It’s been a stellar year of cinema and pop culture-themed books, and the texts (and Blu-rays) in this round-up all make fine gifts. One additional book that should be on your year-end list is Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier. It’s a satisfying companion to season three of Peaks, not to mention Frost’s own Secret History of Twin Peaks. So be sure to check out Nick Newman’s recent interview with the Peaks co-creator.
Live Cinema and Its Techniques by Francis Ford Coppola (Liveright)
The legendary Francis Ford Coppola has spoken of “live cinema” with regularity over the years, specifically with respect to 1981’s One From the Heart. That film, a box office flop now held in some regard, is an essential part of Live Cinema and Its Techniques, a fascinating new book authored by Coppola himself. The lessons from that experience, Coppola says,...

There's an X-Files children's book coming to help ease young kids into the wonderfully dark and mysterious world of The X-Files. The book is called The X-Files: Earth Children Are Weird and it was written by Kim Smith.
The story features kid versions of Agent Mulder and Agent Sculley going on a camping adventure. According to EW, it "sees the best pals go camping in a backyard during an overnight sleepover — complete with a fancy tent. Only, the night doesn’t go as planned as young Mulder and Scully encounter all sorts of strange lights and sounds. And as the exclusive excerpts below show, both characters react in classic fashion: Mulder attributes the strangeness to aliens, and Scully searches for a rational explanation… if there is one."
If you're a parent, aunt, or uncle who ar looking to be a geeky influence on the kids in the family to help raise them right,...

Kim Smith has been dancing since she was 2 years old and teaching dance for decades. So it broke her heart when her youngest daughter Ragan never quite fit in in the classes she tried.
“I was trying to find a program for Ragan, but she is autistic and has a short attention span,” Smith tells People.
So Smith, 50, created a class for Ragan, 7, and other kids with special needs like her in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“To be able to watch them learn choreography and watch their faces light up when they get a step right, it’s the most rewarding feeling as a teacher,...

Kim Smith doesn't hold back in the video for his new single, "Jealous."
The stylish clip, which was directed by photographer Mauricio A. Rodriguez, sees the openly gay Smith -- who is billed as a "neo-Weimar, cabaret-pop" performer from Australia -- strike a number of steamy poses in a variety of outré, barely-there outfits.
"Jealous" is the latest cut from Smith's 2013 album "Nova," which was released in May to solid reviews. The award-winning Smith is a regular performer in New York, where he's taken the stage at Café Sabarsky at the Neue Galerie, Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre and Le Poisson Rouge, among other venues.

Song stylist and performance artist Kim Smith is a truly unique performer who brings together the worlds of cabaret and theatre in a wholly idiosyncratic and arrestingly amusing manner. Part Marlene Dietrich, part Eartha Kitt and all Kim Smith, Kim and I recently had the chance to discuss his solo show, Misfit - what inspired it what he will be singing what we can expect from the show - as well as a host of other topics, such as his Australian upbringing, the music and performers who inspire him most, performing in Sondheims Merrily We Roll Along and other musicals, as well as other collaborations with director Christian Coulson. Plus, Smith and I take an overview of his favorite current pop artists - many of whom he pays tribute to in his shows, such as Bjork and Robyn - and what elements draw him most in creating his series of surreal solo shows,...
