official socials where the studio shared teaser art and the tagline: “The Game Continues…”
No director has been announced but I think it’s a safe bet that Kevin Greutert will return, as will Tobin Bell and likely Shawnee Smith as Amanda. We’ll share the official announce when it comes in.

There are some people out there who will tell you the reason they like the "Saw" movies is because of the complex moral and ethical dilemmas they submerge their conflicted characters into. And that John Kramer, the most conflicted of them all, is among the most compelling villains in modern horror history -- if he's a true villain at all.
Well, I think everyone else is going to see heads smashed by blocks of ice and eyeballs sucked out of their sockets.
However you feel about the "Saw" movies, you can't deny that the decisive factor in their appeal is the blood, guts, and carnage. Tobin Bell's Kramer, known to his victims as Jigsaw, and his apprentices Amanda (Shawnee Smith) and Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) have devised all manner of dastardly traps over the years to unjustly punish mildly flawed people teach bad people big lessons. As the series has gone on,...

What began as a simple two-hander about strangers chained in a squalid bathroom, enduring the twisted games of a mysterious tormentor, has evolved into an intricate saga spanning nearly twenty years and ten gruesome films. With every new "Saw" movie, the traps become bigger and more brutal, the timelines increasingly jumbled, and the twists even more mind-boggling. Each "Saw" entry delves deeper into (and complicates) the maniacal Jigsaw philosophy that forces people to confront their sins and appreciate the life they've been given.
Often regarded as part of the controversial horror subgenre "torture porn" (even though we may need to retire that term forever), the "Saw" films feature graphic depictions of mutilation and extreme violence in elaborate devices that are not for the faint of heart. While it can be daunting to tackle such a visceral and temporally complex series, there is really only one solid path to follow when...

From the mid to late aughts, October horror was dominated by one word: Saw. In an impressive streak, the grisly franchise celebrated seven straight years with a new entry just in time for Halloween. Though sequels have been sporadic since the 2010 film Saw: The Final Chapter, this autumn brought another tale from Jigsaw’s world of twisted morality and the return of the legendary killer himself. Director Kevin Greutert’s story follows John Kramer (Tobin Bell) on a quest for revenge, but the film also features a fan favorite character and one of the saga’s first survivors. Set between the first and second franchise entries, Saw X sees the return of Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) as an assistant/disciple of the dying murderer. Though her position in Jigsaw’s army would later be usurped by others, Amanda remains the franchise’s most heartbreaking character and the greatest condemnation of Jigsaw’s sociopathy.

John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back. The most disturbing instalment of the Saw franchise yet explores the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s most personal game. Set between the events of Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through devious, deranged, and ingenious traps.

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”

If you are a fan of horror films, you are in for a treat this October. Both films are sequels to iconic horror franchises that have terrified audiences for decades. Here is what you need to know about these films before you watch them.
The Exorcist: Believer
The Exorcist: Believer is the sixth installment in The Exorcist franchise, and serves as a sequel to the original 1973 film. It follows a photographer who must confront the nadir of evil when his daughter and her best friend are possessed by a demonic force. Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise, is currently in theatres (you can read our review Here) – and so far the movie has pulled in almost $60 million at the global box office, so we’re probably going to be seeing a Saw 11 sooner than later. In fact, the producers were already talking sequel before the movie was released. But during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Kevin Greutert, who previously directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter (and also edited the first five films, plus Jigsaw) said he intended for the movie to feel like the final send-off to the Jigsaw character.
When asked about what could be coming next for the franchise, Greutert said, “Well, we’ll just have to see what the future of Saw is. There are so many directions we could go, but for me, there’s no obvious one coming out of this film.

If anyone deserved to be at the helm of the Saw franchise’s first critically acclaimed film, it’s Saw X director Kevin Greutert. The editor-turned-director has been credited on every single Saw film, be it as an editor, director or executive producer, beginning with James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s original Saw (2004). Greutert chalks Saw X’s success up to an accessible plot and the calculated risk of asking the audience to empathize more than ever with the franchise’s signature antagonist, John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell).
“We took a risk by really fleshing out John Kramer’s character. It’s contrary to the Jaws and Alien wisdom that the less you see of your monster, the better. If this movie had a chance, it was going to be by going deep into John Kramer,” Greutert tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young in Saw X. Photo Credit: Alexandro Bolaños Escamilla The last time Shawnee Smith shot a Saw film was when she made Saw VI back in 2009. Of course, after (spoiler alert!) her character, Amanda, was killed at the end of Saw III, Smith wasn’t expecting to be in any of the franchise’s movies as it went on. (The scenes she filmed for Saw VI were flashbacks.) One thing she definitely hadn’t counted on was the idea of adding an “in-between sequel,” like they have with Saw X. It takes place between Saw and Saw II, so Amanda is alive and well and once again in a starring role. This will come as good news for Amanda’s fans; Smith says she’s met many of those fans over the years, and she absolutely loves them. (Click on the media bar below to hear Shawnee Smith) https://www.

Warning: this post will contain spoilers for "Saw X."
Throughout the 10 extant "Saw" movies, there have been at least 94 on-screen deaths, most of them quite gruesome. A few people do manage to escape the death traps that Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) locked them into, but many of the vengeful villain's victims aren't so lucky. Audiences have witnessed human bodies being ripped apart, burned, or colorfully torn to pieces. And we all have our favorites, don't we? Ranking the traps and/or deaths in the "Saw" movies is a common practice among horror fans. /Film even ranked all of the franchise's deaths back in 2017, when there were only 81 to sift through.
Many might agree that the "reverse bear trap" from the very first "Saw" is probably the best one. Indeed, it was so notorious, that it would be brought back for "Saw VI" and "Saw 3D." In the latter film, it finally managed to kill its wearer.

The tenth installment in Lionsgate’s long-running horror franchise, Saw X is playing in theaters nationwide, and Lionsgate is surely happy with the box office results over the weekend.
Saw X scared up a reported $18 million in its opening weekend here in the United States, with the new movie’s worldwide total sitting at $29,300,000 just days into its release.
That $18 million domestic number marks the franchise’s highest opening weekend since Saw 3D back in 2010, and it also matches the $18 million opening of the original Saw in 2004.
An $18 million opening weekend is a far cry from the franchise-high $33 million opening of Saw III, mind you, but it’s also the strongest the series has been in over 10 years. The decision to ditch the convoluted continuity of the later films in the franchise and instead bring back Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith with a simplified, back to basics approach was a smart one.

The first "Saw" movie famously launched the careers of modern horror maestros James Wan and Leigh Whannell, but they quickly moved on to different pastures. In their place, the larger "Saw" franchise -- the horror series that defined the aughts, dominated the Halloween box office for years, and inspired a bajillion pearl-clutching think pieces -- was shepherded forward by producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg, who have masterminded every single film in the series. If you want to tap into the "Saw" braintrust, to really understand how these movies are made and what drives them, these are the guys you speak with.

Hello, Den of Geek readers. We would like to play a little game.
When James Wan and Leigh Whannell unleashed the first Saw in 2004, you might’ve thought the franchise was all about grisly murders and psychological nonsense. But if you still hold true to that opinion, then you have not been paying attention to the backstory and police procedural that accompanied the carnage. With each entry, the Saw franchise embraced flashbacks, flash-forwards, and flash-sideways, becoming more convoluted than that other 2000s phenomenon, Lost.
And now that Saw X is in theaters, you realize that you don’t understand the story at all. How can there be a 10th movie when John Kramer died in Saw III? Didn’t Jigsaw reboot the series in 2017? Did anyone actually see Spiral: From the Book of Saw?
Den of Geek readers, your attention to the bloody fun parts of Saw has left you unprepared.

When you think of Sundance movies, you usually think of quirky, optimistic or melodramatic coming-of-age stories. Films like “Manchester by the Sea,” “Coda” or “The Big Sick.” But the movie that spawned the most successful franchise from its Sundance debut is none of those things. In January 2004, Sundance audiences were knocked on their collective butts by “Saw,” an out-of-nowhere horror flick from two unknown Australian filmmakers.
Director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s “Saw” offered a deceptively simple premise of two desperate men chained together in an empty room with little idea of how they got there or how to get out.
Starring Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, Monica Potter and a pre-“Lost” Michael Emerson, “Saw” inspired a new wave of grindhouse horror, films that reveled in old-school gore and a certain Rube Goldberg mentality to the kills beyond just attractive teenagers being picked off one by one.

The past two weekends have been rough for theaters, as the riches of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have worn off and overall grosses have fallen to levels not seen since mid-February. Fortunately, a trio of new genre films are here to bring some business back.
The threesome in question are Lionsgate’s “Saw X,” a back-to-basics approach to the gory horror franchise that defined the genre in the 2000s; Paramount’s preschooler family film “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” the latest offering from the Nick Jr. series that has become a merchandising titan; and Disney/20th Century’s “The Creator,” an original sci-fi film from “Rogue One” director Gareth Edwards.

Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review). But they’re not the only franchise mainstays that worked to bring the gory sequel to life.
Director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D), the franchise’s long-term editor since 2004’s Saw, helms the tenth installment from the screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.
Greutert, Bell, and Smith aren’t the only returning franchise vets either; producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules launched the franchise in 2004 alongside James Wan and Leigh Whannell and have been with the franchise the entire way.
With nearly twenty years of franchise lore, history, and experience with Jigsaw and his gnarly traps under their belts, few know Saw quite like Burg and Koules.

Directed and edited by Saw veteran Kevin Greutert, this is the tenth film in the popular death-traps-and-gore series, taking place between the events of the first movie and the first sequel. Happily for fans of the long-running franchise, that setting allows the filmmakers to bring back the series’ strongest asset, actor Tobin Bell, and the result is one of the most enjoyable Saw sequels for quite some time.
Bell reprises his role as serial killer and all-around deathtrap genius John Kramer, who travels to Mexico to undergo a controversial treatment that may be able to cure his terminal cancer. However, when he discovers that he has been the victim of a fraudulent scheme, he teams up with his apprentice Amanda (Saw veteran Shawnee Smith...
