Bill Traylor was born into slavery on a Benton, Alabama cotton plantation in 1853, but he died 96 years later as an artist then forgotten by history not far away in Montgomery in 1949. , and “Bill Traylor: Chasing Ghosts” effectively manages to do so in a punchy 70 minutes filled with a mix of clever, theatrical flourishes that don’t eclipse the artist himself. The film offers an insightful window into the jagged wonder of the bracingly modernist drawings he etched onto scraps of cardboard in his late 80s, when he was at the end of his life, looking back on days on the plantation, and on a lifetime spanning the eras of slavery, Reconstruction, and Jim Crow segregation.
Why was Traylor mostly omitted from history for so long? The framework of American Black art in the mid-20th century, this documentary argues, didn’t exist in any robust way. But “Chasing Ghosts” isn...

Exclusive: Hellboy actor Ron Perlman and Suffragette director Sarah Gavron among jury to select winning features.
Female filmmakers have swept the awards at the 15th East End Film Festival (June 23 - July 3) for the first time.
The films, which also each focus on a female protagonist, include As I Open My Eyes, Sonita, Adult Life Skills and The Third Dad.
“It’s fantastic to see so many women represented,” said Eeff director Alison Poltock. “With women making up less than 14% of filmmakers in the UK, it shows that whilst the quantity may be low, clearly the quality is extremely high.”
Leyla Bouzid’s As I Open My Eyes won the festival’s best feature prize. The film, which centres on an 18-year-old girl who fights family pressure in Tunisia, was chosen by a jury comprising Eeff director in residence Tolga Karaçelik (Ivy), film writer and producer Kaleem Aftab, Bangladeshi filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Us actor Ron Perlman...

The Most Crucial Art Documents of the Season
Setting from your Zombie Formalism section. It was an eventful year for craft publishing, with a lot of adjustments while in the scenery, as new guides exposed (including this one), or jumped up. or reinvented themselves. But beneath all-the institutional shuffles, what were the suggestions that got people excited? the remaining selection under is clearly an individual one, although I polled peers to attempt to answer that issue. The planet is reflected by it around me, and is weighted towards bits that reflect my own personal spot and my own personal feeling of this year;s troubled features. Regardless, listed below are a number of writing that I think are touchstones of 2014 of the items: Holland Cotter – Sophisticated, New York Times. Jan 17, 2014 It;s a little insane if you ask me that s fretful, condition that is sweeping -of-the-scene part is per year old.

The Most Important Art Essays of the Entire Year
Setting from the Zombie Formalism screen. It had been an eventful year for craft writing, with a lot of changes while in the panorama, as new publications popped (including this 1), or sprang up. or reinvented themselves. But beneath all of the institutional shuffles, what were? I polled colleagues to try to answer that concern, nevertheless the final choice below is obviously a personal one. The entire world is reflected by it around me, and it is measured towards pieces that replicate my own area and my own personal feeling of the year’s troubled attributes. Regardless, listed here are some of publishing that I believe are touchstones of 2014 of the items: Holland Cotter, Lost in the Gallery – Sophisticated, & quot York Times. The Whitney Museum of American Art opened its doors to the general public — that is, everybody who is everybody, not just everybody who is anybody — this morning, so if you somehow never managed to snag an invite to one of the three dozen or so “members only” tours of the new building, well, it’s all yours now. But the reality is, the place has been up and running for nearly two weeks, so here’s a way to fake your way through a Whitney-centric conversation this weekend. Now that Roberta Smith’s review appeared in today’s Times, every major critic has committed his or her opinions, so it's time to fake having your own, even if you’re too lazy to walk down to Gansevoort Street.First up, here’s our own Jerry Saltz on the museum. You really do need to read all of his several thousand...

In case you missed yesterday’s chat on Facebook, below is a recap of the highlights. Our senior art critic shared everything from his favorite (of this very moment) emerging artists to why he brings doughnuts to the office to the disagreements he and Roberta have had over art. We wish Jerry could answer your questions all day, and he wishes so, too, he says — if only someone would pay him. Until then, you’ll just have to find him here on Seen (and in the magazine). On his trip to Kmart this past Black Friday:Regarding the Nicki Minaj leopard-print jeans: I bought two jackets at Kmart that day — Black Friday — total purchase = $49. But Roberta put her foot down at the Nicki Minaj pants with chains printed on them. On disagreements he and his wife, art critic for the Times Roberta Smith, have had in the past:As anyone who is...

Domenique Lévy and Emmanuel Perrotin have collaborated on presenting a survey of figurative sculptures by Germaine Richier, who Lévy, -- in perhaps, overly bold rhetoric -- claims to have been “the mother of post war sculpture in Europe.” It has been fifty seven years since her first one person show in New York at the Martha Jackson Gallery. Hardly a forgotten figure in France and Europe, during her lifetime she was in five consecutive Venice Biennales, and in recent decades her work has been seen in major surveys of the period: Paris-Paris (1981) at the Centre Pompidou, Aftermath (1982) at the Barbican Art Gallery, Paris Post War (1993) at the Tate Gallery and a retrospective at the Foundation Maeght, Saint-Paul (1996), followed by another at the Academie der Kunst in Berlin (1997). In America, she fell from sight after her untimely death in 1959. The exhibition is on three floors of the two galleries 73th street townhouse.

Art critic Roberta Smith (my wife) wrote a damning review of James Franco's 65 silly self-obsessed demi-drag recreations of Cindy Sherman's 1977-80 "Film Stills," now being shown at Pace as “New Film Stills.” The review's last line sums up the situation: "Someone or something, make him stop." Amen.I love Franco's acting. He's incredible in Spring Breakers. (That scene of him jumping up and down on the bed yelling about how much shit he has is fantastic!) He holds the screen in every second of 127 Hours. But in his repeated efforts to be an artist, Franco is only making bad art. Or things that look like art but are still bad. Either way, the crux of the issue was touched on by the sneaky-brilliant Cindy Sherman herself. When asked by Gallerist what she made of Franco's act she simply said, “I can only be flattered. I don’t know...
