60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon died Wednesday evening in a car accident in New York.
The CBS newsman was riding in a livery cab that struck another car and then crashed into a median on the West Side Highway, his network confirmed.
Simon, the recipient of multiple Emmy awards — including a Lifetime Achievement Emmy — joined the Eye Network’s news division in 1967. He began regularly contributing to the Sunday-night newsmagazine in 1996.
An accomplished foreign journalist, Simon’s overseas assignments often involved real danger. At the beginning of the Gulf War in 1991, he and his team were captured and held for 40 days by Iraqi forces.

Angelina Jolie has said she wanted to be a funeral director. The Salt star recalled her disappointment with her grandfather's funeral in a recent interview, adding that the incident almost inspired her to become an undertaker. "It sounds like this very strange, eccentric, dark thing to do, but in fact I lost my grandfather and was very upset with his funeral," Jolie told Bob Simon on 60 Minutes. "How somebody passes and how family deals with this passing and what death is should be addressed in a different way," she continued. "If this whole acting thing didn't work out, that was going to be my path." The mother (more)...

Angelina Jolie is sorry for your loss. The 36-year old actress appeared on 60 Minutes over the weekend and admitted that she was considering a career as a funeral director. That is, if her acting career didn’t take off. Not exactly every little girl’s dream. No one could ever accuse of Angie of being a little Miss Sunshine, but this is darker than we expected!
“It sounds like this very strange, eccentric, dark thing to do, but in fact I lost my grandfather and was very upset with his funeral,” she told interviewer Bob Simon. “How somebody passes and how family deals with this passing and what death is should be addressed in a different way. If this whole acting thing didn’t work out that was going to be my path.”

Angelina Jolie is promoting her directorial debut, "In The Land of Blood and Honey" (December 23), which means conversation inevitably veers toward Jolie's tabloid existence rather than the work at hand. 60 Minutes' Bob Simon kept his conversation polite but still asked the usual questions necesary for people to pay attention. He met with Jolie several times to put together a profile on Jolie; you can watch the video below. As for her directorial debut, she is "nervous that people are going to not understand it." That's probably because she thinks people don't understand her. Yes, she's beautiful, has a dark side, and has a bunch of kids with Brad...

The most revealing thing about Angelina Jolie’s candid chat with 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon wasn’t her declaration that “I’m still a bad girl” and that that side of her “belongs to Brad ,” or that she chose to be in the action flick Salt because she “felt like … getting up and punching something” after giving birth to twins and wearing “a nightgown for about seven months.” Rather, it was her alternative career plans had this whole acting thing not panned out: funeral director.

New York -- In an upset at Monday night's 31st annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, CBS News with seven honors and NBC News with six wins plus a CNBC award edged out usual frontrunner PBS, which earned five awards.
Fox News doesn't submit entries, and with the exception of the one CNBC award, the other cable news networks were shut out.
David Letterman extortionist Joe Halderman, who was nominated for his work as producer on an episode of CBS' "48 Hours Mystery," did not win. It wasn't clear whether Halderman was in attendance during the event, held at Jazz at Lincoln Center, but he wasn't expected to be in the house.
Among the surprising winners: Sundance Channel and Planet Green won two awards, and VH1 won one.
